Turkey mobilizes for Crimea after 160 years

The Crimean peninsula, scene of one of most important military struggles of the last years of the Ottoman Empire, has made a surprising comeback to the world scene after the events in Ukraine. Russia's moves of sending troops to Crimea, in an effort to sever it from Ukraine, prompted Ankara and Western capitals to react. Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutolgu, who went to Kiev last Friday, met with the former speaker of the Tatar National Assembly, Mustafa Abdulcemil Kirimoglu, and declared: “If the term is appropriate, we are in 'mobilization' to defend the rights of our kin in Crimea by doing whatever is necessary.”

Summary⎙ Print In its dealings with the crisis in Ukraine, Ankara is showing particular interest in the Crimean peninsula, given that Turkey has deep ties with the ethnic Tartars in this region.

    Original ArticleORİJİNAL YAZIYI TÜRKÇE OKUYABİLİRSİNİZ

The word "mobilization," which Davutoglu had selected carefully. was an excellent indicator, although not with military connotation, of the urgency of the issue for Turkey. Turkey, which had refrained from taking a too-visible position about the Ukrainian popular revolt so as not to upset Russia, however took a clear position siding with the West when the issue became Crimea. A senior official I spoke with yesterday, March 3, said: “Crimea has important strategic importance for all of Europe. Perhaps Syria and Egypt are more dramatic issues, more mediagenic, but Crimea is a more strategic one.”

Over the weekend there were intensive contacts about Crimea between Western capitals and Ankara. Davutoglu had frequent telephone contacts with German, US and Eastern European allies. Crimea is important for Ankara not only because of its location as a gate to the Black Sea, but also because of Muslim Crimean Tatars.

Crimean Tatars, who were part of the Ottoman Empire till the end of the 18th century, are ethnically and culturally close to Turkey. Crimean Tatars, who were subjected to deportation and ethnic pressure during the Cold War, are actually an extension of Anatolian geography just like Kirkuk Turkmen. They speak Turkish and since the last quarter of the 19th century there has been a sizable Crimean diaspora in Turkey.

Turkey believes that the rights of the Crimean Tatars, with whom it has been in close relations with since the first days of the republic, will be better preserved not under Russian control but within the territorial integrity of Ukraine. Turkey’s Agency for Cooperation and Coordination (TIKA) and other institutions had established close ties with the Crimean Tatars who had been trying to reassert their identities.

Foreign Ministry sources I spoke with yesterday said: “We are not looking at Ukraine solely from a Crimean perspective. But it is also true that Crimea has special importance for us. They speak Turkish and we have deep cultural ties with Crimean Tatars. Historically, Crimea was a part of the Ottoman Empire.”

Davutoglu in his Kiev contacts emphasized the importance of territorial integrity of Ukraine and pointed to the need for the new government to be “all-embracing” instead of provoking pro-Russia elements. But the signs on the ground point to an escalation of the crisis. Reports reaching Ankara and EU capitals on Saturday said Russia was launching what appears to an invasion of Crimea. Even before the decision of the Russian parliament, 6,000 Russian soldiers had surrounded the state offices, took over the airports and closed the air space. Turkish officials say these developments are causing concern.

A senior official said before anything else Ankara favors the territorial integrity of Ukraine, and added: “On Ukraine and Crimea we share the positions of the West.” This, in a way, paints a picture about the balance of forces in Europe 160 years ago.

The Crimean peninsula was separated from the Ottoman Empire with the 1774 Karlowitz Treaty and became the cause of a similar strategic struggle between the European powers and Russia in the mid-19th century. In the 1853-56 Crimean War, the Ottomans fought alongside the British and French against Russia, despite the extremely high costs it had to pay

Why There Will Be War in Ukraine

The current crisis is not about Crimea. It is about the rights of Russian-speakers throughout Ukraine whom the Kremlin wants to protect from violence and discrimination. Russia does not want a military intervention in Crimea and does not want to take Crimea from Ukraine.

There is a political solution to this crisis. First, create a coalition government in Kiev composed of all parties, including those from the east and south of the country. The current government is dominated by anti-Russian extremists from western Ukraine.

If the extremists who seized power in Kiev do not accept Russia's democratic proposals, Russia will likely be forced to revert to military means to solve the crisis in Ukraine.

Second, Ukraine needs to draft a democratic constitution that has guarantees for Ukraine's Russian-speaking population that would grant official status to the Russian language and establish the principle of federalism.

Third, presidential and parliamentary elections must be held soon. Independent election observers must play an active role in ensuring that the elections are free and fair. There is a real danger that they will be manipulated by the neo-Nazi militants who de facto seized power in a coup.

If these democratic and peaceful solutions to the crisis in Ukraine are rejected by the opposition forces that have seized power in Kiev, I am afraid that Russia will have no other choice but to revert to military means. If the junta leaders want to avoid war, they need to adopt Moscow's peaceful and democratic proposals and adhere to them.

Those currently in power in Kiev are carrying out a political strategy that is not so much pro-European as it is anti-Russian, as evidenced by the surprisingly heavy-handed tactics the U.S. and European Union have employed in Ukraine. In the end, a minority executed a violent coup that removed the democratically elected and legitimate president of Ukraine.

The Kremlin believes that the current Ukrainian leadership will manipulate the elections planned for May 25 to install a single leader or coalition government functioning much as former Georgian President Mikheil Saakashvili did in Tbilisi. A "Ukrainian Saakashvili" will unleash an even more repressive campaign of intimidation against Russian-speakers, one that over several years would stoke anti-Russia hysteria among the general population.

After that, Kiev may evict Russia's Black Sea Fleet from Sevastopol and purge Crimea of any Russian influence. Ukraine could easily become a radicalized, anti-Russian state, at which point Kiev will fabricate a pretext to justify taking subversive action against Moscow. This looks especially likely considering that ruling coalition members from the neo-fascist Svoboda and Right Sector parties have already made territorial claims against Russia. They could easily send their army of activists to Russia to join local separatists and foment rebellion in the North Caucasus and other unstable regions in Russia. In addition, Russia's opposition movement will surely want to use the successful experience and technology of the Euromaidan protests and, with the help and financial support of the West, try to carry out their own revolution in Moscow. The goal: to remove President Vladimir Putin from power and install a puppet leadership that will sell Russia's strategic interests out to the West in the same way former President Boris Yeltsin did in the 1990s.

The official census puts the Russian minority in Ukraine at 16 percent of the total population, although that number was falsified. The actual number is closer to 25 percent. Surveys indicate that 45 percent of the country's population speak Russian at home, 45 percent speak Ukrainian and 10 percent speak both languages. In the most recent Gallup survey, when asked in which language they would like to be polled, 83 percent of respondents chose Russian. Taking into account the rural population in western and central Ukraine, about 75 percent of the people, probably speak Russian. Of that 75 percent, only about 10 percent are those in Kiev and a few other major cities who supported the protests. This means that only 35 percent of the population are attempting to impose its will on the remaining 65 percent, using a violent coup to achieve their goals.

Putin made the right decision: He did not to wait for that attack and took preventative measures. Many in the West say the Kremlin's reactions were paranoiac, but Germany's Jews also thought the same of leaving the country in 1934. Most of them chose to believe they were safe and remained in Germany even after Hitler came to power. The infamous Kristallnacht took place five years later, one of the first early chapters in the "Final Solution." Similarly, just four years remain until Russia's presidential election in 2018, and there is a strong risk that subversive forces within and outside Russia will try to overthrow Putin, in part using their new foothold in Ukraine.

Will there be war in Ukraine? I am afraid so. After all, the extremists who seized power in Kiev want to see a bloodbath. Only fear for their own lives might stop them from inciting such a conflict. Russia is prepared to move its forces into southern and eastern Ukraine if repressive measures are used against the Russian-speaking population or if a military intervention occurs. Russia will not annex Crimea. It has enough territory already. At the same time, however, it will also not stand by passively while Russophobic and neo-Nazi gangs hold the people of Crimea, Kharkiv and Donetsk at their mercy.

It's all about Russia pressing the West. This isn't about Russian speakers in that country.

This is the biggest bunch of bullshit I've ever seen. The media and the governments are lying through their teeth.

Anyone who knows shit about Russia knows this is to see who has bigger balls, Putin or Obama.

    We already know it's Putin.

Russia Launches ICBM Despite Rising Tensions

Russia test fired an intercontinental ballistic missile today amid growing tensions between Moscow and Washington, but a U.S. official said the launch was planned in advance of the current crisis in Crimea.

The Russian Ministry of Defense announced the test of a RS-12 M ICBM that it said was designed “to test a promising start warheads of intercontinental ballistic missiles.”

A U.S. official confirmed the ICBM launch and said it was carried out through the protocols of the START Treaty.

Per the treaty requirements the official said the United States was notified of Russia’s planned launch long before the current crisis in Crimea.

The official said that the missile was fired east over the Caspian Sea and landed in a remote part of Kazakhstan.

That matches the information provided by the Russian Defense Ministry that the missile “struck a condition target on the range in Sary-Shagan, Kazakhstan.”

The planned launch comes at a time when Russia has raised international tensions by moving military forces into the Crimean peninsula, ostensibly to protect that region’s ethnic Russian population. The Russian action has led to international condemnation and the United States is considering punitive actions against Russia that could take the form of economic sanctions.

    ” - - - White House is announcing an aid package to Ukraine of $1 billion - - - “
FINALLY! A highly successful backward solution to all known problems comes out of the Nobel Peace Prize winning White House!
“What is that?, “ You may ask? The answer, of course, is unlimited amounts of unfunded US Taxpayer Debt Dollars!
Yup! Works every time, and faster than you can can say “IcandoanythingIwantbyjustbyoassingCongress.” Nobel Laurette Soetoro-Obama just says: “Charge it to the next generation, please! Whoopee! My work here is done! Golf anyone?”
Secretary of Statements John “Cachup” Kerry will ride in, start writing rubber checks, and the ensuing bright rosy glow will spread around the World. Well, maybe not onto “the Arab Street.”
Although the always weak, Obamanation Foreign Policy is well on the way to its usual backward success, there are still a few topics that have yet to be resolved, as follows:
    * Were is the Internet Video that caused the Ukrainians to force their beloved President to take the entire Ukrainian Treasury with him when he fled the country?
    * Will “Catchup” Kerry enlist the help of famed video detective Susan Rice to help him track down and jail the perp. who made this awful, obscure, unknown video, that the United States had nothing to do with?
    * Will the US Department of Statements spend more unfunded US Taxpayer Debt Dollars for the Ukranian Denial Ad than they did for the 2012 Benghazi Denial Ad?
    * Note: Kerry must excel here because due to the obvious cruel onslaught of the aging process on Mrs. Bill Clinton, “Catchup” Kerry may be duty-bound to replace her as the obvious Democrat frontrunner in the 2016 Presidential race.
    * Since POS Soetoro-Obama hit the famous RESET BUTTON on Russia, the NASA Space Program has had to be “dependent on the kindness of strangers” from Russia. Hopefully, our astronauts will be able to borrow food and vodka from the Russians while they wait for “Catchup” Kerry to resolve this Ukrainian “investment.”
    * Will buddy Vlad Putin be as flexible with the Renowned Obamanation Foreign Policy as Soetoro-Obama was with Putin?
    * Rumor has it that Vlad Putin has his eye on being awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for his defusing of the Syrian “Red Line” Crisis.
    * Another rumor is that Putin could win the Nobel Peace Prize if he sold all of Russia’s US Treasury Notes, requested that the USA be dropped from the G9, and appointed Snowden to be the Russian Ambassador to the United States of America.

Russia’s 3624th Air Base at the Erebuni airport in Yerevan previously hosted at least 16 MiG-29 Fulcrum fighter jets operating under the framework of air defense agreements concluded between the members of the Commonwealth of Independent States.

“A batch of fourth-generation MiG-29 multirole fighter jets has been put in service with the Russian airbase at Eerebuni after an extensive overhaul,” a spokesman for the Southern Military District, Col. Igor Gorbul, said without specifying the number of aircraft.

China is willing to boost its military ties with Mexico and deepen bilateral military exchanges and cooperation in various fields, he said.

Liang thanked the Mexican government for its support to China on the issues of Taiwan and Tibet.

Galvan said China is a great country, and Mexico has high expectations for boosting its military ties with China. The two sides can strengthen exchanges to expand military cooperation, the minister added.

BEIJING, Nov. 20 (Xinhua) -- Defense Minister Liang Guanglie met with delegates to the 1st China-Latin America high-level defense forum on Tuesday.

Liang hailed the increasingly close relations between China and Latin American countries in recent years, noting that the two sides have enjoyed frequent high-level visits, deepening political mutual trust, strengthening communication and cooperation, as well as effective coordination on major international affairs.

He said the forum shows that China attaches great importance to developing military relations with Latin American countries.

The forum has provided a platform for the two sides to communicate at the senior official level and will increase friendship and trust between the military leaders of both sides so as to develop future China-Latin American military relations, Liang said.

On behalf of the delegates, Pedro Siqueira, Uruguayan commander in chief of the army, said the forum has given Latin American countries more knowledge about China and it has also helped enhance communication between the militaries of both sides.

He expressed the hope that the Chinese military will pay more visits to Latin American countries in order to increase mutual understanding.

    - It is very well the largest airplane in the world as the Soviet Air Charter company so claims, and it has landed in Mexico of all places. Last Saturday, September 22rd, under the cover of night, an Antonov Russian strategic transport airplane, landed at the international Navy Air Base airport of Veracruz. This news was confirmed by Mexican General Heriberto Jara Corona, who heads the Aeronautics division of the Federal Secretary of Communications and Transport.

According to ‘off the record’ information gathered by the local media, the airship supposedly transported two Russian helicopters for the National Oceanic Force from Russia to Mexico. The questions remains, where are the helicopters, why are there no pictures of them? Are there any helicopters at all? Is something else being transported? Is Russia working with the Mexican armed forces in preparation for a full-scale invasion of the United States by bringing in military cargo into Mexican ports.

The notion of these helicopters being brought into Mexico for the Drug war does not convince anyone when it is the US-Mexico Merida Initiative that guarantees this type of equipment to fight the criminal insurgency that has left a whopping 120,000 Mexicans dead.

Nevertheless, the Mexican Airspace Navigation Service confirmed that the airship arrived directly at the naval air station de Las Bajadas belonging to the Secretariat of Navy – the Mexican Navy and soon carted to the platform of the civilian airfield, after 17 hours of flight without any stops.

The Anotov is used to transport loads of great dimensions. The airplane can incline to facilitate the entrance of payload and can take up to 150 tons of cargo, also up to 88 passengers in an upper deck behind the cabin. Nevertheless, due to the limited pressurization of the fuselage, it rarely transports parachutists.

It is well-known that these aircraft were designed initially for occasional military use which does not discard the fact that this may be a military operation made to look like a civilian transport plane. With the recent information that China is also using civilian cruisers like the Green pearl to transport troops and equipment, one needs to not underestimate the enemy forces and what their forms of operation are. Especially, when confirmation has come that China has at least 12 military bases in Mexico as reported by an Australian family member that has a relative that works at the Echelon, NSA, Pine Gap facility in Australia.

More than two decades have passed since the fake ”death of communism.” The West no longer perceives a threat to its existence from states holding, secretly or openly, to this ideology.

However, the revived Communist Bloc appears to be contemplating a real Red Dawn scenario. Using its Cold War-era beachhead in Central America, the neo-Soviet regime and its leftist allies in Latin America are even now preparing to attack the USA . . . in full view of the sleep-walking shopping mall regime and with the total complicity of the treasonous Obama Admin.

Moreover, Russian servicemen together with Nicaragua's armed forces will take part in a joint patrolling of the republic's territorial waters in the Caribbean Sea and the Pacific Ocean from January 1 to June 30, 2014.

The main task of these operations is to fight drug trafficking. The US servicemen were issued a similar permit.

Russia to expand its worldwide military presence

    .View gallery

MOSCOW (AP) — Russia says it plans to expand its worldwide military presence by seeking permission for navy ships to use ports in Latin America, Asia and elsewhere.

Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu said Wednesday in remarks carried by Russian news agencies the military was conducting talks with Algeria, Cyprus, Nicaragua, Venezuela, Cuba, Seychelles, Vietnam and Singapore.

He said that it was essential for the Russian navy to be able to call at their ports to service its ships.

Shoigu said Russia was also talking to some of those countries asking them to allow long-range bombers to use their air bases for refueling.

President Vladimir Putin has launched a massive military modernization program and sought to demonstrate Russia's global reach by sending navy ships to the Mediterranean, Latin America and other areas.

Looking for more sources to corroborate the article below, possible conspiracy post:

U.S. Satellites Detect Planes at Russian Nuclear Weapons Storage Facility

March 5, 2014 10:36 PM EST -- (TRN) -- U.S. Department of Defense satellite imagery has detected the arrival of more than thirty (30) Russian nuclear bombers to the airfield adjacent to Russia's Borisoglebsk national level nuclear weapons storage facility (Voronezh-45) and has observed numerous transfers from the storage facility to the aircraft, which are now standing-by along the two runways at the airport.

As shown on the map below, the Borisoglebsk national level nuclear weapons storage facility is located at latitude 51°21'47"N Longitude 41°55'38"E near the cities of Peski, Uryupinsk, Balashov, about 590 miles east of Kiev, Ukraine. (Map Here)

According to sources from the National Reconnaissance Office, yesterday there were only two Bomber aircraft at the airport to the east of the storage facility. This is typical for this facility and those aircraft can even be seen on old images used by Google Earth, HERE.

Early on March 5, U.S. satellites captured an image showing many bomber aircraft had arrived at the base. Later on March 5, a U.S. stealth surveillance drone, flown over the Russian base, showed more than thirty (30) such nuclear bomber aircraft had arrived at the airfield. Numerous transfers were observed by U.S. satellites, between the nuclear storage facility and the newly arrived aircraft. Those aircraft remain on the runway at the local airport at this hour, several with what appear to be Auxiliary Power Units (APU's) attached, indicating the aircraft are on 'stand-by" for immediate deployment.

When challenged as to how a drone could fly over a Russian military base without being detected and shot down, TRN was told "not all of our drones are detectable by radar and besides, the people at that base are often drunk."

    (1st drone pass upper portion)

Clearly, Ukraine poses no threat whatsoever to Russia, which begs the question: What is Russia preparing for? They certainly are not going to bomb Ukraine with 30 nuclear bombs, so what other targets do they have in mind; western Europe?

Just days ago, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov made clear to the west that Russia would retaliate if the west imposes sanctions upon Russia, and in a cryptic message, Lavrov stated that such retaliation "would be asymmetric." The definition of "asymmetric" is: having parts that fail to correspond to one another in shape, size, or arrangement; lacking symmetry. Launching multiple nuclear attacks against multiple countries in western Europe would certainly be asymmetic.

Perhaps this is why ham radio operators have been reporting a very unusual number of Emergency Action Messages (EAM's) being broadcast to U.S. Naval Vessels worldwide today, on frequency 8992.0 KHz.

From the May 1995 "Monitoring Times" magazine, the "Utility World" column on Page 33, "Several issues ago (Dec 94) we talked about the U.S. military's Emergency Action Messages (EAM) broadcast. Here is an interesting explanation, taken from a U.S. Air Force manual, of what an EAM is:

"Joint Chiefs of Staff Emergency Action Messages (EAMs) contain key instructions or information from high level authority and have predetermined formats (pro forma). Such messages are transmitted by various communications systems and normally carry FLASH precedence. They are vital messages of an extremely time-sensitive nature, and rapid processing is mandatory to obtain the fast reaction required by their content. Usage and handling procedures are of the highest classification and have been issued by the JCS only to those who have a need to know." (AFM-01-1-18, sub 3, amended 01 Jan 1990)."

The EAM's are, of course, encrypted, so we do not know what Emergency Messages are being FLASHED to U.S.

military around the world, but we now have a sense of what the subject matter may be and it is frightening. More details if they become available . . . .

March 5, 2014 -- (TRN) -- *** BREAKING NEWS *** The government of Turkey had GRANTED PERMISSION for a United States Navy warship to enter the Black Sea via the Bosporus Straight at Istanbul. The vessel is one ship from the USS George H.W. Bush Carrier Strike Group which arrived in the Aegean off the coast of Greece yesterday. It will enter the Black Sea within the next 48 hours, likely at night for security reasons.

Turkey is not saying which ship was given permission, but did say that it was NOT the George H.W. Bush. That means, at the very least, a U.S. Navy Destroyer or Guided Missile Cruiser will enter the Black Sea within the next 48 hours via the Bosporus Strait. Either type of vessel would bring enormous firepower to the region, and afford the United States the ability to respond quickly to developments on the Crimean peninsula - or elsewhere in the Ukraine.

Our previous story, reporting that the U.S. had dispatched an aircraft carrier strike group to the region, can be viewed HERE. Confirming source: HERE

In related news, NATO has suspended all military cooperation with Russia over the situation in the Ukraine.

At NATO headquarters in Brussels, Belgium, Secretary General Anders Fogh Rasmussen told reporters that the international body had decided to "put the entire range of NATO-Russia cooperation under review" to send "a clear message Russia's actions have consequences."

Planning for the first NATO-Russia joint mission -- the maritime escort of a U.S. ship involved in neutralizing chemical weapons -- has been suspended, though the decision will not affect the destruction of chemical weapons, he said. And no staff-level civilian or military meetings with Russia will take place "for now," Rasmussen said.

NATO Council decided today, to expand practical cooperation with Ukraine, including joint exercises. On March 5, said NATO Secretary General Anders Fogh Rasmussen on the results of an extraordinary meeting of the NATO Council in Ukraine.

He stressed that the decision on Ukraine's accession to NATO "belongs to the people of Ukraine," while "NATO's door remains open."

    OSCE TO SEND OBSERVERS

Eighteen countries of the Organisation for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) have decided to send their military observers to Ukraine.

The OSCE press service said the group would be made up of 35 unarmed military experts.

The matter was discussed at a joint meeting of the Permanent Council and the Forum for Security Co-operation (FSC) in Vienna on March 4, 2014.

The visit is taking place under Chapter III of the Vienna Document 2011, which allows for voluntary hosting of visits to dispel concerns about unusual military activities. Ukraine has requested all OSCE participating States to send military representatives from 5 to 12 March 2014, starting in Odessa. This is the first time this mechanism has been activated.

As of now, eighteen OSCE participating States have responded positively to the request sending up to two representatives each. Canada, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Hungary, Ireland, Latvia, Lithuania, Norway, Poland, Slovakia, Sweden, Turkey, United Kingdom, and the United States. One representative from the OSCE Conflict Prevention Centre will also be participating. The military visit participants are on their way to Ukraine now.

Also today, the Polish Parliament adopted a resolution of. solidarity with Ukraine, which stressed the territorial integrity of Ukraine, and also said that political and military actions of Russia against Ukraine, especially Crimea, are a violation of the rights of a sovereign state.

Lastly, The Pentagon has announced plans to more than double its commitment of aircraft to joint NATO-policing missions in the Baltics

SIMFEROPOL, Ukraine -- Lawmakers in the embattled Crimean region of Ukraine have decided to hold a referendum March 16 on whether Crimea should become part of Russia.
"This is our response to the disorder and lawlessness in Kiev," Sergei Shuvainikov, a member of the local Crimean legislature, said Thursday. "We will decide our future ourselves."
The parliament in Crimea, which enjoys a degree of autonomy under current Ukrainian law, voted 78 with eight abstentions in favor of holding the referendum. Local voters will also be given the choice of deciding to remain part of Ukraine, but with enhanced local powers.
According to Russian media, the Crimean parliament also formally requested that Moscow initiate the process by which Crimea could become part of the Russian Federation.
CBS News Moscow bureau chief Svetlana Berdnikova said reports suggested a new bill could be adopted by the Russian parliament as soon as next week, simplifying how regions of foreign states can join the Russian Federation. The State Duma, the lower house of Russia's legislature, was expected to consider Crimea's request in meetings next week.
There was no immediate response from the Ukrainian central government to the vote. On Wednesday, Ukraine's prime minister told The Associated Press that Crimea would remain part of Ukraine.

The move comes amid a tense but thus far peaceful standoff in Crimea as pro-Russian forces -- including dozens of trained soldiers wearing no insignia who the Kremlin insists are not Russian troops -- have either taken over or surrounded most Ukrainian military bases and ships. Ukraine is an ethnically divided nation; Crimea is home to a large number of ethnic Russians -- with a significant proportion of the regional population describing Russian -- rather than the Ukrainian spoken almost ubiquitously in the western half of the country -- as their native language.
CBS News' Elizabeth Palmer reported Wednesday that Ukrainian soldiers were refusing to leave their bases and sailors were refusing demands from Russian forces to abandon their ships. Palmer stood on the banks of a bay in Crimea Thursday morning, with the massive hull of a capsized ship protruding out of the water behind her. Ukrainian forces told her they suspected their Russian counterparts had sunk the vessel overnight to block access to the port.

Russia has effectively taken over the peninsula, which it officially controlled as part of its own territory until the mid-1990s, during the last week, prompting cries of an "invasion" and a "declaration of war" from Kiev's newly-installed leadership and an ongoing threat of sanctions against Moscow from the U.S. and Europe. Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov was to hold further discussions Thursday in Rome with Secretary of State John Kerry, who was unable to get Lavrov and leaders from the Ukrainian government to meet face-to-face in Paris the day before.
Foreign ministers from Ukraine, Russia and Western nations did agree Wednesday to continue discussions in the coming days on how to stabilize Ukraine and presented a number of ideas for reaching that goal, Kerry told reporters late Wednesday.

"We agreed to continue intense discussions in the coming days with Russia, with Ukrainians in order to see how we can help normalize the situation, stabilize it and overcome the crisis," Kerry told reporters.

But the high-stakes diplomacy comes with the threat from the U.S. government, which, according to Treasury Secretary Jack Lew, is "looking into a wide range of options" to respond to Russia's intervention in Ukraine, including sanctions and ways to increase Russia's political and economic isolation.

The White House also announced Thursday that President Obama had signed an executive order authorizing sanctions against "individuals and entities responsible for activities undermining democratic processes or institutions in Ukraine."

New visa restrictions were also imposed by the White House on Russians and Crimeans who it said were "threatening the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Ukraine."

European Union leaders, meanwhile, were holding an emergency summit in Brussels on Thursday to decide on imposing its own sanctions against Russia.

The EU leaders were gathering as the 28-nation bloc -- which depends on Russia for almost a third of its natural gas supply -- sought to find the right response to the conflict unfolding just beyond its eastern border in Ukraine.

British Prime Minister David Cameron said Europe "needs to send a very clear message to the Russian government that what has happened is unacceptable and should have consequences."

"Russia today is dangerous," said Lithuanian President Dalia Grybauskaite.

Okay, just a heads up guys. That article about the bombers at a nuclear weapon storage facility are from Turner Radio Network.

That's run by Hal TURNER, the big time conspiracy theorist, truther, and anti-Semite.

I would STRONGLY recommend sourcing that story from more reliable sources or redact it.

I won't put it past the Russians to be loading nukes on bombers. After all, this is as close as it comes to a West Vs Russia(Soviet Union) since 1989. Actually since the Cuban Missile Crisis.

Putin (Russians in general) do not like sissy boys. The so called "Reset" with Hillary when we shut down the MD shield was more of a "We're weak, we're trying to be nice" and the Russians simply said, "Thanks for that but we're not changing OUR strategy one bit". They didn't.

Now Putin, seen as a "strong man" for Russia is well liked, not just in Russia either, but in the world.

What Obama and Americans in general fail to grasp is that you don't win any pissing contests if you don't get out there an piss back. "Offering an olive branch" to the Russians is simply showing your cowardly streak, or cowering in front of them.

Planting nukes on your bombers and standing up to them would be a better face to put on. For the Russians, this would be the ultimate slap in the face to people like Obama and the Liberal-sissies in America.

He is calling them out and they are cowering.

Now, regardless of the source, I'm betting that there are things going on that are meant to do just that, slap Obama and his regime.

Russia's Western Military District Begins Massive Air Defense Drills Amid Crimea Standoff

MOSCOW, March 6 (RIA Novosti) – Russia’s Western Military District has begun large-scale air defense drills at its southern testing range of Kapustin Yar on the backdrop of further escalation of tensions with the West over Ukraine.

Kapustin Yar, located some 450 kilometers (280 miles) east of the Ukrainian border, will host about 3,500 troops and over 1,000 units of military hardware for about a month. The exercise will culminate with live-firing drills, involving S-300, Buk-M1 and other air defense systems.

“It is for the first time that all air defense units from the district, including coastal defenses of the Northern Fleet, have gathered in one place,” said the district’s spokesman, Col. Oleg Kochetkov.

“It is the largest-ever exercise held by air defense units of the Western Military District,” Kochetkov said, adding that the drills were part of a regular combat training cycle.

The exercise, however, coincides with further escalation of a political crisis in Ukraine that has led to the current standoff between Russia and the West over the fate of Crimea, an autonomous Ukrainian region with a majority ethnic Russian population.

Crimean authorities have refused to recognize as legitimate the new central government in Kiev, which ousted President Viktor Yanukovych late last month, and on Thursday they announced a decision to become part of Russia.

A popular vote to approve the decision will be held in Crimea on March 16.

Russia’s parliament has recently approved military intervention in Ukraine, while thousands of “local militia” allegedly under Russian command have taken control over Ukrainian military bases across Crimea in the past week.

Following these developments, the West showered Moscow with accusations of aggression and threats of sanctions while cutting off military exchanges with Russia and scrambling to bolster military cooperation within NATO.

The Pentagon announced plans on Wednesday to expand combat pilot training in Poland and to send six additional F-15C fighter jets to a NATO mission carrying out air patrols over Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania.

Patrols have been carried out on a three- to four-month rotation basis by 14 NATO states from Lithuania’s air base in Zokniai, near the northern city of Siauliai, since 2004 when the ex-Soviet republics joined the alliance.

The Estonian military said Thursday that the six US fighter jets as well as two KC-135 aerial refueling tankers landed at Zokniai, joining four US F-15s deployed there since January.
