Nasa Defies Theory: Showcases Prototype of 'Warp Drive' That Travels Faster Than Light

    • View PhotoNasa Defies Theory: Showcases Prototype of 'Warp Drive' That Travels Faster …

US space research agency Nasa which recently designed a 'flying saucer' like spacecraft in a bid to assist future human expeditions to Mars, has now showcased the 3D prototype of what could be its 'faster than light' spacecraft.
The 'faster than light' spaceship concept termed 'warp drive' was shown off by Nasa researcher Dr Harold White, the brain behind the space vehicle.
Nasa's Warp Drive spacecraft is based on the 1944 Alcubierre drive which gives a speculative idea derived from a solution of Albert Einstein's field equations in general relativity. The theory proposed by Miguel Alcubierre states that a spacecraft could attain speeds faster than light if a configurable energy-density field lower than vacuum could be created.
Alcubierre's theory also states that a faster-than-light spacecraft would travel by contracting space in front of it, and expanding space behind. This phenomenon is said to provide the faster-than-light thrust to the spaceship.
However, space scientists throughout the world haven't succeeded in building spacecraft with extraordinary speeds. This is in conjunction with the 'speed of light' theory.
The warp drive spacecraft can be seen in the hugely famous 'Star Trek' movie franchise, and the entire concept is only theoretical as of now.
But the 3D impression created by Nasa displays a spacecraft like vehicle stationed in the middle of two really huge rings that are assumed to serve as the 'warp bubble' to the spacecraft, according to Mark Rademaker, the artist behind the Nasa's 3D Warp Drive model.
According to Dr Harold White, space vehicles equipped with warp drives can attain speeds faster than that of light. The warp drive needs a robust design mechanism that allows the spacecraft to traverse by deforming the space surrounding space.
Nasa's faster-than-light interstellar vehicle has been tentatively code named the IXS Enterprise. Check out the 2013 video below to know more about the technology behind the IXS enterprise.

Behold IXS Enterprise, NASA’s latest warp drive starship concept

Science! By Ryan Whitwam Jun. 11, 2014 3:41 pm
NASA’s Advanced Propulsion team gets to work on some of the most interesting and vexing problems in space travel. The unit is led by Dr. Harold White, who has popped up on the internet several times talking about the theoretical underpinnings of faster-than-light travel. In a world where so many of us grew up with Star Trek warp drives, that’s sure to raise some eyebrows. Dr. White and artist Mark Rademaker have now revealed a new design concept for a warp drive ship that takes into account recent theoretical studies of the Alcubierre warp drive. Of course, the ship is called IXS Enterprise.

Before you get too excited, no, it doesn’t actually exist and no one is building it. This is a concept design only. The interesting thing is that an Alcubierre warp drive (named after physicist Miguel Alcubierre) could maybe exist in the future. As Alcubierre says, there’s nothing about the mathematics of this device that violates the laws of nature as we understand them.

An Alcubierre drive relies upon a dual ring structure made of extremely dense exotic matter that surrounds a central pod where the crew and cargo reside. When supplied with enough power, the Alcubierre drive can create a bubble of stable space around the craft while warping it in front and behind. This would allow the ship to move at sub-relativistic speeds, but cover incredible distances in real space.

The updated design of IXS Enterprise changes a few things about the layout of the rings. They have rounded edges now and are placed closer together. The central pod is more compact and football-shaped in this iteration as well. These alterations are based on work Dr. White did recently that showed the energy requirements of an Alcubierre drive may be much lower than originally believed. Rather than a Jupiter-sized mass of energy, the drive would only consume a little less than a ton of matter converted to energy (that’s still a lot).

This is all remains far beyond our current level of technology, but at least the IXS Enterprise looks really cool at this stage. You can see more images on Mark Rademaker’s Flickr page.

NASA unveils its futuristic warp drive starship – called Enterprise, of course

NASA scientist and Advanced Propulsion Team Lead Harold White has the kind of job thousands dream of and few achieve — he’s in charge of the space agency’s efforts to determine if a faster-than-light warp drive is actually possible and, if it is, how we might create one. Now, in conjunction with artist Mark Rademaker, White has unveiled a new starship model that illustrates how our consideration of the concept has evolved over the decades. Rademaker designed the first theoretical warp ship concept to consciously echo the Matt Jeffries design for the UEV-47; the first faster-than-light version of the Starship Enterprise. This new version of the ship is chunkier, more compact, and according to Harold White, a better match for what the mathematics of an Alcubierre warp drive currently predict.

[Image by Mark Rademaker. More images are available on Flickr.]

And of course, she’s called the IXS Enterprise.Have we found any proof a warp drive can exist?

While a pretty concept design is nice, it still isn’t clear if a warp drive can actually exist. NASA’s current experiments are an attempt to measure whether the warp bubble Alcubierre theorized could exist can exist in our universe. There’s an enormous gap between saying “Mathematically this doesn’t violate any of the known laws of physics,” and saying “We’ve detected an actual warp bubble in the real world.”

The inferometer experiment White oversees is designed to measure such an effect at nanoscale. Currently, data is inconclusive — the team notes that while a non-zero effect was observed, it’s possible that the difference was caused by external sources. More data, in other words, is necessary. Failure of the experiment wouldn’t automatically mean that warp bubbles can’t exist — it’s possible that we’re attempting to detect them in an ineffective way.

Nonetheless, the fact that we’re struggling to even discover if a warp bubble can form is evidence of how much work remains until we could plausibly tap the effect for space exploration. This new ship is as much a PR move as a demonstration of capability — but the implications of a warp bubble that allowed for even fractional light-speed travel are enormous. The ability to move at 1% the speed of light would put the entire Solar System within our reach; 0.1% light speed would make exploration and colonization of Mars or the Moon a much simpler problem.

In Harold White’s possible Alcubierre warp drive, the ring around the starship creates a “warp bubble” that allows for faster-than-light travel inside it.

One good piece of news is that early fears that a hypothetical warp drive could be a star system-annihilating event have been disproven by a better evaluation of the mathematics. New data suggests this is unlikely to be an issue, though vessels observing the warp drive ship in close proximity could still be at risk. Energy requirements have also come down sharply, from Alcubierre’s initial calculation that planetary-sized power sources would be required to more recent data that suggests we could build a ship with a power source the size of Voyager 2 — if we can create the necessary effect at the appropriate scale. [Read: The hunt for alien, star-encompassing Dyson Spheres begins.]

For now, a warp drive remains science fiction — but if we can ever build one, the impact on human civilization could rival the invention of fire. Despite some bombastic reporting in other places, it’s not a “real-life” Enterprise — not yet — but the fact that news of warp drive research continues to grab headlines is an example of just how exciting this technology could be.

For more on NASA’s warp drive tech, scrub through to the 40:30 mark in the video below and listen to White discuss the ship at SpaceX’s SpaceVision 2013 conference.

    From 2012:

How NASA might build its very first warp drive

A few months ago, physicist Harold White stunned the aeronautics world when he announced that he and his team at NASA had begun work on the development of a faster-than-light warp drive. His proposed design, an ingenious re-imagining of an Alcubierre Drive, may eventually result in an engine that can transport a spacecraft to the nearest star in a matter of weeks — and all without violating Einstein's law of relativity. We contacted White at NASA and asked him to explain how this real life warp drive could actually work.

The above image of a Vulcan command ship features a warp engine similar to an Alcubierre Drive. Image courtesy CBS.
    The Alcubierre Drive

The idea came to White while he was considering a rather remarkable equation formulated by physicist Miguel Alcubierre. In his 1994 paper titled, "The Warp Drive: Hyper-Fast Travel Within General Relativity," Alcubierre suggested a mechanism by which space-time could be "warped" both in front of and behind a spacecraft.

    Expand

Michio Kaku dubbed Alcubierre's notion a "passport to the universe." It takes advantage of a quirk in the cosmological code that allows for the expansion and contraction of space-time, and could allow for hyper-fast travel between interstellar destinations. Essentially, the empty space behind a starship would be made to expand rapidly, pushing the craft in a forward direction — passengers would perceive it as movement despite the complete lack of acceleration.

White speculates that such a drive could result in "speeds" that could take a spacecraft to Alpha Centauri in a mere two weeks — even though the system is 4.3 light-years away.

    Expand

In terms of the engine's mechanics, a spheroid object would be placed between two regions of space-time (one expanding and one contracting). A "warp bubble" would then be generated that moves space-time around the object, effectively repositioning it — the end result being faster-than-light travel without the spheroid (or spacecraft) having to move with respect to its local frame of reference.

"Remember, nothing locally exceeds the speed of light, but space can expand and contract at any speed," White told io9. "However, space-time is really stiff, so to create the expansion and contraction effect in a useful manner in order for us to reach interstellar destinations in reasonable time periods would require a lot of energy."

And indeed, early assessments published in the ensuing scientific literature suggested horrific amounts of energy — basically equal to the mass-energy of the planet Jupiter (what is 1.9 × 1027 kilograms or 317 Earth masses). As a result, the idea was brushed aside as being far too impractical. Even though nature allowed for a warp drive, it looked like we would never be able to build one ourselves.

"However," said White, "based on the analysis I did the last 18 months, there may be hope." The key, says White, may be in altering the geometry of the warp drive itself.
    A new design

In October of last year, White was preparing for a talk he was to give for the kickoff to the 100 Year Starship project in Orlando, Florida. As he was pulling together his overview on space warp, he performed a sensitivity analysis for the field equations, more out of curiosity than anything else.

    Expand

"My early results suggested I had discovered something that was in the math all along," he recalled. "I suddenly realized that if you made the thickness of the negative vacuum energy ring larger — like shifting from a belt shape to a donut shape — and oscillate the warp bubble, you can greatly reduce the energy required — perhaps making the idea plausible." White had adjusted the shape of Alcubierre's ring which surrounded the spheroid from something that was a flat halo to something that was thicker and curvier.

He presented the results of his Alcubierre Drive rethink a year later at the 100 Year Starship conference in Atlanta where he highlighted his new optimization approaches — a new design that could significantly reduce the amount of exotic matter required. And in fact, White says that the warp drive could be powered by a mass that's even less than that of the Voyager 1 spacecraft.

That's a significant change in calculations to say the least. The reduction in mass from a Jupiter-sized planet to an object that weighs a mere 1,600 pounds has completely reset White's sense of plausibility — and NASA's.
    Hitting the lab

Theoretical plausibility is all fine and well, of course. What White needs now is a real-world proof-of-concept. So he's hit the lab and begun work on actual experiments.

"We're utilizing a modified Michelson-Morley interferometer — that allows us to measure microscopic perturbations in space time," he said. "In our case, we're attempting to make one of the legs of the interferometer appear to be a different length when we energize our test devices." White and his colleagues are trying to simulate the tweaked Alcubierre drive in miniature by using lasers to perturb space-time by one part in 10 million.

Of course, the interferometer isn't something that NASA would bolt onto a spaceship. Rather, it's part of a larger scientific pursuit.

"Our initial test device is implementing a ring of large potential energy — what we observe as blue shifted relative to the lab frame — by utilizing a ring of ceramic capacitors that are charged to tens of thousands of volts," he told us. "We will increase the fidelity of our test devices and continue to enhance the sensitivity of the warp field interferometer — eventually using devices to directly generate negative vacuum energy."

He points out that Casimir cavities, physical forces that arise from a quantized field, may represent a viable approach.

And it's through these experiments, hopes White, that NASA can go from the theoretical to the practical.
Waiting for that "Chicago Pile" moment

Given just how fantastic this all appears, we asked White if he truly thinks a warp-generating spacecraft might someday be constructed.
"Mathematically, the field equations predict that this is possible, but it remains to be seen if we could ever reduce this to practice."

    Expand

What White is waiting for is existence of proof — what he's calling a "Chicago Pile" moment — a reference to a great practical example.

"In late 1942, humanity activated the first nuclear reactor in Chicago generating a whopping half Watt — not enough to power a light bulb," he said. "However, just under one year later, we activated a ~4MW reactor which is enough to power a small town. Existence proof is important."

His cautious approach notwithstanding, White did admit that a real-world warp drive could create some fascinating possibilities for space travel — and would certainly reset our sense of the vastness of the cosmos.

"This loophole in general relativity would allow us to go places really fast as measured by both Earth observers, and observers on the ship — trips measured in weeks or months as opposed to decades and centuries," he said.

But for now, pursuit of this idea is very much in science mode. "I'm not ready to discuss much beyond the math and very controlled modest approaches in the lab," he said.

Which makes complete sense to us, as well. But thanks to these preliminary efforts, White has already done much to instill a renewed sense of hope and excitement over the possibilities. Faster-than-light travel may await us yet.

I think the ET version of space travel is more likely.

That is, you focus intense gravity at a point in space and draw it to you, then you step across and release the hold. Space snaps back and you've moved billions of miles in an instant.

Now as to the actual engineering of that little miracle, I'm going to have to leave up to my grey and nordic buddies.

    lol

    "grey and nordic" buddies.

I suspect that we're going to be able to do it eventually. There's enough information and evidence in physics to leave loopholes.

I also suspect that, given the size of this universe, there's already some kind of interstellar travel going on - perhaps even intergalactic travel but on a scale so small we won't see it.

On the other hand... there's nothing in physics saying "warping" is impossible. Doubt we'll see much movement in solving the equations in OUR lifetimes - and perhaps not for a few hundred more years, but honestly, the human race has some smart people who might be able to figure it out if they put their minds to it.

Gary McKinnon and the hack of the century

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gary_McKinnon

Gary McKinnon (born 10 February 1966) is a Scottish[1] systems administrator and hacker who was accused in 2002 of perpetrating the "biggest military computer hack of all time," although McKinnon himself...states that he was merely looking for evidence of free energy suppression and a cover-up of UFO activity and other technologies potentially useful to the public.

Gary watched the 2001 Disclosure Project National Press Club conference testimonies and decided to look for the evidence himself.

He claimed the administrator passwords on most of the computers were unset making it very easy to create a backdoor and then daisy chain from computer to computer. He only had a 56Kb modem. The security must have been virtually no existent.

He found two bits of crucial evidence:

The first was a list of transfers for non-terrestrial officers aboard ships that were clearly not naval ships.

The second was verification of something Donna Hare, an ex NASA, claimed in he Disclosure Project Testimony. She alleged that she went into Johnson Space Center's Building 8 where a colleague showed here images, before and after UFOs had been scrubbed out before showing to the public. Donna was a member of a Houston Contactee club and had made it known that she was interested in UFOs will working at NASA and that is how the incident came to take place.

    Donna Hare Disclosure Project interview

Gary managed to hack his way, along a string of computers until he got into a console in Building 8 where he claims he found two folders marked something like Unfiltered and Filtered. He saw one craft clearly above the atmosphere which was no of this world.

This is a great interview by Project Camelot of Gary the one used in the recent Hangar 1 UFO Files S01E06 Space Weapons

    Project Camelot interviews Gary McKinnon

It took years of campaigning to get finally get Gary's extradition over turned and the experience was taking it's toll.

Many claimed that he had damaged hundreds thousands of dollars worth of Naval computers but there is no real evidence of that if anything he just highlighted there very poor security. That cost them a great deal to fix.

Pretty much as Gary decided to download the filtered and unfiltered images from NASA he got caught. At one point there was a list floating around the internet of the space craft. But it disappeared never to be found again if anyone could dig it up that would be a great challenge. I think his genuine motives make him a hero but other disagree.

In what US prosecutors have called the biggest military hack of all time, Scottish hacker, Gary McKinnon says it was all done in an effort to end secrecy regarding UFOs and Free Energy technology. McKinnon has been accused of hacking into computer systems belonging to NASA, the US Army, US Navy, Department of Defense, and the US Air Force. He is fighting extradition to the United States to be held on trial, and if extradited faces spending the rest of his life in prison, but were his efforts in vain, or did he really find something?

In all of his interviews, McKinnon talks about two UFO related finds. He told the Guardian newspaper that he thought what he found was so important that he tried to barter with the government. When first caught he was offered the chance to take a plea bargain and get a three to four year sentence. He turned the offer down to get a lesser sentence, threatening to release everything he found if they didn’t give him a better deal. Unfortunately for Gary, the US government wasn’t too worried about his revelations. Now he faces spending a 70 year sentence in a US prison, where they don’t serve tea and crumpets.

Lucy Clarke, McKinnon's girlfriend, is comforted at a protest. (credit: Cate Gillon/Getty Images Europe)

McKinnon was inspired by physician Dr. Steven Greer’ Disclosure project. Greer had brought together a number of very credible witnesses to testify in front of the Washington National Press Club that they had knowledge of the existence of Extraterrestrial visitation and that it was being hidden from the public. One of the witnesses said they knew that pictures from space were being altered at NASA’s Johnson’s space center; UFOs were allegedly being taken out of pictures.

McKinnon hacked into Johnson’s systems and said he found a high definition picture of a large cigar shaped object over the northern hemisphere. He said that he was so shocked by the picture that he didn’t think to immediately save it. He also said that the file size was so large that is was difficult to view it on his computer. Eventually his connection was lost, and so was the picture.

The most shocking find to McKinnon, the one he thought would be his ace in the hole negotiating with the US government, was what he found hacking into the systems of US Space Command. McKinnon says he found a log that listed non-terrestrial officers. He doesn’t believe that these were aliens, but he believes this to be evidence that the US military has a secret battalion in space. Some of these logs were ship to ship transfers, but he says he was usually smoking pot when he hacked, so that prevented him from remembering the names of the ships. McKinnon told the Gaurdian: “I was smoking a lot of dope at the time. Not good for the intellect.”

There are rumors that he has talked about the names of two of the ships he saw on the transfer logs, the names of the ships being the USSS LeMay and the USSS Hillenkoetter. Typically Navy ship names just have two S’, an acronym for United States Ship, however there are three S’ here, presumably standing for United States Space Ship. The names of the ships are also significant.

    General Curtis LeMay (credit: USAF)

General Curtis LeMay was friends with retired Air Force Reserve Major General and former U.S. Senator from Arizona, Barry Goldwater. Goldwater believed there was a UFO cover-up deep within the government, and suspected that his friend LeMay knew about it. There were rumors that there was UFO evidence being held in a secret room at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base called the blue room. Goldwater told the media several times that when he asked LeMay about this room, LeMay got upset and told him, “Not only can’t you get into it but don’t you ever mention it to me again.” Open Minds magazine will have an article going more into depth on Goldwater in the second issue.

The second ship’s namesake, Admiral Roscoe Hillenkoetter, was the first director of the CIA, and was also a member of a UFO research organization, the National Investigations Committee on Aerial Phenomena (NICAP). In 1960 the New York Times reported that Hillenkoetter had sent a letter to Congress that included this statement: “Behind the scenes, high-ranking Air Force officers are soberly concerned about UFOs. But through official secrecy and ridicule, many citizens are led to believe the unknown flying objects are nonsense.”

    Admiral Hillenkoetter (credit: USN)

Although Hillenkoetter fought for the end of UFO secrecy, he eventually stopped commenting on the matter. Alleged secret documents that were leaked to UFO researchers, list Hillenkoetter as a member of the infamous Majestic 12 group, an organization rumored to have been made up of high ranking military officers and civilians that was supposedly created by President Truman to initially manage the UFO issue.

However, the fact that McKinnon really released the names of these ships is also alleged, thus far there are no source for these rumors.

So that is it, the UFO picture that McKinnon saw and the ship rosters were all he had, and unfortunately for him, they were not enough to scare the government into going easy on him. Instead he has been fighting a long multi-year battle to keep from being extradited to the US, a fight that he is losing. So far every British court he has appealed to has denied his stay.

The US government is really throwing the book at him, alleging that he took down military computers making the US vulnerable soon after 911. McKinnon denies those claims, and says that he was able to observe many hackers from around the world accessing the networks he was on at the same time he was on them. Many believe that McKinnon may just be a scapegoat.

The search for truth on the UFO matter is a difficult one, and some may argue that the secrets being kept are illegal. However, taking illegal steps to get to the truth is ill-advised, and unfortunately McKinnon is learning this the hard way.
