    Lost city of Atlantis discovered?

Grainy images show city-like formations at the bottom of the Caribbean

A group of 'undersea archaeologists' have become the latest to claim they have uncovered the lost city of Atlantis.

The scientists - who have refused to identify themselves - have released a series of images taken beneath the Caribbean.

They insist the snaps show what appear to be the ruins of a city that could pre-date Egypt's pyramids, which appeared after 2600BC.

The pattern on the sea-bed could be the ruins of a city that pre-dates the Egyptian pyramids, the group said

Could it be? The grainy images, released to a French newspaper by an anonymous group, appear to show grid-like structures that resemble the streets of a city

They even told a French newspaper that one of the structures appears to be a pyramid.

Now the anonymous group wants to raise funds to explore the secret location where the images were taken.

They would not reveal the exact location, however, saying only that it was somewhere in the Caribbean Sea.

The claims have raised eyebrows on the internet, though sceptics refrained from debunking them entirely - just in case.

Mysterious: The group said the images were taken beneath the Caribbean Sea - but they would not give an exact location, saying they are hoping to raise funds to explore further

The images are taken from beneath the Caribbean Sea, the researchers claim - though they would not reveal the exact location

The legend of Atlantis, a city of astonishing wealth, knowledge and power that sank beneath the ocean waves, has fascinated millions.
Time and time again hopes have been raised that the lost city has been found - only for those hopes to be dashed against the evidence (or lack thereof).

Its location - or at least the source of the legend - remained a tantalising mystery.

In 1997, Russian scientists claimed to have found Atlantis 100 miles off Land's End.

In 2000 a ruined town was found under 300ft of water off the north coast of Turkey in the Black Sea.

The area is thought to have been swamped by a great flood around 5000BC, possibly the floods referred to in the Old Testament.

In 2004 an American architect used sonar to reveal man-made walls a mile deep in the Mediterranean between Cyprus and Syria.

In 2007 Swedish researchers claimed the city lay on the Dogger Bank in the North Sea, which was submerged in the Bronze Age.

And as recently as February of this year, what appeared to be grid-like lines that resembled city streets were spotted on Google Earth - in the ocean off the coast of Africa.
Sadly Google itself quickly debunked the suggestion, explaining that the lines were left by a boat as it collected data for the application.
'Bathymetric (sea-floor) data is often collected from boats using sonar to take measurements of the sea-floor,' a spokesman said.

'The lines reflect the path of the boat as it gathers the data.'

Atlantis in the Caribbean? It’s not the first time

December 17, 5:17 AMKansas City Strange & Mysterious Facts ExaminerChris Cunnyngham

The newspaper Herald de Paris is reporting that "unnamed" archaeologists are claiming to have found the remains of an underwater civilization in the Caribbean. The archaeologists are perhaps wisely avoiding use of the "A word" and stating only that they believe the site to be "one of many cities of an advanced, seafaring, trade-based civilization, which may have been visited by their Eurocentric counterparts.”

This is not the first time that possible traces of an ancient civilization have turned up in the Caribbean.

In 1968, pilot J. Manson Valentine discovered what appeared to be a road or wall-like structure off the coast of North Bimini Island, a structure known today as the Bimini Road. Arguments are on-going as to whether Bimini Road is man-made or a natural phenomenon.

Curiously, Edgar Cayce, the "Sleeping Prophet" placed the location of "Poseidia," a city of Atlantis, off the shores of Bimini.

In 2001, Reuters news agency reported that a team from Advanced Digital Communications had detected a 'sunken city' off the coast of Cuba. They reported sonar readings that resembled roads, the remains of buildings, and even a pyramid. After some excitement in the press the story faded and no more revelations were forthcoming.

Author Andrew Collins's Book, Gateway to Atlantis, proposed ancient Cuba as the center of a vast pre-Columbian civilization similar to Atlantis. Slightly further afield, Ivor Zapp and George Erikson, in their book Atlantis in America, put forth Costa Rica as the center of an ancient maritime empire that possessed advanced navigation techniques. Adventurer F. A. Mitchell-Hedges proposed that the Bay Islands of Honduras were the last remnants of the shattered civilization.

Theories proposing a new world location for Atlantis are not new. Shortly after the "discovery" of the new world many scholars offered that America itself was Atlantis. In 1669 a map was even published showing America divided among the descendants of Neptune, king of Atlantis.

And they could all be right.

The Younger Dryas impact event is a hypothosized "earth impact event" that may have happened roughly 12,000 years ago. Some scientists think it could be the cause of megafauna extinction in North America. If true, this event could have set the entire continent on fire. And if this impact was spread out, with multiple strikes from a shattered meteor, asteroid, or comet, the ocean as well as the land would have been impacted. Any coastal civilization - Atlantean or otherwise - would have been destroyed.
Plato's date for the destruction of Atlantis? About 12,000 years ago.

As to the recent alleged Caribbean discoveries we'll keep an open mind but "unnamed archaeologists" and photos with no provenance do not inspire confidence.

Atlantis has proven to be very elusive.

You can see the pictures from the Herald de Paris story here and here. And be sure to watch the absolutely mind blowing trailer below. Looks like the greatest movie ever made.

    Was Atlantis Discovered?

On Wednesday, archaeologists have claimed that they found the mythical and famed lost city of Atlantis. The legend of Atlantis is referenced in many different legends throughout the world, including India and the Mayans. It was "officially" first mentioned in some ancient texts referenced by the philosopher Plato. However, many seekers have not found the lost city.
    Huffington Post says:
Undersea archaeologists have found the ruins of an ancient city on the bottom of the Caribbean Sea, and researchers claim that it is the fabled and lost city of Atlantis. The satellite photos do show something that could be a city, and the researchers believe that what they've found would predate the pyramids of Egypt. Indeed they claim to be able to make out a pyramid and other city-like structures from the satellite photos.
FTO says: "The exact location is not known yet but soon we might find out exactly where and what is happening."

So, is this just another nebulous instance of someone ''finding'' the lost city?

Google Earth also "found" Atlantis a few months ago, with strange protrusions coming out of the watery firmament, according to CNET:
From what it sounds like, a British aeronautical engineer was playing around with the new Google Earth 5.0, which includes undersea data, and noticed something funny off the coast of Africa, about 600 miles west of the Canary Islands, that resembled a pattern of a street grid.According to the United Kingdom's Press Association, the pattern of streets equated to an area the size of Wales.

Lost city of Atlantis, swamped by tsunami, may be found

By Zach Howard Zach Howard Sat Mar 12, 11:36 am ET

NORTHAMPTON, Mass (Reuters) – A U.S.-led research team may have finally located the lost city of Atlantis, the legendary metropolis believed swamped by a tsunami thousands of years ago in mud flats in southern Spain.

"This is the power of tsunamis," head researcher Richard Freund told Reuters.

"It is just so hard to understand that it can wipe out 60 miles inland, and that's pretty much what we're talking about," said Freund, a University of Hartford, Connecticut, professor who lead an international team searching for the true site of Atlantis.

To solve the age-old mystery, the team used a satellite photo of a suspected submerged city to find the site just north of Cadiz, Spain. There, buried in the vast marshlands of the Dona Ana Park, they believe that they pinpointed the ancient, multi-ringed dominion known as Atlantis.

The team of archeologists and geologists in 2009 and 2010 used a combination of deep-ground radar, digital mapping, and underwater technology to survey the site.

Freund's discovery in central Spain of a strange series of "memorial cities," built in Atlantis' image by its refugees after the city's likely destruction by a tsunami, gave researchers added proof and confidence, he said.

Atlantis residents who did not perish in the tsunami fled inland and built new cities there, he added.

The team's findings will be unveiled on Sunday in "Finding Atlantis," a new National Geographic Channel special.

While it is hard to know with certainty that the site in Spain in Atlantis, Freund said the "twist" of finding the memorial cities makes him confident Atlantis was buried in the mud flats on Spain's southern coast.

"We found something that no one else has ever seen before, which gives it a layer of credibility, especially for archeology, that makes a lot more sense," Freund said.

Greek philosopher Plato wrote about Atlantis some 2,600 years ago, describing it as "an island situated in front of the straits which are by you called the Pillars of Hercules," as the Straits of Gibraltar were known in antiquity. Using Plato's detailed account of Atlantis as a map, searches have focused on the Mediterranean and Atlantic as the best possible sites for the city.

Tsunamis in the region have been documented for centuries, Freund says.

One of the largest was a reported 10-story tidal wave that slammed Lisbon in November, 1755.

Debate about whether Atlantis truly existed has lasted for thousands of years. Plato's "dialogues" from around 360 B.C. are the only known historical sources of information about the iconic city. Plato said the island he called Atlantis "in a single day and night... disappeared into the depths of the sea."

Experts plan further excavations are planned at the site where they believe Atlantis is located and at the mysterious "cities" in central Spain 150 miles away to more closely study geological formations and to date artifacts.

Well...too much show, and too little facts.

They repeated things - sometimes 3 times.

Regardless - they said they found some structures under the mud plain, and it would be difficult and expensive to evacuate due to the depth, water, etc.

Stand by for more news, I guess.

I watched it. It was interesting, but as Backstop said, they did repeat themselves a lot, seeming to fill out an hour slot.

Seems they may be onto something though. In any event, it was not a waste of time to watch.

They suggested based on sat and aerial photos as well as electronic ground soundings, that it lay buried under the flats along the Spain coast north of the Rock of Gibraltar passage. If you look at Google maps, I believe it is near the area of Paloma Baja or somewhere thereabouts, from what they suggested. They said it was in a national park zone with a name like Dolce something. Out to sea they sounded out a structure that 'could' be a man made wall using natural material, they suggest.

Hope I didn't come across as saying the show was a waste of time; it wasn't.

Kind of interesting where they found that small "mock up" of what they think may have been Atlantis - figuring the survivors built it as a monument.

I do hope they find the funding and methods to dig there.

Well, Rick, there is some theory that the Minoan culture developed from contact with the Atlantians, or were survivors. The show did bring up that volcano and such.

Kind of interesting that something we grew up with as myth and legend may actually have one if not two feet in truth. Makes you wonder what other so called myths we have need a serious scientific second look.
