'24' Cancelled After 8 Seasons
The Fox action series "24" will not return for a ninth season.

Series star Kiefer Sutherland said in a statement that the show's cast and crew "always wanted '24' to finish on a high note, so the decision to make the eighth season our last was one we all agreed upon." He also said he was looking forward to creating a film version of "24."

The show won the Emmy for outstanding drama series and Sutherland garnered the outstanding lead drama actor trophy for his role as Bauer in 2006.

"News from the 24 set, the crew has been told that 24 has come to an end. There will b no season 9," series director Jon Cassar wrote on his Twitter feed Friday. "Its been a great run, thanx all 4 watching."

Ratings slipped during the thriller's eighth season and the show's expensive production costs and schedule also led to the cancellation, according to published reports.

The final two-hour episode will air May 24.
