Default Breakthrough! Scientists Create and Capture Antimatter

Breakthrough! Scientists Create and Capture Antimatter
    November 17, 2010

Scientists working on the big bang machine in Geneva have done the seemingly impossible: create, capture and release antimatter.

The development could help researchers devise laboratory experiments to learn more about this strange substance, which mostly disappeared from the universe shortly after the Big Bang around 14 billion years ago.

Trapping any form of antimatter is difficult, because as soon as it meets normal matter -- the stuff Earth and everything on it is made out of -- the two annihilate each other in powerful explosions.

In a new study, physicists at the European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN) in Geneva were able to create 38 antihydrogen atoms and preserve each for more than one-tenth of a second. The project was part of the ALPHA (short for Antihydrogen Laser PHysics Apparatus) experiment, an international collaboration that includes physicists from the University of California, Berkeley and Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (LBNL).

The antihydrogen atoms are composed of a positron (an antimatter electron) orbiting an antiproton nucleus.

"We are getting close to the point at which we can do some classes of experiments on the properties of antihydrogen," said Joel Fajans, a University of California, Berkeley professor of physics, and LBNL faculty scientist. "Since no one has been able to make these types of measurements on antimatter atoms at all, it's a good start."

Antimatter, first predicted by physicist Paul Dirac in 1931, has the opposite charge of normal matter and annihilates completely in a flash of energy upon interaction with normal matter. Antimatter is produced during high-energy particle interactions on Earth and in some decays of radioactive elements.

In 1955, University of California, Berkeley physicists Emilio Segre and Owen Chamberlain created antiprotons in the Bevatron accelerator at the Lawrence Radiation Laboratory (now called Lawrence Berkeley), confirming their existence and earning the scientists the 1959 Nobel Prize in physics.

To create antihydrogen and keep it from immediately annihilating, the ALPHA team cooled antiprotons and compressed them into a matchstick-size cloud. Then the researchers nudged this cloud of cold, compressed antiprotons so it overlapped with a like-size positron cloud, where the two particles mated to form antihydrogen.

All this happened inside a magnetic bottle that traps the antihydrogen atoms. The magnetic trap is a specially configured magnetic field that uses an unusual and expensive superconducting magnet to prevent the antimatter particles from running into the edges of the bottle -- which is made of normal matter and would annihilate with the antimatter on contact.

"For the moment, we keep antihydrogen atoms around for at least 172 milliseconds -- about a sixth of a second -- long enough to make sure we have trapped them," said Jonathan Wurtele, a University of California, Berkeley professor of physics and LBNL faculty scientist.

The team's results will be published online Nov. 17 in the journal Nature.

Does the collision of matter and anti-matter produce energy? How much energy does it produce in proportion to it's atomic mass? Are there any harmful byproducts of this collision?

If anti-matter collisions result in is less energy coming in than energy going out, then we have the makings of a Star Trek like universe (inter-stellar travel, replicators, unlimited energy supply on earth, etc etc).

Yes. Extreme amounts of energy, roughly an order of 4 times more than a nuclear... I think I said that right.

How much energy does it produce in proportion to it's atomic mass?
The energy per unit mass (9×1016 J/kg) (Had to look that up, sorry, I don't remember this stuff right off the top of my head any more. That's from wikipedia)

Are there any harmful byproducts of this collision?
Most LIKELY... yes. Gamma radiation, beta and alpha particles would be logical subsets of a matter-antimatter annihilation. Since antimatter is the "mirror image" of matter you have protons and anti-protons. If a proton has a positive charge, it follows that an antiproton must have a negative charge. Electrons and Positrons would be opposites and so forth.

All other such exotic matter (anti-matter that is) would have similarly opposite parameters.

So... in essence there would be some sort of radiation during such a contact, including but not limited to photon energy.

If anti-matter collisions result in is less energy coming in than energy going out, then we have the makings of a Star Trek like universe (inter-stellar travel, replicators, unlimited energy supply on earth, etc etc).
No, I suspect that the law of conservation of mass and energy will remain consistent throughout the universe (ours anyway) and any antimatter here would simply react on our quantum rules (whatever the hell those are today).

On the other hand, could they effectively create a matter-antimatter engine? Perhaps. If they could and bent the very nature of our quantum physics then certainly a "Star Trek like" galaxy could indeed become a reality to some lesser degree.

    Example - a proton hits an anti-proton.

2 times the mass of a proton times the speed of light squared.

Which from a single particle would be unnoticeable to us. But ramp it up to a kilogram of protons hitting a kilogram of anti-protons...

    1 kg = 5.6 x 10 ^ 29 MeV/c2
    1 MeV = 1.62 x 10 -13 joules
    1 ton of tnt = 4.184 x 10 ^ 9 joules

Mashing all those together gives a conversion of 1 kg of matter converted completely to energy gives the equivalent of about 21.677 million tons of TNT. I'd like to be on another planet if that goes off.

But good luck isolating off and containing a 1 kg of pure protons and a 1 kg pure anti-protons. LOL

I wouldn't want to be within a parsec myself without decent shielding from the radiation.

I probably sound like an idiot asking this, but what does antimatter prove? Again, sorry, science is not my strength.

A good 5 min read on the basics of antimatter is here:

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anti_matter

It doesn't prove anything, per sea. It simply is. And until very recently has been purely theoretical. So theoretical it was almost mythical. But it is now observable and factual.

to me, anti-particles were once a mathematical myth. now it's fact. at least with our current understanding of mathematics on a quantum level.

the focus on figures above is in kg's. however, what about micrograms? you stand in a sealed garage with the car running and you'll die. just need to learn how to harness the power of a matter/anti-matter engine and how to deal with it's byproducts. we have nuclear submarines now that have extremely harmful waste. but we don't worry about that kind of stuff anymore because we know how to deal with contamination and disposal. however, even in the star trek universe, they talk about being exposed to an "unshielded energy source". when that happens, you start to pass through matter, you skin melts, and you have an all around bad day. at this point it's all a matter of what type of sustainable energy can be produced from those types of collisions (they are supposed to annihilate one another?). so far, it's FAR from cheap. far from safe. and far from usable on a personal scale.

The biggest limiting factor in the large scale production of antimatter is the availability of antiprotons. Recent data released by CERN states that, when fully operational, their facilities are capable of producing 107 antiprotons per minute.[25] Assuming an 100% conversion of antiprotons to antihydrogen, it would take 100 billion years to produce 1 gram or 1 mole of antihydrogen (approximately 6.02×1023 atoms of antihydrogen).
Hah! 1 gram takes 100 billion years! And that's from the LHC! Lol. NO way we are even close to replicating this technology for engine use yet. I was hoping i would get to "see something" before i left. :-)

Anti-particles haven't been myth for a very long time. It was first postulated (as a joke) in 1928...

In 1932 the first predicted particle (a positron) was discovered in cosmic rays...

What is significant about this particular "discovery" is that they have assembled (ASSEMBLED) the first full ATOM. Not just a particle.

What is also significant is that this puts a new spin (ok, sorry about the pun) quantum physics.

Hey, every technology starts somewhere. No doubt in 20 years we'll look back on our first dabblings in antimatter creation the same way we look back on computers of 20 years ago. I've got more computing power in my cell phone than the entire computer lab of my University 20 years ago.

    /chuckles

Well, honestly, this is a guess on my part.

However, this statement is not true.

Give them a little time and some technology and they will probably change that limitation.

    Reading wikipedia again? lol

    Read it again.

    It won't ever reach e=mc^2

It won't ever reach that amount.

The total conversion of mass to energy is not 100% efficient.

    Read it again.

    Well, thats all true.

I'm just saying... we can make a few particles. And one atom so far.
