Naked man who tried to rip the flesh off another man in Miami identified

MIAMI — The naked man who viciously attacked another man — at one point trying to eat off the other man’s face — before he was shot dead by police was identified Monday.
Police sources said Monday the attacker was 31-year-old Rudy Eugene.

The name of the man Eugene seriously hurt remained a mystery. On Monday, the man was still at Jackson Memorial Hospital, in critical condition.
“We’re hoping that he pulls through, for his well-being, but also so he can tell us what happened,” said Sgt. Javier Ortiz, vice president of the Miami police union. “Only he knows.”
The grisly scene unfolded about 2 p.m. on the MacArthur Causeway, near the off-ramp to Biscayne Boulevard. A Road Ranger spotted the men and shouted on his loudspeaker for the attacker to back away. Meanwhile, a woman also saw what was happening flagged down an officer.
One witness, Larry Vega, told WSVN-TV he was riding his bicycle on the MacArthur when he saw a man tearing off pieces of the victim’s flesh with his mouth.
Vega said he found a police officer, who approached and told the attacker to get off the man. But the attacker kept chewing, Vega said, even after the officer shot once at him.
The officer fired again, hitting him several more times, eventually killing him.
The name of the officer who fired the fatal shots also was not released.
Security video from the adjacent Miami Herald building captured snippets of the violence as the two men — one dead, the other gravely injured — lay on the sidewalk as scores of officers arrived.
On Monday, police said they still needed witnesses to come forward about what they saw.
“We know that there were many people on the MacArthur Causeway,” police spokesman Detective William Moreno said, “and we’re hoping they come forward.”

MIAMI -- Authorities in Miami are looking for more witnesses after a police officer fatally shot a naked man who refused to stop chewing on the face of another naked man on a busy downtown highway ramp.


Detective William Moreno said police are looking for people to fill in the blanks on what led to the grisly scene in which a witness reported that a man — later identified by authorities as Rudy Eugene, 31 — savagely chewed on the other man's face and growled when a police officer told him to stop.


Miami police have released few details about the weekend attack, other than confirming that there was a fatal officer-involved shooting. One officer told Miami television station WSVN the attacker had likely taken a new potent form of LSD. An emergency room doctor theorized bath salts, a drug with amphetamine-like chemicals nicknamed after the product it resembles, may have induced the violent behavior, reported



The victim, who has not been identified, has been hospitalized in critical condition. Miami's local10.com reported he was a homeless man who frequents the neighborhood where he was attacked.

Witness Larry Vega was riding his bicycle Saturday afternoon off the MacArthur Causeway that connects downtown Miami with Miami Beach when he saw the savage attack.


"The guy was, like, tearing him to pieces with his mouth, so I told him, 'Get off!'" Vega told Miami television station WSVN. "The guy just kept eating the other guy away, like, ripping his skin."


Vega flagged down a Miami police officer, who he said repeatedly ordered the attacker to get off the victim. The attacker just picked his head up and growled at the officer, Vega said.


As the attack continued, Vega said the officer shot the attacker, who continued chewing the victim's face. The officer fired again, killing the attacker.


Emergency personnel rushed the victim to Jackson Memorial Hospital with 75 percent of his face missing, reported WSVN. An eye, his ears, and his lips were gone, the station said.


"It was just a blob of blood," Vega said. "You couldn't really see, it was just blood all over the place."


A surveillance video camera from The Miami Herald building nearby captured images of the men's naked legs lying side by side after the shooting.


“We’re hoping that he pulls through, for his well-being, but also so he can tell us what happened,” Sgt. Javier Ortiz, vice president of the Miami police union, told The Miami Herald. “Only he knows.”


Drug-induced excited delirium?

Armando Aguilar of the Miami Fraternal Order of Police told WSVN he believed the attacker was likely overdosing on LSD.


"What's happening is whenever we see that a person has taken all of his clothes off and has become violent, it's indicative of this excited delirium that's caused by overdose of drugs," he said. "What's happening is, inside their body their organs are burning up alive."


Excited delirium, a condition that's usually drug-related, can incite violence, unexpected strength, and sometimes hypothermia.


Paul Adams, an ER doctor at Jackson Memorial Hospital, told NBCMiami.com the designer drug nicknamed "bath salts" could have led to the attack.


“Cocaine and new LSDs, they cause delirium, which (means) you don't make sense when you take them," Adams said. "And when you don't make sense and you don't control your emotions, you don’t control your actions, you find yourself in circumstances that you just don't want to be in.”









Bath salts were banned in Florida in 2011, said NBCMiami.com. But new formulations have become popular, Adams said.


“We've had several deaths. Earlier last year we probably saw our first deaths from bath salts, where people (were) running onto MacArthur Causeway, under MacArthur Causeway, being chased by the police and then all of the sudden just collapsing," Adams said.


Eugene, the suspect, has just one arrest suggesting violent tendencies: Miami Beach police arrested him on a battery charge when he was 16, which was later dropped, reported The Miami Herald.


He has been arrested seven other times over five years, mostly for marijuana-related charges, the paper said. He was briefly married to a woman he met in high school at North Miami Beach Senior High, court records revealed, according to local10.com. The two divorced in 2007 after he reportedly became violent toward her.


"That's why I left," his ex-wife told local10.com, speaking on condition of anonymity.


Other homeless people who camp near the scene of the attack told local10.com they knew the suspect.


Police asked for the public's assistance in piecing together the attack.
"We know that there were many people on the MacArthur Causeway and we're hoping they come forward," Moreno told The Miami Herald on Monday.

Reports: Miami zombie attacker may have been using 'bath salts'

A naked man who chewed off the face of another man in what is being called a zombie-like attack may have been under the influence of "bath salts," a drug referred to as the new LSD, according to reports from CNN affiliates in Miami.


The horrific attack occurred Saturday and was only stopped after a police officer shot the attacker several times, killing him.


Larry Vega witnessed the attack on Miami's MacArthur Causeway. He told CNN affiliate WSVN he saw one naked man chewing off the face of another naked man.
"The guy was like tearing him to pieces with his mouth, so I told him, 'Get off!'" Vega told WSVN. "You know it's like the guy just kept eating the other guy away, like ripping his skin."


"It was just a blob of blood," WSVN quoted Vega as saying. "You couldn't really see, it was just blood all over the place."


Vega said he flagged down a passing police officer.


"When the officer approached him, told him to stop, pointed a gun at him, he turned around and growled like a wild animal and kept eating at the man's face," Fraternal Order of Police President Armando Aguilar told CNN affiliate WPLG.


Augilar said he suspects the attacker, identified as 31-year-old Rudy Eugene, was under the influence of "bath salts." Four other drug use instances in Miami-Dade bear resemblances to Saturday's attack, he told WPLG.


"It causes them to go completely insane and become very violent" and take off their clothes, Augilar told WPLG.


Dr. Paul Adams, an emergency room physician at Jackson Memorial Hospital in Miami, told CNN affiliate WBFS that the drug makes users delirious. They exhibit elevated temperatures and extreme physical strength, Adams said.


“I took care of a 150 pound individual who you would have thought he was 250 pounds,” WBFS quoted Adams as saying. “It took six security officers to restrain the individual.”


Adams said users have been known to use their jaws as weapons, according to WBFS.


According to a 2011 report from the National Institute of Drug Abuse, bath salts contain amphetamine-like chemicals.


"Doctors and clinicians at U.S. poison centers have indicated that ingesting or snorting 'bath salts' containing synthetic stimulants can cause chest pains, increased blood pressure, increased heart rate, agitation, hallucinations, extreme paranoia, and delusions," according to the NIDA report.


In October, the Drug Enforcement Administration made possession of the stimulants in bath salts, Mephedrone, 3,4 methylenedioxypyrovalerone (MDPV) and Methylone, illegal under an emergency order. The order lasts for a year with a possible six-month extension.


The stimulants have been placed under restrictions or banned in 37 states, according to a DEA press release.


The victim of Saturday's attack, whom police have not identified, was in critical condition at Jackson Memorial on Monday, according to the WPLG report. Augilar told WPLG that 75% to 80% of his face was missing.


Eugene had an arrest record, mostly misdemeanors, including a battery charge from when he was 16 that was later dropped, according to the Miami Herald.


He had been married but divorced in 2007, WPLG reported. His former wife told the station that Eugene had been violent toward her.


Homeless people near where the attack took place said Eugene was often seen around the area looking confused, according to WPLG.

I just wanted to put up a link to a nice story on Panspermia - the idea that life began elsewhere in the Universe and was somehow transported to Earth. The story comes from a Wired article I stumbled across and gives a new twist to an old idea.



In its modern form panspermia imagines microbes catching rides in rocks blown across the galaxy via asteroid impacts on life-bearing worlds. But it may be that the microbes can't survive the interstellar journey. The new twist proposed a couple of years ago is that even if the microbes are dead when the rocks crash to earth, the information in their DNA might play a role in triggering or helping life here.


The scientific article the piece is based on is clearly VERY speculative. I don't know its fate but it is a cool idea to get you started on this shortened work week.

How the zombie apocalypse starts: Naked attacker found eating man’s face

A scary bit of news is coming out of Miami this weekend after the city police shot a naked man found eating another man's face. And several circumstances of the story have some people crying zombie.


The police were called in yesterday after the attacker was spotted on the MacArthur Causeway off ramp. When the attacker failed to back away at the officer's request, the officer shot the attacker.


Now it's one thing to eat another person, and it's quite another to eat another person and then continue eating after you've been shot. Witnesses claim the officer fired half a dozen shots before the attacker finally stopped. The attacker was killed, and the victim is currently in the hospital.


This is obviously a great tragedy, one that's left one man dead and another disfigured, and the police are theorizing cocaine psychosis rather than zombification as the cause of the attack. But residents of Miami can rest easy in the knowledge that the police are prepared to nip any zombie outbreaks in the bud.

Crime Naked Man Who Tried to Eat Homeless Man’s Face Identified — and are ‘Bath Salts’ to Blame?

The naked man who was reportedly growling like an animal as he tried to eat the face of a homeless this weekend has been identified. And now, as more details emerge, the story becomes even more horrifying.
Though cannibalistic instincts most likely aren’t reflected in physical features, the man looks normal — rather than appearing as a crazed lunatic, the man actually looks like somebody you could bump into at the mall.

Pictured in an old police mugshot, Rudy Eugene had reportedly been arrested 8 times since the age of 16, before he was shot and killed this weekend, and four of the arrests involved marijuana.

He even had an ex-wife, who said: “I wouldn’t say he had [a] mental problem but he always felt like people was against him type of attitude.” She said the marriage ended when Eugene became increasingly violent.

“No one was for him, everyone was against him.”

A neighbor said that Eugene’s former home was foreclosed on in 2011, and homeless people living near where the attack took place said he would often wander around the area, looking confused.

And as more details emerge about the attacker, more emerge of the attack.

The cyclist who first spotted the grisly scene recalled: “The guy was, like, tearing him to pieces with his mouth, so I told him, ‘Get off!’…The guy just kept eating the other guy away, like, ripping his skin.”

“When the officer approached him, told him to stop, pointed a gun at him, he turned around and growled like a wild animal and kept eating at the man’s face,” Fraternal Order of Police President Armando Aguilar told WPLG-TV.

Aguilar explained that Eugene was likely under the influence of what’s being called the new LSD — “bath salts.”

“It causes them to go completely insane and become very violent,” and many take off their clothes because it makes them feel hot, Augilar explained.

Here is an explanation of the “bath salts,” from a case where a woman reportedly swung a machete at her mother while under the influence of the drug:



“We have seen, already, three or four cases that are exactly like this where some people have admitted taking LSD and it’s no different than cocaine psychosis,” Aguilar told CBS.

“I took care of a 150 pound individual who you would have thought he was 250 pounds,” a doctor commented. “It took six security officers to restrain the individual.”

In Eugene’s case, even a bullet wouldn’t stop him.

Police shot him once after yelling for him to stop, but Eugene apparently continued trying to eat the other man’s face. Police shot him multiple times after that, before he collapsed and died.

“Seventy-five to 80 percent of [the homeless man's] face was missing,” Armando Aguilar of the Miami Fraternal Order of Police Aguilar told NBC Miami. “He was actually swallowing pieces of the man’s face.”

Back in March, a naked reveler who may have taken a similar drug attacked a good samaritan and first responders after being hit by a taxi during the Ultra Music Festival. Fourteen police officers had to be treated for blood exposure and injuries after managing to subdue the man.

“It’s dangerous for the police,” Dr. Paul Adams told CBSMiami. “It’s dangerous for the fire fighters. It’s dangers for the hospital workers taking care of them because they come in, they have to be restrained both chemically and physically and you’re asking for someone to get hurt.”

And now police are warning drug dealers that the liability could fall back on them, in such cases.

“I have a message for whoever is selling it out there,” said Aguilar.

“You can be arrested for murder if you are selling [this] to people, unsuspecting people on the street and somebody ends up dying as a result you will be charged with murder.”

“The guy, he was like a zombie, blood dripping, it was intense,” Vega, the witness, explained. “The closest thing I’ve seen to it? ‘The Walking Dead.’”

HACKENSACK — A city man is in critical condition after allegedly cutting himself with a knife and throwing parts of his intestines at police, according to a report from NorthJersey.com.



Police received a call late Sunday that Wayne Carter, 43, had barricaded himself inside his home on Clay St. and was threatening to hurt himself. Police had to break down the door and found Carter screaming and repeatedly stabbing himself as they approached.



He allegedly threw pieces of intestine and skin at some of the officers.
Hackensack Police told The Record that Carter had previously been taken to a hospital for psychiatric treatment. He remains in critical condition after undergoing emergency surgery.

In it he claims to have uncovered proof that agents within the Federal Emergency Management Association, and Department of Homeland Security have drastically underreported the number of “Necro-Mortosis” outbreaks in the United States. Hamel representing the 10th Congressional District outside Miami, Florida, leveled a number of accusations and indictment at the present administrations handling of the undead plague within the US borders. Officially, the Center for Disease Control lists only one confirmed undead outbreak in the United States, 'the New Jersey Zombie Incident.' The bottom line is some federal employees just don’t care and there is nothing we can do about it. Maybe if the zombies where closer to where they personally lived, they would have put them into the proper category.” Former FBI agent Marty Waters, President of Allied Advanced Security (AAS) has additional concerns, “It is bad enough they aren’t classifying the information properly. But the level of investigations into these matters is shoddy at best. Ronald Poppo has been identified as the unfortunate victim left without much of a face after being brutally attacked and cannibalized in Miami on Saturday by Rudy Eugene, the man who has been dubbed the "Miami zombie" in the wake of the shocking incident.

The victim, who was also homeless, was identified as Ronald Poppo, 65, by police on Tuesday, the Miami Herald reported.

And though nothing can hold a candle to the shocking incidents of Saturday -- which left Ronald Poppo with severe facial damage after Eugene, 31, chewed on his face for an extended period of time during the 18-minute attack before being shot to death by police -- Poppo did not have an easy life even before that fated day.

The Miami Herald reports that Poppo -- full name Ronald E. Poppo -- was a "drinker who had been shot once and arrested two dozen times," and that as of Tuesday he was "fighting for his life at Jackson Memorial Hospital's Ryder Trauma Center."
The [UK] Daily Mail reported that more than 75 percent of Robert Poppo's face had been chewed off, and that he had suffered "some of the worst injuries staff had ever encountered."


Ronald Poppo never had it easy, living for four decades on the streets of towns including Miami, New Orleans and New York and being arrested at least 24 times since 1978 for crimes including public drinking, trespassing, burglary, assault and resisting arrest, the Herald reported. And, though authorities are not yet sure why the two crossed paths on Miami's MacArthur Causeway on Saturday, he could often be seen loitering under the bridge there.


Born May 17, 1947, Poppo had checked into Jackson Memorial Hospital before. In 1976 he was treated there after being shot, and was homeless and gave his address at the time as a local Salvation Army, according to the Miami New Times.


Two acquaintances of his -- Emory Robert Spencer and a man named Rafael -- both offered the same quote about Ronald Poppo to the Miami Herald: "He never bothered nobody." They say that pretty much summed up his life, hard and complicated s it may have been.


Rudy Eugene, on the other hand, led a more stable life, graduating in 2000 from North Miami Beach High School, where he played football, and had recently expressed a desire to start a car-washing business, the paper said. But that side of Eugene's life is lost to history, as he will "be forever remembered as the Miami Zombie," according to the Herald.


But that memory lives on in the mind of Eugene's high school friend Victoria Forte:
"Rudy was not a face-eating zombie monster," she told the Herald. "The Rudy we know was a nice gentleman with a warm smile, and funny."


And another friend of Eugene's, Erica Smith, told the Herald that she was surprised to learn of his involvement in the attack:


"He wasn't homeless. He had a place to stay. He had a car, and he worked," Smith said. "He had his ups and downs, but he was not an aggressive person. He was really sweet and giving."


That now seems to be an odd way to describe the Miami Zombie, as when Miami Police officer Jose Rivera responded to the scene at 2:13 p.m. Saturday -- shortly after being flagged down in his police car by passing biker Larry Vega, who witnessed the crime as it was underway -- Eugene was in what authorities have said appeared to be in a drugged craze, the Herald reported.


Rivera repeatedly ordered Eugene, a Haitian immigrant who grew up in North Miami Beach, to halt the attack and leave the man alone, and Vega told Miami's WSVN TV that at that point "the guy just stood his head up like that, with a piece of flesh in his mouth, and growled."


Eugene did not cease the attack, and police officers shot him dead, leaving his body next to the mangled body of the victim, who has not been identified and is reportedly still in critical condition at an area hospital.


Police are still investigating the crime, but some reports state that Eugene may have been under the influence of LSD or "bath salts" when he attacked his victim:
"Whenever we see that a person has taken all of his clothes off and has become violent, it's indicative of this excited delirium that's caused by an overdose of drugs," Armando Aguilar of the Miami Fraternal Order of Police told WSVN 7 News. "What's happening is inside their body their organs are burning up alive"


However Smith did add during her conversation with the Herald that there may have been darker demons at play in Eugene's mind:


"He did smoke, I'm not going to lie about that," Smith said. "Someone must have given him something really bad. A few days ago he told my brother that he was really depressed and didn't want to live anymore. He was a guy who just wanted a family and someone to love him."


Authorities are awaiting the results of toxicology reports on Eugene's dead body.

The horrifying Miami cannibal attack has shocked the nation; homeless man Rudy Eugene was shot dead by police in a barrage of gunshots after he was found eating the face off 65-year-old victim, Ronald Poppo. The news has received huge coverage across the nation's media, and some have even come out to suggest it is just a sign of a "zombie apocalypse" taking over the nation.


Poppo was viciously attacked by 31-year-old Rudy Eugene on Saturday in a brutal assault that saw the top half of the victim's face gnawed and bitten off piece by piece by Eugene.

Poppo has amazingly survived the terrible ordeal but is in critical condition, and reportedly only has his mustache and goatee intact on his face.


However, other incidents in Florida in recent weeks have led conspiracy theorists to suggest a "zombie apocalypse" is upon us. A zombie apocalypse is when humans begin to turn into zombies and begin searching for live humans to feed on their brains. The concept has been featured in various movies for decades, and more recently in films such as "28 Days Later" and "Sean of the Dead".


Blog site IHopeRickSantorum has compiled a list of 10 zombie-type happenings in Florida and other states between May 16 and Saturday's attack:


- On May 16, students and teachers at a Florida high school had to be decontaminated after breaking out in a mysterious rash, according to the Huffington Post.


- On May 21, a Bellwood, Illinois, man was arrested after allegedly biting an 18-year-old woman's cheek, according to MySuburbanLife.com.

- On May 23, a Spring Valley, Calif., man was arrested for allegedly biting the tip off of his cousin's nose off, according to NBC San Diego.

- On May 26, the same day as the infamous Miami cannibal attack, a Florida anesthesiologist allegedly banged his head against the inside of a cop car until he started bleeding following a DUI arrest. He then proceeded to allegedly spit blood in a police officer's face, according to ABC News.


However, for those who have seen the state of Ronald Poppo's face following the terrifying attack over Memorial Day weekend, that most recent incident is by far the most horrifying and gory.


The cannibal attack saw a naked Eugene, who has been reported as homeless, attacking another half-naked homeless man, Poppo. The attack is being blamed on bath salts.


Detectives believe Eugene had been high on bath salts, which is a general aromatherapy product used in baths. But when the bath salts are inhaled or injected, the abuser can become high on the substance, driving them to a high similar to "cocaine psychosis".


The attack happened off a highway in Miami at 2 p.m. where the naked human zombie was eventually shot by police 12 times. Police had repeatedly ordered Eugene to stop eating the victim, but after simply growling at the officers and continuing the gory feast, police were forced to forcefully bring the attack to an end.


Eugene was killed by the multiple gunshot wounds.


Witness Larry Vega told WSVN: "The guy was, like, tearing him to pieces with his mouth, so I told him, 'Get off!' The guy just kept eating the other guy away, like, ripping his skin."


Vega then went to call police to assist at the scene.


Graphic images have appeared on the internet showing the state of Poppo's face. His nose has been completely torn away, and all the skin from the top half of his head is gone, leaving a horrifying and disturbing image of the brutal attack. The photos were too graphic to post up on our site.
