Default State Of The Union Speech - 2011

Here's what I took away from it...

    • Obama plans to cripple our economy by making it harder for traditional energy providers to operate while throwing more money after "green" scams that, if they really worked, would succeed in the free market.
    • We need to stop deporting illegal alien students because these guys could be staffing our research labs rather than living in the shadows:

    • "...blah, blah, blah... Sputnik... blah, blah, blah... Caused NASA to be created and develop innovation and millions of jobs..." (paraphrased) So it is a good thing we are defunding NASA and canceling our viable manned space programs.
    • "...blah, blah, blah... Countries in Europe and Russia... blah, blah, blah..."
    • Obama is going to balance his massive socialist spending by further gutting our military.

And I didn't catch anything else after the first 45 minutes. I had to do something more constructive like taking my garbage out to the curb and starting my late dinner.

Didn't catch the GOP response either.

I became ill listening to Obama tell America how much the rest of the world is better than the US knowing that he is handing China our business and gave Russia our oil in the gulf.

He had the gall to bring up
NASA in his analogy about the Russians beating us in the 1960's in space.

The Joint Chiefs faces were motionless as he bragged about gays openly serving in the Military.

As I have said before Obama and company is doubling down on the social spending. When he spoke of not signing any legislation with earmarks in the future I wanted to break the television!

If you have high blood pressure or problems with stress, this event could be hazardous to your health!

All the talk of the Obama Administration going to the center should have been made clear last night because he is a full blown Marxist.

The Republican response was much better.

I sat and listened to the whole set of Jimmy Buffett albums I have last night on my iPod while working on my electronic library.

I had neither the inclination or the stomach to listen to a socialist.

We were just informed on Monday that the MDA will be cutting the work force by about 400-something people. Doesn't really sound like much but when you realize the MDA has perhaps less than 4000 people across the country running the places, bases and systems - that's a 10% reduction in force.

I will be pissed if I lose my job - but I don't think they will cut me or my two partners. We are already bare bones here for the past 6 years and have been doing our level best to maintain our systems with less money. Everyone has... so it's time to punish the people who do the work.

We have people who are in charge who make 100K to 200K who are management.

But when the missiles fly, they have little or nothing to do with button pushing, security, research and development, or maintenance. They are "managers". They direct people to do things, and take the credit for the hard work of the folks who work for them.

Hmmmm Where should the cuts start if they want to save money? I wonder. Cut the lower ranking guys, the newbs and those who clean the floors, fix the networks, keep communications going, repair and replace the computer systems... but you can BET YOUR ASS the managers won't be touched either voluntarily or forced.

If I lose my job, I'll simply put my house up for sale, AS IS, take a reduced amount of money - enough to pay the rest of the mortgage off and the small loan which is nearly done anyway, and walk away with about 100-180k

I can live for the next 5 years on that with a boat.

Chris Matthews: Obama will Address, try to Increase Gun Control in the Near Future

Posted by Aurelius at 8:12 AM Email This BlogThis! Share to Twitter Share to Facebook Share to Google Buzz

After the national tragedy in Arizona earlier this month, it is no surprise that President Obama would use it as political fodder. According to MSNBC commentator Chris Matthews, who had recently had lunch with the President, "there's going to be a special Presidential address on gun control" in the "near future."

However, in his State of the Union last night, the President did not even mention the subject of gun control, focusing instead on jobs and education. Matthews says that was a tactical move by the Administration, stating that President Obama did not want to make "headlines" about guns instead of jobs.

Here is the entire exchange on MSNBC:

Here is the transcript of Matthew's statement:

Matthews- There's going to be a special Presidential address on gun control. It has not been scheduled, but there's going to be one. In the near future.

Lawrence O'Donnell- Breaking news from Chris Matthews.

Matthews- Yes you can take it from me... So he's (Obama) not over-looking it, they must have made a tactical decision that it would be the headline tonight and they're looking for a economic/jobs headline tonight.

O'Donnell- I see what you're saying, you're saying it would have stolen what they wanted to deliver tonight.

Matthews- Well, a lot of the country it is the issue. It makes no sense to some people in the suburbs and in the cities and perhaps someplace in the rural areas, but in other areas in Western Pennsylvania, guns are it and I don't think he wanted to depress the news that he's trying to make about jobs tonight.

Levin: Obama is still the one he’s been waiting for

Posted by therightscoop on Jan 26, 2011 in Politics | 3 Comments

Levin writes this morning his insightful analysis of Obama and his SOTU speech. Bottom line is that Obama hasn’t changed one bit even though the political world is talking as though he has:
President Obama’s foot remains where it has been since the day he entered the Oval Office, on the gas pedal. He’s not braking for anyone or anything. All this pre-SOTU spin from Obama’s whisperers, gobbled up by the Obama-hungry media, was always nonsense. Obama has no intention of touching entitlements in any significant way, period. Why would he tamper with the New Deal and Great Society when he considers them a good start but insufficiently bold to advance his statist beliefs? Obama has no intention of honestly working with Republicans on health care, cap-and-trade, etc. These are hallmarks of his transformative agenda.

They define him and his presidency. His bureaucracy is working overtime to institute them.

It amazes me that some usually thoughtful people seize on anything they can find to argue, or hope, that Obama has been chastened by the last election. For weeks they’ve pointed to the tax deal as evidence of his “pivoting.”

Actually, what Obama did is tee-up the tax fight for a time when he believes his class warfare demagoguery can be best employed — during the final weeks of his re-election bid. He already started it last night. And, of course, the Republicans fell for it, hailing the tax deal as momentous. Obama is ready to deal some more, they reckoned — a sad delusion.

As a matter of basic logic, how could the biggest deficit-spender in American history reverse course and become a responsible fiscal hawk? It was never going to happen. How could a man who believes his lot in life is a matter of destiny, his and the nation’s, allow his legacy to be tainted by a Tea Party-driven election? In his mind, he won’t. “We are the ones we have been waiting for,” as he famously said about himself and his supporters. He’s not going to allow a single mid-term election, driven by what he perceives to be yahoos and miscreants, change the course of history — his history or the nation’s. Too many commentators just don’t comprehend this man.

The contradictions and ironies in his speech are too numerous to catalogue. Suffice it to point out a few of the most glaring examples. This is our Sputnik moment, he says, at the same time he is cutting NASA’s budget (one of the few programs he wants to cut), directed its top administrator to focus on Muslim outreach, and entered into a treaty with the Russians that weakens our strategic defense efforts.

Obama says he is willing to work with Republicans on reforming Obamacare, yet the GOP has offered several reforms that Obama has completely ignored for they focus on private alternatives and competition — neither of which are compatible with Obama’s top-down, government-driven ideology. He says Medicare and Medicaid are unsustainable, yet he not only offers no suggestions on how to reform them, he rejects his own Deficit Commission’s recommendations, uses Obamacare to expand Medicaid, and drains resources from Medicare. Obama’s idea of unleashing research, development, and science to create the new technologies and jobs of the future is centered on targeted federal grants and initiatives — bigger government, more spending, and more regulating.

It is, of course, the American private sector that is the engine of spectacular economic progress. And a Democrat SOTU speech would not be complete without an attack on the oil industry. But for the Obama administration’s anti-energy production policies, the oil industry would, in fact, be exploring and drilling more within and around our shores, thereby increasing supply and driving down price. Still, Obama says the government shouldn’t be subsidizing these companies with tax breaks. No, direct taxpayer subsidies are to be reserved for GE, GM, Chrysler, Wall Street, Fannie Mae, Freddie Mac, and other favored businesses or quasi-businesses.

Obama said that it is time to put party labels aside and work for the nation. Within 12 hours of that statement, he hit the road to begin his re-election and raise an astounding $1 billion in campaign cash. I guess he meant for everyone else to put partisan politics aside. After all, history calls him.

We conservatives must stay focused. We must defeat Obama in 2012 by nominating an intelligent, articulate, confident conservative for president. We must keep a close eye on the Republican leadership in Congress to make sure it does not return to its loser ways. Keep in mind; they are not of the Tea Party movement, although they’ve benefited politically from it. We must continue to take on the Left (including the mainstream media) both intellectually and politically. And we must send more conservatives to Congress. Our focus must be victory and we must not be distracted by the symbolism, games, ways, and intimidation tactics of those who’ve brought this great nation to this perilous point.

    John Stossel
My State of the Union Address

Email John Stossel | Columnist's Archive

President Obama fulfilled his constitutional duty and gave his report on the state of the union last night. Here's mine:

    We're in deep trouble.

You know why. Our debt has passed $14 trillion, and yet our current spending plans will make that worse. The U.S. debt will reach Greek levels in just 10 years.

But do not despair. If we make reasonable cuts to what government spends, our economy can grow us out of our debt. Cutting doesn't just make economic sense, it is also the moral thing to do. Henry David Thoreau had it right when he "accepted(ed) the motto ... that government is best which governs least."

So what should we get rid of?

We start by closing the Department of Education, which saves $100 billion a year. Education ought to be in the free market. It's insane to take money from states only to launder it through Washington and then return it to states.

Next, we should close the Department of Housing and Urban Development: $41 billion. We had plenty of housing in America before a department was created. Let's get government out of that business.

Then we eliminate the Commerce Department: $9 billion. A government that can't count the votes accurately should not try to negotiate trade.

Trade should be free. Free trade creates prosperity. And since trade should be free, we should eliminate all corporate welfare and all subsidies. That means: agriculture subsidies, green energy subsidies, ethanol subsidies and subsidies for public broadcasting. None of these is needed.

I propose selling Amtrak. Taxpayers will save money, and riders will get better service. Why is government in the transportation business? Let's have private companies compete to run the trains.

And we must finally stop one of the biggest assaults on freedom and our pocketbook, the war on drugs. The drug war is really a war on our own people. The ends do not justify the means.

Now the biggest cuts. Republicans propose to cut discretionary nonmilitary spending. Good. But why stop there? That's only 15 percent of our budget. We must cut more. That means cutting Medicare, Social Security and the military.

I know. Medicare and Social Security are popular, but they are unsustainable. We must privatize Social Security and slowly replace Medicare with vouchers.

And that brings me to Obamacare. The only way to cut costs and still have medical innovation is to free the market. So I propose that we repeal Obamacare immediately. Then we must do more: We must repeal all government interference in the medical and insurance industries, including licensing. All that impedes competition.

Now, military spending. Do you recall what candidate Obama said about the war in Iraq?

"I will bring this war to an end in 2009. So don't be confused."

But I am confused. We're two years past 2009, but we still have 48,000 troops in Iraq. We must shrink the military's mission to truly national defense. That means pulling our troops out of Germany, Japan, Italy and dozens of other countries. America cannot and should not try to police the entire world. We can't afford it, and it's not right.

Those cuts will put America on the road to solvency. But that's not enough. We also need economic growth.

Our growth has stalled because millions of pages of regulations make businesses too fearful to invest. Entrepreneurs don't know what the rules -- or taxes -- will be tomorrow. This discourages hiring.

All destructive laws must go. I again propose the Stossel Rule: For every new law passed, we must repeal two old ones.

We need to progress to an America that cherishes individual freedom.

That means a government limited by the Constitution, one that protects our shores and our persons but otherwise stays out of our way. We should take seriously the words of another president, Thomas Jefferson, and embrace "a wise and frugal government, which shall leave men free to regulate their own pursuits of industry and improvement, and shall not take from the mouth of labor the bread it has earned -- this is the sum of good government."

That's my State of the Union address.

    Ryan warns of ‘tipping point’

“Americans are skeptical of both political parties, and that skepticism is justified — especially when it comes to spending. So hold us accountable,” said Rep. Paul D. Ryan, Wisconsin Republican, in prepared remarks released before President Obama addressed lawmakers Tuesday evening. (Associated Press)

Acknowledging the public has a right to be angry at both parties, Republican leaders responding to President Obama‘s State of the Union speech implored Americans to trust them to lead the country out of its economic malaise.

Rep. Paul D. Ryan, the Wisconsin Republican chosen to give the party’s official response, said both sides face a “tipping point” in addressing the problems of federal spending and ballooning national debt.

“Americans are skeptical of both political parties, and that skepticism is justified - especially when it comes to spending. So hold us accountable,” said Mr. Ryan in a televised GOP rebuttal shortly after Mr. Obama‘s State of the Union address to a joint session of Congress on Tuesday evening.

Mr. Ryan, the new chairman of the House Budget Committee seen as one of the GOP‘s rising stars, vowed to draft a federal budget that gives Americans “a better choice and a different vision” - one that features significant spending cuts and results in a reduced debt and more jobs.

“Our forthcoming budget is our obligation to you - to show you how we intend to do things differently,” said Mr. Ryan, speaking from the House Budget Committee‘s main hearing room.

Rep. Michele Bachmann independently scheduled her own GOP response. In prepared remarks released to the press, she charged that Mr. Obama has ushered in an “unprecedented explosion of government spending and debt … unlike anything we have seen in the history of our country.” (Associated Press)

Mr. Ryan noted that House Republicans already this year have passed legislation that he said would slash spending, including bills to cut Congress‘ own budget and a repeal of the Democrat’s 2010 health care law. But many if not most GOP spending cut proposals, however, likely will die in the Democrat-dominated Senate.

“No economy can sustain such high levels of debt and taxation,” he said. “The next generation will inherit a stagnant economy and a diminished country.”

The Wisconsin lawmaker warned that if government’s growth “is left unchecked and unchallenged, America’s best century will be considered our past century.”

“Our nation is approaching a tipping point,” he said.

As President Obama did, Mr. Ryan expressed concern for Democratic Rep. Gabrielle Giffords, who was seriously injured in a gun attack in her Arizona district this month that killed six and wounded more than a dozen.

But in a discordant note for Republican leaders eager to show a unified response to Mr. Obama‘s arguments, Rep. Michele Bachmann, Minnesota Republican and a favorite of the anti-spending tea party movement, independently offered her own GOP response. The speech was conceived as a webcast for tea party activists, but was broadcast live on CNN.

Mrs. Bachmann insisted her rebuttal, which followed Mr. Ryan‘s response, was designed to complement - not compete with - the Wisconsin lawmaker’s words. But some Republicans privately worried the move could distract from their official response and give an impression that the tea party movement was taking over the party.

Mrs. Bachmann charged that Mr. Obama has ushered in an “unprecedented explosion of government spending and debt, unlike anything we have seen in the history of our country.”

The outspoken Minnesota lawmaker, citing last week’s House vote to repeal Mr. Obama‘s health care law shows that “we are in the early days of a history-making turn.”

Congressional Democrats were only too happy to highlight the competing rebuttals, passing around press clippings showing the cool reception top GOP leaders were giving to Mrs. Bachmann‘s speech.

“We all miss Gabby and her cheerful spirit; and we are praying for her return to the House chamber,” he said.

Republican leaders spent much of the day pre-emptively challenging Mr. Obama‘s address and his call for targeted federal “investments,” accusing the administration of failing to rein in spending.

Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, Kentucky Republican, said he was encouraged by the president’s recent “tones of a moderate” and his expressed willingness to work with the GOP, but quickly added that “it takes more than a change in tone to improve the economy.”

“Time and time again, the president has spoken in a way that appeals to many, then governed in a way that doesn’t,” Mr. McConnell said.

“Speeches only last for as long as they’re delivered,” he said.

“Americans are more interested in what follows the speech. And in the case of this administration, Americans have good reason to be skeptical.”

New GOP House Speaker John A. Boehner, Ohio Republican, said one central plank of Mr. Obama‘s address - a call for a freeze on the operating budgets of most domestic agencies - fell far short of what was needed.

“At a time when the Treasury secretary is begging Congress to raise the debt limit, a ‘freeze’ is simply inadequate,” Mr. Boehner said.

Obama's State of the Union Was Tantamount to Plagiarism
    January 26, 2011

If imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, what can be said of plagiarism? President Obama’s second State of the Union address contained enough recycled ideas and lines lifted from speeches of others to make historians wince. I suppose this is what one does when one not only has nothing new to say, but is required by custom and Constitution to come forth with a report of some kind by a certain time and day.

Had Obama or his writers been considerate enough to have informed listeners of where some of the president’s best lines and offered-up ideas originated, the speech might be remembered for its cutting and pasting of great and not-so-great moments of the past performance of others. After quoting Robert Kennedy early on, Obama tried to have his listeners believe that everything else he said that we might remember were his or his writers’ creations. Had the president submitted the text of his second State of the Union Address in the form of a college term paper, he would have been sent forthwith to the nearest academic dean. Once again, our public affairs are such that we have one standard for presidents and another for undergraduates. Now is as good a time as any to let Obama’s listeners in on what the late Paul Harvey would have termed “the rest of the story.”

Early in his address, Obama said that he wanted the nation he leads to be a "light to the world." The last president who set such a mission for the nation he led, and in those exact words, was Woodrow Wilson.

Obama’s concept of the “American family” may well have had its origins in the first State of the State address New York Governor Mario Cuomo delivered in 1983. Cuomo proclaimed the state of New York as a “family.” He also talked about multiple partnerships, both public and private.

In a 1991 Washington, D.C. address sponsored by conservative groups, including the Heritage Foundation, Margaret Thatcher coined a phrase Obama made his own in his second State of the Union address. Thatcher told her American audience that "no other nation has been built upon an idea." In a slightly revised form, Obama, in his second State of the Union address, all but repeated it, using additional words.

Obama’s pointed mutterings about a second “Sputnik Moment” being upon us and his recollection of how American policymakers responded to the last one with increased expenditures on infrastructure, science, technology, and education were clearly intended to evoke the spirit of Dwight D. Eisenhower. His setting of specific deadlines and goals was vintage JFK, but for the absence of any sense of challenge to his audience, list of benefits the United States would derive from them, or any semblance of a shared adventure the American people were about to embark upon. [Read Robert Schlesinger: Obama Not the First to Use 'Sputnik Moment.']

There was a certain Back to the Future feel to the masterful tributes Obama paid those Ronald Reagan might have described as “ordinary heroes.” After all, it was Reagan who began the practice of inviting citizens who had done extraordinary things to sit beside the first lady in the House gallery as the president recited their achievements. It was also Reagan who reminded his listeners that the greatness of America emerged not from the hand of government, but through the entrepreneurial spirit of the American people.

Obama received his most sustained applause when he said, "I know there isn’t a person here who would trade places with any other nation on Earth." Leaving aside the faulty grammar (people change places with people, not with nations), the poaching from John F. Kennedy's immortal inaugural address was obvious enough for the most historical of Obama's listeners to notice. ("I do not believe that any of us would exchange places with any other people or any other generation.") That Obama could utter almost identical words days after paying tribute to Kennedy on the 50th anniversary of the delivery of that famous speech and not making reference to it suggests a self-absorption rare even among presidents.

Most pointedly, the low point of Obama’s speech came when he brought back government re-organization from the ash heap of failed efforts of previous presidents who sought to save money without inflicting pain on a public that had grown accustomed to government largesse. This one, like all that talk about all those green energy jobs that lay before us, had fallen out of the presidential repertoire with retirement of Jimmy Carter. Obama might have had the decency to have Carter on hand to witness the moment. He will have another chance should he, when he delivers his budget, bring back that other Carter flop from yesteryear, “zero based budgeting.”

Even Obama’s feigned attempt at humor had an antecedent in the remarks of a predecessor who spun better yarns than this president. Obama informed his listeners that salmon comes under the jurisdiction of one department when swimming in fresh water and under another when swimming in salt water. He rhetorically inquired what happened to the fish when “smoked.”

Somewhere in the White House library resides a published letter Franklin Roosevelt wrote to an adviser in which he complained that some bears were the property of the Interior Department, while others belonged the National Parks System. FDR, tongue in cheek, warned of a pending custody battle over cubs that emerged from illicit unions of bears crossing departmental jurisdictions.

It would appear that the only president of note whose imprint was absent in Obama’s long awaited and much-anticipated speech was Obama. This was supposed to have been the moment when the nation found out whether he was at the core a Rooseveltian liberal of a Clintonian centrist. What it got was a cut and pasted version of great and not-so-great State of the Union and other addresses of the past.

Sometime last year, many suggested that Obama would have an easier time getting his message across if he was less dependent on his teleprompter. This may be the year his writers are advised to throw away their books of political quotations. Then we may finally find out what the president truly believes and what he hopes to achieve in the office he so ardently sought.
