Egyptian icon Omar Sharif says time Mubarak went

PARIS Jan 31 (Reuters) - Egyptian film legend Omar Sharif on Monday joined the calls for President Hosni Mubarak to step down, saying he had failed to improve the standard of living for ordinary people and that 30 years in power was enough.
The 78-year old from Alexandria is best known for his role as Arab reformer and revolutionary Sherif Ali in the 1962 movie Lawrence of Arabia.


"The president should have resigned," Sharif told France Inter radio from his home in Cairo. "Given that the entire Egyptian people don't want him and he's been in power for 30 years that's enough."


Protesters were camped out in central Cairo on Monday and vowed to stay until they had toppled Mubarak, whose fate appeared to hang on the military as pressure mounted from the street and abroad.


"The president hasn't improved the standard of living of Egyptians. There are some people that are very rich -- maybe 1 percent -- and the rest are all poor trying to find food," Sharif said.


He added that he was worried about the impact of the Islamist opposition group the Muslim Brotherhood, which for decades has been suppressed by the authorities.


"I don't want the Muslim brotherhood," Sharif said. "They were trapped and now are starting to come out. They have 20 percent of the population and it's frightening for me." (Reporting by John Irish; editing by Jon Boyle)

AH... the first true signs of actual economic collapse! I KNEW it would happen!

When things get bad, the prices go up. But when the money is starting to go down in value, the price (inflation) goes up drastically. ANY flight out is 1000 USD meaning, out of Egypt, just to the nearest airport will cost you a thousand bucks.

The Middle East is going to come apart. I don't think there is going to be a give-and-take on the part of Mubarak at this point. That means there will be violence in the next few days - way over what we're seeing at the moment. I'm a little shocked actually that there have been over 100 deaths in the past week. If these folks are hell bent on change, they need simply to change the government, shut down the city, block doors, keep the "boss" locked down in his office and demand him to leave or step down.

Once he has stepped down, they need to calmly walk away and let him go about his business. If they murder him - then they are no better than the "Muslim Brotherhoods" spinoff group, Hamas.

So - let's hope these folks actually take their time, take a deep breath and do the right things.

Egypt Unrest: Questions and answers

(CNN) -- As the protests in Cairo enter the evening of their seventh day, CNN takes a look at some of the key questions surrounding them.

What are the protests about?

The protesters are calling for democratization -- for a government that they feel represents them. They want President Hosni Mubarak, 82, to step down after 30 years holding onto power, and an end to what they complain is a corrupt regime. Some have called for the government to face a trial.

The anger is driven largely by economic frustrations. Egypt has seen a dramatic rise in the cost of living in recent years. While the government has offered food subsidies to help people handle rising prices, many are struggling.

Egypt's economy was stagnant for decades, but in the past 10 years started to grow, creating bigger differences between rich and poor, said Juan Cole, a Middle East historian at the University of Michigan.

"And I think some of the protest is over the ways in which the labor movements have gotten left behind and haven't shared in the economic growth," he said.

Why now? What sparked the protests?

A wave of protests in nearby Tunisia which overthrew the government helped inspire people in other nearby countries, facing similar frustrations, that it was time for an uprising.

But the spark, in many ways, was one young man. Mohamed Bouazizi, a 26-year-old college graduate in Tunisia, was unable to find work, so he set up a fruit cart. Police confiscated it, saying he had no permit. According to the Federation of Human Rights Leagues, police also beat him. Bouazizi set himself on fire in protest, and later died.

His self-immolation triggered the huge protests in Tunisia, which in turn helped inspire people in other nearby countries, including Algeria and Yemen, to take to the streets as well. There have also been protests in Jordan and Sudan. A Facebook page calls for similar demonstrations in Syria.

A popular Facebook page that helped organize the Cairo protests beginning January 25 was dedicated to Bouazizi.

Who are the protesters?

Many are young men. The majority of Egypt's population is under 30, and the vast majority of its unemployed are as well. While the protesters include people from different socio-economic levels and different parts of the country, there is a "high proportion of the educated middle class," said Cole.

There's "a feeling amongst that middle class that they're not being given the opportunities in life that their degrees warrant -- what historians would call a 'blocked elite,'" Cole said.

Have the protests been violent?

The protesters have generally been peaceful, chanting slogans and holding signs. Last week, police clashed violently with some demonstrators, leaving some dead and others wounded. Once the government sent in the military to take the place of police, the clashes came to a halt. The two sides have generally gotten along well. Some protesters have even posed for pictures with members of the military on their tanks. At times, the protests have even taken on the feeling of a music festival, with people wandering around, chatting, and celebrating.

"This is the start of the rest of my life," one jubilant young man who appeared to be in his 20s told CNN. "As cheesy as it sounds, that's exactly how I feel right now."

How did chaos begin in some areas?

Police disappeared from the streets in parts of Cairo and some other areas, and some police stations were ransacked. Over the weekend, looters attacked stores and homes and torched some cars, and some prisoners escaped.

Men gathered in neighborhoods to create vigilante groups protecting their property. In some places, people handed out knives, sticks, clubs, and baseball bats to men and teenage boys, encouraging them to fight any looters who came along.

Some Egyptians said they worry the chaos could be part of Mubarak's strategy, getting citizens angry at the protesters for creating havoc and excited for government security forces to come along and bring order. But the crime has also built more frustration against the government among many Egyptians.

How many have died?

While it's difficult to ascertain a solid death toll, Human Rights Watch staffers have confirmed more than 120 deaths in Cairo, Alexandria, and Suez, according to a researcher for the group in Cairo.

How is the food supply?

Many families are fast running out of staples, and they are either unable or unwilling to shop for groceries. "I have three children, and I only have enough to feed them for maybe two more days. After that I do not know what we will do," school administrator Gamalat Gadalla said.

Grocers have closed up shop or are running out of supplies themselves.

"With the curfew, there are no restaurants, food or gas. Basic goods will soon be in shortage," Sandmonkey, an Egyptian blogger said via Twitter.

Egyptian state-run Nile TV has set up a hotline for citizens to call in and report bread shortages. There has been no other indication of what the Egyptian government is doing to address the crisis.

Tourists Continue To Visit Parts Of Egypt Despite Unrest

Airlines were evacuating travelers from Egypt's major cities Monday as an anti-government revolt that has left at least 125 people dead spilled into a seventh day, but some travel operators were continuing to fly holidaymakers to the country's Red Sea tourist resorts, insisting they were safe.

Countries were offering differing advice to their citizens about traveling to Egypt, with nations including the U.S., Turkey and Saudi Arabia organizing evacuations, and others, including the U.K., saying citizens should leave major cities but were safe to holiday in coastal resorts. China, India and Australia advised citizens not to go Egypt at all, Agence France Presse reported.

U.K. tour operators TUI Travel PLC (TT.LN) and Thomas Cook Group PLC (TCG.LN) Monday cancelled U.K. flights to the Egyptian city of Luxor after the British government warned against all but essential travel to Cairo, Alexandria, Luxor and Suez after more civil unrest.

The U.K. altered its travel advice for Egypt over the weekend, recommending that British nationals without a pressing need to be in Cairo, Alexandria or Suez leave by commercial means as long as it was safe to do so.

However, the advice didn't apply to some popular Red Sea tourist resorts like Sharm El Sheikh and tour operators currently are operating normal services to these destinations. The Red Sea resorts served by the two travel companies are well away from the cities affected by the new U.K. government advice and are served by their own airports.

"Our experienced teams on the ground assure us that no tourist areas at the Red Sea have been affected in any way by the recent demonstrations," Thomas Cook said on its website. "They are fully operational and holidaymakers are continuing to enjoy these popular resorts." Thomas Cook and TUI Travel are Europe's largest tour operators.

The British government said it wouldn't be organizing special charter flights to evacuate U.K. nationals from Egypt and anyone wanting to leave would have to use commercial flights. However, U.K. commercial flights to the cities affected by the travel guidance were suffering disruptions.

Media reports in the U.K. said about 30,000 British tourists currently are in Egypt.

In Germany, local tour operators Monday extended deadlines for canceling and rescheduling trips to Egypt after its foreign ministry renewed warnings against travel to the country.

TUI Deutschland, a unit of TUI AG (TUI1.XE), which has a majority stake in TUI Travel, said customers now could cancel trips to Cairo and Luxor until Feb. 7, rather than until Feb. 3. Thomas Cook's German unit also pushed back the date for free rescheduling of Egyptian trips to Feb. 7 from Feb. 2.

"Trips to Luxor--including Nile cruises originating there--are canceled because excursions to cultural sights, usually the main reason for a Nile cruise or stay in Luxor, cannot take place or are possible only with restrictions," TUI said.

TUI has about 7,000 tourists vacationing in Egypt at present, it said. Germany's national travel association DRV couldn't say how many German tourists were in the country but estimated about 1.2 million Germans travel to Egypt on vacation annually.

Not all companies considered the Red Sea resorts to be safe. French vacation resort operator Club Mediterranee SA (CU.FR) said Monday it had organized a flight to repatriate holidaymakers from its vacation village at Sinai Bay on the Red Sea. It also has organized seats to repatriate tourists on flights from the Egyptian resorts of Luxor and Hurghada, where the company also has vacation villages, Club Med spokesman Thierry Orsoni told Dow Jones Newswires.

Like most tour operators, Club Med stopped flying its customers to Egypt last week as a precautionary move, and halted excursions from its vacation villages. The three villages in Egypt represent 4.9% of Club Med's total room capacity in the winter season.

Kuoni Holding AG (KUNN.EB) said it was flying about 600 tourists in Egypt back to Switzerland after the Swiss government advised against visiting the country. The Zurich-based travel operator said it will monitor whether evacuation flights become necessary in coming days.

The foreign ministry said roughly 1,500 Swiss residents are estimated to be in Egypt, and another 1,574 Swiss citizens live there. The recommendation to leave Egypt was for both groups, government spokesman Georg Farago said.

Who Stands With Iran's Opposition?

PARIS — Excruciating new problems never nullify the old ones. In the case of Iran’s potential nuclear threat, Egypt’s gathering implosion — joined by some new elements of concern — is only more bad news for the West.

For a month or so, a kind of notional pause on Iran had been in order, a seeming parenthesis of respite and reflection: a departing Israeli spy chief’s estimate of a due-date for the mullahs’ capacity to build nukes pushed it off three years into the future; a fruitless meeting with Iran in Istanbul was portrayed as going well in terms of Russia and China’s cooperation with the United States and its allies; the effect of sanctions and other measures taken against the Iranian leadership was described by Washington as successful to the point of being “underreported” by the news media.

And now? A situation in Egypt where the West, including the Obama administration, looks both challenged in articulating its support for the protesters shaking an apparently futureless regime in Cairo and unwilling to openly assert that it wants a successor to Hosni Mubarak who would hold to his clear line against Iran becoming a nuclear power.

In Tehran, the mullahs have been comparing the wobbling Mubarak regime to the fall of the shah in 1979.

Indeed, a better comparison might be with the circumstances around the mullahs’ stolen election in 2009. At the time — and since — President Barack Obama of the United States didn’t (and hasn’t) offered either verbal or practical backing to the Iranian opposition against a government whose history of oppression and contempt for the law is well documented, and well known.

Now check out this cornucopia of emerging and baleful ironies relating to Iran that might be delighting the mullahs:

• The man mentioned in Washington as a possible leader of a caretaker government in preparation for an election in Egypt is Mohamed ElBaradei, the former director of the International Atomic Energy Agency, the global nuclear watchdog.

Over the weekend, the French newspaper Le Figaro described Mr. ElBaradei’s tenure as bent on minimizing the danger of Iran’s nuclear program. Its security affairs writer quoted a former French high representative at the agency as saying of the Egyptian, who was given the 2005 Nobel Peace Prize for his leadership at I.A.E.A.: “He systematically underestimated the progress of the Iranian program, used deliberately vague language, and concealed certain essential elements. He contributed to delaying sanctions against Iran.”

Washington provided the irony: An American official, referring to the Egyptian, said: “He’s shown an independence from us that will squelch any argument he’s doing our bidding.”

• Russia’s moment of seeming helpfulness involving Iran may be replaced by another attempt by Moscow to wield its cooperation on the issue as a new quid pro quo.

At the Istanbul conference just over a week ago, the Russian foreign minister, Sergey V. Lavrov, called for sanctions on Iran to be reduced rather than strengthened, Reuters reported. Russia has since urged NATO to investigate the successful cyberattacks, origin unknown, on Iran’s Russian-made nuclear reactors. And President Dmitri A. Medvedev, speaking at Davos last week almost a year after a Russian security chief acknowledged that the West’s fears of a Iranian drive toward nukes were “well-founded,” reverted to the old Russian line that “the international community so far has no information that Iran is building nuclear weapons.”

The possible maneuver: Over the past two years, Russia could regard that it had some success in trying to leverage its position on Iran in exchange for modifications in NATO’s plans for a missile defense shield or the New Start nuclear arms agreement with the Americans. Now, just as it refashions its view on Iran, it is making clear, according to articles last week in the Russian newspaper Kommersant, that its view of cooperating with NATO on missile defense must involve “sectorization,” or giving Russia responsibility for an area in Eastern and Northern Europe that NATO believes would recreate a Soviet-type zone of influence.

All this has the look of renewed Russian hardball, with Iran potentially reappearing in the game as a pressure point. Irony? Mr. Medvedev, everybody’s pal in the Kremlin, chose a tone of friendly regret last week to say that if there’s no acceptance of Russian terms on missile defense, “In the future, we’ll have to take unpleasant decisions on the deployment of nuclear strike units.”

• The French, who uncovered the Iranians’ secret nuclear reactor in Qum in 2009, are now making the case to the allies that they have hard evidence that North Korea has exported significant quantities of highly enriched uranium to Iran.

That is an assertion that wilts irony. Basically, it seems to mean: How can anyone say there’s a lengthened timetable for dealing with Iran and less urgency for tougher unilateral measures that skirt the U.N. Security Council?

George Perkovich, a vice president of the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace in Washington, adds another element of concern.

He says that under the new circumstances, and in light of Iran’s humiliation through the cybersabotage of computers at some of its nuclear sites and the violent deaths of figures in the nuclear program, the mullahs will not consider genuine negotiations until they have gotten revenge, possibly in Lebanon.

That leaves new sanctions. The strongest possible measures would involve restrictions aimed at Iranian crude oil exports, according to Mark Dubowitz, executive director of the Foundation for the Defense of Democracies. He believes they have wide bipartisan support in Congress, although it is uncertain whether Mr. Obama, who has the authority to pursue sanctions of this type through existing legislation, will order them.

Call that a description of wavering rather than resolve. It is hard to separate events in Egypt from the situation in Iran, but there is nothing resembling willingness on the part of the allies to join them together as one overarching problem requiring a similar response.

In a time of overwhelming caution, the odds seem small that the United States or anyplace else in the West might encourage Iranians in the manner Mr. Obama did Egypt’s protesters last week — albeit glancingly.

He said, “The United States will continue to stand up for the rights of the Egyptian people” as it pursues “a future that is more just, more free and hopeful.”

In the Iranian case, that would also be a future very much less dangerous for the world.

Clinton convenes mass meeting of US ambassadors

WASHINGTON (AP) — Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton is convening an unprecedented mass meeting of U.S. ambassadors.

The top envoys from nearly all of America's 260 embassies, consulates and other posts in more than 180 countries will be gathering at the State Department beginning on Monday. Officials say it's the first such global conference.

The gathering comes at a time of crisis in Egypt that could reshape dynamics in the Middle East, fallout from leaked diplomatic documents and congressional calls for sweeping cuts in foreign aid.


Although the meeting has been called to discuss U.S. foreign policy priorities for 2011, officials say Clinton plans to meet personally with ambassadors from front-line states to hear about developments on the ground. Officials also expect that specific concerns about the WikiLeaks revelations will be raised.

Guard detachment is heading to Egypt

Groton - Connecticut National Guard Detachment 2, Company I, 185th Aviation Regiment of Groton has mobilized and will deploy to the Sinai Peninsula, Egypt, to support the Multinational Force and Observers.

The unit left Connecticut Jan. 15 for Fort Benning, Ga., for further training and validation. The unit operates C-23C Sherpa aircraft and has deployed three times in the last seven years in support of the conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan.

The unit will provide an on-demand aviation asset to the Multinational Force and Observers commander to support its mission of supervising the security provisions of the Egypt/ Israel Peace Treaty.

Chief Warrant Officer Four James Smith of Ivoryton commands the aviation unit.

China Should Buy More Gold, Silver for Reserves, Daily Reports

China should increase its gold and silver reserves, the Economic Information Daily reported today, citing an interview with central bank adviser Xia Bin.

Increasing gold reserves at the “appropriate time” is in line with the strategy of internationalizing the yuan, the report cited Xia as saying. “Related departments” should employ a “buy in the dip” strategy over a very long period of time, Xia said.

It's not often you hear news like this:

On Sunday, Treasury Secretary Geithner will have dinner at Treasury with former secretaries of the Treasury.

What's up with this? There was no indication on the weekly Treasury schedule, put out just a day ago, that this dinner was planned. Very unusual.

On top of that, the Treasury put this notice out at 9:00PM on a Saturday night. Sure looks like a rushed meeting to me.
