Joe Biden likened tea partiers to terrorists

Vice President Joe Biden joined House Democrats in lashing tea party Republicans Monday, accusing them of having “acted like terrorists” in the fight over raising the nation’s debt limit, according to several sources in the room.

Biden was agreeing with a line of argument made by Rep. Mike Doyle (D-Pa.) at a two-hour, closed-door Democratic Caucus meeting.

“We have negotiated with terrorists,” an angry Doyle said, according to sources in the room. “This small group of terrorists have made it impossible to spend any money.”

Biden, driven by his Democratic allies’ misgivings about the debt-limit deal, responded: “They have acted like terrorists.”

Biden’s office initially declined to comment about what the vice president said inside the closed-door session, but after POLITICO published the remarks, spokeswoman Kendra Barkoff said: “The word was used by several members of Congress. The vice president does not believe it’s an appropriate term in political discourse.”

Biden later denied he used that term in an interview with CBS.

“I did not use the terrorism word,” Biden told CBS Evening News anchor and managing editor Scott Pelley.

Earlier in the day, Biden told Senate Democrats that Republican leaders have “guns to their heads” in trying to negotiate deals.

The vice president’s hot rhetoric about tea party Republicans underscored the tense moment on Capitol Hill as four party leaders in both chambers work to round up the needed votes in an abbreviated time frame. The bill would raise the debt limit by as much as $2.4 trillion through the end of next year and reduce the deficit by an equal amount over the next decade.

Democrats had no shortage of colorful phrases in wake of the deal.

Rep. Emanuel Cleaver (D-Mo.) called it a “Satan sandwich,” and Rep. Luis Gutierrez (D-Ill.) called seemed to enjoy the heat analogy, saying: “the Tea Partiers and the GOP have made their slash and burn lunacy clear, and while I do not love this compromise, my vote is a hose to stop the burning. The arsonists must be stopped.

The deal was consummated Sunday night, the text of the bill was posted in the wee hours of Monday morning, and the House was expected to vote first on it Monday afternoon or evening. But there are still plenty of concerns in both parties and in both chambers.

Liberal Democrats have had the most averse reaction to the plan, which ensures between $2.1 trillion and $2.4 trillion in deficit reduction over the next decade without requiring any of it to come from tax increases.

Biden told Democratic lawmakers that the deal would take away the tea party’s “weapon of mass destruction” — the threat of a default on U.S. debt obligations.

“They have no compunction about blowing up the economy to get what they want,” Doyle told POLITICO after the meeting.

    The tea party's terrorist tactics

    By: William Yeomans
    July 29, 2011 08:22 AM EDT

It has become commonplace to call the tea party faction in the Househostage takers.” But they have now become full-blown terrorists.

They have joined the villains of American history who have been sufficiently craven to inflict massive harm on innocent victims to achieve their political goals. A strong America has always stood firm in the face of terrorism. That tradition is in jeopardy, as Congress and President Barack careen toward an uncertain outcome in the tea party- manufactured debt crisis.

As we stumble closer to Aug. 2, it has become clear that many in the tea party are willing to inflict massive harm on the American people to obtain their political objective of a severely shrunken federal government. Their persistence in rejecting compromise, even as the economic effects of the phony crisis they have created mount, has taken their radicalism beyond tough negotiating, beyond even hostage-taking.

As markets fall in anticipation that there may not be a timely resolution; as credit agencies issue dire warnings that the U.S. political system has become so dysfunctional that a credit downgrade may be inevitable, and as America looks weakened in the eyes of the world, the tea party’s hostage-taking has evolved into the intentional infliction of harm on innocent Americans to achieve a political objective – terrorism.

Terrorism is a tough term, but, unfortunately, it describes tea party tactics precisely. Their first step was to vow not to vote to raise the debt ceiling.
Here, as in many radical factions, there was a split between the purists and the pragmatists. Pragmatists vowed not to raise the ceiling unless draconian cuts were made in the federal government.

Purists didn’t bother with an “unless.” They, including presidential candidate Rep. Michele Bachman (R-Minn.), were willing to let the entire edifice come crashing down — hiding behind magical thinking that allowed them to deny that anything horrible would happen if the ceiling were not raised.

Out of this vow grew the phony linkage between raising the debt ceiling and addressing the deficit. Raising the debt ceiling, of course, has nothing to do with addressing the deficit. It simply allows the federal government to pay debts that have already been incurred, based on expenditures that Congress has already authorized.

It lets the federal government pay its bills – an act of basic responsibility that every American — conservative and liberal — should embrace. Raising the ceiling is a pro forma act that Congress has performed repeatedly through Republican and Democratic administrations. Every president – from Ronald Reagan to Bill Clinton – has labeled failure to raise it unthinkable, because to do so would be to intentionally inflict harm on America.

The harm is, in part, unknowable because we have always resisted any temptation to run the experiment of failing to raise the ceiling. Even if the federal government could avoid default on its loan obligations for an uncertain time, the harm would be immense. The president would have to prioritize federal expenditures, choosing whether to send Social Security checks, pay federal employees ranging from FBI agents to food inspectors to troops in the field, make Medicare payments, provide for veterans, collect taxes and on and on.

Even in the absence of default, credit agencies would almost surely downgrade our credit worthiness, producing increases in interest rates that would slow the economy, increase unemployment and force families into foreclosure and bankruptcy.

As the markets dropped, families would watch their retirement and education savings and their dreams disappear.

Rather than reject the unthinkable, the tea party harnessed this potential harm as its weapon of mass destruction.

For pragmatists, it allowed a hostage-taking. The pragmatists threatened to defeat a raise in the debt ceiling unless Congress and President Barack Obama rejected taxes on the wealthy and accepted budget cuts that would move the country toward the tea party’s idealized vision of an America. Their dream is an alternate version of the United States — before the New Deal, the Great Society and civil rights laws alleviated massive inequality and injustice — and extended American opportunity.

The tea party faction could not achieve these goals through straight up democratic means because of their unpopularity. So it resorted to its threat of mass destruction. They were able to do so because they formed a disciplined bloc that gave them leverage over the House leadership and because of the threat that members who did not go along would face primary challenges from the right.

Hard-core tea party members were empowered by their oft-repeated disdain for reelection. They were liberated to pursue their radical course because they were freed from the traditional constraint on members of Congress, imposed by the need to face the voters.

Their goals were also served by the Republican Party’s success in selling the notion that the country faces an urgent debt crisis. Nearly every economist agrees that we face a long-term debt problem, but there is no reason it must be addressed by Aug. 2.

The concern that our credit may be downgraded if we don’t enact an immediate debt reduction plan is driven almost entirely by the loss of credibility in our political system — engendered by the phony frenzy surrounding the debt ceiling legislation.

While most economists agree that we need to address long-term debt issues, many recognize that our immediate crisis is high unemployment and economic stagnation, conditions that will most likely be exacerbated by sucking hundreds of billions of dollars out of the economy in the short-term.

The challenge for America is to stand firm in the face of terrorism, no matter the source.

Tea party members must reassess their distorted vision of patriotism and join true patriots in Congress in raising the debt ceiling promptly until 2013, without inflicting further economic harm on already struggling Americans.

The president should insist on a clean debt ceiling bill, Congress should get it to him — as it has dozens of times in the past — and the president should sign it promptly. So the nation can get on with addressing the truly significant problems that it faces.

William Yeomans, an American University law professor, served as Sen. Ted Kennedy’s chief counsel on the Senate Judiciary Committee and as a Justice Department official.

Palin, Bachmann blast Biden for alleged "terrorist" comment

    By Lucy Madison

    Former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin.

    Updated: 12:32 p.m. ET

Presidential candidate Michele Bachmann and possible presidential candidate Sarah Palin lambasted Vice President Joe Biden Monday night for negative comments he allegedly made about the Tea Party.

Biden was reported by Politico on Monday to have agreed with an argument by Rep. Mike Doyle of Pennsylvania, who apparently asserted that "[w]e have negotiated with terrorists" during a closed-door meeting with House Democrats about the deal to raise the debt limit.

"They have acted like terrorists," Biden was said to have responded.

The Hill reports that in an e-mail Monday night, Bachmann, R-Minn., condemned Biden's alleged statement and called on the vice president to apologize.

"Only in the bizarro world of Washington is fiscal responsibility sometimes defined as terrorism," wrote the Tea Party favorite, according to the Hill.
And in a Monday night appearance on Fox News, former Alaska Governor Sarah Palin said it was "vile" to use the word terrorist in reference to politicians who were "taking a stand."

"We're getting kind of used to being called names. You know, racists and inciters of violence, and being accused with things we have nothing to do with," Palin told Fox News' Greta Van Susteren. "But I suppose it's a bit more appalling to have been called acting like terrorists today from he who is in second in command of the most powerful office in the world. It's quite appalling and cert proves how out of touch this White House is what it comes to realizing what the silent majority of Americans are seeing and feeling."

"What we're feeling is that growing more debt isn't going to get us out of debt and raising taxes in a down economy is a bad idea, and we're taking a stand in light of those," she continued. "And so to be called a terrorist because of our beliefs from the vice president, it's quite appalling. It's quite vile."

(Incidentally, Palin has lobbed the "terrorist" claim against her own political opponents in the past: In 2008, she accused President Obama -- then the democratic nominee for president -- of "palling around" with terrorists. Palin was referring in her comments to William Ayers, a former member of the radical Weathermen group, who served on education boards with Mr. Obama in Chicago. But reports indicated that Mr. Obama and Ayers were not close.)

In a Monday interview with CBS News' Scott Pelley, however, Biden denied the allegations that he compared Tea Party members to terrorists.
"I did not use the terrorism word," he said.
A spokesperson for Biden added on Tuesday that Biden "does not believe it's an appropriate term in political discourse."

"The word was used by several members of Congress," said Biden spokesperson Kendra Barkoff. "The vice president does not believe it's an appropriate term in political discourse."

Biden told Pelley he let lawmakers "vent" about the deal, which the House passed Monday night and which will head to the Senate today. But he says he did not agree with the terrorism comparison.

"What happened was there were some people who said they felt like they were being held hostage by terrorists," he said. "I never said that they were terrorists or weren't terrorists, I just let them vent."

"I said even if that were the case, what's been happening when you now have taken and paid the debt and move that down so we can now discuss, the nuclear weapon's been taken out of anyone's hands," he added.

    Biden: Republicans, “Acted Like Terrorists”

The media should be destroying Joe Biden right now. There should be a countdown clock on his resignation.

The Vice-President of the United States of America said that tea party Republicans “acted like terrorists” during the recent budget and debt ceiling discussions.

Where’s the “wall to wall” stories, live shots, commentary and demand of accountability here?

    Terrorists.

This administration doesn’t call terrorists, terrorists.

Biden has denied making the comments, but Politico is sticking by its story, they also say Pennsylvania Democrat Mike Doyle used the same phrase.

In this post 9/11 world it’s unthinkable that the White House would so blatantly attack its own citizens by using that phrase. Terrorists killed my son’s high school language teacher on the Flight 77 that was forced in to the Pentagon. I drive by the memorial for Barbara Edwards at least 2 or 3 times a day and there is not a time that I go by that I do not recall those horrific attacks of that day.

Personal note here to Biden: I can get creative with words, Joe, but unlike you, I am not a plagiarist. I can think of a lot of things to call you right now, and if you ever have the pleasure of meeting me, I will use them. For now, you can use your imagination. You are not worth getting into a pissing match with.

These are fellow American that Joe Biden is calling terrorists. You and me. In using that phrase towards Republicans in Congress, Biden uses it against each of us who called for Representatives who would vote for fiscal responsibility in Washington DC and not blow our money and lead to Homeland Insecurity.

Personal note to the media: Where the hell are you on this? You patronize by your silence. I’m waiting for one of you to refer to this a just another Biden “gaffe.” Enablers. You have made careers out of trying to destroy Michelle Bachman and Sarah Palin, but you will find no story here. Speak truth to power. You don’t get much more powerful than the White House.

    Bob Woodward, where are you?

Biden’s words should be additional motivation to elect people to power who understand that government will not control its spending. A Constitutional amendment is the only solution. We must put people in power who understand that and vote the others out. That’s you, Joe.

If President Obama wants to try to distance himself from his VP’s comments, he can’t, they fit with some of the brutal things he has said about his political opponents. “If they bring a knife, we bring a gun,” Obama told a crowd of supporters in Philadelphia in 2008. Remember that one?

That would be you and me that he is talking about there. To this White House we are terrorists and firearms are to be used against us. What else can you extrapolate from all of this? I challenge anybody to come up with an Executive Branch in this country that has been more brutal in the words they use against political opponents. We act like terrorists.

This is the “Great Uniter” who called for a new civility during the tragic shootings in Tucson.

Later this year, Biden and Obama will lead the ceremonies on the 10th year since 9/11. There will be tears, there will be memorials, there will be speeches. “Never forget” has been this nation’s motto since that tragic day, and that phrase will be heard again this September. No, we won’t forget what happened that day. My son and his classmates won’t forget their teacher who died on that day. To Biden, your words this day will not be forgotten either.

UPROAR BUILDS Over Joe Biden’s Tea Party “Terrorist” Remarks

Posted by Jim Hoft on Tuesday, August 2, 2011, 5:40 AM

Gov Palin's 8/01/2011 interview with Greta Van Susteren

Uproar continued to build yesterday after it was reported that Vice President Joe Biden said that tea party Republicans were acting like terrorists.

    FOX News reported:
Vice President Biden was criticized Monday over reports of a private meeting he had with House Democrats in which Tea Party Republicans were compared to “terrorists,” though Biden denies he described Republicans that way.

A senior Democratic official told Fox News that Biden made such comments in reaction to a heated conversation with liberal House members like Rep. Mike Doyle, D-Pa., who were venting that Republicans got too much out of the debt ceiling deal unveiled the night before and “acted like terrorists.”

The comment drew an immediate rebuke from Sen. Rand Paul, R-Ky., one of the most outspoken Tea Party-aligned lawmakers in Congress.

“With the president holding the American economy hostage, I would prefer to think of myself as a Freedom Fighter,” Paul said in a statement, calling the remarks “insulting.”

But the Democratic official stressed that Biden made the comment to move the conversation along. According to the official, Biden added that despite the Republicans’ behavior, “we got a lot out of this deal.”

The vice president’s office also downplayed the quote.

“The word was used by several members of Congress. The vice president does not believe it’s an appropriate term in political discourse,” Biden spokeswoman Kendra Barkoff said.
And these are the same people that lecture conservatives about a new tone.

    Disgusting.

UPDATE: Michele Bachmann emailed supporters late Monday night to ask them to sign a petition demanding an apology from Biden.

Democrat cries those Tea Party Terrorist won't let us spend more money. Joe Biden agrees Tea Party are Terrorist

    Mon, 08/01/2011 - 10:00pm

And there you have it folks. That sentence sums it up right nicely.

The quote is from Representative Mike Doyle here is the actual quote in his own words.

“We have negotiated with terrorists,” angry Rep. Mike Doyle, a Democrat from PA, said, according to sources who were in the room. “This small group of terrorists have made it impossible to spend any money.”

    Biden agreed:

Biden, driven by his Democratic allies’ misgivings about the debt-limit deal, responded: “They have acted like terrorists,” according to several sources in the room.

If there has ever been a better example of the differences between the Progressives and Liberals and Republicans and Conservatives I can't find one.

Tea Party Conservatives holding the Republicans feet to the fire on spending dragging them along for the ride and the Democrats wailing and moaning that they can't spend more of our tax dollars.

Here is the problem this deal does NOTHING but raise spending. They used phony gimmick numbers, one of which was that they projected a 2% growth in GDP. Just where did they pull that number out of? Their arse?

If the GDP fails to reach that golden 2% growth by just 1% it would add $6-7 Trillion dollars in debt almost overnight. So instead of $17 Trillion in debt it would more likely to be $23-24 Trillion.

We would become Greece in all but in name.

This deal seals Americas fate. We are on the road to destruction with no room for u-turns. We are going to lose our AAA rating and the dollar is going to crash. It's been real and it's been fun, but not real fun.

Will the last one out turn off the lights please.......Thanks.

The Left has figured out they can't use "racist" any more. Everyone is on to them. So lets get even more outlandish and call them "terrorists".

You see, they do this in an attempt to discredit good, patriotic Americans.

The Tea Party consists of people who are normal, every day citizens who are SICK of Liberals (and even Conservatives) who believe themselves the rules of common people.

They are NOT my ruler and I'll gladly stand with the Tea Party.

Call me anything you like - but don't Tread On Me.

    I had to re-read that.

I thought you said "I finally agree with you Rick" lol

I was thinking "About time!" hahahaha

IF the weather holds out, I have to work on the boat this afternoon. I'm trying like hell to get it to the lake on Friday to take my wife sailing. It's out anniversary on Friday (34 years) and I promised her a nice glass of wine on the lake.

If I get the chance, I'll take a picture of one of the flags I fly hoisted up on the mast.

Now Rick, if you knew what the so called 'scholars' say here in Brazil about the Tea Party you would be VERY MAD.

They call it 'Far-Right' and other names I wouldn't say it. It's shameful to see how much they don't understand and don't even TRY to understand about this movement. And the worse is that they are teachers.

Do you believe that! It's terrible.

Actually, they are informed by a misinformation media.

In TRUTH, the "Tea Party" (which stands for "Taxed Enough Already") is a take off of the "Boston Tea Party" - men who were incensed at the exhortation tariffs being placed on tea and other commodities. Essentially, the Boston people threw the tea overboard off ships because of a thing called "The Tea Act".

This new Tea Party is akin to that. Americans are TIRED of being over taxed for things they buy, sell or even for their income. And also in fact, the Tea Party is not made up of "Far Right" people. In fact, the "Far Right" are the "Religious Right" and folks who are even to me scary.

The Tea Party make up is not Far Right at all, but plenty of moderate Americans on both the Democratic and Republican parties. I've talked to people from both sides, independents and even a lot of folks like Ron Paul (a Libertarian).

The Huffington Post (a VASTLY LEFT WING group) will tell you that this is "Old GOP" running it. This is a LIE.

A much more honest and unbiased group is a Gallup Poll. http://www.gallup.com/poll/127181/te...ographics.aspx

    April 5, 2010

Tea Partiers Are Fairly Mainstream in Their Demographics

Skew right politically, but have typical profile by age, education, and employment

    by Lydia Saad

    Page: 12

PRINCETON, NJ -- Tea Party supporters skew right politically; but demographically, they are generally representative of the public at large. That's the finding of a USA Today/Gallup poll conducted March 26-28, in which 28% of U.S. adults call themselves supporters of the Tea Party movement.
Tea Party supporters are decidedly Republican and conservative in their leanings. Also, compared with average Americans, supporters are slightly more likely to be male and less likely to be lower-income.
In several other respects, however -- their age, educational background, employment status, and race -- Tea Partiers are quite representative of the public at large.
A Uniformly Negative Reaction to Health Bill
Over the past year, Tea Party movement activists -- originally kindled by grass-roots opposition to the economic stimulus bill and taxpayer bailouts of homeowners -- came out strongly against the Democrats' national healthcare reform plans. That stance is evident in the latest USA Today/Gallup poll, in which 87% of Tea Party supporters -- versus 50% of all Americans -- say they consider passage of healthcare reform a bad thing.
While opposition to the healthcare bill is perhaps the most distinctive characteristic of Tea Party supporters in the new poll, their views on abortion are also notable. Nearly two-thirds consider themselves "pro-life" on the abortion issue, compared with 46% of all national adults.
More generally, a separate question included in the March 26-28 poll showed that 37% of Americans view the Tea Party movement favorably and 40% unfavorably, with the remainder expressing no opinion. Predictably, Republicans and conservatives are most likely to have favorable opinions.
    Survey Methods
Results are based on telephone interviews with 1,033 national adults, aged 18 and older, conducted March 26-28, 2010. For results based on the total sample of national adults, one can say with 95% confidence that the maximum margin of sampling error is ±4 percentage points.
Interviews are conducted with respondents on land-line telephones (for respondents with a land-line telephone) and cellular phones (for respondents who are cell-phone only).
In addition to sampling error, question wording and practical difficulties in conducting surveys can introduce error or bias into the findings of public opinion polls.

From the above, you can see that Joe Biden is not only wrong, he's a liar. He is attempting to discredit the Tea Party with Americans who are mostly on the left side of politics.

Leftists want socialism in this country now. Right wingers don't want it.

People who are in the middle want to be left ALONE.

Thanks Rick. I understand now the Tea Party Movement and is great that this movement appeared in US.

My only hope is that in Brazil too appear a movement like the Tea Party also...

When it's time to vote here, I'm feel helpless because I wouldn't vote for PT (Workers Party) or PSDB (Social Democrat Brazilian Party).

Here's a relatively unbiased link to the real story of the original "Boston Tea Party" and why it happened:

    http://www.eyewitnesstohistory.com/teaparty.htm

pay very close attention to this line: "However, if the colonies paid the duty tax on the imported tea they would be acknowledging Parliament's right to tax them."

Several other sites I glanced at had the "British" version/point of view, as well as a most leftist point of view in that the tax actually HELPED Colonists and they were stupid to do what they did.

As it turns out, the Boston Tea Party was one of the factors that precipitated the American Revolutionary War (among a few other things that brought the conflict to the forefront).

The American Tea Party is the new Revolution - whether folks wish to believe so or not.

The real first shots have been fired in this Revolution and we're in the middle of it now. No, there's no gun fire, no bombs or rockets' red glare, and no one is dying. Not yet.

And that's the point. With people like Mr. Biden making outlandish claims against folks like me and others that we are terrorists, he is inadvertently setting a stage for things to come. None of us are terrorists, and I for one am an an American Fighting man. I've sworn to uphold the Constitution. The more they try to rip it down, the madder people like myself get.

The day is coming for elections. That election will be telling.

The left will try to write it off as a fluke, but the world - places like Russia, China and other communists will see the writing on the wall. America is NOT dead, we won't DIE and we're NOT going to let Communism get a greater foot hold in this country.

Many people will simply go on with life, as they did in the First American Revolution, as though everything is normal. Some will be mad the leftists lost, some will be happy. For the most part, a great majority of Americans won't even blink.

America IS a stand up country BRVoice. We are an OUTSTANDING place to live, and we're special. No, that is not to say that Brazil isn't special in their own way. But we're a young country and before us no other country had the beliefs this country has held for the last two hundred years.

Few countries have yet to emulate us. Those that have are still having problems.

Now we're having problems. Why? Because Leftists have tried to push us down and anti-capitalism road, to fight against individual freedoms, to force men and women in this country into a sort of serfdom that hasn't existed anywhere for a hundred years, except in Muslim countries and third world nations.

The Left wants Americans to be slaves to the government... and I'm stating loudly and clearly, Mr. Biden, you may call me a Terrorist, you may threaten our livelihood in this country with regulations and rules and agencies and bureaucracy, but you will never, EVER stop America from being the great country she truly is. And you will never stop Americans and individuals from remaining individuals.

I have never figured out why Joe Biden is on the ticket with BO? Maybe he has more money than he reports? No matter why Joe is in my opinion one of the worst VP's we have had to endure for quite a long time. Not the sharpest knife in the drawer.

Federalist and Whigs, I think we are seeing the birth of a new conservative political party. It may be a good thing if BOTH the democrats and gop go the way of the dinosaur.

As for the terrorists remark, I was taught that it is a sign of weakness to resort to name calling as a child. Maybe I am wrong but I still remember and believe that lesson.

On a side note congratulation to Mrs. Donaldson on 34th anniversary.
