Mysterious "missile" launch seen off Los Angeles coast a "problem of perspective"

    9 November 2010 1,015 views 4 Comments

LOS ANGELES (BNO NEWS) -- A suspected missile launch was seen on Monday afternoon over California's southwestern Pacific coast, and after government officials have remained uncertain about its origin, a group of scientists on Tuesday explained that it is a simple a problem of perspective.

A KCBS-TV news helicopter in Los Angeles captured the large "missile" at around 5 p.m. local time. According to the crew, the location of the missile was about 35 miles into the sea, west of Los Angeles and north of Catalina Island.

While a Navy spokesperson said no activity was reported during that time, California's Vandenberg Air Force Base said no launches had been conducted since Friday's Delta II rocket, which carried an Italian satellite into orbit.

A spokesperson from the Pentagon later said they were still trying to resolve what the contrail was caused by, but that it was not activity from the Department of Defense as they held talks with the Air Force, Navy and the North American Aerospace Defense Command.

However, it seems perspective played a trick on the viewers' eyes, and the contrail was probably formed by an airplane.

According to contrailscience.com, the idea that it is a missile launch originates from three misconceptions: "firstly that the trail is vertical – it's not, it's a horizontal trail, at around 32,000 feet (about six miles); secondly, the misconception of direction, that it's flying away from the viewer, when it's actually flying towards the viewer; and thirdly, the idea that it goes all the way down to the ground."

Just as we view completely "straight" roads while driving, in reality, it is just the angle we view it from. A snapshot of the roads from an airplane would reveal that they are not straight lines. The contrail is no more vertical than the road is, the website states.

While the "base" of the contrail seems wider than the tip, which tells the brain that this means the base is closer and the object is flying away, in reality, it has simply been spread by the wind.

"Imagine if a plane with a 100 mile long spreading contrail were coming towards you; what would it look like? It would look exactly like this," contrailscience.com explains.

The third misconception creates the illusion that the base goes all the way down to the ground, which would be true if the Earth were flat, contrailscience.com notes. "But the Earth is round, and things go beneath the horizon eventually, no matter how high they are. A plane 200 miles away but five miles up is always below the horizon. If the horizon is raised (as it is here, with Catalina Island), then the distance is less."

According to Ross Marsden, from New Zealand's Metservice, in order for contrails to form, the ambient air temperature needs to be lower than a certain temperature, which mostly depends on the altitude and the relative humidity.

In addition, it depends on the jet engine type and engine efficiency. Usually contrails dissipate a few plane-lengths behind the aircraft, but if the air is moist enough to be ice-saturated they will remain in the sky and behave like any other cirrus cloud. Persistent contrails eventually dissipate or merge with other cirrus, Marsden explains.

Reports of the supposed "missile" all came from the same area, the coast of San Clemente, Orange County, California. People in other areas, such as Los Angeles, would have simply seen a contrail not worth mentioning because of perspective.

    Here ya go...
US test fires secret missile off CA

    Tue Nov 9, 2010 7:37PM

This image captured by a KCBS News helicopter shows an unidentified projectile launched from an unknown point in the Pacific Ocean, off the coast of Los Angeles, Nov. 8, 2010.

The US has launched a missile off Southern California amid concerns that the country has been secretly developing advanced weapons to increase its military dominance.

A dramatic image of the launch was captured on video on Monday evening by a KCBS news helicopter flying over Los Angeles.

Local news stations said the missile appeared to have been launched by a US Navy vessel.

However, the US Navy and the Air Force have not offered an explanation about the launch.

When contacted by media outlets, Navy officials said they were unaware of a missile launch in the cited area.

Colonel Dave Lapan, a Pentagon spokesman, said on Tuesday that it did not appear that the reported event was part of a "regularly scheduled missile test."

Meanwhile, the US Northern Command said it had launched an investigation into the incident.

"At this time, we are unable to provide specific details, but we are working to determine the exact nature of this event. We can confirm that there is no indication of any threat to our nation and we will provide more information as it becomes available," the military command said in a statement.

The report comes as the United States has been making efforts to upgrade its nuclear arsenal and unconventional weapons.

Meanwhile, the US-led foreign forces in Afghanistan have launched a massive military operation in the southern province of Kandahar, causing extensive damage -- especially to civilian property.

The western military alliance has announced the test of new powerful weapons during the operation.

Witnesses said NATO bombs and missiles have damaged villagers' houses and farms which are the residents' only source of income.

The US military adventurism comes as the United Nations announced recently that Afghan civilian deaths had soared by over 30 percent in 2010 compared to the same period last year.

Missile Shot Off Los Angeles Still a Mystery for Pentagon Officials

    Published November 09, 2010
    | FoxNews.com

    KCBS

Nov. 8: An unexplained missile is shot off the California coast.

A video that appears to show a missile launch off the coast of California is so far "unexplained" by anyone in the military, a Pentagon spokesman told reporters Tuesday morning

Col. Dave Lapan said he is not able to concur with an official from North American Aerospace Defense Command/U.S. Northern Command who told Fox News earlier that there was "no threat to the homeland."

Lapan said the military doesn't know exactly what the so-called mystery missile was so can't say it's harmless.

A local CBS affiliate in Los Angeles on Monday evening captured on video the image of the "spectacular" projectile flying about 35 miles out to sea, west of Los Angeles and north of Catalina Island.

The Missile Defense Agency told Fox News it did not launch any test missile Monday night that could explain the dramatic images. The Navy and the Air Force were also unable to offer an explanation.

Lapan said it does not appear that whatever was flying was part of a "regularly scheduled missile test." He noted that before a missile test, notifications are sent to mariners and airmen. This does not appear to be the case here.

At this point, the military is working only with video taken from the local news camera, and NORAD and Northcom apparently were not able to detect the contrail on their own.

It appears from the video, Lapan said, the object was launched from the water and not U.S. soil, though at this point there is no way to be certain.

If a test missile or an accidental missile was launched in the region it would have either come from Naval Air Station Point Mugu or Vandenberg Air Force Base. At sea it could have come from a U.S. submarine or a surface ship. But so far, it all remains a mystery.

Ummm the idea of "perspective" is utter nonsense.

Ok... check the weather folks. Weather could give you some interesting visual situations where an inversion can cause you to see things that are more distant, reflected off the sky and things like that.

HOWEVER, there's a very, very important clue here.... I'll post it shortly.

Ok, check this very carefully. Look at the image capture. Look at the object at the top of the flight. I'll get back in a minute.

Peterle - CNN's international broadcast is different than the US version. They tailor it to a broadly global interest rather than a more US centric version we get in the State. I watch it when I travel in Asia and Mexico.

Peterle is right about the location of contrails, however, Peterle they are saying that "we are viewing a more distant event due to some condition of the atmosphere" and that condition is actually causing us to see a plane which is way up in the sky..... lol

Chinese General Threatens Use of A-Bombs if U.S. Intrudes

    By JOSEPH KAHN
    Published: July 15, 2005

BEIJING, Friday, July 15 - China should use nuclear weapons against the United States if the American military intervenes in any conflict over Taiwan, a senior Chinese military official said Thursday.

"If the Americans draw their missiles and position-guided ammunition on to the target zone on China's territory, I think we will have to respond with nuclear weapons," the official, Maj. Gen. Zhu Chenghu, said at an official briefing.

General Zhu, considered a hawk, stressed that his comments reflected his personal views and not official policy. Beijing has long insisted that it will not initiate the use of nuclear weapons in any conflict.

But in extensive comments to a visiting delegation of correspondents based in Hong Kong, General Zhu said he believed that the Chinese government was under internal pressure to change its "no first use" policy and to make clear that it would employ the most powerful weapons at its disposal to defend its claim over Taiwan.

"War logic" dictates that a weaker power needs to use maximum efforts to defeat a stronger rival, he said, speaking in fluent English. "We have no capability to fight a conventional war against the United States," General Zhu said. "We can't win this kind of war."

Whether or not the comments signal a shift in Chinese policy, they come at a sensitive time in relations between China and the United States.

The Pentagon is preparing the release of a long-delayed report on the Chinese military that some experts say will warn that China could emerge as a strategic rival to the United States. National security concerns have also been a major issue in the $18.5 billion bid by Cnooc Ltd., a major Chinese oil and gas company, to purchase the Unocal Corporation, the American energy concern.

China has had atomic bombs since 1964 and currently has a small arsenal of land- and sea-based nuclear-tipped missiles that can reach the United States, according to most Western intelligence estimates. Some Pentagon officials have argued that China has been expanding the size and sophistication of its nuclear bombs and delivery systems, while others argue that Beijing has done little more than maintain a minimal but credible deterrent against a nuclear attack.

Beijing has said repeatedly that it would use military force to prevent Taiwan from becoming a formally independent country. President Bush has made clear that the United States would defend Taiwan.

Many military analysts have assumed that any battle over Taiwan would be localized, with both China and the United States taking care to ensure that it would not expand into a general war between the two powers.

But the comments by General Zhu suggest that at least some elements of the military are prepared to widen the conflict, perhaps to persuade the United States that it could no more successfully fight a limited war against China than it could against the former Soviet Union.

"If the Americans are determined to interfere, then we will be determined to respond," he said. "We Chinese will prepare ourselves for the destruction of all the cities east of Xian. Of course the Americans will have to be prepared that hundreds of cities will be destroyed by the Chinese."

General Zhu's threat is not the first of its kind from a senior Chinese military official. In 1995, Xiong Guangkai, who is now the deputy chief of the general staff of the People's Liberation Army, told Chas W. Freeman, a former Pentagon official, that China would consider using nuclear weapons in a Taiwan conflict. Mr. Freeman quoted Mr. Xiong as saying that Americans should worry more about Los Angeles than Taipei.

Foreign Ministry officials did not immediately respond to requests for comment about General Zhu's remarks.

General Zhu said he had recently expressed his views to former American officials, including Mr. Freeman and Adm. Dennis C. Blair, the former commander in chief of the United States Pacific Command.

David Lague of The International Herald Tribune contributed reporting for this article.

The uninvited guest: Chinese sub pops up in middle of U.S. Navy exercise, leaving military chiefs red-faced

    By MATTHEW HICKLEY

    Last updated at 00:13 November 10 2007

When the U.S. Navy deploys a battle fleet on exercises, it takes the security of its aircraft carriers very seriously indeed.

At least a dozen warships provide a physical guard while the technical wizardry of the world's only military superpower offers an invisible shield to detect and deter any intruders.

That is the theory. Or, rather, was the theory.

Uninvited guest: A Chinese Song Class submarine, like the one that sufaced by the U.S.S. Kitty Hawk

American military chiefs have been left dumbstruck by an undetected Chinese submarine popping up at the heart of a recent Pacific exercise and close to the vast U.S.S. Kitty Hawk - a 1,000ft supercarrier with 4,500 personnel on board.

By the time it surfaced the 160ft Song Class diesel-electric attack submarine is understood to have sailed within viable range for launching torpedoes or missiles at the carrier.

According to senior Nato officials the incident caused consternation in the U.S. Navy.

The Americans had no idea China's fast-growing submarine fleet had reached such a level of sophistication, or that it posed such a threat.

One Nato figure said the effect was "as big a shock as the Russians launching Sputnik" - a reference to the Soviet Union's first orbiting satellite in 1957 which marked the start of the space age.

The incident, which took place in the ocean between southern Japan and Taiwan, is a major embarrassment for the Pentagon.

Battle stations: The Kitty Hawk carries 4,500 personnel

The lone Chinese vessel slipped past at least a dozen other American warships which were supposed to protect the carrier from hostile aircraft or submarines.

And the rest of the costly defensive screen, which usually includes at least two U.S. submarines, was also apparently unable to detect it.

According to the Nato source, the encounter has forced a serious re-think of American and Nato naval strategy as commanders reconsider the level of threat from potentially hostile Chinese submarines.

It also led to tense diplomatic exchanges, with shaken American diplomats demanding to know why the submarine was "shadowing" the U.S. fleet while Beijing pleaded ignorance and dismissed the affair as coincidence.

Analysts believe Beijing was sending a message to America and the West demonstrating its rapidly-growing military capability to threaten foreign powers which try to interfere in its "backyard".

The People's Liberation Army Navy's submarine fleet includes at least two nuclear-missile launching vessels.

Its 13 Song Class submarines are extremely quiet and difficult to detect when running on electric motors.

Commodore Stephen Saunders, editor of Jane's Fighting Ships, and a former Royal Navy anti-submarine specialist, said the U.S. had paid relatively little attention to this form of warfare since the end of the Cold War.

He said: "It was certainly a wake-up call for the Americans.

"It would tie in with what we see the Chinese trying to do, which appears to be to deter the Americans from interfering or operating in their backyard, particularly in relation to Taiwan."

In January China carried a successful missile test, shooting down a satellite in orbit for the first time.

    Ok...

I retract everything I have thought all day.

    I have a new theory.

It was the the Japanese. We haven't heard anything because the Captain of the vessel, or the technicians or all of the above comitted sepaku....

    Seriously.

We're working with them on missiles to protect themselves against China, or so the rumors are. Why NOT it was an accidental launch after all.

    It was not OUR people.

There is NO THREAT to the US.

"It was not a foreign government" per se... it was someone aboard a foreign vessel who JUST HAPPENS to be a US citizen, contractor or military person who can be disavowed.....

It was not a "foreign country" per se because we know there were no "foreign vessels" in our territory... except those we SANCTION.

The US can NOT come out and say "We were working with them and there was a missile accident". We have to wait on the other people to admit it.... or not as the case may be.

If they don't admit it, the US government can pretend to be in the dark. Our missile defense will be "questioned" but probably not cut. In fact, we might get more money... and Obama did NOT beat feet home....

The White House, by the way, has "Said Nothing".

    The Pentagon CAN'T say anything.

The Military by default must wait for the Pentagon to say something (who can't).

So - the military/NORAD/Northcom says "It wasn't a foreign government" and "there is no threat to the US". Both of these things can follow to be absolutely true if it wasn't a US Naval Vessel that was involved, or more importantly it WAS a US vessel involved, but was loaded with FOREIGN NATIONALS!

    Think about it!

The Pentagon isn't freaking out. We're not moving (as far as I know) the 7th fleet to come protect us. The Military's alert status didn't go any higher.

My contention is WE KNOW who did it, we can't SAY, we have to wait on them, they were FRIENDLY to us, but they weren't us, the missile turned WEST and headed off across the sea, there has been no one come forward to admit it yet.... it HAS to be the Japanese.

By the way.... RUMOR has it, ONLY THE CHOPPER caught the video.

Have there been other images, videos, photos? Has anyone from Catalina Is. checked in? Has there been people saying things about what they saw last night?

If no one else got it on video or pictures - then this whole thing will simply go away.

Further, I am a little confused how some scientist can say "It was a plane contrail" if only the chopper saw it - because, honestly this reminds me of J. Allen Hynek and his most famous (or infamous) "It's swamp gas" remark, which he LATER retracted (UFO fame for those unfamiliar).

honestly if there are no other images or videos... then this can and will "go away".

Update From NORTHCOM on Mystery Contrail

I spoke with folks at NORTHCOM, and they intend to put out a press statement shortly that notes the contrail seen near Los Angeles last night is not a foreign military launched missile. At this time NORTHCOM cannot confirm what it is in the video.

A multi-agency process has begun to identify the contrail, and at this time they are still not sure. I will post the contents and link to the press statement to this post when their statement gets posted online.

Ok, I've watched the video I'm looking at over and over, the thing was NOT AN AIRPLANE!

It was too far away to have been moving as fast as it was, there were FLAMES on the backside of the thing, it was flying upward erratically and SPINNING. Planes don't fly that fast straight up on fire and they sure as fuck don't travel at mach 2.5 or more.

That thing was over 35 MILES from the helicopter filming it, and it was moving across several arc seconds of sky each second.... let me calculate something....I'll get back
