Bill Cosby: It’s guns, not race in Trayvon Martin case

WASHINGTON — Actor and comedian Bill Cosby says the debate over the killing of Trayvon Martin by a neighborhood watch volunteer should be focused on guns, not race.

In an interview on CNN’s “State of the Union” aired Sunday, Cosby said calling George Zimmerman a racist doesn’t solve anything. Cosby says the bigger question is what Zimmerman was doing with a gun, and who taught him how to behave with it.

Martin, 17, was shot in February. Cosby said during the interview, which was taped Thursday afternoon, that he once owned a gun but no longer does. He says there is a need to get guns off the streets, and that people should be taught to use every possible alternative before shooting someone.

George Zimmerman's attorney to file motion for judge recusal

Attorney Mark O'Mara says Judge Jessica Recksiedler has conflict of interest

Published On: Apr 16 2012 12:22:33 PM EDT Updated On: Apr 16 2012 12:48:48 PM EDT

Zimmerman to file for change in judges
SANFORD, Fla. - The attorney for George Zimmerman, the neighborhood watchman who shot and killed Trayvon Martin, is expected to file a motion on Monday for the judge to recuse herself from the case because of a possible conflict of interest.
Attorney Mark O'Mara said he plans to file the motion for Circuit Court Judge Jessica Recksiedler to recuse herself as soon as possible so a new judge could possibly be appointed by Zimmerman's Friday bond hearing.
O'Mara became Zimmerman's attorney after being recommended by attorney Mark NeJame, who was contacted by Zimmerman's family. Recksiedler's husband, Jason Recksiedler, works at NeJame's law firm. Recksiedler has been a judge for nine months and was chosen out of a lottery to oversee the trial.
At a status hearing Friday, Recksiedler asked for the motion to be filed before the Friday bond hearing.
"If you choose to file a motion to disqualify me as judge, it has to be filed in writing for me to address it," Recksiedler said. "If you do choose to file, we do have a bond hearing set for next Friday," she said, asking that the motion be filed before then.
Zimmerman, a 28-year-old neighborhood watch leader, shot and killed Martin, 17, in late February. Zimmerman claims the shooting was in self-defense, but state prosecutors say he profiled the teen and was the aggressor in the shooting.
Zimmerman was not immediately arrested because police said there was no evidence to refute his claim of self-defense.
Florida's "stand your ground" law came under fire, and the lack of an arrest in the shooting prompted marches, rallies and protests across the country.

I'm posting this here... because it's in Florida... and I don't know yet if there is a connection.

But, rather than start another thread, I'll put it here. I'll remove it later if we get information that this can't be connected. Sanford is a suburb of Orlando (on the NE side of Orlando) and I-4 runs right through both areas.....

Maitland is a few miles SW of Sanford.

Note that the article does NOT give the race of the person shot.

Man found shot inside car on Interstate 4

Bullet hole found in the car's windshield, witnesses say

Published On: Apr 16 2012 04:30:24 AM EDT Updated On: Apr 16 2012 12:50:52 PM EDT

Man shot while driving on I-4
Orange County, FLA - Eastbound lanes of Interstate 4 near Maitland reopened Monday morning, but police continue to investigate how a man was shot while driving on the roadway.

A man was found shot in the chest inside a Mercury Milan just after 3 a.m. near exit 90 in Orange County. The interstate reopened about three hours later.

According to Maitland police, a woman inside the car said she was looking at her cellphone when she heard a "pop." She called 911 after the man told her, "I've been hit, I've been shot."

The woman, described only as a family member of the victim, was not injured.
The shooting occurred as the vehicle drove in the center lane approaching an overpass, according to police, who said the man was able to drive the car to the side of the road.

A bullet hole pierced the windshield of the car, and one shell casing was found nearby, police said.

The man was taken to a hospital and was listed in critical but stable condition.
Police said the shooting does not appear to be related to road rage because the woman told them no other cars were around at the time of the shooting.

"It doesn't appear that there was any vehicles in close proximity, she didn't recognize anything being around her when the shot was fired," said Sgt. Louis Grindle of the Maitland Police Department.

Anyone with information that could identify the shooter is urged to call Crimeline at 407-423-TIPS.

Bill, don't you worry about how the little old state of Florida decides to deal with guns.

You just worry about that slowly sinking ship you live in called California.

This article sums it up exactly.

    http://sultanknish.blogspot.com/2012...nd+the+News%29

Andy Warhol predicted that in the future everyone would be world-famous for 15 minutes. What he neglected to mention was that they were just as likely to be infamous.

Zimmerman had decorated his flyers and website with the famous quotation attributed to Edmund Burke, "The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil, is that good men do nothing." His activities reveal a man who took those words to heart, who put his time, money and safety on the line to become one of those good men who do something. But the problem was that Zimmerman had been reading Burke, when he should have been reading Kafka.

"Someone must have slandered Josef K., for one morning, without having done anything wrong, he was arrested." That is the famous opening sentence to Kafka's novel, "The Trial", words that have far more to do with the way we live now.

George Zimmerman is not on trial because he shot a black teenager during a scuffle. It's not the facts of the case that brought him here. It's his name. Had his last name been Pereira, none of this would have gone anywhere. And it's not the name alone, it's that in this time and place lynching him will help make the political fortunes of everyone from the man in the White House to his cheerful smiling prosecutor who is already counting her campaign cash and book deals.

Zimmerman with his book of quotations from the great thinkers of history, a man who clearly believes in the old fashioned virtues, is particularly ill-equipped to understand what is being done to him and why. The quotation that he plastered on flyers while investigating the beating of a homeless black man and on his own website, is more apt than he realizes.

The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is indeed that good men do nothing, but as a corollary to it, those are exactly the sort of men that evil will go after. It does no good to read Burke quotations to a Kardashian society which makes its determinations not on truth or justice, but on its omnipresent need for entertainment. Trying to reason with it only makes it angrier. Talking about virtues and decency to people who have none either confuses them or infuriates those few who understand the concept in some distant way.

We aspire to behave the way that George Zimmerman did, to contribute to our communities, to defy the conventional wisdom and speak out when we see wrongdoing. We believe that all that is needed for the triumph of evil is for good people to do nothing. And we are only a misstep away from being George Zimmerman, from doing the wrong thing, from intervening in the wrong fight, drawing the wrong cartoon or saying the wrong thing at the wrong time, a heartbeat away from appearing at the bar of the kangaroo court of stage managed public opinion.

In our own way we are all George Zimmerman. We think that society should be moral and rational, and that people should do the right thing. But that's not what it is. It's an insane braying donkey's laugh as the thieves, large and small, rob the people blind and then muscle them into a lynch mob to go after some handy victim. It's George today, it will be someone else tomorrow. Maybe someone who even deserves it. But it won't be the people destroying the country, because they're the ones leading the mob.

George Zimmerman has been chosen to serve as a gladiator in the circus that distracts a bankrupt nation from the criminal folly of its leaders, large and small. He has been assigned white team colors, had an NRA badge pinned to his lapel, and is being shoved out into the stadium while the lunatic mob howls for blood. The Emperor of Hope and Change has already made the thumbs down gesture, the courtiers are rushing out to fix the match.

Like Kafka's protagonist, Zimmerman has been protesting all along that this is some sort of mistake. And he's right. It is a mistake. Had the engineers behind the lynch mob gotten a good look at his photo, they might have pulled back and looked for a better victim. Someone who more properly fit their bicoastal idea of a "cracker" to string up on the crooked scales of Lady Justice. But once a mob has gotten started, it's hard to shut it down. And there's no real need to stop.

In the past, a media organ that reported a blatant lie might have at least paused on getting caught, but we live in a post-fact society now. The only thing that happens is that the media shrugs and doubles down on the narrative. George Zimmerman isn't white? Just call him a white-hispanic. Insist that Latinos are really white even though your entire practice has been to loudly scream the opposite. Accuse anyone who points out that Zimmerman doesn't look much like Larry the Cable Guy of being a racist. Problem solved.

Zimmerman thinks it's a mistake because he's not guilty. But as Kafka might have told him, guilt or innocence has little to do with it. Zimmerman wasn't indicted on charges of shooting a man, but of being a racist, of being the living embodiment of American inequality, NRA lawmaking and a dozen other sins. These are not charges that he can ever shake, because they are not legal crimes, they are political crimes.

The true charges against Zimmerman are 'class charges', they indict him as the representative of a class, white racists, gun owners and the entire heteronormative patriarchal class of men who quote Edmund Burke, carry guns and feel entitled to trail troubled black teenagers in their community. Lynching Zimmerman is not about putting one man away, it is about putting everyone away. It is about the absolute triumph of the system and its ideology and about putting the individualist in his place, in a small cell and an orange jumpsuit.

The original title of "The Trial" was "The Process" and we are always in the middle of a process. The process begins before we are born and ends only when our bodies and estates are disposed of to the complete satisfaction of the system. The point of Kafka's book was not whether the defendant was innocent or guilty. The point of the process was the process. The purpose of the trial was the trial.

We are all on trial under the system. That is the nightmare that Kafka anticipated. It is a reality that was already taking hold in the Soviet Union even while he was writing. The purpose of the trial is the absolute power of the system and its ability to snatch up anyone, examine them and then dispose of them. The theater of the trial informs everyone who lives under the system that they are at its mercy.

The very randomness of choosing Zimmerman, the contempt for the basic facts of the case, has become part of the message. The message is the same. The facts don't matter. The decision making process doesn't matter. Leave your evidence and your Burke quotations at home and watch how the wheels spin, the gears grind and the blood flows. The message is that the system is absolute and there is no escape.

This is evil. It is the very essence of evil. It is an evil that Zimmerman could not have seen coming or understood when he was out patrolling his community. It's an evil that is all around us. We can catch glimpses of it on the evening news, in the sneers of anchormen, the practiced smiles of politicians, it's there in Angela Corey's helpless grin, it's there in the mountains of paperwork, the lines of tiny print, the lines of people waiting at bulletproof windows, the morality mobs forming up digitally for the next victim to string up, the next popular opinion to enforce, the next skull to crush.

The beast that is doing its best to swallow up Zimmerman knows no facts or truths, it has no virtues, only goals. It cares nothing for what he did or did not do. Its only goal is to swallow him whole. It has eyes made of cameras, teeth made of guns, network cables for guts, a mind made of slogans and a nervous system that always needs stimulation. The beast may fail in its task, but it will let out a brief howl and move on to the next victim.

For all that the beast seems terrible to Zimmerman now, it is no larger than Obama's water dog, it is one of a thousand such animals wandering through studios, courtrooms, legislative offices, chambers and all the corridors of power. If it should fail, it will break up into a thousand pieces, the reporters will go back home, the racial hucksters will head to the next trouble spot, the protesters will go back to hanging out on street corners, the cops will ride past them, the prosecutor will treat it as a learning experience, the lawyers will add it to their calling card, and the politicians will sniff the air waiting to see which way the wind blows.

In movies trials end in some larger conclusion, some lesson learned, some principle defended. That will not happen here. The people who run our system no longer believe in those things. They don't read Burke, they don't even hang Andy Warhol on their walls, he has become too structured for them. There are no more lessons except the lesson of power, the grand game of guilt and terror, the spectators crowding the bars to see the tigers roar, the blood flow and the knowledge that they could be down there.

White guilt. Entitlement. Patriarchy. Heteronormative. Critical race theory. All that empty gabble of words is a way of defining power and power rests with those who make their words into law. Those who use them to destroy meaning and feed those who believe that words have meaning to the lions.

All that is necessary for the triumph of evil is for enough people who say things like that and mean it to be fed to lions. Not even on purpose, but because they stuck their head up at the wrong time, they caught the eye of the insect eyed Big Brother collective of critical racial theory thinkers and gender role debunkers, of sensitivity counselors and nightly news provocateurs, of politicians running on race and running away from race, of the rich playing class warfare against themselves and the poor who know that money comes from the government, and the uniformed and pantsuit clad minions who oversees the circus that keeps the system going a little longer.

We are all Zimmerman. One of us might be next. One of us will be next. The system is always hungry and the beasts must be fed.
"Far better it is to dare mighty things, to win glorious triumphs even though checkered by failure, than to rank with those poor spirits who neither enjoy nor suffer much because they live in the gray twilight that knows neither victory nor defeat."

We Are All George Zimmerman: Is a very accurate piece Mal, it illustrates where we're at in a 2012 America.

Trial of George Zimmerman Could Trigger Another Rodney King

Trayvon Martin’s shooter has a new lawyer. Mansfield Frazier hopes he’s advising his client to take a plea, since a protracted murder trial is the last thing we need.

As George Zimmerman faces murder charges for shooting Trayvon Martin, it’s worth asking if America is in danger of facing Rodney King, Part II?

That’s what I see down the tracks: If this case goes all the way to trial, it’s a train wreck waiting to happen. The time is now for strong hands to take the helm and steady the ship of state—not to mention our national racial, political and legal discourse. The paramount concern has to be to avert a large-scale racial calamity.

As Touré recently wrote, if sane adults are not careful, deliberate and measured in the handling of the Trayvon Martin-George Zimmerman affair, a dark time could descend upon America.

Look what’s already festering on the streets of Sanford, Florida. On the one hand we’ve got the three stooges of the New Black Panther Party running around Sanford, spouting off crazy ideas and becoming a total embarrassment to more thoughtful and reasoning blacks who simply want justice. On the other we’ve got the equally clownish neo-Nazis, goose-stepping around on their self-appointed mission to protect the white race.

In this environment it wouldn’t take much to ignite the racial power keg we’re sitting on. One false or ill-conceived move in this case could allow the loony inmates—not Zimmerman’s current neighbors, but those who are imprisoned by their long-simmering racial hatreds—to fan the incendiary flames of bigotry into full-blown conflagrations of violence across the land.
America can only dodge so many racial bullets, and a not-guilty verdict in this case could very easily turn the racial cold war into a very hot one.
Kevork Djansezian / AP Photos (left); Martin Family Photos / AP Photos
As someone who watched the King riots unfold from a Los Angeles motel window (and sometimes from the balcony, when we weren’t too afraid to venture out), I’m here to tell you it was a nightmarish time. Thick, acrid black smoke from hundreds of fires hung over the L.A. basin for days as young, armed blacks and Hispanics roared around in open convertibles and jeeps, wearing bandannas and brandishing all sorts of weaponry. We could hear gunfire both in the distance and nearby. Stores that hadn’t been set on fire the first day were looted by the second, and by the third day TV stations were warning of an impending food shortage. A body lay in the gutter on Crenshaw Boulevard for the better part of two days before National Guard troops removed it.

We don’t want to go back there. Fortunately Zimmerman’s new attorney, Mark O’Mara, appears to comprehend the broader implications and potential danger of the situation, and seems well qualified to negotiate a fair outcome for his client, and indeed for the rest of us. He has the calm demeanor of a law professor, and speaks in measured, but not calculating, terms. His first comments seemed designed not to convince anyone of his client’s innocence, but rather to take the heated rhetoric down a few notches. He cautioned that everyone should allow the justice system to work.

So what would a fair outcome look like? To my mind, the government offers Zimmerman a plea deal that has him back on the street within this decade, and he accepts it quietly. That seems like a conclusion most reasonable Americans could live with. Of course, no matter how long or short any sentence may be, there will be those who disagree, some vehemently.

If O’Mara were successful in brokering such a resolution, he should be viewed as nothing less than a savior. A protracted murder trial of George Zimmerman is the last thing this country needs right now. America can only dodge so many racial bullets, and a not-guilty verdict in this case could very easily turn the racial cold war into a very hot one.

Of course, for such a plea scenario to work, Zimmerman will need to listen more to O’Mara than to any of the other voices clamoring for a piece of him. He’s in isolation right now, presumably for his own safety, but a side benefit is that it keeps the more rabid right-wingers from getting inside his head and convincing him to take the case to trial, based on the belief that no matter what the evidence shows, in Florida at least one juror will never vote to convict. Unfortunately, this reasoning is not crazy. The South, after all, is still the South.

But after a few weeks of isolation and the counsel of O’Mara, Zimmerman may decide going to trial isn’t in his best interest. If O’Mara is as savvy as he seems, he will probably inform his client of the stark legal facts: The state overcharged him with murder 2 for two reasons: it’s a bargaining chip to force him to accept a lesser charge, and a means to keep him locked up pretrial. The way the legal system is designed, it’s difficult for someone being held in custody to win acquittal. Even if he went to trial and managed to get a hung jury, the state would surely retry him (multiple times, if necessary), until they get a conviction or he’s spent more time in the county lockup than he would have spent in prison if he’d just pleaded guilty in the first place. And even if he were acquitted, let’s not forget the specter of a federal indictment being handed down.

In all of this, the upcoming bail hearing is key: If the judge doesn’t grant bail, Zimmerman had better start listening real intently to his lawyer.

The wild card is his father, Robert, who has so far sounded like a knee-jerk far-right ideologue. In an interview he said, "I never foresaw so much hate coming from the president, the Congressional Black Caucus, the NAACP," and this was before Obama said anything about the case! It will be virtually impossible to keep Robert Zimmerman away from his son, which means he’ll have ample opportunity to whisper Stand Your Ground rhetoric into his ear, possibly ginning up Zimmerman’s courage and convincing him to go to trial in spite of the danger of being convicted.

We all need to pray that Mark O’Mara is successful in bringing about a fair outcome for his client, for justice, and, more important, for America.

Yep. I mostly disagree with some of the conclusions that the author came to but, I do think the sentiment in the article about the possibility of riots springing up as a result of anything but a "throw-the-book-at-him guilty" verdict are very possible.

Not to put words in Mal's mouth but what I think he means is that Zimmerman shouldn't be sacrificed just because some assholes will act out and cause big problems if they don't like the outcome of the trial.

    Obama's Coalition of the Enraged

    By Fay Voshell

The president and his allies are wooing various groups of angry and disaffected minorities. These, along with unhappy entitlement dependents, are to constitute most of the voters Obama seeks to lure into granting him another term, during which he hopes to complete his promise to "fundamentally transform" America. In an ironic reversal of the emphases of Madison's Federalist Paper #10, in which that great thinker carefully outlined the dangers of factionalism and pressed for the need for stability of the Republic of the United States, Obama and his supporters are seeking to achieve electoral hegemony by playing to minorities and supporting factionalism.

Anger, rather than hope, is to be the glue which keeps the disparate minorities together.

In turn, the rage of minorities against fellow Americans is to be the president's means to re-election. The result, should Obama be re-elected, will be a new class order characterized by the tyranny of minority rule.

The encouragement and incitements offered to the enraged have been numerous.

Among the factors is the White House's telling silence concerning the New Black Panthers' bounty on George Zimmerman, shooter of Trayvon Martin.

More silence has greeted the Panthers' threats to wage war. Unless wiser heads prevail, Trayvon Martin, whose early death is truly and grievously lamentable, may become the Panthers' equivalent to Horst Wessel.

The president's own comment -- "If I had a son, he would look like Trayvon" -- could be interpreted not as genuine sympathy for Trayvon's family, but as outrageous pandering for black votes. His comments and calculated silences also could serve as the matches that ignite race warfare. The president may literally be playing with fire. Anyone who recalls the 1960s will remember the conflagrations in cities like Los Angeles. Huge sections of the city were torched or trashed beyond recognition by enraged blacks protesting the arrest of Marquette Frye, 1965s near-equivalent of today's Trayvon Martin.

Meanwhile, the administration's incessant attacks against the "rich" continue unabated. Such are the unserious proclivities of our president that he puts forth the absurd "Buffett rule" -- which would rake in approximately 31 billion dollars over the next eleven years -- as a legitimate remedy for our economic ills, among which is a seven-trillion-dollar national debt. It is hard to escape the conclusion that the real purpose of the so-called "Buffett Rule" is to gather votes from the less well-off by inflaming their resentment of wealthier citizens.

The demonization of conservative women, as witnessed by the recent salvo against Ann Romney by Hilary Rosen, indicates an attempt to divide women into two camps: the liberals vs. the conservatives -- with the hope that independents will join liberals in voting for Obama. This is to say nothing of the attempts to tar the Republican Party as anti-woman by declaring that it is trying to keep women from obtaining birth control.

The war against Arizona and other states' attempts to secure borders, as continued undiminished as the Obama camp, could be a ploy to anger Hispanics enough to cause their stampede to the election booths.

The recent ominous attack against the Supreme Court indicates the administration's utter contempt for the constitutionally established balance of power. A seed of doubt as to the Court's integrity has been sown in the minds of millions who may have been persuaded that the Court doesn't care about the average citizen, but Obama does. Ergo, more votes for him and his odious agenda.

All the above are worrying indicators that the president's aim is to create a coalition of the disaffected and the angry while marginalizing the majority and bypassing constitutionally established institutions.

The president and his allies fail to see that there is a huge distinction between righteous indignation and raw rage. Righteous indignation is a struggle against genuine injustices. Such a struggle was the driving force behind the civil rights movement of the '50s and '60s.

Who among those who lived during those decades then can forget the signature injustices that characterized racial apartheid in America? Who can forget the separate drinking fountains, the back door entrances, the segregated lunch counters and schools? Who can forget the intransigence of racists like Bull Conner and George Wallace of "segregation now, segregation tomorrow and segregation forever" infamy? Who can erase the memory of the 1963 KKK church bombing and the deaths of four innocent little girls? Who still remembers the fire hoses turned on innocent protestors?

    We should never forget.

But there is a big difference between righteous indignation and ginned-up rage that divides classes and races in order that votes are garnered and wealth redistributed. The first is salutary, absolutely necessary, and transformative of society, as it speaks to universal rights as human beings standing as equals before God and mankind.

But what we see being incited in recent incidents, including the Trayvon Martin incident, is ginned-up rage that bears little or no resemblance to righteous indignation. On the contrary, it is tantamount to malicious pandering to anger. It smells like an attempt to divide Americans and garner votes from the disaffected and enraged. It looks like duplicitous behavior designed to foster war among American classes and ethnicities.

In sum, it is the kind of anger that resembles "Burn, baby, burn" more than "We shall overcome one day."

Leaders of the new faux race rage, Al Sharpton and Jesse Jackson among them, are like old soldiers who had their little hour but want to continue strutting their stuff on a tiny stage. The background sets are faded imitations of the truly great civil rights battles of the past.

In contrast to the current administration's and race warfare-mongers' agenda of anger expressed in class and ethnic warfare, conservatives of every stripe must offer not only blunt analyses of what this administration is up to, but also a plan of real hope -- not hype.

A good beginning would be to heed Madison's advice to promote a "well constructed Union" which controls by the constitutionally appointed and balanced means of government institutions "the violence of faction" while ensuring that minorities retain their full rights and privileges as citizens.

Real "hope and change" cannot possibly be engendered by rage characterized by class warfare. Unbridled rage always results in destruction of societal order and human happiness. Peaceful change based on righteous indignation and the desire to reform existing institutions and to soften class rigidities that prevent upward mobility has far more potential to create and sustain a stable, orderly, and happy society.

If we are to be friends of our own country as Madison was, we must resist with all that is within us the anger of factionalism and any "instability, injustice and confusion introduced into the public councils" in order that this great land not perish from the face of the earth by means of division, strife and anger.

Correct. "Most Americans will be satisfied". No, this American will not be satisfied if Zimmerman spends any part of his life in jail, sacrificed at the behest of blacks howling for blood.

Dershowitz Blasts Zimmerman Prosecution: 'Not Only Immoral, But Stupid'

by Breitbart News 5 hours ago 1010 post a comment

With ABC News’ release of the George Zimmerman photo showing blood flowing freely from his head, the question becomes whether Angela Corey, the prosecutor in the case, had access to the photo before charging Zimmerman with second-degree murder.

The arrest affidavit did not mention the photograph, or the bleeding, gashes, and bruises on Zimmermans’ head. Professor Alan Dershowitz of Harvard Law School stated upon release of the arrest affidavit that it was “so thin that it won’t make it past a judge on a second degree murder charge … everything in the affidavit is completely consistent with a defense of self-defense.”

After the release of the photo, however, Dershowitz went much further, telling Breitbart News that if the prosecutors did have the photo and didn’t mention it in the affidavit, that would constitute a “grave ethical violation,” since affidavits are supposed to contain “all relevant information.”

Dershowitz continued, “An affidavit that willfully misstates undisputed evidence known to the prosecution is not only unethical but borders on perjury because an affiant swears to tell not only the truth, but the whole truth, and suppressing an important part of the whole truth is a lie."

When asked if it made a difference whether the prosecution had the bloody photograph at the time they charged Zimmerman, Dershowitz responded, “We do know that there were earlier photographs before the affidavit was done that strongly suggested blood on the back of the head, and we know the police had first access to him, so if there was blood they [the prosecution] would know about it …

"I've had cases in Florida against prosecutors,” Dershowitz said, “and this is not the first time they have willfully omitted exculpatory evidence. It's a continuing problem. Here, it’s not only immoral, but stupid. The whole country is watching. What do they benefit from having half-truths in an affidavit?"

Dershowitz added, "I'm not taking sides, but I'm insisting that both sides play by the rules, and so far the prosecution is not playing by the rules."

Suspect: I Beat Up White Man Because I Am Mad About Trayvon Martin Case
    April 20, 2012

Maywood, Ill. - Alton L. Hayes III, a west suburban man charged with a hate crime, told police he was so upset about the Trayvon Martin case in Florida that he beat up a white man early Tuesday.

Hayes and a 15-year-old Chicago boy walked up behind the 19-year-old man victim and pinned his arms to his side, police said. Hayes, 18, then picked up a large tree branch, pointed it at the man and said, “Empty your pockets, white boy.”

The two allegedly rifled through the victim’s pockets, then threw him to the ground and punched him “numerous times” in the head and back before running away, police said. Hayes and the boy are black; the victim is white.

After being arrested, Hayes told police he was upset by the Trayvon Martin case and beat the man up because he was white, Cook County State’s Attorney’s office spokeswoman Tandra Simonton said, citing court records.

Martin, 17, was fatally shot Feb. 26 in Sanford, Fla., by neighborhood watch volunteer George Zimmerman, who was charged April 11 with second-degree murder. Zimmerman is Hispanic, while Martin was black.

Hayes, 18 of the 1200 block of North Woodbine Avenue in Oak Park, was charged with attempted robbery, aggravated battery and a hate crime, all felonies, Oak Park police Detective Cmdr. Ladon Reynolds said.

Hayes was ordered held on $80,000 bond and remained in the Cook County Jail on Friday. He will next appear in court May 11. The boy was referred to juvenile court.

Man Shot, Attacked By A Dozen Teens In Hartford, CT
    April 15, 2012

man was sent to the hospital after being attacked by a large group of teenage boys and shot in Hartford Sunday morning.

Just after midnight, police received a report of a serious assault involving gun shots at Sigourney Square Park.

Police said an adult male was shot in the upper left back, shoulder area, and was taken to St. Francis Hospital to be treated for non-life threatening injuries.

At the hospital, it was discovered that the man had suffered a single gun shot wound of a small caliber bullet. The bullet penetrated his back and lodged into his chest cavity. Police said the bullet remains in his body.

According to police, the man said he was attacked by 10 to 12 black males ranging in age from 15 to 16 years old, in white tee-shirts, in what he's calling a gang type assault.

The man said he could identify one of the suspects in the attack, but no others.

    The incident remains under investigation.

Metro D.C. Attack Victim Says Help Took 15 Minutes
    April 17, 2012

A man who was attacked by another man on Metro last month said he no longer feels safe on Metro -- and some of that has to do more with a dispatcher's response than the attack itself.

The assailant was screaming obscenities, and headbutted and punched him on a train near the Smithsonian station, the victim said.

He didn't want to reveal his identity for his own safety, but he told News4's Darcy Spencer that when he got off the train, he asked the train conductor and station manager for help. He said the conductor seemed to ignore him, and the station manager didn't say anything to him, although the victim later learned he did call police.

The victim called Metro Transit Police himself, but it took 15 minutes for an officer to show up.

He later found out the dispatcher, who refused to call for a D.C. officer, sent a Metro Transit officer from Alexandria instead, even though the incident took place in the District.

The man said a deputy chief of Metro Transit Police told him the dispatcher should have called D.C. police to assist since it was a crime in progress.

The victim wrote an opinion piece in the Sunday edition of the Washington Post, demanding an investigation into the incident and those involved.

He’s asking for victims of similar situations to come forward by emailing Metro, and CCing his address, dcmetrosafety@gmail.com.

In the meantime, he's filed a formal complaint. The alleged assailant has been arrested and charged.
