Arab allies of US skittish in wake of Egypt unrest

For other US-backed Arab states, events in Egypt are seen as "tragic."

RIYADH, Saudi Arabia — There is little doubt about how Saudi Arabia’s King Abdullah bin Abdul Aziz views the historic developments unfolding in Egypt.

The monarch, who is in Morocco recuperating from back surgery, called Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak to express his support on Saturday. And then, speaking to U.S. President Barack Obama on the phone, he declared that there could be “no compromise” on Egypt’s stability and security, the official Saudi news agency reported.

The agency went on to say that “the tragic events” in Egypt were marked by “chaos, looting, intimidation of innocents, exploitation of freedom and expression and attempts to ignite the flames of chaos to achieve their suspicious goals … not approved by Saudi-U.S. sides.”

The king’s stance is markedly different from that of his subjects, some of whom have said they are “happy” and “proud” of the Egyptians. Like Arabs across the region, many say they are rooting for the protesters who have filled Cairo’s Liberation Square day after day to demand Mubarak’s ouster.

The king is “clearly misreading Saudi public opinion,” said Gerd Nonneman, professor of international relations at Exeter University. But it’s not surprising given that he and Mubarak “have had a long history together.”

The two men — both in their 80s — have been partners in maintaining a pro-U.S. Arab regional order for decades. Together, they compose the two most influential and important leaders of what is sometimes called the “moderate” bloc of Arab states.

These states, which also include Jordan and Saudi Arabia’s Gulf neighbors, are willing to negotiate and make peace with Israel — Egypt, in fact, already has a peace treaty with the Jewish state. They support the secular-oriented Palestinian Authority rather than the religiously based Hamas. And even when they vigorously disagree with U.S. policies — such as the 2003 invasion of Iraq — they do nothing to obstruct them.

This predominantly Sunni bloc, which until recently also included Tunisia, is also a key asset in Washington’s drawn-out campaign to stop Shiite Iran’s hegemonic attempts to spread its influence in the Arab arena.

But now, the potential for a recasting of Egyptian domestic politics toward a more democratic and popularly-based government, raises the possibility of a change in Cairo’s role as a fervent standard-bearer for U.S. policies in the region.

They are policies that are deeply unpopular in the Arab world. “The closer you are to American policies and the more tolerant you are of Israeli policies in the region, the more you are considered ‘moderate,’’ said Fares Braizat of the Qatar-based Arab Center for Research and Policy Studies, explaining what it means to be among the “moderate” bloc of Arab countries.

“These regimes are aware that they serve U.S. and Israeli interests more than they serve the interests of their own people. This is why the regimes are frightened,” Braizat added. “They have not recognized that they have failed to deliver jobs, and opportunities and above all political freedom.”

If Egypt were to have a government that puts “the interests of its own people before the interests of Israel and the United States,” Braizat said, “this would help those who want their states to stop being satellite states to Israel and Washington.”

Several analysts, however, said they do not foresee a major shift in Egypt’s foreign policy no matter how the current crisis is resolved, and no matter who ends up ruling the country — for one simple reason: The Egyptian military is, and will remain, the ultimate power in Egypt.

“And the military is clearly Washington-friendly,” said Saudi columnist Hussein Shobokshi.

“You have to differentiate between the regime and the president,” he added. “The military has a lot of say and a lot of control … they would sacrifice the president to preserve the regime.”

Augustus R. Norton, professor of international relations at Boston University, said, “it is impossible to envision a transition that does not involve the Egyptian military.”

As a result, Norton added, “I don’t think you’ll see an Egyptian government emerging that is too unlike the past in the way they handle relations with the West.”

Nonneman, of Exeter University, agreed. “It’s not all that likely that Egypt will turn radical in any way,” he said. He called predictions that Islamists might dominate a new Cairo government “massively overblown.”

“The only thing which can push a more radical, anti-Western agenda would be Western policies and statements supporting [a continuation of] authoritarianism,” Nonneman added.

Still, Norton said there would likely be “a messy process of transition” ahead in Egypt and “months of negotiations” over a new political system. “That’s not going to be assuring to Saudis who have been comfortable with the status quo.”

It’s the “messy” part that discomfits King Abdullah and some of his subjects.

“We have seen what is happening in Iraq,” said Saudi journalist and TV talk show host Dawood Al Shirian. “Change should be gradual rather than what’s happening in Tunisia and Egypt … To change regimes through the street is very dangerous … The future is not clear.”

Saudi Arabia’s state news agency reported that King Abdullah bin Abdulaziz al-Saud criticized the protestors (claiming they are instigated by "infiltrators") and strongly backed Mubarak.

The king said protesters were "exploited to spew out their hatred in destruction . . . inciting a malicious sedition” and that outside agitators “infiltrated into the brotherly people of Egypt, to destabilize its security."

"No Arab or Muslim can tolerate any meddling in the security and stability of Arab and Muslim Egypt by those who infiltrated the people in the name of freedom of expression, exploiting it to inject their destructive hatred," King Abdullah was quoted as saying.

In addition, the king reportedly phoned Mubarak early Saturday and "reassured” him about the situation in Egypt.

Saudi Arabia and Egypt are widely viewed as “moderate” Arab states and have formed a key U.S.-supported alliance against the fundamentalist Iran.

While the unrest in Tunisia and Egypt has not yet seriously spilled over into other Muslim lands run by authoritarian regimes, rulers like the Saudi king are likely eager to prevent any such disturbances within their borders.

Meanwhile, Iranian officials, meanwhile, expressed their continued support on for the demonstrators in Egypt.

A spokesman for the Iranian Foreign Ministry said that Tehran expects Egypt to "respond to (protesters') rightful demands and refrain from exerting violence.”

Mubarak’s Going to Saudi Arabia, CIA-Backed Forecasters Say

Hosni Mubarak’s 30-year rule of Egypt is probably coming to an end, and that means he’ll likely leave Egypt right after he leaves power. (Dictators don’t usually stick around the countries they dictated.) So where would Mubarak flee? One data mining company, backed by the investment arms of Google and the CIA, has an educated guess.

Recorded Future scours tens of thousands of websites, blogs, and Twitter accounts to find the so-called “invisible links” between people, actions, and events. In this case, the company turned its tools on Mubarak’s travel patterns to find clues to his next moves. The guy isn’t exactly posting his post-regime plans on his Facebook wall. But, by looking at public documents about where Mubarak has been and who he hangs with, some likely destinations for his exile emerge.

“If you want to know where he’s going next,” says Recorded Future CEO Christopher Ahlberg, “you’ve got to know what he’s done in the past.”

The reasons why he travels matter, too. Mubarak flew both to Germany and France last year: once for cancer treatment, and a second time for suspected health reasons. It suggests that the 82 year-old leader would rather land in a country first first class medical facilities (at least for former strongmen). Some of Mubarak’s other destinations this year — like Libya, Sudan, and Algeria — don’t really fit that bill.
On the other hand, European countries — especially ones with large Arab minorities — might be a little skittish about taking such an unpopular figure. So Germany or France might not be the best choice for Mubarak’s retirement home.
Saudi Arabia is another frequent Mubarak destination. He was there in January, 2009, huddling with King Abdullah, and again in July, 2010, talking about the Lebanese political crisis. Mubarak and King Abdullah were supposed to meet again in November — although Abdullah called off the trip at the last minute, because of health issues.
A few days ago, the Saudi ruler blamed “intruders” for allegedly “tampering with Egypt’s security and stability… in the name of freedom of expression.” And earlier in the month, Saudi Arabia took in ousted Tunisian dictator Zine El Abidine Ben Ali. No wonder, then, that one chant in Egypt goes: “Hosni Mubarak, Hosni Mubarak, the plane is waiting, the plane is waiting. Saudi Arabia is not far!”
Recorded Future’s analysts believe that Saudi Arabia is Mubarak’s next destination, too.
The company attracted millions of dollars from Google Ventures and from In-Q-Tel, the investment arm of the U.S. intelligence community, based on the promise that it can forecast coming events automatically. The company’s scouring of present and past information is supposed to feed predictive algorithms, which offer likely future outcomes.
But in this case, “humans put it together. No predictive model. No data models,” Ahlberg says.
If that’s not a ringing endorsement of Recorded Future’s predictive powers, consider the performance of one potential competitor. An Air Force-funded firm, Milcord, used a statistical model to put together a list of the 37 countries most likely to see political violence by 2014. Egypt was ranked #36, just ahead of Belgium.

Monarch asks ex-army general to form new government in the wake of streets protests over prices and reforms.

King Abdullah II of Jordan has sacked his government in the wake of street protests and has asked an ex-army general to form a new cabinet, Jordan's Royal Palace has announced.

King Abdullah's move on Tuesday comes after thousands of Jordanians took to the streets, inspired by anti-government protests in Tunisia and Egypt. Jordanians had been calling for the resignation of prime minister Samir Rifai who is blamed for a rise in fuel and food prices and slowed political reforms.

A Jordanian official said the monarch officially accepted the resignation of Rifai, a wealthy politician and former court adviser, and asked Marouf Bakhit to form a new cabinet.
"[Bakhit] is a former general and briefly ambassador to Israel who has been prime minister before. He's someone who would be seen as a safe pair of hands," Rosemary Hollis, professor of Middle East policy studies at London's City University, said.
"I wouldn't see it as a sign of liberalisation. With his previous premiership, he talked the talk of reform but little actually happened," she said.
Protests have spread across Jordan in the last few weeks, with demonstrators blaming corruption spawned by free-market reforms for the plight of the country's poor.
Many Jordanians hold successive governments responsible for a prolonged recession and rising public debt that hit a record $15bn this year in one of the Arab world's smallest economies, heavily dependent on foreign aid.

Saudi Arabia evacuates 14,000 citizens from Egypt

(Ahlul Bayt News Agency) - The spokesman of Saudi Air Lines Abdullah al-Ajâ€™har as saying on Monday night, â€œFollowing the intensification of the public protests and the deterioration of the general situation in Egypt, the Saudi Government officials directed the Saudi citizens there to leave Egypt as soon as possible.â€

Saudi monarch, King Abdullah bin Abdul-Aziz earlier this week in a phone talk with his Egyptian embattled counterpart Hossni Mubarak while sympathizing with him, said that the ongoing developments in his country were destabilizing not only Egypt, but also the entire Middle East and beyond.

Unrest in Egypt continued into its 7th day as anti-government protests once again faced police on the streets of Cairo.

Egyptian police were back on the streets the capital city Monday after disappearing over the weekend, as thousands of protesters showed no sign of obeying a mid-afternoon government-imposed curfew.

Better correct Fox then. LOL I was quoting DIRECTLY from what someone said... "In Saudi Arabia, King Abulla sacked the cabinet" and fired some other adviser.

But thanks for the correction. Even so, the Saudi Government is having fits as well.

They are the last stable government sitting there.

(CNN) -- The king of Jordan dismissed his government Tuesday and appointed a new prime minister, a move which follows protests calling for political reform.
King Abdullah II asked Marouf Al Bakhit to form a government that will implement "genuine political reform," the Royal Court said in a statement.
The government will "take practical steps, quick and concrete, to launch a process of genuine political reform, comprehensive development, and take genuine steps towards strengthening democracy," among other tasks, according to Al Bakhit's letter of instruction, which was also released.
Last week, Islamists, leftists and union members marched in downtown Amman, demanding more significant economic and political reforms to help struggling citizens. Police estimated several thousand people gathered in the Jordanian capital for the event, although only about half of them demonstrated. There were protests in six other cities as well, authorities said.
