Default '24' Cancelled After 8 Seasons

    '24' Cancelled After 8 Seasons
The Fox action series "24" will not return for a ninth season.

Series star Kiefer Sutherland said in a statement that the show's cast and crew "always wanted '24' to finish on a high note, so the decision to make the eighth season our last was one we all agreed upon." He also said he was looking forward to creating a film version of "24."

The show won the Emmy for outstanding drama series and Sutherland garnered the outstanding lead drama actor trophy for his role as Bauer in 2006.

"News from the 24 set, the crew has been told that 24 has come to an end. There will b no season 9," series director Jon Cassar wrote on his Twitter feed Friday. "Its been a great run, thanx all 4 watching."

Ratings slipped during the thriller's eighth season and the show's expensive production costs and schedule also led to the cancellation, according to published reports.

The final two-hour episode will air May 24.

two hour movie? Two hours isn't enough time to tell a two hour story!

    Fear not 24 fans...

NBC May Have the Chance to Put '24' on its Schedule
    March 12, 2010

It looks like Jack Bauer's counter-terrorism days may not be over after all.

Earlier this week Variety reported that the Fox network was prepared to end the long-running, Emmy-winning '24' this season (its eighth), but now Entertainment Weekly's The Ausiello Files has reported that the 20th Century Fox production company (which makes '24') and NBC are in talks about the latter picking up the series.

The reason for Fox's disillusionment with '24' is two-fold: rising costs and lowered ratings. That might not deter NBC, which is searching for shows to boost its sagging primetime ratings.

According to The Ausiello Files, a move to NBC would delay 20th's rumored plans to launch a Jack Bauer film franchise, since it would be difficult to make a movie while the cast was filming episodes for TV.

If NBC goes for the deal -- provided of course that Fox does cancel the series -- it would make more sense, however, for NBC to port '24' to its USA outlet, where it would fit in nicely with 'Burn Notice' and 'White Collar.'

    NBC's new motto: "Characters Wanted."
