Obama to Egyptian Army: Remove Mubarak now, start transition
    DEBKAfile Exclusive Report February 2, 2011, 11:16 PM (GMT+02:00)

Wednesday, February 2nd, President Barack Obama delivered an ultimatum to Egyptian Vice President Omar Suleiman and the army and security chiefs: Mubarak must be removed in the coming hours or else US aid to Egypt will be cut off, Debkafile's Washington sources exclusively report. Pressure on the Egyptian armed forces to oust the president forthwith was further applied by Secretary of State Hillary Clinton who called Vice President Omar Suleiman, US Defense Secretary Robert Gates who called Egyptian defense minister Mohamed Tantawi, and US armed forces chief Admiral Mike Mullen in a telephone call to the Egyptian chief of staff General Sami Enan.

French President Nicolas Sarkozy, German Chancellor Angela Merkel and UK Prime Minister David Cameron were recruited earlier to lean hard on Egyptian army chiefs to bring Mubarak's presidency to an end in the coming hours.

Our sources report that all the Israelis remaining in Egypt, including news correspondents, were evacuated from Egypt Wednesday night in view of the danger of civil warfare spreading from the first confrontation in Tahrir Square between pro- and anti-Mubarak activists on the ninth day of the campaign for his overthrow.

It turned into a bloody collision with 30 confirmed dead and at least 2,000 injured - most of them protesters.

Obama slapped down his ultimatum when he saw Mubarak had unleashed the strong-arm squads of his National Democratic Party against the anti-government protesters, the day after he told the nation that he would stay for the remainder of his term as president.

The White House shot back: "President Barack Obama has been clear on Egypt that the transition must begin now, and now means now."

Obama hardened his position following three more occurrences:

    1. The Egyptian Army for the first time abandoned its neutrality and let 50,000 Mubarak supporters enter Tahrir Square where the protesters had been gathering without stopping them for inspection at the checkpoints outside. They stormed into the square on camels and horses, trampled protesters and beat about them with knives, swords, axes and petrol bombs.

Until that moment, the White House had been confident that the Egyptian army was solidly behind a peaceful transition process for displacing the president. But then, alarm signals started flashing.

Debkafile sources report that the US administration is trying to find out if the army has switched its support to the president on the initiative of a local commander, or the entire military command has backtracked and laid the country open to a civil conflict. An Egyptian source told Debkafile Wednesday night: The country may be descending into a bloodbath.

    2. Information reached Washington that the first appearance of violent Mubarak loyalists in Tahrir Square was not the Egyptian president's final throw but his first. More are planned for the coming days in other parts of the country too, climaxing on Friday, February 4.

The Americans have begun to understand that the 82-year old Egyptian president, although seriously ill, has no plans to go quietly as he promised in his speech to the nation Tuesday night. It is even possible that he may not go voluntarily at all.

    3. The first fissures appeared Wednesday in opposition ranks. All ten secular parties agreed to respond positively to the Vice President's invitation to dialogue on constitutional reform, excepting the Muslim Brotherhood, which is the largest and best organized of them all. Its leaders refused to have any truck with the regime or any of its leaders and demanded that Mubarak step down without further delay.

The Brotherhood also heated up its denunciations of America, Britain and Israel.

Suleiman calls for end to protests
Egyptian vice-president says talks with opposition can start only after protests end.
    Last Modified: 02 Feb 2011 21:22 GMT

Egypt's newly appointed vice-president has said that anti-government protests must stop before dialogue can begin with opposition groups.

Omar Suleiman made the comments on Wednesday, amid violent clashes in central Cairo between pro-and anti-government demonstrators that have left at least one dead and hundreds injured.

Suleiman, the former head of intelligence named vice-president on Saturday by President Hosni Mubarak, urged demonstrators to respect an earlier call from the Egyptian army and return to their homes, state media said.

Suleiman called on "all citizens to respond to our armed forces's call to return to your homes and respect the curfew, to support the state's efforts to restore calm and stability.

"Those taking part in these protests have delivered their message," he said.

"Dialogue with the political [opposition] forces... requires that the demonstrations end and the Egyptian street returns to normal," he said.

His comments came after Barack Obama, the US president, led world leaders in calling for an "orderly transition of power" to begin immediately but the Egyptian foreign ministry rejected such calls saying the comments "sought to inflame the internal situation in Egypt".

But opposition leaders insisted there can be no negotiations until Mubarak steps down.

UN human rights chief: 300 reported dead in Egypt protests
The UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Navi Pillay, called on Egyptian authorities to change its system that encourages abuses of the country's people, in an unusually frank call from a UN official.
By News Agencies Tags: Israel news UN

The U.N. human rights chief said on Tuesday she had unconfirmed reports that up to 300 people may have been killed and over 3,000 injured in the unrest that has engulfed Egypt for the past week.

The U.N. High Commissioner for Human Rights, Navi Pillay, was appalled by reported death toll and injury count, saying, "I urge the Egyptian authorities to ensure police and other security forces scrupulously avoid excessive use of force."

Pillay urged investigations into the role of security forces during the violence and their sudden disappearance from the streets of Cairo, leaving what she described as a "security vacuum."

"People must not be arbitrarily detained, simply for protesting or for expressing their political opinions, however unwelcome those opinions may be to those in power," she added.

The UN's top human rights official praised the protest movement in Egypt on Tuesday and called on authorities to change a system that encourages abuses of the country's people, in an unusually frank call from a UN official.

"The whole world is watching how the president and the reconfigured government will react to the continuing protests demanding a radical change," the U.N. High Commissioner for Human Rights, Navi Pillay, said in a statement.

Pillay continued, "the population appears to be clearly rejecting a system that has deprived people of fundamental rights, and has committed a range of serious abuses, including widespread acts of torture."

Thousands of people have gathered on the streets of Cairo to demand the ouster of President Hosni Mubarak, who is blamed for ignoring the needs of the poor and allowing corruption and official abuse to run rampant during his nearly 30 years in power.

Pillay said the Egyptian government should stop interfering with communications, internet and transport systems, as well as news organizations covering the protests.

The human rights chief called for calm during Tuesday's protests, in what she deemed to be a potentially "pivotal moment".

An interesting blast from the past in light of recent events...

'Obama Met Muslim Brotherhood Members In U.S.'
Egyptian newspaper Almasry Alyoum reports president met group's members who live in U.S., Europe

    April 6, 2009

U.S. President Barack Obama met with members of Egypt's Islamist opposition movement, the Muslim Brotherhood, earlier this year, according to a report in Thursday editions of the Egyptian daily newspaper Almasry Alyoum.

The newspaper reported that Obama met the group's members, who reside in the U.S. and Europe, in Washington two months ago.

According to the report, the members requested that news of the meeting not be publicized. They expressed to Obama their support for democracy and the war on terror.

The newspaper also reported that the members communicated to Obama their position that the Muslim Brotherhood would abide by all agreements Egypt has signed with foreign countries.

Obama landed in Cairo on Thursday to deliver a conciliatory speech as part of his outreach to the Arab and Muslim world.

The Muslim Brotherhood is considered a Sunni-dominated fundamentalist Islamic organization that has spawned numerous factions across the Arab world that have engaged in terrorist activity, including the Palestinian rejectionist group Hamas.

It is also the main opposition bloc to Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak, whose regime is viewed favorably in the West due to its adherence to the thirty-year-old peace treaty between Israel and Egypt.

The Cairo University setting in which Obama will make his Middle East speech is spectacular and will accommodate a highly unusual audience.

Israel's ambassador to Egypt, Shalom Cohen, who had been specifically invited by the White House, will be seated not far from Iran's representative and the 11 members of the Egyptian Parliament who belong to the Muslim Brotherhood.

Also present will be a group of Egyptian artists who oppose normalization with Israel, including film stars Adel Imam and Leila Alawi.

Just hours before the speech, the hall in which Obama will speak was nearly filled to capacity.

Egyptian sources said Ambassador Cohen was invited by the president of the university, Prof. Hossam Kamel, who told journalists the instruction to invite Cohen came from "on high" and was "impossible to refuse." The White House constructed the guest list together with the director-general of Mubarak's office, and the Egyptian president personally authorized the result.

The Muslim Brotherhood MPs had requested an emergency debate in parliament on the invitation of the Israeli ambassador, and university lecturers threatened to block Cohen from entering the campus. However, the protests were said to have subsided when the Muslim Brotherhood MPs found their names on the guest list as well, along with the name of recently released opposition activist Ayman Nour.
