    Default wx thread

Living in tornado alley I have seen more than one twister. This winter I experienced my first actual blizzard, other than Dairy Queen. Not near as much fun as DQ, in fact a little scary.

I am aware of the effect weather has on ham radio signals. Since there is no weather thread, if anyone has any info/questions maybe we could post them here.

Of course no weather thread would be complete without the age old question: What is the difference between partly cloudy and partly sunny?

    I always wondered:

At what elevation does fog become a cloud?

More importantly, when does a cloud become fog!

OK Rick - now you confused me.

Seriously - Luke, I'm not sure if you inteded to start a thread about how weather affects HAMs, or just weather in general.

Weather doesn't really affect radio signals all that much. Other than lightning strikes and so forth.

Thats not what we're talking about Peterle. HF, VHF, UHF. Satellite frequencies are in the gigahertz range and will be blocked by water in the air. And yes, snow covering a dish will completely stop a signal because the signals bounce off the snow in random directions and not focused by the dish.

But VHF, HF and UHF signals are NOT affected in the way they are talking about.

Mostly weather in general. From extremes to anomalies, to uncommon sense.

Just wanted to make sure Luke - especially as we were having a laugh.

    Are you a meteorologist, etc?

Trivia - I took a basic weather class in Miami - think it was called Climate 101 or something - about 30 years ago.

    The instructor?

    The son of Ansel Adams.

    Had a great time.

You might contact the local weather service office and ask about weather spotter classes, they are free.

I didnt go either. Too busy lately.

Probably wont go to another ever. lol

Spent the last 20 years attending one each year. They got shorter and shorter and the information got more and more dumbed down.

II have enough of a background now to do my own predictions, reading maps and so forth.

Storm chased for about 18 years. Done with that now too. Got what I need out of weather and looking forward to using my knowledge on a ship.

    /chuckles

Partly cloudy is when most of the sky is covered with clouds.

Partly sunny is when most of the sky isn't covered with clouds but enough to cover the sun from time to time.

Same here in Ohio... 87 on Tues, 88 Wed, and 83 Thurs.

I was just talking about this with a friend that owns a landscaping company about how it looks like we aren't getting our 2 weeks of spring this year. I told him I didn't get how he is able to do all the outdoor work involved in his business but, he has in fact confided in me that as he's gotten older he doesn't want to have to do all the field work he does and would much rather focus on back office stuff.

I was also telling him how much I have come to honestly hate the hot and humid weather during the summers here. I'd love nothing more than to be spending time enjoying the outdoors but it just gets unbearable. Air so thick it feels like you are suffocating! It's like, "Would I rather spend time replacing rear axle bearings on my quad in 90 degree heat and 90% humidity or, sit in my 68 degree AC and pop on a movie?" Hard choice that...

Can't wait to move out west to better climate!

These tornadoes are freakin crazy lately. Minnesota got hit with some last night, plus bad thunderstorms to go with it. No tornado in Savage, lots of rain and wind though and the power was out this morning, not sure how long because I fell asleep. Apparently North Minneapolis was hit pretty good, broke a liquor store window and looting ensued. A word of warning if any of you ever end up in North Minne, don't stop, don't make eye contact, get out as quick as you can. It is by far, hands down worst part of town there is. It's a real tragedy for the good people that do live there.
