Is Arnold Schwarzenegger angling for a job in the Obama administration?

In an interview with editors at the Los Angeles Times, the outgoing California governor said he was in "no rush" to find a new job when his term ends next month. But asked specifically whether he'd consider a post working for President Obama, he said yes and began to "riff on his credentials," according to the Times' David Lauter.

Schwarzenegger, who counts legislation combating global warming as one of his signature achievements in office, suggested he might be interested in a post dealing with energy or the environment.

"I'm a big believer in environmental issues," Schwarzenegger said, who added that he wanted a post where he could use his "celebrity power … knowledge and experience" to impact public policy. "I've traveled the world. … I'm very familiar with the world."

It's not a far-fetched idea. Obama has often mentioned Schwarzenegger as someone he's like to have in the Cabinet, citing his work on climate change. For months, there have been rumors in Washington that the former action star might join the administration as a climate change czar or as an adviser on energy and the environment. The White House has repeatedly declined to comment on personnel issues.

Schwarzenegger already has plans to head to Washington when he leaves office: He told the paper he plans to travel with former Secretary of State George Schultz and others to the nation's capital next year to lobby for a new energy policy.

Admittedly, it would be a perfect fit: Who’s more qualified to peddle the most expensive myth in history than a guy who made a fortune in fiction?

Schwarzenegger would no doubt commute to this new hypothetical “get people to cut carbon emissions” job in his private Gulfstream jet, which, oddly enough, is the kind of thing Arnold says gives him credibility on environmental issues:

Schwarzenegger said he has credibility on that issue, and “people are very receptive when I talk about these things because I’m a Hummer driver … not a tree hugger.”

True, he’s not a tree hugger. Hypocrite, yes… but tree hugger, no.

Arnie gunning to be Obama's energy czar

Arnold Schwarzenegger, the outgoing Republican governor of California, has indicated he would accept a position as an "energy czar" in President Barack Obama's Democratic administration.

Schwarzenegger suggested he would like to go to Washington and influence national policy on clean energy use, and promote environmentalism. The former Hollywood action star has until now refused to disclose what he plans to do after he leaves office next month.

Giving his first indication of what direction he wanted to pursue, Schwarzenegger said he was a "very big believer in environmental issues" and wanted to build, at the national level, on legislation he enacted in California to reduce greenhouse-gas emissions.

Schwarzenegger suggested he was an ideal person to appeal to the American public at large on environmental issues because of his "celebrity power, knowledge and experience."

He added that energy consumers were more likely to listen to him about the need for reform because he would not be seen as a radical, adding: "People are very receptive when I talk about these things because I'm a Hummer driver, not a tree hugger."

Schwarzenegger did much to popularize gas-guzzling Hummer vehicles 20 years ago, but has since had his own converted to run on vegetable oil. California is now promoting aggressively the use of electric cars.

His intentions to affect national policy have already gone as far as planning a visit to Washington with George Shultz, the former secretary of state in the Reagan administration. They will call for a bipartisan approach on energy policy and focus on the need to reduce U.S. dependence on foreign oil supplies.

Asked if he would accept a position from Obama, Schwarzenegger replied that he would.
