"Wanis al-Sharef, eastern Libya's deputy interior minister, then said on Thursday the attacks were suspected to have been timed to mark the 9/11 anniversary and that the militants used civilians protesting an anti-Islam film as cover for their action.

The same official also told Reuters that arrests have been made in connection with the investigation. It's unclear whether those arrested are chief suspects. Sharef said "some people have been arrested," but stressed the Libyan government is still "gathering evidence."

Separately, Sharef offered new details about the operation behind the attack Tuesday. He said U.S. Ambassador Christopher Stevens and another official were killed in the consulate, but that the attackers timed a second wave on the safe house just as Libyan and U.S. security forces were arriving to rescue evacuated consulate staff....."

The killings of the US ambassador to Libya and three of his staff were likely to have been the result of a serious and continuing security breach, The Independent can reveal.

American officials believe the attack was planned, but Chris Stevens had been back in the country only a short while and the details of his visit to Benghazi, where he and his staff died, were meant to be confidential.

The US administration is now facing a crisis in Libya. Sensitive documents have gone missing from the consulate in Benghazi and the supposedly secret location of the "safe house" in the city, where the staff had retreated, came under sustained mortar attack. Other such refuges across the country are no longer deemed "safe".

Some of the missing papers from the consulate are said to list names of Libyans who are working with Americans, putting them potentially at risk from extremist groups, while some of the other documents are said to relate to oil contracts.

According to senior diplomatic sources, the US State Department had credible information 48 hours before mobs charged the consulate in Benghazi, and the embassy in Cairo, that American missions may be targeted, but no warnings were given for diplomats to go on high alert and "lockdown", under which movement is severely restricted.

Mr Stevens had been on a visit to Germany, Austria and Sweden and had just returned to Libya when the Benghazi trip took place with the US embassy's security staff deciding that the trip could be undertaken safely.

Eight Americans, some from the military, were wounded in the attack which claimed the lives of Mr Stevens, Sean Smith, an information officer, and two US Marines. All staff from Benghazi have now been moved to the capital, Tripoli, and those whose work is deemed to be non-essential may be flown out of Libya.

In the meantime a Marine Corps FAST Anti-Terrorism Reaction Team has already arrived in the country from a base in Spain and other personnel are believed to be on the way. Additional units have been put on standby to move to other states where their presence may be needed in the outbreak of anti-American fury triggered by publicity about a film which demeaned the Prophet Mohamed.

A mob of several hundred stormed the US embassy in the Yemeni capital Sanaa yesterday. Other missions which have been put on special alert include almost all those in the Middle East, as well as in Pakistan, Afghanistan, Armenia, Burundi and Zambia.

Senior officials are increasingly convinced, however, that the ferocious nature of the Benghazi attack, in which rocket-propelled grenades were used, indicated it was not the result of spontaneous anger due to the video, called Innocence of Muslims. Patrick Kennedy, Under-Secretary at the State Department, said he was convinced the assault was planned due to its extensive nature and the proliferation of weapons.

There is growing belief that the attack was in revenge for the killing in a drone strike in Pakistan of Mohammed Hassan Qaed, an al-Qa'ida operative who was, as his nom-de-guerre Abu Yahya al-Libi suggests, from Libya, and timed for the anniversary of the 11 September attacks.

Senator Bill Nelson, a member of the Senate Intelligence Committee, said: "I am asking my colleagues on the committee to immediately investigate what role al-Qa'ida or its affiliates may have played in the attack and to take appropriate action."

According to security sources the consulate had been given a "health check" in preparation for any violence connected to the 9/11 anniversary. In the event, the perimeter was breached within 15 minutes of an angry crowd starting to attack it at around 10pm on Tuesday night. There was, according to witnesses, little defence put up by the 30 or more local guards meant to protect the staff. Ali Fetori, a 59-year-old accountant who lives near by, said: "The security people just all ran away and the people in charge were the young men with guns and bombs."

Wissam Buhmeid, the commander of the Tripoli government-sanctioned Libya's Shield Brigade, effectively a police force for Benghazi, maintained that it was anger over the Mohamed video which made the guards abandon their post. "There were definitely people from the security forces who let the attack happen because they were themselves offended by the film; they would absolutely put their loyalty to the Prophet over the consulate. The deaths are all nothing compared to insulting the Prophet."

Mr Stevens, it is believed, was left in the building by the rest of the staff after they failed to find him in dense smoke caused by a blaze which had engulfed the building. He was discovered lying unconscious by local people and taken to a hospital, the Benghazi Medical Centre, where, according to a doctor, Ziad Abu Ziad, he died from smoke inhalation.

An eight-strong American rescue team was sent from Tripoli and taken by troops under Captain Fathi al- Obeidi, of the February 17 Brigade, to the secret safe house to extract around 40 US staff. The building then came under fire from heavy weapons. "I don't know how they found the place to carry out the attack. It was planned, the accuracy with which the mortars hit us was too good for any ordinary revolutionaries," said Captain Obeidi. "It began to rain down on us, about six mortars fell directly on the path to the villa."

Libyan reinforcements eventually arrived, and the attack ended. News had arrived of Mr Stevens, and his body was picked up from the hospital and taken back to Tripoli with the other dead and the survivors.

Mr Stevens' mother, Mary Commanday, spoke of her son yesterday. "He did love what he did, and he did a very good job with it. He could have done a lot of other things, but this was his passion. I have a hole in my heart," she said.

Global anger: The protests spread

Yemen

The furore across the Middle East over the controversial film about the Prophet Mohamed is now threatening to get out of control. In Sana'a, the Yemeni capital, yesterday around 5,000 demonstrators attacked the US embassy, leaving at least 15 people injured. Young protesters, shouted: "We sacrifice ourselves for you, Messenger of God," smashed windows of the security offices and burned at least five cars, witnesses said.

Egypt

Egypt's Islamist President Mohamed Morsi yesterday condemned the attack in Benghazi that killed the US ambassador. In a speech in Brussels, Mr Morsi said he had spoken to President Obama and condemned "in the clearest terms" the Tuesday attacks. Despite this, and possibly playing to a domestic audience, President Obama said yesterday that "I don't think we would consider them an ally, but we don't consider them an enemy".
Demonstrators in Cairo attacked the mission on Tuesday evening and protests have continued since.

Iraq

Militants said the anti-Islamic film "will put all the American interests Iraq in danger" and called on Muslims everywhere to "face our joint enemy", as protesters in Baghdad burned American flags yesterday. The warning from the Iranian-backed group Asaib Ahl al-Haq came as demonstrators demanded the closure of the US embassy in the capital.

Bangladesh

Islamists warned they may "besiege" the US embassy in Dhaka after security forces stopped around 1,000 protesters marching to the building. The Khelafat Andolon group called for bigger protests as demonstrators threw their fists in the air, burned the flag and chanted anti-US slogans.

Others

There was a Hamas-organised protest in Gaza City, and as many as 100 Arab Israelis took to the streets in Tel Aviv. In Afghanistan, President Hamid Karzai postponed a trip to Norway, fearing violence. Officials in Pakistan said they "expected protests". Protesters in Tunis burnt US flags.

While Congress ignores it (or secretly supports it), the US courts continue to fall one by one towards accepting and utilizing Shari’a law in place of US law and the wholly-owned-by-the-totalitarian-Left-and/or-the-Saudis (same thing) media continue their mindless and largely irrelevant programming (to continue the mesmerization of the American people) Obama is openly supporting and assisting the Islamist takeover of the USA. I have been writing about this since prior to the Obama syndicate’s usurpation of the White House. However, it’s comforting to know that my more well-known brethren have at last gotten the message and are now, also, writing about it. In the end, we are all in this together!

Recently, Senior Fellow for European Politics at the Madrid-based Grupo de Estudios Soeren Kern wrote in his article “Caliphate Conference” Seeks to Islamize Europe, U.S.”: “The explicit aim of the Istanbul Process — currently backed by the Obama administration — is to make it an international crime to criticize Islam. A Muslim fundamentalist group is organizing a conference focused on turning Austria and other European countries into Islamic states.

The ‘Caliphate Conference 2012′ will be held on March 10 in the Austrian town of Vösendorf, situated just south of Vienna. The main theme of the event will be ‘The Caliphate: The State Model of the Future.’

The conference is being organized by Hizb ut-Tahrir [Party of Liberation], a pan-Islamic extremist group that seeks to establish a global Islamic state, or caliphate, ruled by Islamic Sharia law.

Shortly thereafter, WND published the article “Planning for Islamic Caliphate Begins” in which it exposes a December 2011 Islamist Conference held in Washington D.C.–also with support from Obama–at which Sec. of State Hillary Clinton spoke in favor of the Islamists’ plans to stop anti-Islam speech in the USA. The “Istanbul Process” (also surprise-surprise is supported by the U.N.) would deny anti-Islamic speech, only, and if any anti-Muslim/Islam speech leads to said Muslims rioting and pillaging (which is what they do on a regular basis, anyway) the speaker would be held liable, jailed or worse.

The unidentified source said Nakoula was connected to the persona of Sam Bacile. A man calling himself Sam Bacile initially claimed to be the writer and director of the film, but doubts have surfaced regarding his identity.

The U.S. government is tracking down a filmmaker for making a video that criticizes Islam.

You'd think Bill Maher, who makes his living by mocking established religions, might take to Twitter to defend the filmmaker in question.

(CNSNews.com) - The Muslim Brotherhood’s Freedom and Justice Party (FJP) in Egypt denounced the anti-Islam movie that reportedly served as a catalyst for the Islamist storming of the U.S. Embassy in Egypt and the murder of the U.S. Ambassador to Libya.

Secretary General of the Muslim Brotherhood Mahmud Hussein on Wednesday called for protests to be held on Friday throughout Egypt against the movie.

He stopped short of condemning the attack on the U.S. Embassy in Cairo.

The protests staged by radical Islamists in Egypt and Libya were reportedly sparked by an anti-Islam movie that depicts the prophet Muhammad in a disparaging way. The film was made by Israeli-American filmmaker Sam Bacile.

Bacile made the film entitled, “Innocence of Muslims” during the summer of 2011, and its trailer was posted on YouTube in July of this year. It was later dubbed into Egyptian Arabic.

In response, the Muslim Brotherhood calls, “for peaceful protests on Friday outside all the main mosques in all of Egypt’s provinces to denounce offences to religion and to the Prophet,” said Hussein.

The official statement from the FJP on Tuesday also makes no mention of either the attacks on the US Embassy in Cairo or the Consulate in Benghazi, Libya.

“The Freedom and Justice Party (FJP) expresses strong condemnation of the film produced and promoted by US Coptic Christian individuals, which deals serious insults to the Prophet Mohammed,” according to the official statement.

“The party considers the film a racist crime and a failed attempt to provoke sectarian strife between the two elements of the nation: Muslims and Christians,” the FJP said.

“The FJP affirms that both elements of the Egyptian people – Christians and Muslims – have been and will always be united in the face of such despicable attempts that seek to foment conflict in this homeland, and to throw it in a deep abyss, a never-ending spiral of violence.”

On Tuesday, radical Islamists stormed the U.S. Embassy in Cairo, tore down the American flag, and replaced with a black flag that reads, “There is no god but Allah and Mohammad is his messenger.”

In the Libyan city of Benghazi, U.S. Ambassador to Libya Chris Stevens along with three other personnel were killed during an attack on the U.S. Consulate.

The attack on an American consulate building in Libya that left the ambassador and three other Americans dead may have been a planned operation by a group linked to al-Qaeda timed to coincide with the anniversary of the 9/11 terror attacks, sources in the US and Libya said Wednesday.

Sources in Libya told CNN that al-Qaeda operatives carried out the attack in revenge for a slain terrorist operative, using the release of an anti-Islam movie as a pretext for the chaos.

Protesters stormed the US Consulate in Benghazi late Tuesday night, setting fire to the building and killing Ambassador Chris Stevens as well as three other staffers.

The four were reportedly killed when fired at by a rocket-propelled grenade, part of a planned attack on the compound by two waves of gunmen.

US officials said some 50 Marines were being sent to Libya to reinforce security at US diplomatic facilities.

The Marines are members of an elite group known as a Fleet Antiterrorism Security Team, or FAST, whose role is to respond on short notice to terrorism threats and to reinforce security at embassies.

The Marines, sent from a base in Spain, were headed initially to the US Embassy in Tripoli, not to Benghazi, according to US officials, who spoke on the condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to talk to the press.

Officials also said the Pentagon decided to move two warships toward the Libyan coast.

Officials say one destroyer, the USS Laboon, moved to a position off the coast Wednesday, and the USS McFaul is en route and should be stationed off the coast within days. The officials say the ships, which carry Tomahawk missiles, do not have a specific mission. But they give commanders flexibility to respond to any mission ordered by the president.

According to Israel’s Channel 2 news analyst Ehud Yaari, the attack was planned to coincide with September 11, the anniversary of al-Qaeda’s attack on the US 11 years earlier, and was carried out in revenge for the killing of Abu Yahya al-Libi by US forces in June.

US officials say the Obama administration is also investigating whether it was a planned terrorist strike to mark the anniversary of 9/11.

Intelligence officials said the attack on the Benghazi consulate was too coordinated or professional to be spontaneous, according to a US counterterrorism official who spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to discuss the incident publicly.

White House press secretary Jay Carney said it was too early to judge whether the attack was planned.

“I know that this is being investigated, and we’re working with the Libyan government to investigate the incident. I would not want to speculate on that at this time,” he said. Several Libyan security guards also were killed.

House Intelligence Committee Chairman Mike Rogers said US intelligence had not yet determined who was responsible, but added, “Our list is narrowing.”

“When you see (such an attack), it wasn’t some folks who had some guns in their garage and said let’s shoot up the consulate,” Rogers said in an interview Wednesday.

The FBI was sending evidence teams to Libya, said a law enforcement official.

Hours before the attack, al-Qaeda leader Ayman al-Zawahiri released a video confirming Libi’s death and calling for his blood to be avenged. Yaari added that Zawahiri’s brother Mohammed, recently released from an Egyptian prison, may have had a hand in planning the attack as well.

Details of how the Americans were killed were still being pieced together Wednesday. But according to Libyan Deputy Interior Minister Wanis al-Sharef’s account, two distinct attacks took place.

Al-Sharef said Stevens and a consultate staffer who had stayed behind in the building were killed in the initial attack on the consulate.
The rest of the staff successfully evacuated to another building nearby, preparing to move to Benghazi Airport after daybreak to fly to the capital, Tripoli, he said.

Hours after the storming of the consulate, a separate group of gunmen attacked the other building, opening fire on the more than 30 Americans and Libyans inside. Two more Americans were killed and 32 wounded – 14 Americans and 18 Libyans, he said.

Stevens was a career member of the US Foreign Service specializing in the Middle East, and served at various diplomatic posts around the region, including a stint as political section chief at the US Consulate in Jerusalem.

US sources told CNN that the attacks were pre-planned, but were unable to confirm whether the protest over the film, a low-budget affair that depicts the Muslim prophet Mohammad in a harsh light, was part of the attack, or whether the terrorists merely took advantage of it.

They added that Stevens was likely not specifically targeted.

According to the report, the Imprisoned Omar Abdul Rahman Brigades is suspected to be behind the attack. The little-known terror group, with links to al-Qaeda, has claimed responsibility for other attacks on international forces near Benghazi in the past.

In Cairo, some 200 Islamists staged a second day of protest outside the U.S. Embassy on Wednesday, but there were no more attempts to scale the embassy walls. After nightfall, the group dwindled and some protesters scuffled with police, who fired tear gas and dispersed them, emptying the streets.


White House: No cutting off Egyptian aid

Despite calls for ending foreign aid to Egypt in the wake of an attack on the U.S. embassy in Cairo, the White House is standing by funding commitments.

Asked on Air Force One Thursday if the United States would withhold aid, White House press secretary Jay Carney said simply: "No."

Carney also told reporters that the partnership with Egypt continues as the country transitions into democracy — in the wake of President Obama's comments Wednesday that Egypt was neither an ally nor an enemy.

Some Republicans on the Hill are pushing a change to the bill that funds the government through December to ban foreign aid to Egypt and Libya. A question to the White House for comment on that effort underway was not answered.

Clinton paid tribute to the men who were killed individually, describing Chris Stevens as a man who "risked his life to help protect the Libyan people from a tyrant and he gave his life helping them build a better country.” She warns that people in the liberated Arab Spring nations "did not trade the tyranny of a dictator for the tyranny of a mob".

There was an interesting interaction between the two former rivals after Obama finished speaking, as Obama briefly reached out and held Clinton's hand.

He's being joined by some of the most senior members of his cabinet: Vice President Joe Biden, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and Secretary of Defence Leon Panetta. Obama will meet with the families of the dead before speaking briefly.
18.33 (13.33) Tunisia's official news agency is reporting that two people were killed and 29 injured in clashes at the US Embassy in Tunis today.
18.28 (13.28) President Obama has formally notified Congress by letter that he is deploying American forces into Libya and Yemen, as required by the US Constitution.
Although these security forces are equipped for combat, these movements have been undertaken solely for the purpose of protecting American citizens and property. These security forces will remain in Libya and in Yemen until the security situation becomes such that they are no longer needed.
18.20 (13.20) The Foreign Secretary has confirmed that all British and Sudanese staff at the embassy in Khartoum are safe. He says that the German embassy appears to have been the target of the attack and that some of the Germans took refuge in the British embassy during the violence.

As it is the Sudanese weekend very few staff were present in the Embassy. I am glad to say that all UK and Sudanese staff present during the attack are safe and that no injuries were sustained. All other UK staff in Khartoum are also accounted for.
The neighbouring German Embassy which appeared to be the focus of the attack was set on fire and severely damaged. We remained in close contact with the Germans throughout the incident and were able to offer shelter to German diplomats. I am very grateful for the close coordination with our German colleagues throughout this incident.
We have spoken to the Sudanese Ambassador in London and raised our serious concerns that this attack was able to take place. It is the responsibility of the Sudanese authorities to ensure that effective protection is provided to diplomatic premises at all times. I condemn in the strongest possible terms today’s attack and call on the Sudanese authorities to ensure that those involved are brought to justice.
This event is a reminder of the dangers that our diplomats around the world sometimes have to face.
18.02 (13.02) A little more about the Multinational Force & Observers (MFO) based in Sinai. There are 1,656 troops stationed at bases throughout the area. Twelve nations contributed soldiers to the force but the largest contingent is from the United States. Their mission is to monitor and enforce the 1979 peace agreement that ended the conflict between Israel and Egypt.

I've just spoken to Kamal Ben Younes, the director of a satellite TV channel in Tunis. He says that about 100 protesters managed to break into the secure car park of the US embassy, where they appear to have set a vehicle alight. In the traditional fashion, they also burned an American flag. But they failed to enter the embassy itself and there are no reports of any staff being harmed. The police on guard may have outnumbered the relatively modest crowd, which numbered 100 protesters as a "maximum".

17.15 (12.15) A team of 50 US marines from the Fleet Anti-terrorism Security Team has landed in Yemen to help defend the embassy there from any further attacks. While diplomats may be reassured by the arrival of heavily-armed American forces their deployment comes with a risk: any encounter in which US troops end up killing protesters could easily inflame the region all over again.
17.00 (12.00) Protesters have torched the American School in Tunis are fighting with riot police outside the US embassy. The school was closed and no one is believed to have been hurt. "Obama, Obama, we are all Osamas," the protesters chanted as they lit fires.

16.51 (11.51) Obama will attend a ceremony this afternoon for the repatriation of the remains of the four Americans killed in Libya. At the White House press briefing Jay Carney says that Fridays often lead to larger crowds and the US was anticipating trouble today. He says that Romney's "attempt to score political points has been both factually wrong and poorly-timed". He also denies a report in today's Independent that the US ignored warnings of threats against the Benghazi consulate. "There was no intelligence that in any way could have been acted on to prevent these attacks," Carney says.
16.32 (11.32) Indian police have arrested 86 people in Chennai after protesters attacked the US consulate and burned an effigy of Barack Obama. "They smashed the window panes, surveillance camera and tried to scale over the compound wall, but we dispersed them while exercising restraint," a senior police officer said.
16.25 (11.25) A crowd of around 200 is gathered in front of the US Embassy in London's Grovesnor Square and several American and Israeli flags have been burned.

Now at the official Muslim Brotherhood rally. The turn out is small - symbolic, even, no more than a couple of thousand. The Brotherhood has misplayed this crisis and left even its own supporters - let alone the rest of the world - confused as to where it stands.
There was a small procession of niqabi women carrying Islamic flags and chanting slogans however.
15.18 (10.18) One of the major fears for western governments was that Afghanistan could erupt into violent rioting, like the kind we saw earlier this year after copies of the Koran were accidentally burned by US troops. But so far Afghanistan has remained relatively quiet. A number of clerics used their Friday sermons to call for restraint.
15.11 (10.11) German Foreign Minister Guido Westerwelle convened a press conference in Berlin earlier and echoed the line given by Hillary Clinton in Washington: the film is reprehensible but no justification for violence. He also says Germany's diplomats were evacuated out of the embassy before the violence broke out.

I expressly condemn the attack on the German embassy in Khartoum and demand from the Sudanese authorities and government that the integrity and security of the embassy is restored.
I understand the fury in the Islamic world at the anti-Islamic hate video and I condemn this video, but this is no justification for violence and the storming of embassies or endangering of people’s lives. The video is unacceptable and hurts the feelings of millions of believers but this is no justification for violence.
15.06 (10.06) In Khartoum, the mob is apparently beginning to move en masse towards the heavily fortified American embassy on the outskirts of the capital. Some are on foot but others are piling into cars and buses.

People organised a big demonstration in the main square against the movie about Prophet Mohammed. There is a lot of Lebanese army troops around and snipers are on the building.
The Muslims here have a distrust of Christians because they say that the makers of the movie are Coptic in Egypt. Yesterday I saw many posters of the Pope lining the streets in Tripoli, but today protestor’s scratched his face off [the images]. It represents the anger of people here at the visit by the Pope. They don’t want him come, especially because of the movie. They say this is a war against Islam.

The German embassy in Khartoum is currently the target of attacks by violent demonstrators. The embassy staff are safe. The crisis cell at the foreign ministry (in Berlin) is meeting and is in contact with the embassy.
14.08 (09.08) A demonstrator has been killed and 25 people hurt after an angry crowd of Islamists set fire to a KFC restaurant in northern Lebanon. The crowd of 300 attacked on the US fast-food chain's outlet came as Pope Benedict XVI arrived in Lebanon for a three-day visit, calling for Christian-Muslim coexistence and attacking religious extremism.

Currently outside US Embassy in Cairo, where the police have replicated their successful tactic from last year's demonstrations outside the Interior Ministry of building a massive barricade of concrete blocks across the road to prevent protesters getting near.
Those in front are now conducting siege warfare - running up and hurling a continuous rain of stones over the top.
This is a core group of probably about 50 young men. There are a few hundred more supporters, and a few hundred onlookers, spectators perhaps.
Meanhile a larger crowd is gathering half a mile away on the other side of Tahrir Square for the official Muslim Brotherhood rally. (The road to the embassy leads off the south-west edge of the Square but is hidden from it behind the giant government building known as the Mugamma)

13.46 (08.46) Britain's embassy in Sudan is under attack from a crowd of around 5,000 protesters. It's not clear how many staff are inside or the extent of the damage but apparently Sudanese police are on the scene and trying to hold the mob back. The Foreign Office says: "We can confirm an ongoing demonstration outside the British Embassy in Khartoum. Sudanese police are at the scene".
The neighbouring German embassy in Khartoum has been badly damaged and protesters have ripped down the flag and replaced it with an Islamist banner.

13.37 (08.37) On the campaign trail yesterday, Mitt Romney backed away from his criticisms of the White House's handling of the Benghazi attack, preferring instead to steer the conversation towards the economy. But last night, Richard Williamson, one of his top foreign policy aides, marched straight back into the territory in an interview with the Washington Post.
Advisers to Mitt Romney on Thursday defended his sharp criticism of President Obama and said that the deadly protests sweeping the Middle East would not have happened if the Republican nominee were president.
“There’s a pretty compelling story that if you had a President Romney, you’d be in a different situation,” Richard Williamson, a top Romney foreign policy adviser, said in an interview. “For the first time since Jimmy Carter, we’ve had an American ambassador assassinated.”
Williamson added, “In Egypt and Libya and Yemen, again demonstrations — the respect for America has gone down, there’s not a sense of American resolve and we can’t even protect sovereign American property.”

Hundreds of youths fought police outside the US embassy in Cairo overnight and another demonstration gathered in Tahrir Square in the morning. The Muslim Brotherhood has called for a "million man march" in Egypt's capital after prayers on Friday. So far, however, there is no sign of large numbers gathering.
Still reeling from the killing of Chris Stevens, the ambassador to Libya, and three of his colleagues, Washington is trying to protect its diplomats from protests that have now taken place in six countries in the Muslim world. They were sparked by a YouTube film made in California that defames the Prophet Mohammed.
Aside from the killings in Libya, the most serious incidents have taken place in the Yemeni capital, Sanaa, where four people were killed and dozens injured outside the US embassy. Protesters were briefly able to scale the protective walls and enter the mission.

We cannot accept this type of aggression and attempt to sow discord. These irresponsible actions yield no good and draw attention away from real problems like the conflict in Syria, the fate of the Palestinians and the lack of stability in the Middle East.
The Egyptian people reject and oppose any pernicious attempts to offend the prophet of Islam. Everyone rejects this. Americans also reject these actions, President Obama told me.
12.15 (07.15) Pope Benedict XVI has arrived in Lebanon where he is making a three-day official visit despite the turmoil in neighbouring Syria and across the Middle East. On the flight from Rome he spoke to reporters and called for an end to the "grave sin" of weapons exports to Syria. He also hailed the Arab Spring as a "cry fro freedom", but said it must be tempered by religious tolerance. And he spoke out against religious fundamentalism, which he said was "always a falsification of religion".
12.05 (07.05) Protests have been reported as far as Qatar and in Indian-administered Kashmir but seem most serious in Yemen, where four people were killed yesterday.
Yemeni security forces fired warning shots and water cannon to disperse hundreds of protesters trying to reach the US embassy in Sanaa.
The protesters gathered about 500 metres away from the embassy compound calling for the expulsion of the US envoy in Sanaa as they burnt the American flag.
They were met by security forces who blocked all roads leading to the mission.
12.01 (07.01) Clashes between police and protesters continue in front of the US Embassy in Cairo, the scene of the first flare up of violence on Tuesday, AFP reports.

Egyptians angry at a film they said was blasphemous to Islam on Friday hurled stones at a line of police in Cairo blocking the route to the US embassy, where demonstrators climbed the walls and tore down the American flag earlier this week.
"God is greatest" and "There is no god but God", one group near the front of the clashes chanted, as police in riot gear fired tear gas and threw stones back in a street leading from Tahrir Square to the embassy nearby.
About 300 people had gathered to protest, some waving flags with religious slogans. State media reported that 224 people had been injured since Wednesday night. The initial protest, in which the embassy walls were scaled, took place on Tuesday.

This facility is often subject to indirect fire, but officials in Afghanistan say the damage that has resulted is far more severe than normal.

Army Major Martyn Crighton, a spokesman at ISAF's Joint Command, says the attack may still be ongoing.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu lectured Barack Obama in the Oval Office on the dangers facing the Jews back in May 2011.

But… Barack Obama won’t meet with Israeli leader Netanyahu over Iran row.

He’s going to be campaigning and on Letterman.

The White House has rejected a request by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to meet President Barack Obama in the United States this month, an Israeli official said on Tuesday, after a row erupted between the allies over Iran’s nuclear programme.

An Israeli official told Reuters on condition of anonymity that Netanyahu’s aides had asked for a meeting when he visits the United Nations this month, and “the White House has got back to us and said it appears a meeting is not possible. It said that the president’s schedule will not permit that”.

Netanyahu has met with Obama on all the Israeli leader’s U.S. trips since 2009.

Earlier today President Muhammad Morsi promised to sue the US filmmakers who produced a movie that insulted the prophet Mohammad.

UPDATE: Barack Obama told NBC tonight “I don’t think that we would consider (Egypt) an ally.”

(Maybe he should have thought about that before he threw Mubarak under the bus!)

CAIRO — From Tunis to Cairo to Jakarta, Indonesia, the Muslim world erupted in protests aimed at the United States on Friday as anger over a video that mocks the prophet Muhammad boiled over into assaults on embassies or demonstrations in nearly two dozen countries.
As governments struggled to contain a wave of fury in which U.S. embassy compounds in Sudan and Tunisia were broken into and others were targeted, the violence appeared to overwhelm whatever goodwill was built up during the Arab Spring, when the United States tried to support many countries’ efforts toward democracy and freedom.

American outposts in the Middle East are watching for new demonstrations over a movie that ridicules the prophet Muhammad. Protests have occurred in at least 10 nations since the first disturbances on Tuesday at the U.S. Embassy in Cairo, Egypt.

On Saturday morning, after four days of violent protests, hundreds of Egyptian security forces, some of them in plainclothes, pushed protesters out of Tahrir Square and made arrests, witnesses said. Security forces even tore down a massive image of the “Blind Sheikh” Omar Abdel Rahman, in U.S. prison for involvement in the 1993 World Trade Center bombing, that was put up by Salafist protesters shortly after the 2011 revolution.
The actions of the security forces were one of the first signs that Egyptian President Mohamed Morsi may be taking more concrete steps to tamp down protests since pressure has ramped up from the U.S. government in recent days. As of early afternoon in Cairo, the square was back to mostly normal, with nothing but the stench of tear gas and a massive concrete wall blocking an access road to the U.S. Embassy to mark days of protests.
In Sydney, riot police clashed with about 200 protesters at the U.S. Consulate as demonstrations spread to Australia, the Associated Press reported. Hundreds of protesters also gathered outside the American embassy in Damascus — which has been closed since February — on Saturday to protest the controversial video, according to the Syrian Arab News Agency (SANA).
On Friday, it was the freedom to target American-linked buildings that most defined the day, as many governments appeared to be taken by surprise at the strength of the protests. Not even KFC and Hardee’s were safe, with franchises in Tripoli, Lebanon, torched by protesters as security forces opened fire on them, killing at least one person.
It was impossible to know how many of the thousands of demonstrators who filled streets outside U.S. outposts were motivated by reports about the video — which was made under mysterious circumstances, apparently by individuals in California — and how many were venting anger at the United States for other reasons. A short clip has been available on the Internet for weeks but apparently did not generate much attention until it was subtitled in Arabic and sent to Egyptian journalists.
The vehemence and volatile nature of the protests in capital after capital — images of which were broadcast around the globe almost instantly via blogs, social media networks and cable news stations — were unmistakable.
Anti-U.S. protests spread to Afghanistan, Bahrain, Bangladesh, Britain, East Jerusalem, Egypt, India, Indonesia, Iran, Iraq, Malaysia, Pakistan, Qatar, Syria, Turkey, the West Bank and Yemen, according to U.S. officials and news reports, with many protesters chanting religious slogans and railing against the denigration of Islam in the obscure low-budget video.

Updated at 10 a.m. ET: A man purported to be a filmmaker involved with the anti-Islam video sparking violent unrest in the Middle East and North Africa was escorted by deputies from his Cerritos, Calif., home shortly after midnight Saturday morning, NBCLosAngeles.com reported.
Media and law enforcement had been staking out the home at the end of a cul de sac in the Southern California city for about 48 hours when Nakoula Besseley Nakoula emerged wearing a coat, hat, scarf and glasses.

L.A. County Sheriff’s Department spokesman Steve Whitmore confirmed to NBCLA that Nakoula, 55, was taken to the Cerritos sheriff’s station for interviewing by federal probation officers aimed at determining whether he violated the terms of his 5-year probation by uploading a video to the Internet.
"We are in an assist mode," he said.
Whitmore added that Nakoula, who has denied involvement in the film in a phone call to his Coptic Christian bishop, agreed to the interview prior to the deputies arriving at his home, that the move was "entirely voluntary" and the man was "very cooperative."

Deputies pulled up to the home around midnight, according to witnesses. The group left the home through the side gate because the front door was not working, Whitmore said. NBCLA went to the home earlier this week and saw the front door was missing a knob.
International protesters have cited the 15-minute video posted on the Internet called "The Innocence of Muslims" as a catalyst for their demonstrations in countries such as Libya, Tunisia and Egypt.

They say the piece is insulting to their religion as it depicts the Prophet Muhammad as a child molester and a thug. In Islam, all images of Muhammad are prohibited, let alone negative ones.
Nakoula has told the Associated Press he was not the director on the film, but rather a logistics manager. The film's mystery producer has been said to go by the pseudonym Sam Bacile.
A telephone number said to belong to Bacile, given to Reuters by U.S.-based Coptic Christian activist Morris Sadek who said he had promoted the film, was later traced back to a person who shares the Nakoula residence.
Clashes near the US embassy continued in Cairo while in Sudan, British and German embassies were both targeted. The violence continued for a second day in Yemen, with protesters burning American flags. NBC's Richard Engel reports.

Nakoula reportedly requested deputies step up patrols around his home Wednesday after media descended on the area. At the time, Whitmore told reporters there had been no disturbance or crime.

Early reports suggested the film prompted the attack on the U.S. Consulate in Libya that killed 14 people, including U.S. Ambassador Christopher Stevens, two former Navy SEALS who were providing security for Stevens, and information management officer Sean Smith.
But U.S. officials are also probing the possibility that Wednesday’s attack was planned and timed to coincide with the 11th anniversary of the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks.

A federal grand jury indictment in February 2009 charged Nakoula in an alleged bank fraud conspiracy. The indictment accused him and others of fraudulently obtaining the identities and Social Security numbers of bank customers at Wells Fargo and withdrawing $860 from bank branches in Cerritos, Artesia and Norwalk.
Nakoula pleaded no contest in 2010 and was ordered to pay more than $790,000 in restitution. He was also sentenced to 21 months in federal prison, but was released early. The terms of his parole included being barred from assuming aliases and using computers or the Internet for five years without approval from his probation officer.
Many records in the case remain sealed, but prosecutors sought a longer prison term and noted that he misused some of his own relatives' identities to open 600 fraudulent credit accounts.
Los Angeles County District Attorney spokeswoman Sandi Gibbons confirmed that Nakoula also served a year in jail after pleading guilty to possession of meth with the intent to manufacture in 1997.
U.S. officials have said authorities were not investigating the film project itself, and that even if it was inflammatory or led to violence, simply producing it cannot be considered a crime in the United States, which has strong free speech laws.
It could be difficult to establish a probation violation case against Nakoula. In the federal court system, the conditions of supervised release are geared toward the offense for which a defendant was found guilty and imprisoned.
In Nakoula's case, the offense was bank fraud. His no contest plea was to charges of setting up fraudulent bank accounts using stolen identities and Social Security numbers, depositing checks from those accounts into other phony accounts and then withdrawing the illicit funds from ATM machines.
While it was unclear what might have provoked authorities' interest, the filmmaker's use of a false identity and his access to the Internet through computers could be at issue, according to experts in cyber law and the federal probation system. Nakoula, who told the AP that he was logistics manager for the film, was under requirements to provide authorities with records of all his bank and business accounts.
There are indications that "Innocence of Muslims" may have already been under way as a film project when Nakoula was arrested. A casting call for actors and crew for a film called "Desert Warrior" ran in Backstage magazine, based in Los Angeles and New York, in May and June 2009. The casting call described the film project as a "historical Arabian Desert adventure" and listed a "Sam Bassiel" as producer.
One notice identified "Pharaoh Voice Inc."as the film's production company. California state records show Pharaoh Voice was incorporated in September 2007 by a "Youssef M. Basseley." The principal address for Pharaoh Voice in Hawaiian Gardens, a southern California community, is the same location where Nakoula lived until 2008, according to state records.
During an interview with AP, Nakoula denied that he was Sam Bacile, but acknowledged knowing him.

Stan Goldman, a Loyola Law School professor, said whether Nakoula is sent back to jail over potential probation violations linked to the film, such as accessing the Internet, was a subjective decision up to an individual judge.
"Federal judges are gods in their own courtrooms, it varies so much in who they are," he said, noting such a move would be based on his conduct not on the content of the film.

Ambassador Chris Stevens did not have a Marine detail in Benghazi, Libya. But White House Senior Advisor and Obama confidante Valerie Jarrett has a full Secret Service detail on vacation in Martha’s Vineyard, according to Democratic pollster Pat Caddell.

That’s the pathetic foreign policy of the Obama administration, says Caddell today in an exclusive interview with Breitbart News. “Jarrett seems to have a 24 hour, around the clock detail, with five or six agents full time,” Caddell explains. “The media has been completely uninterested. We don’t provide security for our ambassador in Libya, but she needs a full Secret Service security detail. And nobody thinks there’s anything wrong with this. And nobody in the press will ask. What kind of slavish stoogery are they perpetrating here?

“This country has reached the point of absurdity. There are people dead because we don’t have security details for them. But she’s privileged to have a full Secret Service detail on vacation?”

Busted!… State Department Scrubs Damning Memo From Website Following Deadly 9-11 Consulate Attacks

On Wednesday September 12, 2012 blogger Speak With Authority discovered that five days before 9-11, the US State Department sent out a memo announcing no credible security threats against the United States on the anniversary of 9-11.

The Overseas Security Advisory Council, who posted the memo, is part of the Bureau of Diplomatic Security under the U.S. Department of State.

The Obama Administration was warned three days before the 9-11 attack about the deteriorating security in Benghazi.

The deadly Islamist attack was carried out on the 11th anniversary of the 9-11 attacks on America and only three months after the same consulate was bombed.

CNN reported:

Three days before the deadly assault on the United States consulate in Libya, a local security official says he met with American diplomats in the city and warned them about deteriorating security.

Jamal Mabrouk, a member of the February 17th Brigade, told CNN that he and a battalion commander had a meeting about the economy and security.

He said they told the diplomats that the security situation wasn’t good for international business.

“The situation is frightening, it scares us,” Mabrouk said they told the U.S. officials. He did not say how they responded.

According to McClatchy Newspapers – Five contractors and three members of Libya’s 17th of February Brigade, a group formed during the first days of the uprising against Moammar Gadhafi and now considered part of Libya’s military, were protecting the perimeter of the compound at the time of the attack.
