this is not a personal attack against anyone who uses the word "progressive" to secretly mean "liberal agenda". if it weren't for progressives, we wouldn't have computers. we wouldn't have electricity. we wouldn't have the USA. the world would be flat. i understand that in order to effectively communicate with others, you have to also adopt their lingo. but i really do hate that people just toss the word progressive around as if it means "liberal" or "democrat". i consider myself a progressive. but i also have conservative ideals and protect other's conservative ideals.

but to purely on topic, i'm personally tired of the race card. i don't see mexican's flooding into south america. and they HAVE socialized health care.

I'm sorry Zen, but you're wrong... not about what you said, but about being "upset about tossing" the word around.

I don't really have the time this minute, but, "Progressive" is NOT a term that we conservatives "toss around". The word was misappropriated by the Leftist Liberal-Socialists to misdirect everyone about their actual agenda.

But, that's a FACT... not that the Conservatives did it.

No, indeed, Conservatives do NOT do that normally and it takes a LOT of pushing for us to push back. A prime example of this bullshit about "Pro Life" and "Pro Choice".

The first use of the words came out on the side of the PRO-ABORTIONISTS (which is another word for "Pro Choice"). They don't want CHOICE, they want to APPEAR they want choice.

They call us "Pro GUN" people, when in fact, we're truly "Pro Second Amendment". I'm NOT for everyone having guns. I don't want bad guys to have them, I don't want people to own guns that either shouldn't own them (unstable personalities) or people who are AFRAID of guns.

I DO want me, you and the rest of us law-abiding, normal, every day citizens to own them IF WE WISH. I also WANT criminals to have guns... AFTER they have been convicted and SERVED THEIR TIME.

Unless they are murderers, or violent criminals who've used guns in crimes - then someone who has served his or her time and is out of the system should have their rights restored ONE HUNDRED percent.

I don't think that attacking "those who throw the words around" in this case is accurate or legitimate. Later, I will see if I can locate some evidence for you.

Ok, just a couple minutes here...

    http://www.progressive.org/
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Progressivism
In the United States, the term progressivism emerged in the late 19th century into the 20th century in reference to a more general response to the vast changes brought by industrialization: an alternative to both the traditional conservative response to social and economic issues and to the various more radical streams of socialism and anarchism which opposed them. Political parties, such as the Progressive Party, organized at the start of the 20th century, and progressivism made great strides under American presidents Theodore Roosevelt, Woodrow Wilson, Franklin Delano Roosevelt and Lyndon Baines Johnson.[1]
The men mentioned last are indeed what we would today term "Liberals" in their actions and idealism.

    http://agonist.org/20090325/so_what_is_a_progressive
About as many left-of-center political groups in the nation's capital call themselves liberals these days as say they're Whigs. Instead, they call themselves "progressives."

    http://www.wiretapmag.org/stories/23706
    It's not liberalism

The first key to understanding progressivism is that it's not the same as liberalism, as many might assume. "Progressivism is an orientation towards politics," Halpin said in an interview with Campus Progress. "It's not a long-standing ideology like liberalism, but an historically-grounded concept ... that accepts the world as dynamic." Progressivism is not an ideology at all, but an attitude towards the world of politics that is far less black-and-white than conservatism or liberalism, breaking free from the false and divisive dichotomy of liberal vs. conservative that has dominated American politics for too long.
I disagree, in part, with the above statement... that it isn't liberalism. It's liberalism with an eye toward politics instead of simply being "social" policy. It is MORE left of Liberalism though, at least today. Those who typically call themselves progressives are in Congress and I'll leave it to you to determine their politics.

According to their "Official Position" they are against war in Iraq and Iran (they want a diplomatic solution), for making illegal immigrants legal (Protecting ALL workers in the US), the want to basically ruin intelligence collection, "level the playing field" in education (make it so no one is left behind, wow...), they hate Bush and want to remove his permanent tax cuts, increase taxes, bring troops home and stop paying the military and much, much more.

    Rick,

Thanks for the input. However, I'm still unclear as to what I said that you are pointing out as "wrong".

it's likely i lost vocabulary as the years passed by, or maybe i'm just not very politically savvy. however, i was always under the idea that "root" definition of progressive meant "improve upon". computer technology is progressive. The programming language C++ made it's progression from C. Society has "progressed" as a whole. I've progressed through life. I'm 110% for "progress" and "progressiveness". How can I say this without the political connotation? I understand that I have to consider my audience if I want to communicate successfully. But that's just it. The word "progressive" has been hijacked (as Rick clearly demonstrated) to mean something else. Just like right now, the left wingers are desperately trying to make "conservative" sound racist. I'm with Rick on how people who are die hard 2nd amendment defenders are seen as "gun lovers". It's "the twist on definitions" that I get upset about. "To me", that is the brainwashing that we've all been living through for centuries. Hopefully, we as a species will progress beyond this type of foolishness. (i hope i used my vocabulary to accurately express what it is i'm thinking lol)

This has happened before, does anyone remember what the Left did in 2006?

La Raza helped organized Illegal Alien Unrest followed by the division in the GOP Bush Attacks Immigration Deal Opponents. Then in that election cycle the Democrats swept in and here we are.

This is not to be critical of the Catholics, but to be aware how the Left could utilize this effort to support their agenda.

US bishops mobilize Catholics to fight for immigration bill

    Jan. 6, 2010 | Kitty Felde | KPCC

    Download

Congress expects to tackle immigration sometime this year. Roman Catholic bishops have already started organizing local Catholics to lobby their members of Congress on an immigration reform bill.

U.S. Catholic bishops have long supported immigration reform that includes a pathway to citizenship for people who illegally live in this country. The bishops also want to promote faster family reunification.

To convey that message to Congress, the bishops have organized a postcard campaign. They’ll urge parishioners to send a million-and-a-half pieces of mail to Capitol Hill and demand passage of an immigration bill.

Bishop John Wester, who heads the migration committee for the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops, says Barack Obama made immigration reform a priority during his presidential campaign. Bishop Wester says that despite high unemployment, the urgency surrounding immigration hasn’t changed.

"You know, I would ask the question, 'When is the perfect time? When are we ever going to have that window when everything is just perfect?' Well, it’s never going to happen."

The bishops may have a tough time selling legalization to their flocks. A December Zogby Poll indicates that two-thirds of Catholics polled support encouraging illegal immigrants to go home. Only one in four supports legalizing their status

The creeping leftism and liberation theology is what really turned me off of attending Catholic church. Fortunately, I have since found a smaller and more personal Catholic church that wasn't following that path and have been able to start attending again.

This push for amnesty by these churches are solely an effort to ensure a larger stream of donations and frankly, it makes me sick that so many in the church would sell out for their pieces of silver.

Pelosi Urges Catholic Church to Play 'Major Role' in Immigration Overhaul

    FOXNews.com

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi on Thursday urged Catholic leaders to "instruct" their parishioners to support immigration reforms, saying clerics should "play a very major role" in supporting Democratic policies.

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi of Calif. gestures during a news conference on Capitol Hill in Washington, Thursday, March 4, 2010. (AP)

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi on Thursday urged Catholic leaders to "instruct" their parishioners to support immigration reforms, saying clerics should "play a very major role" in supporting Democratic policies.

"The cardinals, the archbishops, the bishops that come to me and say, 'We want you to pass immigration reform,' and I said, 'I want you to speak about it from the pulpit. I want you to instruct your' -- whatever the communication is," said Pelosi, who is Catholic, speaking at the Nation's Catholic Community conference sponsored by Trinity Washington University and the National Catholic Reporter.

"The people, some (who) oppose immigration reform, are sitting in those pews, and you have to tell them that this is a manifestation of our living the gospels," she said.

While it's not unusual for clergy to speak about politics from the pulpit, it is uncommon for a lawmaker to openly encourage them to preach a specific policy.

Asked for clarification, a Pelosi spokesman issued the statement: "From health care to energy security to immigration reform, the speaker believes the faith community has played and will continue to play a critical role in our national debate."

Pelosi said the church "has an important role to play" in teaching about dignity and respect, and "as a practical matter" it's not possible to tell 12 million illegal immigrants to "go back to wherever you came from or go to jail."

After Arizona passed a controversial immigration law, with Gov. Jan Brewer saying she was forced to act because Congress hasn't, Washington has been at a loss on how to proceed on new federal policies that could put millions of illegal immigrants on a path to citizenship. Lawmakers on both sides admit that passing a bill during this election year is highly unlikely.

The Arizona law, which is slated to take effect July 29, makes it a state crime to be in the U.S. illegally. It directs police to question people about their immigration status when they may be in the country illegally and when they already are the subject of police contact.

In other remarks at the Catholic briefing, Pelosi said she prays for her colleagues all the time, Democrats and Republicans alike.

"It's a beautiful thing to listen to different points of view. From a religious perspective we come from a similar Catholic background but sometimes we have to come to a different conclusion about how we translate that into public policy," she said.

Nun Caught Lying Forced To Cancel Pro-Abort Speaker At Catholic ELEMENTARY School

Dolores Huerta: Traded her Catholic faith for the gospel of radical activism

    Dolores Huerta
is a big name in the oh-so-chic world of leftist politics--the world that the college professors miseducating your children live in.

Dolores became popular as a co-conspirator with Cesar Chavez and his United Farmworkers union in the 60's and 70's. Although she claims to be Catholic, she is an outspoken advocate of abortion rights and special homosexual rights. She has even lobbied against the efforts of her own bishops by
campaigning AGAINST initiatives in California to notify the parents of minor girls who are seeking abortions.

The University of St. Thomas in Houston lived up to its designation as a "Catholic" university last month by
    revoking her invitation to speak
    there.
Our Lady of Guadalupe' parish school in Bakersfield California, however was not quite so savvy. Huerta was scheduled to address a special assembly of students at OLG on March 6, which angered some parents, especially those who thought they were paying for a Catholic education. Sister Eva Lujano, the principal, insisted that she had no idea about Huerta's anti-Catholic background when she was presented with the facts about Huerta. This was clearly a lie, because parents had already written her about Huerta being praised as a "hero" in the classroom and she ignored the letters. The nun also refused to say whether she would cancel Huerta's appearance based on her anti-Catholic background. Fortunately, Fresno's superintendent of diocesan schools stepped in and stopped it.

    Get the whole story
    here.

    MY POINT?

Parents paying for a Catholic education can no longer assume that their children are getting one in a Catholic school.

This story demonstrates just one typical case of the arrogant attitude many Catholic school administrators have toward the parents who pay their wages.

Catholic schools are a wonderful thing. But if you're a parent with children in a Catholic school,
it's up to you to make sure they are keeping the curriculum Catholic.

A progressive is a communist. Period. End of statement. There is no in-between. If someone calls themselves a Progressive, then they might as well admit they are Commies.

This isn't "brainwashing". Trying to make themselves appear to be something OTHER THAN COMMIES is the brainwashing.

The Dems are desperate to pass some form of amnesty through before Nov. when they stand to lose control of the house. If amnesty goes through you'll see an end to the GOP as we know it, and conservatives will never hold majority again. This of course being exactly their plan from day one. The biggest mistake they made was to push through healthcare before the amnesty. I think they completely underestimated how angry people would get. Even with all their media kool-aid drinkers on their side, they couldn't get the people to believe them anymore.

Evangelical Christians call for immigration reform

Evangelical leaders calling for comprehensive immigration reform say their pastors see firsthand the difficulties faced by immigrants who fear arrest and deportation.

The Rev. Leith Anderson, President of the National Association of Evangelicals, was joined by the Rev. Richard Land of the Southern Baptist Convention and other Christian leaders in a telephone news conference Wednesday. They said reform should secure the U.S. border while offering illegal immigrants an earned path to citizenship that could involve paying a fine.

The Rev. Marcos Witt, who ministers to Hispanics at Houston's Lakewood Church — the nation's largest — called for an end to immigration raids that divide families.

Land said most illegal immigrants enter the U.S. to work, unlike American criminals who break the law so they won't have to work.

Pelosi Says She Has a Duty to Pursue Policies in Keeping With The Values of Jesus, 'The Word Made Flesh'

    (CNSNews.com)
-- House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) says she believes she must pursue public policies "in keeping with the values" of Jesus Christ, "The Word made Flesh."

Pelosi, who is a Catholic and who favors legalized abortion, voted against the ban on partial-birth abortion that was enacted into law in 2003.

At a May 6 Catholic Community Conference on Capitol Hill, the speaker said: “They ask me all the time, ‘What is your favorite this? What is your favorite that? What is your favorite that?’ And one time, ‘What is your favorite word?’ And I said, ‘My favorite word? That is really easy. My favorite word is the Word, is the Word. And that is everything. It says it all for us. And you know the biblical reference, you know the Gospel reference of the Word.”

“And that Word," Pelosi said, "is, we have to give voice to what that means in terms of public policy that would be in keeping with the values of the Word. The Word. Isn’t it a beautiful word when you think of it? It just covers everything. The Word.

“Fill it in with anything you want. But, of course, we know it means: ‘The Word was made flesh and dwelt amongst us.’ And that’s the great mystery of our faith. He will come again. He will come again. So, we have to make sure we’re prepared to answer in this life, or otherwise, as to how we have measured up.”

    John 1:14
states, "And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we saw His glory, the glory as it were of the only begotten of the Father) full of grace and truth."

The passage from the Gospel of John, Christians believe, refers to God (the Word) becoming a man, Jesus Christ, at the moment of the Annunciation, when the angel Gabriel told the Virgin Mary she was going to have a child. According to the
Catholic Encyclopedia, “the Incarnation is the mystery and the dogma of the Word made Flesh.”

    Section 423 of the
Catechism of the Catholic Church states: “We believe and confess that Jesus of Nazareth, born a Jew of a daughter of Israel at Bethlehem at the time of King Herod the Great and the emperor Caesar Augustus, a carpenter by trade, who died crucified in Jerusalem under the procurator Pontius Pilate during the reign of the emperor Tiberius, is the eternal Son of God made man. He 'came from God', 'descended from heaven', and 'came in the flesh'. For 'the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, full of grace and truth; we have beheld his glory, glory as of the only Son from the Father … And from his fullness have we all received, grace upon grace.”

After Pope Benedict XVI met privately with Speaker Pelosi in February 2009, the Vatican issued a statement saying: "His Holiness took the opportunity to speak of the requirements of the natural moral law and the Church's consistent teaching on the dignity of human life from conception to natural death which enjoin all Catholics, and especially legislators, jurists and those responsible for the common good of society, to work in co-operation with all men and women of good will in creating a just system of laws capable of protecting human life at all stages of its development."

Pelosi’s office did not respond to CNSNews.com’s follow-up questions regarding the speaker’s statement that she seeks to make policy in conformance with the values of the Word made flesh.

The Mexican government is opening a satellite consular office on Catalina Island -- a small resort off the California coast with a history of drug smuggling and human trafficking -- to provide the island's illegal Mexican immigrants with identification cards, The Washington Examiner has learned.

The Mexican consular office in Los Angeles issued a flier, a copy of which was obtained by The Examiner, listing the Catalina Island Country Club as the location of its satellite office. It invites Mexicans to visit the office to obtain the identification, called matricular cards, by appointment.

Rep. Dana Rohrabacher, a Republican whose district includes Catalina Island, said handing out matricular cards will exacerbate an already dangerous situation.

"Handing out matricular cards to Mexicans who are not in this country legally is wrong no matter where it's done," he said. "But on Catalina it will do more damage. It's a small island but there's evidence it's being used as a portal for illegals to access mainland California."

Rohrabacher added, "If there were a large number of Americans illegally in Mexico and the U.S. consulate was making it easier for them to stay, Mexico would never permit it."

Mexican officials with the consular office in Los Angeles could not be reached immediately for comment. The matricular consular identification card, is issued by the Mexican government to Mexican nationals residing outside the country, regardless of immigration status. The purpose is to provide identification for opening bank accounts and obtaining other services. But the cards are usually used to skirt U.S. immigration laws, since Mexicans in the country legally have documents proving that status, Immigration and Customs Enforcement officials said.

In 2004 testimony to the Senate Judiciary Committee, FBI officials called the card an unreliable form of identification. The agency said that Mexico lacks a centralized database for them, which could lead to forgery, duplication, and other forms of abuse.

Officers with the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement said their agency was asked by Mexican officials not to enforce U.S. immigration laws on the island while the cards were being issued.

"It amazes me every time that the Mexican government has the gall to tell us what to do," said an ICE official, who asked not to be named. "More surprisingly is how many times we stand by and let them. This is just an example of one of hundreds of requests we've had to deal with."

In April, Los Angeles County sheriff's deputies seized a boat carrying large quantities of marijuana and detained three Mexican nationals who said they were being smuggled into the United States.

The island has a sizable Mexican migrant population. Most are undocumented low-income workers.
    1:15pm UPDATE:

Mexican government officials have moved their satellite consular office from the Catalina Island Country Club to a Catholic Church – citing protection under the Geneva Convention.
