I was looking for a SIMPLE diagram on various types of sailing rigs to give me the nomenclature for something I'm studying.

Anyway, that came up and I thought it was worth posting. A few years back - probably three - I was reading some books, mostly adventure stuff on sailing in the 1700s and about pirates and several of them used a lot of terms I wasn't (and still am not too) familiar with. The terms were for big ships with several masts, square rigged vessels, with a bunch of different names for sails.

Anyway, I never could find anything to show me what I was reading. So, I figured this would be good for someone interested in the subject at some point

Sailboats I typically sail have one mast (called a sloop) and usually two, or three sails up at any given instance. Usually a main sail, a jib and possibly a "foresail" on a cutter rigged sloop (two front sails basically).

There are "halyards" to hoist the sails up, sheets to control the sails (main sheet and jib sheets) and a few other lines to be concerned with - but a vessel that big, I don't even want to think about trying to move one.
