DHS Agents to Replace Arpaio’s Officers in Maricopa County Jails

    Published Dec 20, 2011 | Immigration911.org

    Phoenix, AZ
    – As a result of the Department of Justice (DOJ) investigation that claimed Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio violated the civil and constitutional rights of Latinos, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has revoked Arpaio’s access to DHS systems and will replace 91 of Arpaio’s officers with 50 DHS agents to screen criminal illegal aliens and remove them from Arapio’s custody.

Arpaio has blasted the DOJ report and the resulting move saying, “They’re going to have people answering telephones and deciding what levels they’re going to deport. This is just to pacify the public that they aren’t going to be released. And they are going to be released.”

The DHS responded to Arpaio’s claims saying, “As was done previously, all individuals booked into the Maricopa County jail will be screened… [and] removed from the United States in line with our priorities.”

But those “priorities” are exactly what Sheriff Arpaio and the majority of the country who want tough enforcement are worried about. The Obama administration has drawn much criticism for being soft on illegal immigration with Arpaio being one of the loudest voices.

Sheriff Arpaio has become famous for cracking down on illegal immigrants and is widely considered the toughest immigration enforcement officer in the US. His detention camps have gained national attention with illegals being forced to wear pink-stripped jumpsuits and live in tents with desert tempuratues well above 100°.

As one of the major faces of the anti-illegal immigration movement and sharpest critics of the Obama administration, Arpaio has long known there has been a target on his back. And while it seems the administration has finally hit this target squarely, it could be Sheriff Joe who gets the last laugh.

The US Supreme Court is set to hand out a decision next summer on AZ’s controversial immigration law that could not only change the landscape of the immigration debate, but administer a devastating blow to the reelection chances of Obama in 2012.

The federal government is at this point no different than Rome was during it's decline. It will issue shock troops to garrison in areas that need to be suppressed.

Figures that Nasty Napo, et al. would find a way to shut down/limit what Sheriff Joe is doing.

Here's a long article, with a couple of big PDFs: http://www.azcentral.com/news/articl...by-arpaio.html

    Yep.

From today until this nation collapses, we'll see more and more of this.

The Feds don't like what a particular city or state is doing?

They'll just send in their goons, and take over.

This definitely looks like the Fed is overstepping big time. In fact, I question whether they are even legally allowed to step in and replace personnel in the county jails. I suppose if the jails accept federal money they could but, if they quit accepting cash that might be a different story.

Will be interesting to see how this shakes out since courts have ruled that sheriffs are the supreme law enforcement, even over federal law enforcement, due to their being elected by the local people.

Read this a couple times. Given the last paragraph here, it sounds like the DHS is trying to move in and Federalize things before the court can actually act on the subject.

That will give them some kind of "grandfather clause" perhaps? Anyone have any other ideas?

Either that or they've been watching too many TV movies where the Feds come in and take over a town and arrest the Sheriff or some crap.

Whoa. I just saw a LOT of deputies filing through and throwing their IDs down on the desk.

Arpaio was heard saying "They've kicked us out, for 'public safety'" he said.

This is utter bullshit. The Governor better step in RIGHT FUCKING NOW.

This is what Rick was referring to. The officers turned in Federal credentials that were used to verify legal status. They are still Sheriffs.

Arizona Sheriff's Officers Turn in Federal Credentials

    Published December 21, 2011
    | FoxNews.com

    • AP
December 21, 2011: Maricopa County Sheriff's Office immigration jail officers who lost their federal power to check whether inmates are in the county illegally, turn in their credentials after federal officials pulled the Sheriff's office immigration enforcement powers in Phoenix.

PHOENIX – Dozens of Sheriff Joe Arpaio's jail officers lined up at a news conference in Phoenix Wednesday to ceremoniously hand in their federal credentials a week after they were stripped of the ability to verify the immigration status of inmates.

Arpaio spoke at the same news conference, saying he's going to hold the federal government to its promise to send 50 federal agents to do such screening in his jail. But he predicted there will be illegal immigrants in jail who won't be deported and will be put back on streets.

"I want to see how many agents are going to be coming to our jail," the sheriff said. "I want to see how long it will take for 50 agents from across the country to work in our jails."

The Department of Homeland Security announced Dec. 15 that more than 90 of Arpaio's Maricopa County jail officers could no longer check whether inmates were in the county illegally.

The decision followed the release of a scathing Department of Justice report that said Arpaio's office has a pattern of racially profiling Latinos, basing immigration enforcement on racially charged citizen complaints and punishing Hispanic jail inmates for speaking Spanish.

The sheriff has denied the allegations. Homeland Security officials had no immediate comment on Arpaio's comments on Wednesday.

On Monday, the agency said in a letter to U.S. Sen. Jon Kyl that it would send immigration agents to screen jail inmates in Arizona's most populous county. Arpaio's aides say only one Immigration and Customs Enforcement officer has worked at the county jails since last week.

Homeland Security's decision wasn't the first time Arpaio's federal immigration powers were cut.

In October 2009, Immigration and Customs Enforcement stripped Arpaio of his power to let 100 deputies make federal immigration arrests, but still allowed his jail officers to determine the immigration status of people in jail.
