China is taking steps to strengthen bilateral ties with Mexico, one of the most important U.S. partners in Latin America, U.S. officials said. In 2005, three of the nine members of the ruling Chinese Communist Party Politburo Standing Committee — the collective dictatorship that runs China — visited Mexico.
The visits took place in September, May and January. The visits demonstrated China‘s efforts to influence the United States southern neighbor.
By contrast, between 1998 to 2004, only two Politburo standing committee members visited Mexico — Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao in December 2003 and President Jiang Zemin, who attended the October 2002 APEC meeting in Los Cabos.
China has identified its ties to Mexico as one of four "strategic partnerships" Beijing has designated in Latin America.
China is seeking the ties to re-export goods, mainly to the United States, Canada and Europe.
Differences on trade between the two countries remain.
