    Default Victory garden

Back in the day my folks used to tell me of things called victory gardens. This came at a time when rationing was in effect. Ms. Luke enjoys growing plants so this has turned into quite a project. So far all I have invested is some sweat equaty. I ran the tiller did some watering and pulled a few weeds. Ms. Luke has been the brains behind this endeavor. She has done a fairly good job in my somewhat biased opinion. So far the only expense has been a slight increase in the cost of the water bill. Most of the plants and seeds were minimal. Here is a list of our homegrown produce. I wonder if any of the membes of this board do any victory gardening? Oh, the garden that is not in containers is in an area that is 20X30 feet.

    So far we have harvested:
    green squash
    yellow squash
    cucumbers
    beets
    green beans
    wax beans
    carrots
    onions
    cilantro
    4 different kinds of tomatoes
    chard
    celery
    musk melons
    brussel sprouts(not ready for harvest,yet)
    broccili
et potatoes (also not ready for harvest)
    radicchio
    radishes
    green bell peppers
    red bell peppers
    bak choy
    pablano peppers

We bought 20 dozen ears of corn for $20, which we took off the cob. We have about 40 lbs of kernnel corn in the freezer.

Ms. Luke has been using 2 different kinds of breadmachines so we have only purchased 2 or 3 loaves of bread this summer.

Coupled with our 8 chickens for eggs, we have been living fairly frugaly, if that is a word?

I am thinking next year of a copper based machine for making fuel, I may be completing the hillbilly cycle.

To complete the Hillybilly Cycle you actually must DRINK some of that fuel methinks.

Thunder Road? One of my favorite songs of all time. Not sure how that ties in which hooch and gardens.

    lol

The BALLAD of Thunder Road.... wonder if we are talking about the same Thunder Road... We're talking Robert Mitchum, not Bruce Springsteen here...

Copper pipes, making fuel... fuel is made from corn. Corn makes mountain dew too.... Moonshine. The Hillbilly Cycle.

Gosh Mal, you gotta get out of that city.

Songwriters: MITCHUM, ROBERT / RAYE, DON

Now let me tell the story, I can tell it all
About the mountain boy who ran illegal alcohol
His daddy made the whiskey, son, he drove the load
    When his engine roared,
They called the highway thunder road.
Sometimes into ashville, sometimes memphis town
The revenoors chased him but they couldn't run him
    Down
Each time they thought they had him,
    His engine would explode
He'd go by like they were standin' still on thunder
    Road.
    [ Lyrics from: http://www.lyricsmode.com/lyrics/r/r...nder_road.html ]
    [Chorus]
And there was thunder, thunder over thunder road
Thunder was his engine, and white lightning was his
    Load
There was moonshine, moonshine to quench the devil's thirst
The law they swore they'd get him, but the devil got
    Him first.
On the first of april, nineteen fifty-four
A federal man sent word he'd better make his run no
    More
He said two hundred agents were coverin' the state
Whichever road he tried to take, they'd get him sure as
    Fate.
Son, his daddy told him, make this run your last
Your tank is filled with hundred-proof,
You're all tuned up and gassed
Now, don't take any chances, if you can't get through
I'd rather have you back again than all that mountain
    Dew

    [Chorus]

Roarin' out of harlan, revving' up his mill
He shot the gap at cumberland,
    And screamed by maynordsville
With g-men on his taillights, roadblocks up ahead
The mountain boy took roads that even angels feared
    To tread.
Blazing' right through knoxville, out on kingston pike
Then right outside of Beardon, there they made the fatal
    Strike
He left the road at ninety, that's all there is to say
The devil got the moonshine and the mountain boy
    That day

Atip with the laying hens, Luke. After 18mos. (approximate) they're ready for soup. Otherwise you keep feeding them past their prime. Not cost effective_ they just quit laying after a while. Hang them from a tree and slit the throat_ that way you'll have a good chicken soup without the chicken running around with their head chopped off.

This will most likely be the last winter for the fowl. I figure around November I will be ready to kill something.

My 8th grade science fair project was an alcohol still, so I know a little about making hooch.

My thing was that corn mash smells like shit. It doesn't make corn alcohol appealing at all.
