Egyptian standoff: Mubarak stays, army won't oust him and people stand fast

    DEBKAfile Special Report January 30, 2011, 11:20 PM (GMT+02:00)

The popular uprising against the Egyptian regime reached a standoff at the end of its sixth day, Sunday night, Jan. 30: President Hosni Mubarak made it clear to the armed forces chiefs whom he met at military headquarters during the day that he has no intention of bowing to the massive popular call to step down.

It is from there that operations to quell the uprising against his regime are being conducted.

Mubarak clearly had not intention of heeding the pressure from Washington and European capitals to listen to the people and their call for an orderly transition to "a democratic government responsive to the aspirations of the Egyptian people" – reiterated by President Barack Obama Sunday.

The generals then continued to pour divisions into Cairo and Egypt's main cities in an effort to assume control. However, this tactic is not working: The officers and men on the ground realize they and their tanks are extras in a show of strength to the cities without the power to exert it: they can't shoot the protesters or exercise any other form of violence.

In Cairo, for instance, vigilantes protecting private property in the suburbs handed looters over to the soldiers who passed them to the police. In Alexandria, Egyptian tank officers were seen directing traffic in the town center.

Against the regime, the opposition groups - of which there are at least ten - are just as hamstrung by their failure to produce a leader able to stand up and challenge the president. For lack of any representative figure, they picked the retired nuclear watchdog director Dr. Mohamed ElBaradi to speak for them in negotiations over the transfer of power.

Hardly anyone in Egypt knows him: He is better known outside the country having spent many years abroad.

debkafile's Middle East sources report that the Egyptian crisis looks like being in for a protracted period of uncertainty unless the army, which holds the key to breaking the deadlock, decided to step in and pick a side - Mubarak or the people. The generals alone have the clout to force Mubarak to step down and get out, as happened in Tunisia, or smash the street demonstrations. This would mean a massacre, the army's identification with a repressive regime and the end of its historic acceptance as the people's army.

It will be noted that the new Vice President Gen. Omar Suleiman, 76, is seen more as a loyalist of the president, whom he served as intelligence minster and strong arm, than the military.

He appears to be behind the steps ordered Sunday, such as sending Air Force fighter jets to swoop over Tahrir Square and building up a military presence in the main towns. None of these steps have broken the back of the uprising or intimidated the protesters. State TV announced accordinglty that the police would return to the streets Monday, two days after they were chased away by the protesters.

The curfew which has been consistently flouted is to be extended: From 1500 hours Monday, Jan. 31, no one will be allowed on town streets until the following morning.

"For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms."

U.S. Stock-Index Futures Decline on Concern Egypt Unrest May Slow Recovery
    By Joanna Ossinger - Jan 30, 2011 9:14 PM GMT-0200

U.S. stock-index futures fell, indicating the Standard & Poor’s 500 Index may extend the biggest decline since August, as investors speculated Egypt’s crisis will slow the global recovery.

Futures on the S&P 500 expiring in March fell 0.3 percent to 1,267.50 as of 8:13 a.m. in Tokyo. Dow Jones Industrial Average futures retreated 43 points, or 0.4 percent, to 11,732. Middle East shares sank yesterday, sending Abu Dhabi’s index down 3.7 percent, its biggest drop in 14 months.

“The situation in Egypt is the catalyst for a downturn,” said James Paulsen, chief investment strategist at Minneapolis- based Wells Capital Management, which oversees about $340 billion. “We have a market that is vulnerable to a technical correction. There’s an investor mindset that’s been expecting that to happen for a while now, given where the market is and how fast it’s come up.”

The S&P 500 has surged 22 percent since Federal Reserve Chairman Ben S. Bernanke said Aug. 27 that he was prepared to take action to help the economy. Stocks fell last week, preventing the longest stretch of weekly gains for the Dow average since 1995, as unrest in Egypt triggered the biggest one-day drop in the gauge since November and overshadowed higher-than-projected earnings at companies from Intel Corp. to DuPont Co.

    Demonstrations in Egypt

Demonstrations in Egypt continued over the weekend. Yesterday, President Hosni Mubarak met with top military commanders as tens of thousands of protesters defied a curfew and gathered in central Cairo, chanting slogans against the new prime minister and vice president he appointed Jan. 29.

The Bloomberg GCC 200 Index comprising Saudi Arabia, Qatar, the U.A.E., Oman, Bahrain and Kuwait lost 0.3 percent. Egypt’s market was closed today after sliding 16 percent last week. It will remain shut tomorrow.

The Dow was set for its longest weekly streak of gains since 1995 until Jan. 28, when the index slumped 1.4 percent after Mubarak implemented a curfew in Cairo, Suez and Alexandria and fighting between police and protesters broke out. The S&P 500 dropped 1.8 percent, the most since Aug. 11, with earnings reports from Ford Motor Co. and Amazon.com Inc. helping pull stocks lower.

Overall, companies in the S&P 500 also continued to post better-than-estimated profits this season, with 136 of the 183 companies that have reported so far, or 74 percent, beating projections. Technology companies have exceeded forecasts by 16 percent, the highest of any other industry. A group of computer and software stocks advanced 0.6 percent last week, the third- best of 10 industries in the S&P 500.

    U.S. GDP

Concern Egypt’s unrest will hinder oil exports through the Suez Canal overshadowed a report showing the U.S. economy expanded 3.2 percent in the fourth quarter. Household purchases, about 70 percent of the economy, rose at a 4.4 percent pace, the most since the first quarter of 2006, signaling the world’s largest economy and consumers are recovering from the worst recession since World War II. New-home purchases in the U.S. also rose more than forecast last month, Commerce Department figures showed last week.

Technical indicators suggested that stocks are poised for a pullback. More than 80 percent of stocks traded above their 200- day moving average last week, according to Birinyi Associates Inc. The last time that many were so high was in April, before the S&P 500 began a decline in which it lost as much as 16 percent. A measure of the degree to which S&P 500 gains outpace losses, known as the relative strength index, jumped to 71.8 this week. The RSI exceeded 70 for five straight days through April 15, before the S&P 500 peaked.

ElBaradei: No going back in Egypt
Nobel laureate tells defiant Cairo crowd that he has a mandate to negotiate with Mubarak government.
    Last Modified: 30 Jan 2011 19:01 GMT

Mohamed ElBaradei, a leading opposition figure, has joined thousands of protesters in Cairo's Tahrir Square, in continued demonstrations demanding an end to President Hosni Mubarak's 30-year rule.

The former head of the International Atomic Energy Agency told the crowd on Sunday night that "what we have begun cannot go back" referring to days of anti-government protests.

The National Coalition for Change, which groups several opposition movements including the Muslim Brotherhood, wants ElBaradei to negotiate with the Mubarak government.

"The people want the regime to fall," protesters chanted as ElBaradei walked to the centre of the square, holding hands with some demonstrators.

The show of continued defiance by the people came on a day when air force fighter planes flew low over Cairo along with helicopters and extra troop lorries appeared in the central square.

As the protests continue, security is said to be deteriorating and reports have emerged of several prisons across the country being attacked and of fresh protests being staged in cities like Alexandria and Suez.

Thirty-four leaders from the Muslim Brotherhood were freed from the Wadi Natroun jail after guards abandoned their posts.

The protesters in Cairo, joined by hundreds of judges, had collected again in Tahrir Square in the afternoon to demand the resignation of Hosni Mubarak.

Al Jazeera's correspondent, reporting from the scene, said that demonstrators confronted a fire truck, at which point army troops fired into the air in a bid to disperse them.

He said the protesters did not move back, and a tank commander then ordered the fire truck to leave. When the truck moved away from the square, the thousands of protesters erupted into applause and climbed onto the tank in celebration, hugging soldiers.

Main roads in Cairo have been blocked by military tanks and armoured personnel carriers, and large numbers of army personnel have been seen in other cities as well.

Reporting from Cairo earlier on Sunday, an Al Jazeera correspondent said it was a "long way from business as usual" in the Egyptian capital on the first working day since protests peaked on Friday.

He said that extra military roadblocks had been set up in an apparent attempt to divert traffic away from Tahrir Square, which has become a focal point for demonstrators.

"It's still a very tense scene to have so much military in the capital city of the country."

Earlier in the morning, another correspondent reported that the city appeared deserted in the early hours.

"The streets are very dirty, there is debris everywhere. The police have just disappeared. Any security at this stage is in the hands of the army."

Al Jazeera's correspondents in the port city of Alexandria have also said that anti-government protests have begun there, with hundreds of people on the streets.

    Security situation

The security situation in the capital prompted the country's interior minister to hold meetings with top officials on Sunday.

Habib al Adli met Mohamed Hussein Tantawi, the defence minister, and vice president Omar Soliman, state television reported.

As the police withdrew from streets across Egypt, Adli has been the target of growing criticism by the protesters who have called on him to resign.

The absence of police has given looters a free rein, forcing ordinary citizens to set up neighbourhood patrols.

However, police are expected to return to the streets two days after they viirtually disappeared.

Sources told Reuters news agency that police would return to traffic, criminal and other duties but would not be sent in to confront protesters, with whom they often clashed violently in the first days of the protests. The army were ordered in on Friday.

According to Dina Magdi, an eyewitness, unidentified men on Sunday morning came out of the interior ministry compound in a car and dumped a body on a street. They then opened fire on people present in the area and fled. There were no immediate reports of casualties in that attack.

Al Jazeera's sources have indicated that the military has now also been deployed to the resort town of Sharm el Shaikh.

Sherine Tadros, Al Jazeera's correspondent in the city of Suez, said the city had witnessed a "completely chaotic night", but that the streets were quiet as day broke.

She reported that in the absence of police and military, people were "tak[ing] the law into their own hands", using "clubs, batons, sticks, machetes [and] knives" to protect their property.

"People are trying to get back to normal, but of course this is anything but," she said, adding that as the day wore on, the military had set up several checkposts in an attempt to "show people that they are here and ... will provide some kind of security".

Rawya Rageh, our correspondent in Alexandria, reported similar scenes, saying that people were particularly concerned about their personal safety and that of their property.

She reported that the military in Alexandria was not focusing on protesters, attempting instead to prevent any further damage or theft of property.

Anti-Mubarak protests have engulfed Middle East's most populous nation since last Tuesday. More than 150 people have been killed in the unrest.

On Saturday, an embattled Mubarak sacked his cabinet and appointed a vice-president and a new prime minister. But the move has failed to douse anger on the streets

As international powers express concern regarding events in Egypt, the US state department has reduced its diplomatic presence in Egypt, saying it had authorised the voluntary departure of dependents of diplomats and non-essential workers.

Egypt in crisis, Mubarak meets commanders
    Sun Jan 30, 2011 1:08pm GMT
By Shaimaa Fayed and Yasmine Saleh

CAIRO (Reuters) - President Hosni Mubarak, clinging to power despite unprecedented demands for an end to his 30-year rule, met on Sunday with the powerful military which is widely seen as holding the key to Egypt's future.

Mubarak held talks with Vice President Omar Suleiman, whose appointment on Saturday has possibly set the scene for a transition in power, Defence Minister Mohamed Hussein Tantawi, Chief of Staff Sami al-Anan and other senior commanders.

An earthquake of unrest is shaking Mubarak's authoritarian grip on power and the high command's support is vital as other pillars of his ruling apparatus crumble, analysts said.

Egyptians faced lawlessness on their streets on Sunday with security forces and ordinary people trying to stop looters after five days of popular protest.

Through the night, Cairo residents armed with clubs, chains and knives formed vigilante groups to guard neighbourhoods from marauders after the unpopular police force withdrew following clashes with protesters that left more than 100 dead.

The capital's streets were mostly deserted, with the army guarding the Interior Ministry, and citizens putting their trust in the military, hoping they would restore order but not open fire to keep key U.S. ally Mubarak, 82, in power.

Amidst a heavy military presence, up to 4,000 people gathered in Tahrir Square, which has become a rallying point to express anger at poverty, repression and corruption in the Arab world's most populous nation.

"Hosni Mubarak, Omar Suleiman, both of you are agents of the Americans," shouted protesters, referring to the appointment of intelligence chief Suleiman as vice president, the first time Mubarak has appointed a deputy in 30 years of office.

It was the position Mubarak held before he become president and many saw the appointment as ending his son Gamal's long-predicted ambitions to take over.

"Mubarak, Mubarak, the plane awaits," demonstrators said.

Sunday is normally a working day in Egypt but banks and financial markets were shut. The bourse and the central bank said they would stay closed on Monday.

The unprecedented turmoil has sent shock waves through the Middle East, where other autocratic rulers may face similar challenges, and unsettled financial markets around the globe.

    ARMY KEY TO EGYPT'S FUTURE

The protests bore many hallmarks of the unrest that toppled the leader of Tunisia two weeks ago, although the arrival of army troops to replace the police showed that Mubarak still has the support of the military, the country's most powerful force.

So far, the protest movement seems to have no clear leader or organisation even if Mubarak did wish to open a dialogue.

Prominent activist Mohamed ElBaradei, a Nobel Peace Laureate for his work with the U.N. nuclear agency, returned to Egypt from Europe to join the protests. But many Egyptians feel he has not spent enough time in the country.

The Muslim Brotherhood, an Islamist opposition group, has also stayed in the background, although several of its senior officials have been rounded up. The government has accused it of planning to exploit the protests.

Thirty-four members of the Brotherhood, including seven of its leaders, walked out of prison on Sunday after relatives of prisoners overcame the guards, a Brotherhood official said.

The relatives stormed the prison in Wadi el-Natroun, 120 km (80 miles) northwest of Cairo, and set free several thousand of the inmates, Brotherhood office manager Mohamed Osama told Reuters. No one was hurt, he added.

Army tanks and tracked vehicles stood at the capital's street corners, guarding banks as well as government offices and the Interior Ministry headquarters. State security fought with protesters trying to attack the building on Saturday night.

The tumult was effecting Egypt's tourist industry and the United States and Turkey said they were offering evacuation flights for citizens anxious to leave. Other governments advised their citizens to leave Egypt or to avoid travelling there.

Cairo airport was jammed with passengers eager to get out of the troubled country.

Egypt said it had shut down the operations of satellite broadcaster Al Jazeera which has shown footage of the demonstrations taking place in Cairo, Suez and Alexandria and heavy-handed police tactics to the rest of the Arab world.

The government has interfered with Internet access and mobile phone signals to try and disrupt demonstrators' plans. Twitter messages on Sunday were urging Egyptians to assemble at Tahrir Square to resume their anti-Mubarak message.

The United States and European powers were busy reworking their Middle East policies, which have supported Mubarak, turning a blind eye to police brutality and corruption in return for a bulwark against first communism and now militant Islam.

In Cairo, the biggest immediate fear was of looting as public order collapsed. Mobs stormed banks, supermarkets, jewellery shops and government offices. Some suggested the chaos could herald a security forces crackdown.

In surreal scenes, soldiers from Mubarak's army stood by tanks covered in anti-Mubarak graffiti: "Down with Mubarak. Down with the despot. Down with the traitor. Pharaoh out of Egypt."

Asked how they could let protesters write anti-Mubarak slogans on their vehicles, one soldier said: "These are written by the people, it's the views of the people."

Residents expressed hope the troops would restore order. "People are terrified from these outlaws on the streets looting, attacking and destroying," said Salah Khalife, an employee at a sugar company.

"This is the Arab world's Berlin moment," said Fawaz Gerges of the London School of Economics, comparing the events to the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989. "The authoritarian wall has fallen, and that's regardless of whether Mubarak survives."

Egypt fighter planes buzz Cairo protesters

    CAIRO | Sun Jan 30, 2011 9:26am EST

CAIRO (Reuters) - Egyptian air force fighter planes buzzed low over Cairo on Sunday, helicopters hovered above and extra troop trucks appeared in a central square where protesters were demanding an end to President Hosni Mubarak's rule.

It was the latest show of military might on Sunday in an apparent effort to send protesters back to their homes before a curfew. Mubarak held talks with top military commanders earlier in the day, state media reported.

A Reuters witness saw at least three jets fly over Tahrir Square. The warplanes flew over the city several times. At least a dozen troop trucks and extra tanks drove toward the square as more protesters gathered in defiance of the curfew.

Tanks have been posted in the square since Friday when the army was sent to the streets to take control after days of unrest and anti-government demonstrations.

"The planes are out there to scare the people. It's time for the curfew and no one is going home," a 45-year-old engineer who was protesting in the main Tahrir square said. "It's clear to me that the army is here to protect Mubarak."

Earlier in the day, Mubarak met newly appointed Vice President Omar Suleiman, Defense Minister Mohamed Hussein Tantawi, Chief of Staff Sami al-Anan and other commanders at a military headquarters. When the fighter planes flew overhead, some shouted "Long live the army." Others in Tahrir shouted: "We will not go, he will go, Hosni is going mad."

The Defense minister was shown on state television reviewing army units based outside the state broadcasting building.

"Egypt depends on you now," Tantawi said to one soldier, patting him on the shoulders.

Egypt: President's son and family 'have fled to the UK'

ultimo aggiornamento: 25 gennaio, ore 19:35
Gamal Mubarak, Egyptian president Hosni Mubarak's son who is widely tipped as his successor, has fled to London with his family, Arabic website Akhbar al-Arab said on Tuesday.

Cairo, 25 Jan. (AKI) - Gamal Mubarak, Egyptian president Hosni Mubarak's son who is widely tipped as his successor, has fled to London with his family, Arabic website Akhbar al-Arab said on Tuesday. The report came as violent unrest broke out in Cairo and other Egyptian cities and hundreds of thousands of people reportedly took to the streets in a Tunisia-inspired day of revolt.

Officials did not immediately confirm the report that Gamal Mubarak has fled to the British capital with his wife and daughter aboard a private jet.

The jet with Mubarak, his family and 97 pieces of luggage on board left for London on Tuesday from an airport in western Cairo, according to the US-based Akhbar al-Arab.

Weeks of unrest in Tunisia eventually toppled president Zine al-Abidine Ben Ali earlier this month. The anti-government protests in Egypt broke out after opposition groups waged an internet campaign inspired by the Tunisian uprising.

An anti-riot police officer was killed in clashes on Tuesday in central Cairo, Egyptian daily 'al-Wafd' reported. Egyptian security forces reported used tear gas, fire hoses, and clubs to disperse protesters in Tahrir Square, downtown Cairo.

Over 30,000 anti-government protesters had gathered. in Cairo's Maidan al-Tahrir square to take part in the 'day of anger', the spokesman for Egypt's '6 April' opposition movement, Mohammed Adel, told Adnkronos International (AKI) in an interview.

"Police used tear gas and water canon to break up our protest and they arrested 40 of us, but we don't have official figures on the numbers of arrests across Egypt," said Adel.

Supporters of the '6 April' movement, the opposition al-Ghad party, the outlawed Muslim Brotherhood, the al-Wafd party and supporters of former UN nuclear watchdog chief Mohammed El Baradei took part in the protest.

The protesters want Egypt to end its 30-year state of emergency and pass a law preventing a president from serving more than two terms, and want the interior minister Habib al-Adly, to resign.

Al-Wafd daily said police arrested 600 people during Tuesday's protests in Cairo, Alexandria, Port Said, Tantan, al-Mahala, Asiut, al-Bahira and al-Quium.

Between 200,000 and 300,000 people took part in protests in these cities on Tuesday, according to the Rasad al-Ikhbari observatory, which is staffed by journalists and opposition activists.

Police set dogs on protesters in Port Said and charged protesters in Suez and al-Mahala, an unnamed activist from Rasad al-Ikhbari told AKI.

Protests are rare in Egypt, where Mubarak tolerates little dissent.

US secretary of state Hillary Clinton said on Tuesday Washington believed the Egyptian government was stable and urged restraint on both sides.

As Clinton Calls for 'Orderly Transition' in Egypt, Mubarak's Time Appears Limited

    Published January 30, 2011
    | FoxNews.com

    AP
Sunday: Some of the thousands of Egyptian protesters shout anti-Mubarak slogans during a protest in Cairo, Egypt. The army sent hundreds more troops and armored vehicles onto the streets of Cairo and other cities but appeared to be taking little action against mass protests.

Reflecting a growing acknowledgment that the Egyptian leader's days as president are numbered, a high-ranking Egyptian diplomat on Sunday echoed U.S. calls in recent days, saying the primary goal of Hosni Mubarak's regime at this point is an "orderly transition" of power.

It's a phrase used repeatedly by the Obama administration in the past week.

"We want to see an orderly transition so that no one fills a void, that there not be a void, that there be a well thought-out plan that will bring about a democratic, participatory government," Secretary of State Hillary Clinton told "Fox News Sunday." "I also believe strongly that this is in Egypt's long-term interest, it is in the interest of the partnership that the United States has with Egypt so that is what we are attempting to promote and support."

The U.S. is "sending a very clear message" about an "orderly transition," Clinton added. Such quick movement is needed to avoid "some takeover that would lead not to democracy, but to oppression and the end of aspirations of the Egyptian people."

As protests grow in capital Cairo and other Egyptian cities, many are looking at the end of the autocrat's 30-year reign and whether it will come softly or harshly; immediately as a result of turmoil in the streets or a few months down the line through an "orderly," even voluntary, process.

The diplomatic source, speaking to Fox News, said it is possible Mubarak could be driven from office, or the country, by street rioting, but the Egyptian president still maintains "normal" command over the military and the armed forces are executing all missions assigned them.

A swift announcement by Mubarak that he intends to step down after free and open presidential elections already scheduled for this September would allow the president to finish out his term and avoid prosecution by a subsequent Egyptian government.

It appears to be something the Obama administration may have already discussed with Mubarak in recent days.

"There is an action-enforcing event that is already on the calendar. Can there be efforts made to really respond to the political desires of the people so that such an election is free and fair and credible? There are many steps that can be taken," Secretary of State Hillary Clinton told CNN's "State of the Union" on Sunday.

Acknowledging Mubarak's role in securing peace regionally over the past 30 years he has been in power, the secretary of state said for three decades Egypt's president has promised but not delivered reform in his own country. She said the time has come to respond to the Egyptian people's "legitimate grievances."

"For 30 years, the United States, Republican and Democratic administrations, have been urging Mubarak to take certain steps. In fact, we have been urging that a vice president be appointed for decades, and that finally has happened, but there's a long way to go," Clinton told Fox News.

"We see a dialogue opening that reflects the full diversity of Egyptian civil society that has the concrete steps for democratic and economic reform that Mubarak himself said that he was going to pursue," she added.

Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky, who for years has also urged democratization of Egypt, said he is hopeful a power shift there will end with an ongoing ally.

"A lot of us felt that had he moved on some of these issues, we'd have had a much smoother transition than we're witnessing now," McConnell said on NBC's "Meet the Press." "Hopefully this transition will occur relatively peacefully. And at the end of it all, I hope we still have an important ally in the Middle East."

In Cairo, a Mubarak-imposed 4 p.m. curfew Sunday was reinforced with low-flying fighter jets meant to demonstrate the military's control over the city.

A central square where thousands of protesters were calling for Mubarak's departure was filled with the presence of army troops backed by tanks.

Police also returned to the streets after nearly two days of absences that contributed to gangs of armed men freeing thousands of militants and other inmates from four jails, the burning of the ruling political party's offices and smashed ATMs, cars and other property.

Though publicly understated, the Obama administration response has been ongoing. Sunday morning, Deputy National Security Adviser Denis McDonough chaired a deputies committee meeting to discuss the situation in Egypt. Later in the day, President Obama, who took his daughters to play basketball in the morning, received a briefing from members of his national security staff.

He also has been calling foreign leaders over the weekend, expressing the U.S. position and seeking input from European and Middle Eastern officials.

The White House says that Obama has spoken with leaders from the United Kingdom, Turkey, Israel and Saudi Arabia.

For its own citizens, the U.S. State Department authorized "voluntary departures" in which the U.S. Embassy in Cairo will assist Americans seeking to leave the country.

Roughly 50,000 Americans reside in Egypt. None has been killed or injured so far, Clinton said.

The U.S. response thus far has the support of Republican leaders.

"I think the administration, our administration so far has handled this intense situation pretty well," Boehner said. "Clearly reforms need to occur in Egypt, and any place where people are calling out for freedom and democracy, we have a responsibility to respond."

"I think the president should get a little bit more out ahead. I think his statement that he made day before yesterday was good," Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., told CNN. "The past performance of this administration hasn't been great. They cut off some of the money for democratization, etcetera. But we can review that at a later time. The important thing is I think the president made the right statement. I think that the secretary of state made a good presentation to you. I just want to see her go a little bit further, and let's get out in front on this issue."

To all the people of world

The people in Egypt are under governmental siege. Mubarak regime is banning Facebook, Twitter, and all other popular internet sites Now, the internet are completely blocked in Egypt. Tomorrow the government will block the 3 mobile phone network will be completely blocked.

And there is news that even the phone landlines will be cut tomorrow, to prevent any news agency from following what will happen.

Suez city is already under siege now. The government cut the water supply and electricity, people, including, children and elderly are suffering there now. The patients in hospitals cannot get urgent medical care. The injured protesters are lying in the streets and the riot police are preventing people from helping them. The families of the killed protesters cannot get the bodies of their sons to bury them. This picture is the same in north Saini (El-Sheikh zoyad city) and in western Egypt (Al-salom). The riot police is cracking down on protesters in Ismailia, Alexandria, Fayoum, Shbin Elkoum, and Cairo, the capital, in many neighborhoods across the city.

The government is preparing to crackdown on the protesters in all Egyptian cities. They are using tear gas bombs, rubber and plastic pullets, chemicals like dilutes mustard gas against protesters. Several protesters today have been killed when the armored vehicles of the riot police hit them. Officials in plain clothes carrying blades and knives used to intimidate protesters. Thugs deployed by the Egyptian Ministry of Interior are roaming the streets of Cairo, setting fire on car-wheels as means of black propaganda to demonize protesters and justify police beatings and state torture

All this has been taken place over the past three days during the peaceful demonstrations in Cairo and other cities. Now, with the suspicious silence of the local media and the lack of coverage from the international media, Mubarak and his gang are blocking all the channels that can tell the world about what is happening.

People who call for their freedom need your support and help. Will you give them a hand?

The activists are flooding the net (youtube and other sites) with thousands of pictures and videos showing the riot police firing on armless people. The police started to use ammunition against protesters. 15-year old girl has been injured and another 25 year old man has been shot in the mouth. While nothing of these has appeared in the media, there is more to happen tomorrow. Will you keep silent? Will you keep your mouth shut while seeing all these cruelty and inhumane actions?

We don’t ask for much, just broadcast what is happening

Cairo: Anger starting to focus on Israel, US
By BY MELANIE LIDMAN, JPOST CORRESPONDENT IN CAIRO
    30/01/2011

Reporters Notebook: "Where is your democracy?" protesters ask in anti-American, anti-Mubarak rallies.

CAIRO – Saturday’s optimism on the streets of Cairo for imminent political change gave way to anger on Sunday, as thousands of demonstrators became increasingly frustrated with the lack of response from major world leaders, especially the US.

During the main protest on Sunday in downtown Cairo, one man painted a 20- meter-long message in flowing Arabic cursive that echoed across the square: “Go Away, Mubarak, you are from the Americans, and you’re working for them!”

Egyptians understand that the world is waiting to see if President Hosni Mubarak falls to popular pressure before major leaders decide which side to support. But this is infuriating the demonstrators, who realize that six days of unrest have not accomplished their goal and that they need united international pressure in order to topple the almost-30-year incumbent.

The protests have lacked a clear leader to unite them and provide an alternative to Mubarak, and demonstrators are beginning to focus their wrath not just on Mubarak and the country’s widespread corruption, but also on the United States and, to a lesser extent, Israel. They blame Israel and the US for supporting a government because it is convenient for them, not because it is good for the Egyptian people.

“The USA does not support democracy; they’re supporting Israel, which is like their baby,” said Ahmed, a 26-year-old Cairo resident. “They think Egypt is functional because it’s in favor of their considerations.”

“I don’t care if we have peace [with Israel] or not,” Ahmed continued, echoing the indifference of many demonstrators who don’t have a clear agenda for what they want a future Egypt to look like, as long as it does not include Mubarak. “But will Israel allow us to have a real president? For example, Turkey elected an Islamic government, but it was their choice. Will Israel give us the freedom to make the same choice?” he asked.

Demonstrators are relying on the foreign press to get their message to Obama.

“Isn’t this democracy?” they asked me over and over when I said I was a journalist from America, incredulous that the country held as the pinnacle of world democracy could ignore such widespread popular sentiment.

“Obama has to be on our side. Where is your democracy?” asked Osam L, who works at a foreign bank in Cairo.

“You say Arabs are just donkeys, but the USA is supporting the system, not the people.”

The Jewish community in Cairo and Alexandria both declined to speak with the media, but told The Jerusalem Post that all of its members were safe and going about their daily routine as normally as possible.

Life is slowly returning to Cairo streets after nearly a week of unrest. Many of the stores in the downtown area remained shuttered, but convenience stores and cell phone kiosks were doing brisk business. There was significantly more traffic on the roads, and public transportation and trash collection were partially operational.

At 3:55 pm on Sunday, two fighter jets flew low over the city half a dozen times, ostensibly to remind everyone of the 4:00 pm curfew. The scare tactic was successful – by 4:30, the streets were mostly empty of cars as throngs of people headed on foot toward Tahrir Square.

Sunday’s protests were much less violent, although there was more anger directed at international leaders.

“What you are seeing here is an explosion. We have no other choice,” yelled one demonstrator.

The main protest in Tahrir Square continued to be attended by thousands of demonstrators from all walks of life – toddlers with small flags draped around their shoulders raising a fist in solidarity, old men in traditional garb walking slowly with canes near the sidewalks, giggling school girls, whole families marching arm and arm, young professionals as well as laborers.

“Those people that say we’re out here because of food or oil prices, that’s not true,” said Osam L. “I have enough to eat, thank God. I’m here for my freedom.”

    US Closes Cairo Embassy

Posted by Matthew Avitabile on January 30th, 2011
The United States has decided to close its embassy in Cairo after advising American nationals to leave the country. This also comes as countries from Turkey to Iraq to Argentina are asking its citizens to leave Egypt if possible.
The Embassy closing is for the time being, with no date given for a reopening. Further, it will still offer emergency support for those in-country. There is also a conflicting report that the US Administration is calling for citizens trapped in Egypt to stay put.
“We right now are asking people to limit their movements as much as possible and wait for the additional information that we will have on the charter flights that will be leaving,” Jacobs said. According to senior State Department officials, there are 380 government employees at the U.S. Embassy in Cairo, and 760 family members living with them, CNN reported.

Americans Asked to Leave Egypt by State Dept. UDPATE: So Does Turkey

Posted by Matthew Avitabile on January 30th, 2011
The United States State Department has advised Americans in Egypt to leave as the crisis there escalates. The US government will even be offering flights out of the country.

The State Department said flights to evacuation points would begin Monday.
“The U.S. Embassy in Cairo informs U.S. citizens in Egypt who wish to depart that the Department of State is making arrangements to provide transportation to safe haven locations in Europe,” it said in a statement , describing the evacuation as voluntary.
NBC estimates that there are approximately 500 American embassy staff as well as 50,000 US citizens in-country at the moment, which could complicate any evacuation efforts.
    UPDATE from al Jazeera:
11:48 am: Turkey announces it is sending two Turkish Airlines planes to Egypt on Sunday to evacuate Turkish citizens, the state-run Anatolian news agency quotes embassy officials in Cairo as saying.

    ElBaradei Speech

Posted by Matthew Avitabile on January 30th, 2011
They stole our freedom and what we started cannot be reversed. As we mentioned before– as we mentioned before we have a key demand, for the regime to step down.” ElBaradei told followers.

“Today I have come to share with you the most beautiful day of Egypt.” “Today we are proud of Egyptians.” He clearly called for the regime to step down for a “new era.”
    From CNN:
[Update 8:18 p.m. Cairo, 1:18 p.m. ET] CNN tape of Egyptian opposition leader Mohamed ElBaradei showed him addressing protesters in Cairo: “I came today to participate today in the lives of Egyptians. Today I look into the eyes of each one of you and everyone is different today,” he said. “Today you are an Egyptian demanding your rights and freedom and what we started can never be pushed back. As we said we have one main demand the end of the regime and to start a new phase.”

"For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms."
