I have a world phone that I use when I travel.
It supports all 4 frequencies used by cell phones, world wide.
The European system is GSM. GSM is INFERIOR to CDMA which is what we use in the USA. CDMA calls typically don't drop, have no echoes and is just a better overall system. This is changing somewhat as GSM catches up, but in a straight head to head fight, CDMA is better.
The issue is that US Telcos and their paid representatives in congress implemented CDMA with legal restrictions that resulted in a royal fuckjob to the citizens of the US. In the USA CDMA requires that the telco issue you the handset. This means, they can lock you into a plan, hold you hostage, give you shitty service and charge you a fee to get rid of them.
In a GSM system, you remove the SIM chip and pitch it in the trash and you're done with that TELCO. You can walk into any store, buy a phone, put your chip in it and you're done. You can borrow a friends phone, put your chip in it and give it back next week. It is a much more convenient system for the end user and it's much cheaper. I call Honduras from my home phone and it's probably 60 cents a minute. I call home from my Honduras phone and it's 15 cents a minute because the telcos have to compete on rate or you'll drop 'em like a stone if they're too expensive.
