The year 2014 saw more global persecution of Christians than any other year in recent history, and can only be compared to the first centuries when Christians were hunted down as criminals in the Roman Empire. The policy of the Emperor Diocletian, in fact, who reigned from 284-305AD, was remarkably similar to that taken by the Islamic State and Boko Haram: “Convert or die.”

A look around the globe reveals an unprecedented pattern of persecution that has shifted from isolated incidents of hostility to a systematic campaign to exterminate Christians in places where they have lived peacefully for centuries.

From the kidnapped school girls and massacres in Nigeria and the displacement of thousands in the Central African Republic, to the believers arrested for having a Bible study in Central Asia, to Meriam Ibrahim being sentenced to death in Sudan, to the ISIS slaughters, to the couple burned alive for blasphemy and hundreds of girls kidnapped in Pakistan, Christians throughout the world saw a major escalation in persecution in 2014.

The Jerusalem Post has spoken of “the religious cleansing of Middle East Christians” and noted that “anti-Christian violence in 2014 saw a transformation from under-told news coverage, to routine reports of radical Islamists seeking to obliterate Christianity’s presence.”

Nina Shea, director of the Hudson Institute’s Center for Religious Freedom, said that “persecution” no longer adequately describes the treatment of Christians in a growing number of Muslim areas. “Religious cleansing, a type of cultural genocide, which is a crime against humanity, is the more accurate description,” she said. “This is now occurring in Iraq, Syria, parts of Nigeria, Egypt, Sudan, Somalia and Pakistan.”

As noted in World Affairs, in Iraq the Islamic State is undertaking a religious cleansing intended to eradicate the entire presence of the country’s non-Muslim citizens. This war on Christians is not restricted to Iraq, but is also underway in other countries in the Middle East, Africa, and Asia. Extermination campaigns are being carried out by a multitude of extremist groups and “are directed most commonly and with special zeal against Christian communities that in some cases have coexisted with Muslims for more than a thousand years.”

Archbishop Athanasius Toma Dawod of the Syriac Orthodox church in Iraq describes the systematic persecution of Christians in the Middle East as “genocide” and “ethnic cleansing.” He has further said: “They are killing our people in the name of Allah and telling people that anyone who kills a Christian will go straight to heaven: that is their message.”

Dawod catalogs their activities in a grim list of offenses: “They have burned churches; they have burned very old books. They have damaged our crosses and statues of the Virgin Mary. They are occupying our churches and converting them into mosques.”

Things are no better in Syria, where Christians, both clerical and lay, have been the target of continual aggression. Last April 7, assassins broke into the monastery of Jesuit priest Frans van der Lugt in Homs, Syria, and shot him twice in the head. Although the priest had been doing humanitarian work nearly fifty years, suddenly in 2014 he was considered a symbol of the “infidel,” as one of a handful of Christians remaining in Homs of the population of eighty thousand Christians that lived there until recently.

With the rise of ISIS, “targeted violence against Christians has escalated.” Syria is undergoing a period of intense “Islamization” and Christians are becoming more exposed in all spheres of life. Many Christians have been abducted, physically abused or killed, and many churches damaged or destroyed. On October 21, jihadists invaded the ancient Christian settlement of Sadad, killing at least 45 people, and harming many more.

In northern Nigeria, the radical Islamist group Boko Haram has undertaken a ruthless program of forced conversions in its attempt to establish an Islamic Caliphate. Boko Haram soldiers storm Christian areas going from home to home demanding that every man convert to Islam. Those who refuse are shot dead on the spot. The radical group, which has proved more than a match for the Nigerian military, has killed as many as 350 Christians in a single week.

Boko Haram has repeatedly beheaded male opponents and forced Christian women to marry them and convert to Islam, and has been responsible for the deaths of at least 4,000 Nigerians in this year alone.

In 2014, China saw some of the most aggressive anti-Christian persecution since the times of Mao, which involved incarceration, the demolition of churches, and the systematic removal of crosses. An elderly woman in Sanjiang, in Zhejiang province, saw her church demolished. “During the Cultural Revolution they burned Bibles, but they didn’t remove the crosses,” she said.

A pastor in Beijing noted that “by making a clean sweep of Sanjiang, the government wants to set an example and show that nothing will stop it.” In May, six other churches were earmarked for demolition in Wenzhou, and one church was converted into a “cultural auditorium.” In the following weeks, the crosses on 15 churches in the Wenzhou region were smashed or removed by crane. Another local pastor said simply: “They want to remove every trace.”

Paradoxically, it is in some of these very areas where Christians are suffering most that are seeing the greatest growth in conversions to Christianity.

A second-century Church Father named Tertullian famously said that “the blood of martyrs is the seed of Christians,” meaning that Christianity thrives under persecution. This certainly appears to be the case now, as Christianity is flourishing, for example, in China and Africa, while growth is markedly slower in Europe and much of the first world. If current trends continue, China will have the largest Christian population of any nation in the world in just 15 years.

So as Islamic extremists try to eradicate Christianity in its birthplace, and still others attempt to stamp it out in where it is growing fastest—Africa and China—the west seems somewhat complacent, and rests on the sacrifices of prior generations. Moreover, the western response seems often what has been called the “embarrassed silence of Christians in face of anti-Christian persecution.”

The true tragedy would be for those who take their religious freedom for granted to become numb to the sufferings of their brothers and sisters who are shedding their blood in faithfulness to their beliefs.

...Christianity thrives under persecution. This certainly appears to be the case now, as Christianity is flourishing, for example, in China and Africa...

In response to so many who beat their chests and demand from God an answer as to why He allows so much death and destruction in the world, this is at least one component of the answer.

The true tragedy would be for those who take their religious freedom for granted to become numb to the sufferings of their brothers and sisters who are shedding their blood in faithfulness to their beliefs.

This indeed is a great tragedy. One of shocking proportions.

Nearly 50 Christian churches were set alight in Niger during protests against published cartoons of Prophet Mohammed in a Charlie Hedbo, a satirical weekly.

MOSCOW, January 19 (Sputnik) – As many as 45 churches were set on fire in Niger’s capital city of Niamey during weekend protests against the publishing of cartoons depicting Prophet Mohammed, AFP reports, citing local police.

The protests were sparked by the decision of Charlie Hebdo, a French satirical weekly, to place a caricature image showing the prophet holding a "Je Suis Charlie" sign on the cover of its first issue since the January 7 attack, which claimed lives of 12 people.
At least ten people were killed in Niamey and Zinder, the second largest city in the country, on Friday and Saturday. More than 170 people were injured during violent protests.

A Christian school and an orphanage were also torched, AFP reported Adily Toro, a spokesman for Niger’s national police, as saying.

Rallies protesting against the Charlie Hebdo cartoons were also held in the former French colonies of Mali, Senegal and Mauritania, as well as in Pakistan and Algeria.

NAIROBI, Kenya (Morning Star News) – A 12-year-old girl who was hospitalized for two weeks after her Muslim father beat her and her sister for converting to Christ last month is traumatized after learning that her sister died from the assault, sources said.

Naigaga Saidah’s father, Imam Abudalah Ali of Bwita mosque in Kaliro District, allegedly beat to death her 15-year-old sister, Namugonya Jamirah, on Dec. 11 after the sisters put their trust in Christ at a five-day evangelistic event that ended that day. Beaten unconscious, Naigaga did not learn of her sister’s death until a pastor had transferred her to safety in another town on Jan. 7, sources said.
“Saidah needs prayers, trauma counseling and medication for the left side of her hip that was injured by the father,” a source whose name is withheld for security reasons told Morning Star News.
After the Dec. 7-11 evangelistic campaign at Bwita trading center in the Nakibungulya area of Kaliro District, a neighbor told Ali that his daughters had become Christians, sources said. That afternoon, 17 Muslims arrived at the venue of the evangelistic meeting, but the participants had left, a source said.
“Their father got the information that his daughters have converted, and he organized a small group of fellow Muslims, about 17 people, to go and attack the Christians,” a source said. “He found the campaign had finished but went back to his home and waited for the daughters. When they went back home, the father picked up the club and started beating them badly till one called Jamirah died.”
Saidah managed to escape when her father went inside the house to look for water to splash her back to consciousness, the source said. She arrived limping in blood-stained clothes at a pastor’s house.
The following day the pastor and another Christian leader went to Ali’s home, learned that Jamirah was dead and reported it to police. Officers arrived at Ali’s house on Dec. 12 and arrested him. He was charged with murder but denied it, claiming that Jamirah died from a motorcycle accident.
His wife and two sons supported his statement, and Ali was released on bail on Dec. 13. The same day, Ali officially disowned Saidah for leaving Islam for Christianity before a Kaliro Local Council official.
Saidah described her ordeal to Morning Star News by phone.

“My father took us to the house and then locked the house,” she said. “He questioned us why we attended a Christian meeting and started beating us up with a club. My sister was hit on the forehead and fell down. I tried to hide myself in the bed, but he got me out and began beating me up as my sister lay down bleeding.”
Saidah began shouting for help, but her father covered her mouth with such force that she nearly suffocated, she said. She fell down, unconscious.
“Later on I realized that my clothes were soaked with water as I regained my consciousness, and my father had left,” she said. “I got up and went to the pastor’s house, which is about 30 minutes’ walk. I arrived there at 7 p.m.”
The pastor took her to a medical clinic, where she was treated for two weeks, while her father began organizing area Muslims to kill her, sources said. The pastor sent her to a Christian leader in another undisclosed town on Jan. 7. When Saidah learned then that her sister had died, she fainted and remained another two days in a nearby hospital.
“The police were later bribed and accepted the words of Ali, and he was released on bail,” one source said. “When he came home he went to the [local] chairman and said that he had disowned Saidah, and that if she tries to go back that she will be killed just like her sister, and that he is leaving Saidah in the hands of born-again Christians.”
The chairman summoned the Christian leaders and informed them of what Ali had told him. They told Ali to put his decision to disown her in writing.
“Saidah has been traumatized, is still limping and she is in a need of the prayers, counseling, medical support, and school fees, because she is going to primary seventh grade this year,” he said.

Islamic State seizes Christians again – this time in northeastern Syria

Monitoring groups say militants have kidnapped at least 70 people from Assyrian Christian villages that border territory that IS controls in Iraq. Some speculate IS may be seeking a prisoner swap.

Islamic State fighters have reportedly abducted at least 70 people from Assyrian Christians villages in northeastern Syria, reigniting concerns about the plight of religious minorities in regions under threat of IS attacks.
The British-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said the extremist fighters raided rural villages inhabited by the ancient Christian minority west of Hasaka, a city mainly held by the Kurds, around dawn on Monday.
The abductions come barely a week after militants affiliated with the Tripoli Province of Islamic State in Libya – a Libyan group that pledged allegiance to IS last year – released a video showing the beheading of 21 Egyptian Coptic Christians.

The Observatory, which relies on a network of activists inside Syria, said IS captured 90 Assyrians in the raids. A Demand For Action, a separate activist group that focuses on religious minorities in the Middle East, put the number between 70 and 100.

Both groups said that most of the captives come from the village of Tal Shamiram. The village is located along the banks of Khabur River about 50 miles southwest of the provincial capital of Qamishli.
It was not immediately clear what IS planned to do with the Assyrians. While execution is possible, the extremist group also could use its new captives to try to arrange a prisoner swap with the Kurdish and Christian militias that it has been fighting in the region.
The Associated Press reports that there is a precedent for such a deal: IS released Kurdish schoolchildren and Turkish truck drivers and diplomats after holding them for months.
The BBC reports that some Assyrians managed to escape and made their way east to Hassakeh.
Meanwhile, Syrian Kurdish militias have renewed their assault on the militants in northeastern Syria to try to recapture the town of Tal Hamis. They launched two offensives against them on Sunday, helped by US-led airstrikes and artillery support from Iraqi peshmerga. As Reuters reports:

This part of Syria is strategically important in the fight against Islamic State because it borders territory controlled by the group in Iraq, where last year the ultra-hardline group committed atrocities against the Yazidi community.
Tel Tamr, a town near the Assyrian Christian villages where the abductions occurred, has witnessed heavy clashes between Islamic State fighters and the Kurdish YPG militia, the Observatory said.

On Monday, a Kurdish official told the BBC that the Popular Protection Units (YPG) had forced IS militants back to within three miles of Tal Hamis. The Observatory confirmed the advance by the YPG and said at least 12 IS fighters had been killed.
The Observatory reports that US-led airstrikes against IS in Syria have killed more than 1,600 people, mostly jihadists, since they began five months ago. The US and a small number of Arab countries began targeting the extremist group in Syria last year, expanding operations with a broader coalition already under way in Iraq.

At least 14 people have been killed after al-Shabaab gunmen stormed a university in Kenya, opened fire on dormitories and began separating Muslim and Christian students.

Heavy gunfire was reported in the early hours of Thursday morning at the Garissa University College, 120 miles from the Somalian border, when militants attacked the building. There were 815 students inside at the time and only 280 have been accounted for so far.

Kenya’s National Police Service said armed militants shot at campus guards to gain entry, triggering a “fierce shootout”. The attackers still managed to get inside one of the student dormitories and some students remain trapped inside. A spokesman for al-Shabaab said the group is inside the campus and has released Muslim students.

“We’ve killed many people; Kenyans will be shocked when the go inside,” he was quoted by the BBC as saying.

The number of hostages being held by the group is not known. Police and military forces say they are now trying to “flush out” gunmen from the campus. The Kenyan Natural Disaster Operation Centre said 65 had been injured.

It said one suspected terrorist was arrested as he tried to flee the scene.

A policeman at the scene said he has counted 14 bodies being carried out of the campus by a Red Cross Ambulance….

MISSION ACCOMPLISHED: Obama manages to condemn the Islamic terrorist attack on Christians at a university in Kenya without ever mentioning the words “Muslims” or “Christians”

Not only does he avoid any mention of the fact that 150 Christians students were slaughtered by al-Shabaab Islamic terrorists because they were Christians, he vows to stand with the Kenyan government that he campaigned against in 2008 in order to get his al-Qaeda linked cousin, Raila Odinga, into office there.





Below is the official White House statement from Obama. Inexcusable, but not unexpected, from the man who raised money for a candidate with a history of violence against Christians in Kenya.

Apparently Obama offered strong support to Odinga, a known inciter of sectarian violence and committed communist. Odinga's followers committed untold atrocities against Christians following his loss in the presidential election.

It does not surprise me that Obama supports this piece of human garbage. The two have seemingly identical ideologies.

I was talking to a friend at work. He's a pretty staunch conservative, if not a little mainstream for my taste. I mentioned my views on Obama's leanings toward his Islamic roots and what I believe he plans on doing in this nation. My friend immediately surrounded himself with a completely ignorant view and denied Obama was doing anything reprehensible. He said "Oh, he's not that bad at all." I instantly terminated our conversation realizing the veil of ignorance is very widespread indeed.

A shocking new video appearing to show at least 30 Christians being beheaded and shot by ISIS has been released.

The 29-minute video, titled 'Until It Came To Them - Clear Evidence', shows dozens of militants holding two separate groups captive in Libya.

At least 16 men, described by Islamic State as the 'followers of the cross from the enemy Ethiopian Church', are lined up in a desert area while 12 others are filmed being forced to walk down a beach.

Ethiopia was unable to confirm its citizens were killed in the footage but condemned the 'atrocious act', a government official said.

The video shows the men at the coast wearing Guantanamo-style orange jumpsuits and being held at the neck by fighters in combats with balaclavas covering their faces. The victims inland are forced to kneel as militants dressed in combats and green masks stand behind them holding rifles.

It starts with what it called a 'history of Christian-Muslim relations', which includes scenes of militants destroying churches, graves and icons.

A masked fighter in black then brandishes a pistol as he vows to kill Christians if they do not convert.

In an apparent reference to Ethiopia's attacks on neighbouring Somalia, whose population is almost entirely Muslim, he says: 'Muslim blood shed under the hands of your religions is not cheap. To the nation of the cross we are now back again.'

The footage, which was released on websites and social media accounts officially linked to ISIS, also cuts to Christians in Syria explaining how they were given the choice of converting to Islam or paying a 'special tax'.

At the end it switches between the two sets of captives - thought to be mainly migrant workers - with one group shot dead at point-blank range and the others beheaded on the beach. The video has not yet been verified.

CHRISTIANITY IN ETHIOPIA

Ethiopia is a predominantly Christian country with the religion being introduced in the country the 4th century, making it one of the oldest Christian states in the world.

The Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church is one of the oldest organized Christian bodies in the world, and more than 40 per cent of the population are members of the church.
Around 20 per cent of the population follow other branches of Christianity, a majority being Protestant.

Islam was not introduced in the country for another 300 years, and now about one third of Ethiopians identify as Muslim.

Initial reports did not make clear who the captives were or when they were captured.

The video bore the official logo of the IS media arm Al-Furqan and resembled previous footage released by the extremist group.

Redwan Hussein, an Ethiopian government spokesman, said: 'We have seen the video but our embassy in Cairo has not been able to confirm that the victims are Ethiopian nationals. Nonetheless, the Ethiopian government condemns the atrocious act.'

He added that Ethiopia, which does not have an embassy in Libya, would help repatriate Ethiopians if they wanted to leave. Libyan officials were not immediately available for comment.

It comes just two months after IS militants filmed themselves beheading 21 captured Egyptian Christians on a similar beach, which immediately drew Egyptian airstrikes on the group's suspected positions in Libya.

Whether Ethiopia would - or could - respond with similar military force remains unclear.

Islamic State has been able to gain a foothold amid chaos in Libya, where two governments backed by rival alliances of militias are battling each other as well as extremist groups.

The group is also advancing in Iraq, where it has captured three villages near the city of Ramadi.

More than 90,000 people have fled the ISIS's advance in Anbar, a United Nations humanitarian agency said earlier this morning.

The Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs said in a statement that civilians are fleeing Ramadi as well as the three nearby villages captured by the IS group a few days ago.

Lise Grande, the UN humanitarian coordinator for Iraq, said: 'Our top priority is delivering life-saving assistance to people who are fleeing - food, water and shelter are highest on the list of priorities.'

Iraqi officials in Anbar have described Ramadi as a ghost town, with empty streets and closed shops.

Iraqi troops backed by Shiite militias and U.S.-led airstrikes managed to dislodge ISIS, which controls large parts of Iraq and Syria and wants to redraw the map of the Middle East, from the northern city of Tikrit earlier this month.

But the troops have struggled against the militants in Anbar, which saw some of the heaviest fighting of the eight-year U.S. military intervention that ended in 2011.

“DR Congo – Christians killed, as thousands flee continuing Islamist violence,” World Watch Monitor, May 6, 2016:Islamist militants are suspected to have killed between 20 and 40 villagers in the eastern extremes of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, according to news reports and a World Watch Monitor source.

Attackers carried machetes and axes into a village in North Kivu province, in eastern DRC, late in the evening on 3 May.

“Between 20:00 and 22:00, the enemy managed to get past army positions and kill peaceful residents in their homes, slashing their throats,” local administrator Bernard Amisi Kalonda told Agence France-Presse. “The 16 bodies are in front of me, killed by machete or axe.”

A local Christian missionary told World Watch Monitor on 4 May that thousands of people have fled the area.

“It was eerie; hundreds of houses abandoned and thousands of people displaced,” the missionary said. “I saw four coffins and a funeral or two on the road. I saw people carrying their mattresses and things in cars, on motorcycles, on foot.
