Prosecutor: 3 Teens Charged In Beating Death Of Homeless Man In N.J.

2 13-Year-Olds, 14-Year-Old Remanded To Hudson Co. Youth Detention Center

Three teenagers were in custody Saturday morning, on charges of beating a homeless man to his death in Hoboken, N.J

As CBS 2’s Janelle Burrell reported, Hudson County Acting Prosecutor Gaetano T. Gregory said two 13-year-olds and a 14-year-old were charged in the Sept. 10 death of Ralph Eric Santiago, 46.

Police believe the teens were playing a sick game.

“They took a substantial part our life away,” said the victim’s former wife, Tracy Squillini. “My heart — a piece of my heart’s gone.”

On Saturday morning, a bouquet of flowers marked the exact spot where Santiago’s head was found lodged between two posts on a wrought iron fence. Family and friends never saw the attack coming.

Santiago was followed by the three teens while walking on 3rd Street between Adams and Jefferson Streets in Hoboken on Sept. 10 when one of the juveniles threw a punch at Santiago’s head in what detectives believe was a game of “knockout.” Santiago then collapsed onto the fence, wedging his neck between two iron fence posts, where he died, the prosecutor said.

“He was just a loving person – cared about everybody; very spiritual,” said a cousin of Santiago’s who declined to provide his name. “And it just wasn’t deserved.”

All three of the teens are from Jersey City. Homicide detectives believe they traveled on the Light Rail from Jersey City to Hoboken. Two of the juveniles surrendered to homicide detectives on Thursday, and one of them surrendered Friday, the prosecutor said.

Frank Colon has lived in the neighborhood for 10 years, and told WCBS 880’s Jim Smith he could not believe what happened.

“Tragic, and it makes me very afraid around our culture,” he said.

Colon said the teens’ parents share in some accountability.

“It’s hard for me to blame the kids, as it is to want to understand what the parents are doing,” he said.

Santiago’s family said the father of one was a onetime gymnast and artist, but was disabled after being attacked 27 years ago in the Bronx.

Squillini told the Jersey Journal Santiago was attacked from behind while walking with friends in a public housing complex in the Bronx. His head was repeatedly pounded into the sidewalk, leaving him in a coma for a month, according to Squillini.

The beating caused him severe brain damage and he was never the same again, family members said.

Santiago had been evicted from his apartment last year.

The arrests brought Santiago’s heartbroken family one step closer to justice.

“Until there’s a conviction, I’m not going to feel that closure,” Squillini said.

All three teenage suspects have been charged with murder and have been remanded to the Hudson County Youth Detention Center, the prosecutor said.

A Blendon Township woman was stabbed to death while jogging in a park near her home over the weekend, and police have charged a teenager who lived in a nearby group home with the slaying.

Jane E. Juergens, 55, was found dead with multiple stab wounds on the main trail of Ridgewood Park around 7 p.m. Sunday, Blendon Township police said. She lived on Saddle Lane E., not far from the park.
Jordan T. Stewart, 16, was charged yesterday with a delinquency count of murder in Juergens’ death. Stewart and Juergens did not know each other, township Police Chief John Belford said.

Stewart lived in a group home with three other boys at 5548 Copenhagen Dr., which is near the park. He was assigned to the group home, run by Consumer Support Services, by Franklin County Children Services last year.

According to a search warrant filed in Franklin County Municipal Court, Juergens’ body was found by township police officers after Willy Mutah, a staff member at the group home, called police shortly after 6 p.m. Sunday, to say Stewart was acting suspiciously.

Mutah said he had taken Stewart and another resident to the park late Sunday afternoon. After a short walk, they went to the parking lot and rested in the shade, but Stewart eventually went back into the woods. Shortly after that, Mutah saw a woman get out of a car in the parking lot and go jogging into the woods.
After about 20 minutes, Mutah said, he went to find Stewart, and met him as he ran out of the woods. He said that Stewart had scratches on him and a bruise under his eye. He told Mutah that he had tripped and fallen.

Mutah told police that when the three returned to the group home, Stewart immediately wanted to call his mother and was crying. He then took a shower and changed clothes.

After talking with Mutah, police went back to the park and saw the woman’s car still in the parking lot. Several officers began searching the trail and eventually followed blood to her body.

Yesterday, Juergens’ friends said she was an inspiration to others and “living her dream,” having just started her own business.

Neighbors on the quiet residential street near the group home said they’d had no problems with the boys there and would often see them playing basketball outside.

Stewart had been at the group home since August 2012, Franklin County Children Services spokeswoman Deborrha Armstrong said. He has been in the care of the agency off and on since 2010.

Juvenile Court records show that Stewart lived with his maternal grandmother but that she was unable to control his behavior. He was first found to be unruly by the court at age 11 in 2008.

His juvenile record includes delinquency charges of assault for striking another person at the group home over the head with a bathroom scale in July, and hitting a younger brother in the face with a broomstick at his grandmother’s home in 2010.

In August 2011, he was charged with delinquency counts of criminal damaging, accused of setting fire to a trash container at a bowling alley and petty theft for stealing two air guns from a Meijer store.

A case review filed with the Juvenile Court in August 2012 said Stewart “admits to having ongoing thoughts of violence toward others.”

Juergens, the mother of two adult sons, had worked for American Municipal Power for 22 years as vice president of human resources. She left this year to start her own consulting company, of which AMP was a client, said Kent Carson, spokesman for the company.

She was a member of Women on Fire, a national coaching and support organization for women.
Debbie Phillips, founder of Women on Fire, said Juergens had been one of the early members of the group. “She is just pure positive love and energy,” Phillips said.

Jan Allen, who knew Juergens through that group and other executive groups, called Juergens “a happy, optimistic, friendly, bubbly people person who cared a great deal about others.”

Prosecutors have filed a motion asking for the murder charge against Stewart to be transferred to adult court. A probable cause hearing has been set for next Tuesday.

The intersection at Avenue U and E. 58th St. near Kings Plaza Shopping Center in Brooklyn became the scene of a brutal attack by a group of black youths against a white couple driving through, authorities say.


A group of 10 black youths — one of them a 12-year-old girl — surrounded a white couple's car in Brooklyn, viciously beating the husband and yanking the wife to the pavement by her hair as they peppered the two with racial slurs, authorities said.
“Get those crackers!” some of them screamed, according to court papers. “Get that white whore!”
The confrontation erupted about 7 p.m. Monday, as the marauding group crossed Avenue U at E. 58th St. near Kings Plaza Shopping Center in Mill Basin.
Ronald Russo, 30, and his wife, Alanna, apparently had the green light and the husband honked at the group to get out of the way. The rowdy kids started kicking the car, according to the criminal complaint. Ronald Russo got out to check on potential damage to his vehicle.
And that’s when all hell broke loose.

Ronald Russo was dragged to the ground. Then he was punched and kicked in the head. He felt more blows all over his body, investigators said. He suffered a fractured nose, a broken septum, a blood clot and abrasions to his shoulder. He was treated and released from Beth Israel Medical Center.
In the midst of the attack, there was a steady chorus of epithets. “White motherf-----!” screamed the attackers, who ranged in age from 12 to 18.
Alanna Russo, 30, was calling 911 when the 12-year-old girl pulled the woman’s hair and threw her to the ground. The victim’s head slammed into the concrete. She suffered a black eye, bleeding and difficulty breathing, prosecutors said, but she refused medical attention.
Her husband’s iPhone was stolen during the melee, according to cops.
The kids scattered after the brazen attack. But two teens, Kashawn Kirton and Daehrell Finch, were arrested at a nearby Lowe’s store parking lot minutes afterward.

Kashawn Kirton, 18, believes he was wrongly accused of a hate crime because he was wearing the same outfit as a teen that allegedly attacked a driver near Kings Plaza on Monday.

Also arrested, cops said, were the 12-year-old girl and a 14-year-old boy.
Kirton, 18, of East Flatbush, who has no prior arrests, faces gang assault, harassment and menacing charges, all as hate crimes. He was released on $50,000 bond.
In an interview at his home Saturday evening, Kirton told the Daily News he would never be part of such an attack, noting he has Caucasian cousins.
“I have relatives who are white. Cousins and stuff,” said the freshman at St. Francis College. “My school is mainly white. More than half my friends are white. I wouldn’t use words like that.”
Kirton said he was inside a Lowe’s store when the beatdown happened outside and was arrested because he was wearing the same outfit as one of the assailants.

Finch, 17, of Gravesend, was charged with gang assault, assault, menacing and harassment but does not face hate-crime charges in Monday’s attack. He has prior arrests for assault, theft of services and trespass, officials said, and is being held on Rikers Island in lieu of $75,000 bond.
Cops are looking for six more suspects.
A man who answered the door at the victims’ Mill Basin home declined to comment on Saturday.
A neighbor said he’s seen no racial tension in the area. But “it’s different” near the Kings Plaza mall.
“It’s not just a black and white thing. It’s stupid teenagers thinking they can do whatever they want,” the neighbor said.

About a week ago, the wife and I were going someplace and group of "Youths" were crossing the street in front of us, they had the light of course. But they spread themselves out a bit - probably 7-8 of them.

The lights turned green while most were still crossing in the cross walk. They noted the light change and took their sweetassed time crossing. They were deliberately egging on the vehicles. I watched to see what was going to happen and someone blew a horn and started forward. The punk stopped and then thought better of it. All of a sudden, ALL the cars started moving.

The kids RAN like chickens scattering front of a fox, laughing their asses off.

Later when we were coming back through the area, the whole group was being talked to by police officers.


I'm thinking they were attempting to get something going.

VERY bad idea in Colorado Springs. Something like 1 out or 4 carry a weapon here. VERY bad idea to provoke the local population.

14-Year-Old Charged As Adult In Murder Of Danvers (Massachusetts) Teacher

A beloved Danvers High math teacher was found murdered in the woods near the school and a 14-year-old is being charged in the slaying, the DA announced today.

The news comes after Danvers public schools were closed down as police investigated the slaying of teacher Colleen Ritzer, District Attorney Jonathan Blodgett said.

"She was a very, very respected, loved teacher. At 24 years of age ... it's a terrible tragedy for the entire Danvers community," said Blodgett, adding "there is no reason to believe other suspects are involved."

Philip Chism was charged as an adult and pleaded not guilty at his arraignment in Salem District Court today. He was held without bail and the judge approved his defense lawyer's motion for a mental evaluation. Chism's next court date is Nov. 22.

The case took a dramatic turn when the teen was found wandering north on the southbound side of Route 1 at 12:30 a.m. today in Topsfield, the DA said. Local police earlier yesterday put out a bulletin asking for the public's help in finding Chism. Police added Chism had recently moved to town from Tennessee.

The DA said they also received a missing persons report an hour earlier for the teacher who had not come home from school and wasn't answering her cell phone. She was later found dead in the woods near the high school. The DA said police also found blood in a second-floor bathroom at the high school when they went looking for the teacher at 11:20 p.m. yesterday.

The DA would not say how the teacher was killed. They have yet to divulge any evidence linking the teen to the murder.

Police said Chism was last seen about 6 p.m. Tuesday at the Hollywood Hits movie theater in Danvers. Theater manager Scott Przybcien told the Herald that Chism saw the 4:30 p.m. screening of the Woody Allen film “Blue Jasmine.”

“All we know is, he bought a ticket, saw a movie and left. It was a fairly busy day. He blended right in,” Przybcien said. “I think he just was wandering, looking for a place to hide. A movie theater is a perfect place for that. That’s what we do for a living -- forget about life for two hours.”

A high school student told the Herald today the school superintendent alerted families via a robo telephone call earlier this morning that school was canceled due to "an ongoing investigation."

"It's just terrifying," said Danvers High senior Kendall Meehan, 17. "Nothing like this ever happens in Danvers."

Mary Duffy, who lives next door to the Ritzer family in Danvers, said she knew Colleen basically her whole life.

"If every family had a daughter like Colleen Ritzer, it would be a wonderful world.

"She always wanted to teach math. Her mother, I believe, is probably a math whiz," Duffy told the Herald. "She was a quiet, pleasant girl with many friends. She was just like the ideal daughter. She is. This family is a family of America, They are the ideal family, they are friendly, they are loving, close."

The 24-year-old Ritzer often used Twitter to stay in touch with her students, last tweeting two days ago geometry homework links. She also wrote on her profile: "Math teacher often too excited about the topics I'm teaching." She also shared personal thoughts, tweeting she loved the fall, coffee, ice cream and the movie "Home Alone." She would send out uplifting messages, including "find something good in every day ."

She also offered her students emotional help after the Boston Marathon bombings tweeting: "This world is a crazy place. Love who you love and live every day. Thoughts and prayers to those affected at the Boston Marathon."

Christian Veatch, 17, a senior, was in Ritzer’s math class last year.

“She’d just joke around. I loved her class,” said Veatch. “I hate math ... But she made it fun.”

He said one day she noticed he was having a bad day, and pulled him out into the hall and talked him through it.

“We ended up talking out in the hall for like 20 minutes. I walked in the class feeling a lot better, more happy. I was ready to do my work. In 20 minutes, she totally changed my attitude. It was amazing.”

Gail Wade, 49, whose son, Spencer, is a freshman at the school, said when they heard someone had been killed, at first they thought it was Chism. Of freshman Spencer Wade:

“We thought it was him,” she said. “Then they said it was a teacher. It was a big shock.”

A 14-year-old boy was with his Massachusetts math teacher for up to an hour after school before he allegedly killed her — and changed his blood-stained clothes before going to a movie and buying a Wendy’s meal with her credit card, according to local reports.

Philip Chism stayed behind when his Algebra 1 class was dismissed for the day after the Danvers High School teacher, Colleen Ritzer, asked him for time to prepare for a test on Tuesday, his classmates told the Boston Globe.

Ritzer, 24 — whose body was found early Wednesday dumped in the woods behind the school — asked the tall, lanky teen to stay after the bell when she caught him drawing during class, one student told the newspaper.

4 Arrested In Fatal Mugging Of Elderly Man (Mississippi)

Four people (That's debatable) have been charged with capital murder in the fatal mugging of 87-year-old Lawrence E. "Shine" Thornton of Greenville.

Assistant Police Chief Andrew Kaho told the Delta Democrat Times that Terrance Morgan and Edward Johnson, both 19; and Leslie Litt and Geblonski Murray, both 18, were arrested Monday. Kaho said each of the four is also charged with robbery and conspiracy to commit robbery.

They are being held without bond in the Washington County Jail pending an initial court appearance.

Kaho said police were called to Thornton's home at 5:30 p.m. Friday. He said Thornton had been accosted in his driveway by two men who "pushed him down and stole his wallet."

Thornton died Sunday at the University of Mississippi Medical Center in Jackson.

Women Sexually Assaulted During Home Invasion, Shooting

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind.– Police are looking for several suspects who broke into a northeast side home, shot a woman in her 50s, and sexually assaulted the woman and her daughter.

The incident occurred in the 800 block of E. 79th St. around 7:26 a.m. Tuesday.

The victim, a woman in her 50s, was transported to St. Vincent Hospital for a gunshot wound to the leg. She is listed in good condition.

A police report filed later indicated the woman and her daughter, in her 20s, had both been sexually assaulted during the incident.

“You know, we’ve had a few random burglaries and things you’d expect, but nothing like this,” said Mike Gamage who lives four doors down. “It’s scary.”

Police said they are searching for four to five black males in connection with the incident. The men stole three vehicles from the residence, but they were recovered about two hours later. Two vehicles were located near 62nd Street and Michigan Road and the third was found near 80th and Windcombe.

“The detectives and the police department are going to do everything they can to find out who did this and hold them accountable,” said IMPD Lt Christopher Bailey.

The family father was at home but was not injured during the incident.

Neighborhood sources say the suspects drove the mother and daughter to the Regions Bank branch at 93rd and Meridian to pull out cash. It’s unclear if that happened before or after the assaults and shooting.

Detectives were looking for possible connections to a similar home invasion robbery near 70th and Spring Mill Road last Thursday. That case also involved four or five black males forcing their way into a home before stealing from an ATM and driving off with the family’s Jeep. The vehicle was later recovered.

Open Letter To: “If I Had A Son” President Obama

Dear President Obama,


You stated in March of 2012 that “if you had a son, he would look like Trayvon Martin.” You also stated, “”All of us have to do some soul-searching to figure out how does something like this happen,” and in this same speech that you exhibited such heartfelt emotions regarding the injustice of the shooting of a youth in a case of self defense, you also stated, “when I think about this boy, I think about my own kids, and I think every parent in America should be able to understand why it is absolutely imperative that we investigate every aspect of this and that everybody pulls together, federal, state and local, to figure out how this tragedy happened.”


Well sir, Mr. President, I too am a parent. A parent of two girls similar in ages to your two daughters and I too have two daughters. I felt that the Martin/Zimmerman encounter was a tragedy with the way it ended but, I can also see where self defense can be misconstrued as ‘stand your ground’ and a direct order of cease and desist was not issued in that instance. That perhaps there needs to be stricter rules for engagement conduct with community watch persons, and I won’t rehash that which has been settled, fairly in my opinion, but get to the point of why I’m writing this open letter to you sir. I have two daughters as stated above, and I can state with confidence that they are good girls. Good but not perfect, raised by someone whom was raised with ”old world courtesies” to have manners and respect, raised to know right from wrong and if they aren’t sure to seek guidance. They have been attending church before they could even pronounce the word God and say Jesus without lisping. My daughters I am proud to say without boasting are excellent students, they have their struggles at time with school work, but refuse to miss a day at school even when they are sick. Mr. President, with all that said, I have one problem though, I fear your “if I had a son” types that roam among our cities with impunity because they feel they are bored, or misrepresented, discriminated against, and some let’s be clear on this, know the laws geared towards minor better than any wet behind the ears public defender and bank on the punishments being light. I fear “your sons” more than I will ever fear some White-Hispanic Community watch man.


I’m seeing a number of young Black teens, while giving the benefit of assuming that their parents/parent has taught them right from wrong are roaming about city and town streets engaging in an act of violence they refer to as a game by the name of ‘knock-out’! Knock-out from what I’m learning of it in media forums, is a game where you look for an unsuspecting victim and ‘sucker-punch’ them until as the title states they are knocked out! Yes sounds absolutely ludicrous doesn’t it? More so than how it sounds Mr. President, it’s dangerous, and illegal behavior. Let’s be clear this game is assault sir. This behavior also if you want to be frank about it, plays into the age-old-pre-civil rights era of “lord don’t let them be black” fear and stigma of being stereotyped as a thug, rogue, guilty by racial grouping that still crosses so many minds when a news report comes on. I have to be honest sir, I’m one of those that has that thought because I am so sick and tired Mr. President of Blacks aka African-Americans being grouped and perceived as savages when there are so many more important issues to address.


So Mr. President, because of this rampant and rapidly growing trend of violence to cure doldrums, and frankly some seem to just get a sick vicarious thrill from it. I fear when my oldest daughter, a teenager leaves my house to go anywhere without me. I can’t afford private security just as so many others can’t, and she may one day become a target herself by one of those delinquents or someone that is fed up with the lawlessness of Black youths seeking justice. You see unless I have a tattoo etched on their foreheads that states, “I’m not like those other teens”, how would anyone know that my daughter and so many other’s like her at her age and let’s just address the elephant in the room; black teenagers, are not the type of teenagers inclined to run amok like a lawless band of home-grown terrorist looking for innocent unsuspecting people to beat, shoot, and rob for the thrill?



Americans have had enough and are at their wits end with this frightening and dangerous youth violence! There are those I believe that are just a hair from snapping and becoming the sort of vigilantes that Zimmerman was accused of being. Americans have read and watched news reports of many crimes such as that of 88 year old Delbert Belton. Mr. Belton in case you missed this news story Mr. President was a WWII veteran, he was wounded in Okinawa, Mr. Belton sir, was outside to wait for a ride from a friend to go bowling when he became an innocent victim of a beating and robbery. Sad to say Mr. Belton’s story wasn’t the exception the year, this had been a year of crimes against innocent citizens or even foreigners visiting one of our states like the Australian Christopher Lane. Christopher Lane, Mr. President, played baseball ball for East Central University on scholarship and was visiting his girlfriend in Oklahoma this summer. Christopher Lane went out for a jog, and three teens driving around looking for someone to kill for the thrill to drive away their boredom found Christopher Lane. Oh but that’s right you issued a statement on this murder, some say in response because the Prime Minister of Australia called for a boycott on tourism to America. Mr. President, you stated, “there is an extra measure of evil in an act of violence that cuts a young life short.” I couldn’t agree more, but to me Mr. President, that addresses the act only and not the behavior nor the perpetrators of such evil, sorry but I was raised with this rule of thumb, “you reap what you sow and do unto others as you would have others do unto you” period! My mother, God rest her soul also would have followed that up with, “if you go out of this house and forget what you have been taught, and break a law, I will not stand in the laws way to protect you from what you have brought down upon yourself!” I pray that Christopher Lane’s family and friends are finding some solace through God’s merciful and healing powers. I can’t blame Australians or any country’s citizens fearing to travel and visit the U.S. of A., but I would also hate the fact that we are shunned because “America can’t get it’s violence under control.” Not to mention as a huge fan of free-market and capitalism opportunity advocate, the loss of revenue from a tourism boycott would be very detrimental to those citizens that built their business from the ground up, putting all their personal resources and efforts into making it a success!


Mr. President, I and so many that I know while have serious discussions with lately on the state of affairs in this nation feel a race war brewing, one that none of us want to see come to fruition. I feel that when the deaths of the Trayvon Martin’s and Hadiya Pendleton’s (both tragic and no disrespect intended) of this country are addressed, but the flip-side of teen violence is not in many cases, then people feel as if you Mr. President and those that align themselves with you politically or through friendships, particularly those that go by the title of civic/community leaders are being hypocrites. Yes I know, before someone states, it is not the President of the United States of America, a free republic, to address crimes committed in the streets of cities across the nation, but my answer to that is then please stop doing so with every gun death deemed appropriate towards addressing gun control and illegal immigrant rights. The President and his administration are so tirelessly seeking to reform one and eradicate an inanimate object used by another illegally with disregard to those that respect laws regarding firearm rights as well as the right to defend themselves.


Anytime a youth dies my heart breaks a little bit as I think of the loss to their loved ones, as it does for any senseless murder of a citizen of any age. I have shed many a tears reading the Chicago newspapers and national news stories online, but focusing on your hometown and mine, Chicago for the past several years has wrought more tears and fears for the safety of our youths from me. I am also aware of the fact that many of those murdered, are often times murdered by someone near their age, beaten by one of their peers, robbed, raped, and bullied. Yes many of those crimes too are committed by gangs, but so many are also not reported or front page headlined are by teens not in gangs. Just this past summer our city has had teens running through one of the world’s most well known tourist area for Chicago, and that was on the “magnificent mile”, Chicago’s premier location for hotels, shopping and dining. Flash mobs, massive mobs of teens that through social media pick a location, time and place to not sing and dance like flash mobs of the past, but to “wild-out” and become violent in behavior towards innocent pedestrians.


Mr. President we are approaching the holiday season very quickly in our nation, and I know that with everything that has been going on with the dismal failure of the healthcare.gov website, to the NSA spying upon Americans as well as the OOPS with the NSA caught spying on Chancellor Merkel of Germany. ”Houston we have a problem” moments seem to have been compounding, so yes you are a very busy and probably just darn tired as many forget you are just a mere mortal man, made of human flesh as they are, and a man looking forward to a slight reprieve to addressing the fires that keep flaring up. I would love to be able to be thankful this year, or at the very least in the coming year Mr. President for some real solutions and honest answers to how cities like Chicago can address this problem since so many of your political party abhor and abject to the ideas of stiffer legal penalties but believe in providing more benefits, seems like it’s a reward to some to throw more money into coffers that frankly, no one really knows where it goes towards youth “reform” and recreation.


A Chicago Teachers Union President Karen Lewis stated, “There’s something about these folks who love the kids but hate their parents” as well as “There’s something about these folks who use little black and brown children as stage props at one press conference while announcing they want to fire, layoff or lock up their parents at another press conference.” Well Mr. President, I am not one of those “rich White folks” and I don’t care if they are Black, Brown, White, Purple, Green or Orange to care about the direction our youth are headed and the violence they are so attracted to. As far as the press conference stage props, I think that ploy Mr. President has been played out even at the nation’s capital, yes I do recall many a press conference pictures and televised videos of children standing in the scene of a White person with a wealth in income that probably exceeds their own parents and many of those viewing. Thou shalt not covet nor shall thou cut their noses off to spite their face is another lesson I learned early in life.


Mr. President, as I sit down this year at the table on Thanksgiving, I will be giving thanks to those that do care about the youth of America. I will be giving thanks to those parents that everyday police their children themselves, these children unfortunately become prisoner’s sometimes to their homes with very little free-time-outside time, but at least they are safe is the mind-set of some. Sir these children that have to play indoors year round are like those where drone bombs fall upon a target but also create losses deemed civilian casualties from no wrong doing of their own, something Mr. President they didn’t foster or build. I will also be saying prayers for those that will have to face the holidays for the first time without a loved one, a loved one that didn’t die from an accident, or a disease, but a diseased in spirit yet salvageable minor soul. I pray this year for a President I will be clear to state that I didn’t vote for, but one I hope will show with full transparency some sort of response or leadership towards spearheading action for addressing the youth violence raging across this nation that is not always, let’s be clear on this fact perpetrated with a gun.

DETROIT — A suburban Detroit homeowner who shot a woman on his porch in the middle of the night is being charged in connection with the case, Wayne County prosecutors said Friday.
Theodore P. Wafer, 54, of Dearborn Heights, Mich., is being charged with second-degree murder and manslaughter in the death of Renisha McBride early Nov. 2, Wayne County Prosecutor Kym Worthy said.

Wafer fatally shot McBride, 19, in the face at about 3:40 a.m. as she stood on his home's porch. He told police he thought someone was breaking in and accidentally fired his 12-gauge shotgun.
The woman's relatives say she was seeking help.
Civil rights leaders have called for a thorough investigation of the case, saying McBride, who was black, was a victim of racial profiling. Authorities have not said Wafer's race.
The 19-year-old had been involved in traffic accident more than two hours before she was shot, according to Detroit police. Just before 1 a.m. Nov. 2, a witness called 911 to say a woman was speeding down a street, hit a parked vehicle, got out of her car and left.
She later returned to the scene but left again before police arrived. The porch on which she was shot was about six blocks from the accident scene and over the boundary into suburban Dearborn Heights.
On Thursday, a medical examiner's report noted that the woman's blood-alcohol content was 0.218%, nearly three times the legal limit for adult drivers in Michigan.
"All I know is that she was 19 years old, she was on a porch and she'd be alive today if he'd called 9-1-1," lawyer Gerald Thurswell, who represents McBride's family, said Thursday. He plans a news conference later Friday.

A Michigan homeowner today was charged with murder in the racially fraught death of Renisha McBride, a 19-year-old black woman who was shot in the face on his porch.


Wayne County prosecutor Kym Worthy said Friday that Theodore P. Wafer, 54, of Dearborn Heights, faces charges of second-degree murder and manslaughter in the death of McBride in the early morning hours of Nov. 2.


Wafer, who will also face a weapons charge, is expected to turn himself in to authorities and could be arraigned as early as Friday.

In recent days, Wafer’s attorney had called the shooting justified, but Worthy said prosecutors disagreed.


“These are the appropriate charges and he did not act in lawful self-defense,” Worthy said at a televised news conference.


The McBride family and civil rights supporters had called for an investigation into the woman’s death at the hands of a white man, and some supporters have compared it to the shooting of Trayvon Martin, an unarmed black teenager shot by George Zimmerman last year in a confrontation in Sanford, Fla. A jury acquitted Zimmerman of murder charges in that case, accepting that Zimmerman had acted in self-defense.


The cases are not exactly parallel since Zimmerman, a neighborhood watch volunteer who was off-duty, argued that he saw Martin on a public street and that the two had a confrontation during which Zimmerman said he was injured. Zimmerman said the pair grappled and he fired his gun at Martin during their fight.


In the McBride case, there has been no indication that the pair had physical contact. McBride’s family has said the woman was involved in a car accident and walked to Wafer’s home seeking help. She went on to the porch and Wafer fired a shotgun blast at her.


Under Michigan law, a person does not have to retreat into his home when confronted, Worthy told reporters, but for a shooting to be self-defense, “there has to be an honest and reasonable belief of death or grave bodily harm.”


Worthy said there is no indication that standard was met. She said evidence showed McBride knocked on the locked screen door, and that there was no evidence of forced entry.


Despite protests and calls by national civil rights leaders that the incident be investigated, Worthy insisted her office had acted without regard to the race of either party. “Race is not relevant to our charging decision.”


An autopsy released this week ruled McBride died of a gunshot wound to her face, meaning she was facing the homeowner when he fired. A toxicology report released Thursday showed she had alcohol and marijuana in her system.
