    Default Solar Mega-filament

Space Weather News for Dec. 6, 2010
    http://spaceweather.com

A spectacular filament of magnetism is snaking around the sun's southeastern limb. From end to end it stretches more than 700,000 km--a full solar radius or almost twice the distance from Earth to the Moon. The massive structure is an easy target for backyard telescopes (monitoring is encouraged) and it has the potential for an impressive eruption if it happens to collapse in the hours or days ahead. Check http://spaceweather.com for pictures and updates.

It's mind boggeling to even begin to think about how much power is in that single strand. And just how beautiful that raw unharnessed fury is.

2012 is going to be a huge let down for a lot of people.

...unless of course the invisible man in the sky shows up and does battle with the forces of evil, then it'd be a real hoot.

Well... As someone who was deeply involved with computer rebuilds and such prior to Y2K I can tell you that it wasn't a big deal because we actually worked to mitigate the problems it might have caused.

I started where I work in 1997 and people were talking about Y2K for about 3 years prior.

I know for a FACT we had major systems used by the military and defense that would have simply been WRONG and screwed up a whole LOT of stuff had we not replaced them, and reworked a good portion of the coding used.

Truth is, if we had done NOTHING at all - a lot of bad things would have happened.

The difference is, y2k was a man-made problem.

The Mayan calendar issue (while being man made of course) isn't based on any scientific knowledge whatsoever. It's an "urban myth" that the world will suddenly end the day the Mayan calendar ends.

They will see the truth on the 22nd of December... and feel pretty stupid.

(Of course, my bet is on someone to "recalculate" the "End" too)
