As Media Reports Conflict, Why Was Trayvon Martin Photo Altered?

Among a few interesting items uncovered in trying to examine the facts behind the shooting of Florida teenager Trayvon Martin without drawing any conclusions, was that a widely viewed photograph of Martin appears to have been altered, somewhat.

Here is what appears to be the original via the Miami Herald.

The one below has been observed in the media and at forums such as Democracy Now. Clearly, it has been lightened, or softened, somehow.

Along with other possible alterations, he looks far more, perhaps innocent is the right word, in the altered image. For the record, that has nothing to do with the guilt, or innocence, of anyone involved, but more to do with the reporting of the story, which is why I'm bringing it up.

Also, in following up on this item at the Charlelston Examiner, it's becoming increasingly difficult to know what the facts actually are.
The witness reports that George Zimmerman was on the ground and Trayvon is on top of him punching him. The witness says that George Zimmerman was screaming and yelling for help.

Police arrive and find Zimmerman bleeding on his face and the back of his head. He also has had grass stains on his back. All this confirms the story told by Zimmerman and the witness.

Police play the 911 tape for Trayvon Martin's father, who tells police that the voice screaming is not the voice of his son. Zimmerman was on the ground being punched when he shot Trayvon Martin.

The media also characterizes Trayvon as a "model student." In fact, he under a five day suspension when the shooting took place. That is why he was staying at a house so far from his school on a school night. A laywer for Trayvon's family has blocked access to his school records. However, you have to do something pretty bad to get suspended for five days.
A local news video report supports much of the above. It claims prosecutors advised police they did not have enough evidence to win a manslaughter conviction. Zimmerman claims Martin attacked him, while Martin's Father said the voice heard calling for help was not his son, Trayvon Martin. If accurate, it would have been Zimmerman calling for help.

The reports claims police also said Zimmerman's account was corroborated by witnesses.

Also, according to media reports, Martin was suspended for ten days, not five, for being in an unauthorized area on school property, not a violent behavioral issue, as the Miami Herald indicates he did have behavior problems of some non-violent type. Still, an Orlando Sentinel story quotes a teacher as saying he was suspended for being tardy and had no behavior issues.
Still, Trayvon had nonviolent behavioral issues in school, and on the day he was killed, he had been suspended for 10 days from Dr. Michael M. Krop Senior High School in North Miami-Dade. “He was not suspended for something dealing with violence or anything like that. It wasn’t a crime he committed, but he was in an unauthorized area [on school property],” Martin said, declining to offer more details. Before that, Trayvon attended Miami Carol City High School near his mother’s home in Miami Gardens.
He was visiting in an area 250 miles away from home with his Father at the time.
He would be 17 for 21 days. He died Feb. 26, a bullet in his chest, shot by a neighborhood crime watch captain patrolling a suburban gated townhouse community in Sanford, 250 miles from his home, where he had gone with his father after a school suspension.
While certain facts may remain in doubt, or disputed, what's increasingly clear is that by climbing over one another to get the story, mainstream media journalists appear to be adding more confusion, than clarity, to the shooting death of Trayvon Martin. However, that did not stop Barack Obama from weighing in, claiming if he had a son, it would look like Trayvon Martin. That may depend on what photo of him he's seen, of course.

    African-American Lynch Mob

Posted by David Horowitz Bio ↓ on Mar 25th, 2012 Comments ↓

Is anybody else out there as sick and tired as I am of lynch mob racists like Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton (vide: Tawana Brawley, the Duke Lacrosse kids) who don the mantel of the “civil rights” movement to indict non-blacks in advance of the facts, and incite racial rage against them? Yet that is exactly what they – and scores of black leaders — are doing to an Hispanic individual named George Zimmerman. Along with a cast of thousands, they are holding him guilty of racism before the fact, justifying a hatred, as inflammatory as the hatred once spewed by southern crackers against blacks.

There is no evidence whatsoever that race was a defining factor in the tragic death of Trayvon Martin. Notwithstanding the absence of evidence, this unhappy incident is now the occasion for school shut-downs, mass marches and public death threats by enraged African Americans, displaying behaviors reminiscent of the lynch mobs that were once a scourge of their parents’ generation in a now rejected past.

The facts surrounding the death of Trayvon Martin have not been investigated and are still uncertain. But the lynch mob has delivered its verdict: George Zimmerman is guilty of a race crime; Trayvon Martin was killed because he was black. “Trayvon is the Emmett Till of our generation,” said one mob leader, referring to the 12-year-old who was murdered by white racists in 1955 for whistling at a white woman.

There is no verifiable evidence for this fact-challenged, inflammatory, claim. According to the lone eyewitness to come forward, it was Martin who attacked Zimmerman and was on top of him and beating him to a pulp when the fatal shot was fired. The fact that Zimmerman’s face was bloody when the police arrived, is an apparent corroboration of this version of the event.

Is this what happened? We don’t know. But it is a claim that should get tested in a court of law. Unfortunately to a lynch mob the evidence is irrelevant, the conclusion foregone.

If the demonstrators were merely calling for an investigation that would be proper. But the cries for retribution, and the accusations of racism, which dominate the public demonstrations are not. And that goes for the statement of the President as well. Not willing to be separated from his racial constituency, even when they are behaving badly, Obama has lent his prestige to the insinuation that the crime was inspired by the victim’s race. Otherwise there would be no reason to mention the fact that “If I had a son, he would look like Trayvon.” Everyone who has a son should be concerned by the loss of this life. By making it racial, the president is establishing guilt without evidence, and indicting non-black America as well.

The display of racial outrage over this case is a national disgrace. It is a throwback to the past and a shameful repudiation of the values the civil rights movement once stood for but apparently does no longer.

Trayvon Martin death could be turning point, says the Rev. Jesse Jackson

6:33 p.m. EST, March 25, 2012|By Jeff Kunerth, Orlando Sentinel

Preaching before an estimated 1,600 people Sunday, the Rev. Jesse Jacksonsaid the death of Trayvon Martin could be a tragic moment or the beginning of a movement.

"How do we go from a moment to a movement that creates fundamental change?" Jackson told the capacity crowd at the Macedonia Missionary Baptist Church in Eatonville. "If it's a moment, we go home. If it's a movement, we go to war."

He characterized Martin's death as a transformative event reminiscent of the killings of Emmett Till in 1955, Mississippi civil rights activist Medgar Evers in 1963 andMartin Luther King Jr. in 1968.

But Jackson was concerned that the hooded sweatshirt has come to symbolize Martin when Martin should instead be a symbol of racial injustice and civil rights. The unarmed teenager was shot to death last month in Sanford by a Neighborhood Watch captain who thought he looked suspicious.

"The danger of focusing on the hoodie is that he wasn't killed because of the hoodie. He was killed because he was black," Jackson said. "The issue is not the hoodie — it's race, registration and civil rights."

Demonstrators have started wearing hooded sweatshirts such as the one Martin had on when he was killed in Sanford on Feb. 26.

Rev. Raphael G. Warnock announced he would wear a hoodie for today's service at Ebenezer Baptist Church in Atlanta.

"We are doing this not for show, but to send a message that all humanity is sacred. And by saying all, we are including African-American boys and girls, and men and women who reserve the right to wear a hoodie in the rain and not be racially profiled and killed because bigots think that their appearance is suspicious, or threatening," Warnock said in a statement posted on Ebenezer's website.

Jackson said he would like to see the black population turn its anger over the death of Trayvon Martin into an energy directed at voter registration, economic inequity and other issues of discrimination and racial injustice.

"I would hope that movement would turn into Trayvon Martin voter-registration rallies," Jackson said in a press conference following the Sunday service.

Jackson is in Orlando to attend the special Seminole County Commission meeting on the Martin shooting at 5 p.m. Monday in the Sanford Civic Center. Expecting an overflow crowd, loudspeakers will be set up outside the Civil Center. Martin's parents and theRev. Al Sharpton also are expected at the meeting.

Trayvon, who resided with his mother in the South Florida community of Miami Gardens, was walking from a convenience store to the home of his father's girlfriend in The Retreat at Twin Lakes, a private, gated community in Sanford. He was visiting his father.

George Zimmerman, a volunteer Neighborhood Watch captain in the community, told police he shot the teen in self-defense.

Jackson, who marched with King in the 1960s, said the hood was first used by the Ku Klux Klan to shield their identities while committing violence against blacks.

"Whether you are wearing a hood or a sheet, nobody has the right to kill anybody," Jackson said.

The civil rights leader extended his plea to end the violence beyond whites killing blacks, but also blacks killings whites and blacks killing blacks.

"Stop the violence. Save the children," Jackson said, leading the congregation in a chant.

Jackson said Martin's death was not so unusual, but what made it so exceptional is Martin himself. The 17-year-old did not have a history of drugs, violence or delinquency. He has the appeal of innocence and the power of a martyr, Jackson said.

"Martyrs have power," Jackson said. "He represents all of us."

Macedonia Rev. Willie Barnes reiterated Jackson's call to action that goes beyond Martin to all areas of racial injustice in Central Florida.

"There is power in the innocent blood of Trayvon Martin," Barnes said. "We are refreshed with this injustice."

Corey Lee Sutton, suspect charged in Lakeland sexual attack, is just 14 years old

Lakeland, Florida -- On Monday, Lakeland police said the man in a hotel surveillance video was the suspect in a brutal sexual assault Sunday at the Hyatt Lakeland Center.

It turns out that man -- all five-foot-seven, 215 pounds of him -- is a 14-year-old boy.

"It's just appalling to everyone," said Lakeland Police Capt. Greg Policastro. "I think it's a concern for everybody when you encounter violent crime for individuals that are that young."

Police identified the suspect as Corey Lee Sutton.

Sutton, they say, has juvenile rap sheet dating back to the age of 10 that includes felonies, but "nothing as serious as this," said Policastro.

Detectives say Sutton's own relatives saw the surveillance video on TV and called them. The 14 year-old, who'd been missing since Friday night, was then picked-up a short time later at a friend's home.

With his mother's permission, police say they questioned Sutton and got a full confession.

Sutton allegedly intended to rob a 24-year-old hotel worker on her break, but became violent by choking, beating, and sexually assaulting her.

"He demonstrated remorse, no question about that," said Policastro.

At Sutton's Lakeland home Wednesday, there were people coming and going, but but no one was willing to answer the door for a comment.

Patricia Peters, a neighbor who lives about three houses away, says she feels for the victim and Sutton's family.

"My heart kind of goes out to them because as a parent, it's hard when your child's done something wrong. You still love them. You just don't like what they've done," said Peters.

Expressing shock, neighbors say Sutton was the oldest of several kids who often played basketball in the front yard. They say he was mature for his age, but not always respectful.

Troy Burmeister, whose daughter plays with one of the Sutton's other children at a mutual friend's house, says despite the 14-year-old's past questionable behavior, he was shocked to hear about the charges.

"He's got a heck of a mouth on him. He likes to speak like he's grown," said Burmeister.

Police say the victim in this case has been released from the hospital and has been informed of Sutton's arrest. They say the state attorney's office will decide whether Sutton should be charged as an adult.

He faces charges of robbery, sexual assault, and attempted second degree murder.

Schumer calls for federal probe of 'Stand Your Ground' laws after Florida shooting

    Published March 25, 2012 | FoxNews.com

Sen. Chuck Schumer is calling on the Justice Department to investigate so-called "Stand Your Ground" laws following the fatal shooting of an unarmed Florida teen.

The law, a version of which was enacted in Florida in 2005, allows for individuals to use deadly force -- even outside their home -- if they feel threatened.

Since the shooting of 17-year-old Trayvon Martin, Republican leaders have called the killing a tragedy but argue that the law in question did not actually apply to this case.

Still, Schumer wrote in a letter to Attorney General Eric Holder on Sunday that the laws themselves should be investigated.

"These laws seem to be encouraging vigilantism by allowing individuals to use deadly force as a first resort," Schumer, D-N.Y., said in a statement.

Schumer asked Holder's department to probe whether the laws "are creating more violence than they are preventing," and whether potential murders are "going unprosecuted" because of them.

He estimated that 23 states have some form of this law.

Schumer cited statistics in Florida showing that before the law was approved, the state averaged 12 justifiable homicides per year. The average subsequent to the law's enactment was 33.

Schmucky Schumer needs to mind his own fucking business and focus on his shithole state (sorry any sane person from NY reading) and look up what the hell Federalism is.

    What a gross misrepresentation.

I think that I won't say anything further in this thread. I'm from Detroit. Luckily I wasn't there in 1967-68 for the riots. We had moved down to Kentucky a few years before and I moved back in 68 just in time for the World Series. By that time riots were a distant memory, but the hatred blacks had for whites hadn't dissipated. I spent most of my next few years fighting someone or another because of names I was called or because I was physically attacked.

Except for one incident, NONE of the assailants were white. And yet today all these years later, I'm still not a racist, except that I'm a white boy .....

I guess that makes me a racist.

With a single punch, Trayvon Martin decked the Neighborhood Watch volunteer who eventually shot and killed the unarmed 17-year-old, then Trayvon climbed on top of George Zimmerman and slammed his head into the sidewalk several times, leaving him bloody and battered, authorities have revealed to the Orlando Sentinel.

That is the account Zimmerman gave police, and much of it has been corroborated by witnesses, authorities say.

Zimmerman has not spoken publicly about what happened, but that night, Feb. 26, and in later meetings he described and re-enacted for police what he says happened.

In his version of events, he had turned around and was walking back to his SUV when Trayvon approached him from behind, the two exchanged words then Trayvon punched him in the nose, sending him to the ground, and began beating him.

Zimmerman told police he shot the teenager in self-defense.

Civil rights leaders and thousands of others have demanded Zimmerman's arrest, calling Trayvon a victim of racial profiling and Zimmerman a vigilante.

Trayvon was an unarmed black teenager who had committed no crime, they say, who was gunned down while walking back from a 7-Eleven with nothing more sinister than a package of Skittles and can of Arizona iced tea.

Supporters have held rallies in Sanford, Miami, New York and Tallahassee, calling the case a tragic miscarriage of injustice.

Activist Al Sharpton headlined a rally in Sanford Thursday that drew an estimated 8,000 people. The Rev. Jesse Jackson yesterday spoke at an Eatonville church, where he called Trayvon a martyr.

Another rally is scheduled for 4 p.m. today in Sanford.

Zimmerman has gone into hiding. A fringe group, the New Black Panthers, have offered a $10,000 reward for his capture.

Police have been reluctant to provided details about all their evidence, but this is what they've disclosed to the Sentinel:

Zimmerman was on his way to the grocery store when he spotted Trayvon walking through his gated community.

Trayvon was visiting his father's fiancée, who lived there. He had been suspended from school in Miami after being found with an empty marijuana baggie. Miami schools have a zero-tolerance policy for drug possession.

Zimmerman called police and reported a suspicious person, describing Trayvon as black, acting strangely and perhaps on drugs.

Zimmerman got out of his SUV to follow Trayvon on foot. When a dispatch employee asked Zimmerman if he was following the 17-year-old, Zimmerman said yes. The dispatcher told Zimmerman he did not need to do that.

There is about a one-minute gap during which police say they're not sure what happened.

Zimmerman told them he lost sight of Trayvon and was walking back to his SUV when Trayvon approached him from the left rear, and they exchanged words.

Trayvon asked Zimmerman if he had a problem. Zimmerman said no and reached for his cell phone, he told police.

Trayvon then said, "Well, you do now" or something similar and punched Zimmerman in the nose.

Zimmerman fell to the ground and Trayvon got on top of him and began slamming his head into the sidewalk, he told police.

    Zimmerman began yelling for help.

Several witnesses heard those cries, and there's been a dispute about from whom they came: Zimmerman or Trayvon.

Lawyers for Trayvon's family say it was Trayvon, but police say their evidence indicates it was Zimmerman.

One witnesses, who has since talked to local television news reporters, told police he saw Zimmerman on the ground with Trayvon on top, pounding him and was unequivocal that it was Zimmerman who was crying for help.

Zimmerman then shot Trayvon once in the chest from very close range, according to authorities.

When police arrived less than two minutes later, Zimmerman was bleeding from the nose, had a swollen lip and had bloody lacerations to the back of his head.

Paramedics gave him first aid, but he said no to going to the hospital. He got medical care the next day.

The Department of Justice last week opened a civil rights investigation into what happened, and Gov. Rick Scott appointed a special prosecutor.

It's not clear whether the special prosecutor, Angela Corey, the state attorney for Duval, Clay and Nassau counties, will have Zimmerman arrested, announce that there's not enough evidence to file a manslaughter charge or present evidence to a grand jury.
"Far better it is to dare mighty things, to win glorious triumphs even though checkered by failure, than to rank with those poor spirits who neither enjoy nor suffer much because they live in the gray twilight that knows neither victory nor defeat."

Well.. it's time for a Grand Jury to hear the bloody evidence and do what is right.

Either arrest the guy for murder or exonerate him.

    Immediately.

Before this shit gets out of hand with people like Sharpton and Reverend Jackson talking up more shit to get the riots started again.

What the fuck is wrong with those people? Not everything done against a black man is racist or unfair, is it now you loud mouthed bastards?

The Far Left wants a race war followed by civil unrest that renews gun restrictions.

This activity is to clamp down on free speech and squelches any meaningful debate from conservatives as racist about Obama's past and present record leading up to the elections

Make no mistake the Trayvon Martin's death will become the rallying cry for the Far Left's Social Justice in the coming months.

Jackson calls for repeal of self defense laws in wake of Trayvon Martin death

In the wake of the Trayvon Martin shooting in Sanford, Florida, Rev. Jesse Jackson yesterday called for the repeal of self defense laws, such as the 'Stand Your Ground' statute in Florida that allows citizens leeway in the use of firearms to protect their lives and property. Jackson made the remarks during an address before an African American congregation yesterday in Eatonville, Florida, which is located 20 miles from the Martin shooting.

According to the Miami Herald, Jackson referred to Trayvon Martin as a 'martyr' and likened the spilling of his blood to that of Jesus Christ. Using the familiar hymn on the death of Christ entitled, There's Power in the Blood, as his theme, Jackson declared, "There's power in the blood of Emmett Till! There's Power in the blood of Medgar Evers! There's power in the blood of Dr. King!"

Jackson then called for the repeal of Stand Your Ground, stating that the law prevented police from placing under arrest George Zimmerman, who allegedly shot Martin while fulfilling his duties as a community watch volunteer.

In a TV interview following the address, Jackson went further to state that only police officers should have firearms and that guns should be outlawed for average citizens.
But according to former Florida Governor Jeb Bush, who was the state's chief executive at the time the law was passed, Stand Your Ground had nothing to do with the fact that Zimmerman has not yet been charged:
“This law does not apply to this particular circumstance,” Bush said after an education panel discussion at the University of Texas at Arlington. “Stand your ground means stand your ground. It doesn’t mean chase after somebody who’s turned their back.”
Stand Your Ground laws have been passed in multiple states over the past few years in response to citizen complaints that many of the statutes at the time severely restricted their ability to defend their lives and homes when attacked by intruders, particularly when they are the victims of the growing phenomenon of home invasions. The new laws also give citizens the freedom to defend themselves with guns if they are attacked away from their homes.

Florida, Texas, Georgia, South Carolina, New Hampshire, Michigan, Montana, and Indiana are among the 27 states that have passed similar laws, which are also known as 'the Castle Doctrine.'

While critics have claimed that the laws are tantamount to vigilante justice, the laws are very specific concerning how and under what circumstances citizens can act with immunity in using firearms in clear cases of self defense.

The setting and circumstances of the Trayvon Martin shooting appear to indicate that Stand Your Ground does not apply, given that Zimmerman apparently followed Martin in a public area outside a convenience store to a gated community in Sanford.

While police have been sketchy about providing specific details to the media concerning the shooting, apparently Zimmerman was not threatened when he decided to follow Martin after spotting him outside the convenience store. There are reports that an eye witness claims that later in the chase Martin attacked Zimmerman, which led to the shooting, but the details concerning such reports are scant.

Governor Bush made it clear that he was speaking about the initial incident in which Zimmerman thought Martin "looked suspicious" and began to follow him. Stand Your Ground laws do not consider such a thing as a legitimate factor in using deadly force.

If it is determined later once all of the facts are in that Martin directly attacked Zimmerman at some point, then and only then would the Stand Your Ground statue come into play.

The specific statutes in the various states concerning Stand Your Ground can be viewed here.

Jesse Jackson, Al Sharpton Join NAACP in Trayvon Martin Protests

Monday marks another restless day in Sanford, Fla., where community leaders and activists, NAACP leaders, and Christian ministers, are scheduled to attend a series of events calling for punishment for the killer of 17-year-old Trayvon Martin, who was shot exactly one month ago while returning from a store, unarmed.

A panel discussion will be held at the Macedonia Missionary Baptist Church at noon today, moderated by columnist and TV talk show host Roland Martin, according to local media reports. Panelists are to include NAACP Florida president, Adora Obi Nweze, as well as Martin family attorneys, Ben Crump and Natalie Jackson and state Rep. Dwayne L. Taylor (D-Daytona Beach).

The NAACP has been supporting the Martin family since the tragedy made national headlines, with members insisting that the African-American teen's killing involved racial profiling. Martin was shot by George Zimmerman, a self-appointed neighborhood watchman, who had not been arrested due to Florida's "Stand Your Ground Law," which allows residents to use deadly force to defend themselves in order to "prevent death or great bodily harm." Zimmeran, who is white and Hispanic, claims he shot Martin in self-defense, as he feared for his life. According to reports, Zimmerman followed Martin, despite police ordering him not to, as he walked through a gated residential community.

Prominent black church leaders are also planning to show their support for Martin's family today by joining the calls for Zimmerman's arrest.

Popular Baltimore evangelist Jamal Bryant is scheduled to protest in front of Sanford City Hall at 4 p.m. before a 5 p.m. City Council meeting. The protest will begin at First United Methodist Church on South Park Avenue, and end at the Sanford Civic Center, according to The Orlando Sentinel.
"Headed to Sanford today with a few Sorors to rally for justice," Bryant Tweeted Monday morning.

Trayvon Martin's parents, along with civil rights activists the Rev. Jesse Jackson and the Rev. Al Sharpton, will be in attendance at the 5 p.m. town hall meeting.

Sharpton has been arguably the most outspoken advocate for the case among public church personalities and public figures. During a big rally last week, which he led, Sharpton said that Zimmerman "should have been arrested that night."

Monday morning, Sharpton tweeted: "Spent much of last night meeting with the parents and lawyers of Trayvon Martin about the legal and movement strategy for justice."

Although some observers have noted that it has predominantly been African-American church leaders at the forefront of calls for justice in Trayvon Martin's case, other Christian figures have expressed outrage over the teen's killing.

Many Southern Baptist pastors in Florida see the issue as a social justice case, not a racial profiling one, a local pastor told The Christian Post recently.
Among prominent Evangelical leaders who have expressed solidarity with the protesters were Franklin Graham of Samaritan's Purse and John Piper of Bethlehem Baptist Church in Minneapolis, Minn.
