On Alaska Day, Russians Still Dream of Getting Alaska Back

Proposal to trade Crimea for 'return' of U.S. state

As in the U.S., the attention given to Alaska Day—October 18—in Russia doesn’t rise to the level of the national front page news. So far, it is not an official holiday in Russia—but, who knows, maybe that’s about to change.

This year, on Sailors Square in the town of Yevpatoria, Crimea—which Russia snatched from Ukraine more than two years ago—a small but sturdy red-bricked monument with a message to future generations of Russians was built. The monument is named “For the Edification of Posterity” and the inscription on it reads: “WE HAVE RETURNED CRIMEA, YOU ARE TO RETURN ALASKA.” Silhouettes of both Crimea and Alaska are engraved.

Shocked tourists, upon confronting the memorial, at first do not believe their eyes—but then begin taking selfies.

The U.S. purchase of Alaska from Russia in 1867 has been engulfed by conspiracy theories since the days of Soviet history textbooks that blamed Russian czars for every inch of Russian land lost to hostile outsiders. Disregarding the facts, one popular belief is that the Alaska purchase was a top-secret, “under the table” deal between corrupt Russian officials and Washington. By this logic, Alaska was not sold to the U.S. for $7.2 million in gold, but rather given under the terms of a 100-year lease. The theory here is that the American gold never reached the Russian treasury but drowned under mysterious circumstances in the ocean on its way to Russia—and the contract was not in Russian and never included the the word “sale.”

Last year, Russian TV released a documentary entitled “When Will Alaska Become Ours?”—arguing that, because Russia received only a meager portion of the promised $7.2 million for Alaska, the deal must be declared null and void.

Like the Japanese, who haven’t lost hope of regaining control over the Kuril Islands that were lost to Russia after WWII, Russian popular belief holds that Alaska is not really American, and there is a chance to have it back one day. (Vladimir Putin is set to visit Japan in December, and the islands will be first among topics to be discussed. Unlike Japan, though, Russia yet does not have her “Northern Territories Day” with regards to Alaska.)

Pop culture confirms the claim.

The hit song by Russian pop group “Lyube” was entitled “Do Not Fool with Us, America!”—of course, about Alaska. “Do not fool with us, America!” sings the band. “The czars were wrong! Russia and Alaska are two banks of the same river! Give back our dear land, dear Alaska, give it back to us!” In the video, Alaska is taken from the U.S. at gunpoint.

Lyube is rumored to be one of Putin’s favorite pop groups—the frontman, Nikolai Rastorguyev, received awards for merit and honor from Putin for his patriotic songs.

“We should have returned Alaska a long time ago!” sings Mashany, a performer from the Siberian city of Novosibirsk. She was virtually unknown until her hit, which trashes the dollar and demands Alaska be returned.



Maybe she, too, will be awarded by Putin.

The conviction in Russian claims on Alaska starts from childhood. In the Ural city of Chelyabinsk this summer, middle school students enacted a promise to “return” Alaska to Russia one day. The performance followed a Japanese samurai dreaming of getting Kuril Islands back to Japan from Russia. At one point, a boy covering his face with Putin’s mask appeared and, skillfully copying the sarcastic tone of the Russian President, asked the samurai, “But who will give them back to you?”—to the laughter and applause of the students. “I will be frank,” little Putin continued, “we do not need other people’s land, we take back what belongs to us. We took back Crimea. Alaska is next. And I do not want to hear about Kuril Islands anymore!”

More applause ensues and the samurai commits hara-kiri.



Some of the evidence Russians use to defend their claim to Alaska is strange, to say the least. When Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin became famous for her words—which she never quite said—that she could see Russia from her house, her second name resonated in Russia because “Palin” resembles a phrase of Russian origin that means “one who lit a fire.” Palin’s husband also has Russian blood—therefore, Alaska is Russian!

There are signs that Putin shares these beliefs.

Two and a half years ago, during his yearly televised conference call with the Russian people, Putin was asked, “Are there plans to unite Alaska with Russia? We [Russians] would be very happy.” (The question was inspired by the recent acquisition of Crimea.)

“Do you know that there is a joke calling Alaska ‘Ice Cream,’ Vladimir Vladimirovich?” an eager sycophantic moderator played to the joy of the audience. When said with strong Russian accent, “ice cream” sounds like “iced Crimea.”

Putin appreciated both the joke and the question. “Yes, I know [about the joke],” he said. “My dear caller, why do you need Alaska? Although we sold Alaska to the United States for a song, we [Russia] are the Northern country. Seventy percent of our territory today is located in regions of the North and Far North. Alaska is not in the Southern hemisphere. It is also cold there. Let’s not be hot-tempered. [If we unite Alaska with Russia] we will have to pay Northern subsidies [to the local Alaskans], we will have to account for extra expenses,” joked the president to the amusement of his audience.



But, at least for now, realists prevail in Russia. On October 19, the Federal News Agency of Russia poured cold water on the popular aspirations: “America will never return Alaska to Russia, that’s a fact, and nothing can be done about it.”

Why do western folks marvel at this strange stare by the Russian Bear?



Make no mistake, the Russian bear wants Alaska back.

Not as a colony, but part of Russia for their people.

That is the last place I'd want to be when the war Russia has been planning for decades with America breaks out.

Some areas of the CONUS with undesirables will be left to ripen, unless it as an urgent strategic value to the leading members of the invading forces.

What does that mean?

Lets just say Alaska will be the first state Russia penetrates and clears intact for immediate re-population after Russia's surgical first strike on the CONUS.

On CNN's State of the Union with Candy Crowley, Nancy Pelosi tried unsuccessfully to bat away all of Obama's foreign policy failures, and actually said with a straight face that Obama is a strong leader. A minute later, with botox still courageously holding that face still, she said that Putin is just acting out of insecurity.

Ironically, if Putin really is just insecure about the place of Russia in the world, Obama seems to be just fine with our diminished and humiliated place in the world that he's orchestrating.

Also don't you love that response, "Yo, Candy, y'know what? A Putin's gonna putin, y'know what I'm sayin?"

War Peril looms as Obama/Clinton Russia ‘Reset’ Policy in Ruins

Potentially the single biggest threat to our well-being is the threat of war with nuclear-armed Russia, a threat that Barack Obama airily dismissed in a presidential debate with Mitt Romney four years ago, when the challenger named Russia as a foreign policy threat:



Then there was the cringe-worthy “reset button” photo op of Hillary and the Russian Foreign Minister, with his middle digit artfully extended toward Herself.

Well, it is all falling apart. Russia has unilaterally scrapped its disarmament deal with the US:[INDENT] Russian President Vladimir Putin on Monday ordered a halt to an agreement with the United States on plutonium disposal, citing Washington’s “unfriendly actions”.

The deal, signed in 2000, was meant to allow both nuclear powers to dispose of weapons-grade plutonium from their defense programs, a move seen as a key step in the disarmament process....

Russia announced large-scale Arctic war-games in 2019

Moscow is ramping up its claims to the rapidly melting Arctic, with a major military exercise involving ships, tanks and aircraft.

The Arctic is heating up. And it’s not just due to climate change. The appearance of new shipping lanes and access to once isolated resources as the ice retreats has Moscow racing to stake its claims.

According to the Russian Ministry of Defence, it will demonstrate its ability to exercise its military might in the northern frontier in August-September.
The Tsentr-2019 exercise will bring together Russia’s Northern Fleet, Pacific Fleet and Central Military District in what it calls a “serious test of the battle capacities of the Arctic troops”.



FIRE AND ICE
In 2018, Russian and Chinese forces combined in a rare display of co-ordinated firepower in the northern regions of Siberia and Mongolia. More than 300,000 troops, 36,000 tanks and 1000 aircraft took part.

The exact scale of the Tsentr-2019 exercise is not yet certain. But Moscow says it will be among the year’s biggest, and the scale of the operation requires the expansion and updating of existing northern port infrastructure.



Russian state-controlled news service Izvestia reports the exercise will be held between the Novaya Zemlya and New Siberian Islands, covering a large swath of the count ry’s north. It is intended to put a range of new weaponry through its paces to determine the impact of the cold, wet conditions, including air-defence missiles, armoured vehicles, all-terrain vehicles and support equipment.



As the exercise takes place during the northern hemisphere summer, conditions for ground troops practising combat inside the Arctic Circle will not be pleasant, Isvesta quotes a military expert as saying. The melting, loose ice turns the region into a swamp.

“But in the Arctic, divisions and armies do not fight,” he said. “Summer and the beginning of autumn are the most favourable time for the fleet, since the waters of the coastal seas will be without ice.”

Isvesta says some 500 new military facilities have been built in the Arctic region during the past four years.

POWER PUSH
Moscow has also announced plans to continue building-up its permanent military presence in the Arctic over the next year.

The announcement comes after years of increased activity in the Arctic, which Moscow has declared a top priority due to its mineral riches and military importance.

“We’ll finish building infrastructure in 2019 to accommodate air defence radar units and aviation guidance points on the Sredny and Wrangel Islands, and on Cape Schmidt” in the Russian Arctic, Defence Minister Sergei Shoigu said.

He said accommodation for military personnel and further aviation infrastructure had been completed elsewhere in the Arctic, at a defence ministry meeting also attended by President Vladimir Putin.



Russia has opened a string of military and scientific bases in the Arctic in recent years, with interest in the region growing as rising temperatures open up shipping routes and make hitherto inaccessible mineral resources easier to exploit.

Putin has made several trips to the Arctic and last year said further exploration and extraction of raw materials from the area was “extremely important”.

NATO this year held its biggest military exercises since the end of the Cold War near Russia’s Arctic border with Norway. Finland accused Moscow of jamming GPS signals in the region during the manoeuvres.

At a Victory Day military parade this year, Moscow displayed a new snowmobile used by Arctic units.
