Trump Advisors: We Tried to Prepare Him For Debate, But He Got Bored

    September 28, 2016

The New York Times reported Wednesday that multiple Donald Trump advisors say that they tried to prepare the Republican presidential candidate for the first debate Monday night, but Trump lost interest and just started chatting about other topics.

“Mr. Trump’s debate preparation was unconventional,” The Times reported. “Aides have introduced a podium and encouraged him to participate in mock debates, but he has not embraced them, focusing mostly on conversations and discussions with advisers.”

“There were early efforts to run a more standard form of general election debate-prep camp, led by Roger Ailes, the ousted Fox News chief, at Mr. Trump’s golf course in Bedminster, N.J,” they report. “But Mr. Trump found it hard to focus during those meetings, according to multiple people briefed on the process who requested anonymity to discuss internal deliberations.”

When Trump showed obvious disinterest, Ailes responded not by pushing Trump, but “by discussing his own problems, as well as recounting political war stories, according to two people present for the sessions.”

In the end, advisors believe the lack of preparation hurt Trump. They tell The Times that they gave Trump ready-made responses to many of the attacks made by Hillary Clinton and instructed him on how exploit her weaknesses, but Trump failed to use any of his debate prep.

California governor signs bill allowing felons to vote from their jail cells

GEOFF EARLE, DEPUTY U.S. POLITICAL EDITOR FOR DAILYMAIL.COM IN BEDORD, NEW HAMPSHIRE
    PUBLISHED: 13:27 EST, 29 September 2016

    • California Governor Jerry Brown signed legislation Wednesday to allow felons awaiting release to vote from county jails in the state
    • Measure intended to ease their transition back to society
    • Opponents said felons could decide a close election, while backers say mass disenfranchisement must end

Convicted felons serving jail sentences in California county jails will now get to participate in an activity besides three meals a day and recreation time: votingin elections.

Governor Jerry Brown signed new legislation into effect as part of a reform backers say will help prisoners transition back into society while still serving time for their crimes.

The bill he signed would let thousands of felons doing time in county jails to vote in California elections, the LA Times reported.

The new law also reinstates eligibility to vote for those ex-prisoners on probation or being kept under community supervision starting next year.

The new law takes effect January 1, so will have no impact on this November's elections.

One state lawmaker, Sen. Patricia Bates, slammed the legislation. “It is very disappointing that felons still serving their sentences behind bars will now be able to vote since Governor Brown failed to veto this really bad bill,” she said in a statement.

But Daniel Zingale, senior vice president of The California Endowment health foundation, told the paper, 'Mass disenfranchisement for minor offenses is a tragic legacy of the Jim Crow era that disproportionately affects and diminishes the power of communities of color.'

California's action fits within a broader national push to expand voting rights for ex-felons, with laws getting determined state by state.

Virginia governor Terry McAuliffe has been battling with his state's legislature in the courts over his own effort to restore voting rights. In his latest action, he individually restored voting rights to 13,000 felons.

McAuliffe cited the power of 'second chances.' Republicans in the state have sought to block him. His earlier effort to restore voting to 200,000 felons could have had a significant effect on the elections in a state that is a presidential battleground this year.

California is already expected to be heavily in Hillary Clinton's column.

In Congress, Democrats have introduced legislation to restore voting rights in federal elections to criminals upon release from jail, while Kentucky Senator Rand Paul introduced legislation to restore voting rights to non-violent offenders.

'It would be transformative if everybody voted, President Obama told a Cleveland crowd last year.

New Poll Shows Clinton Leading Trump in Arizona for First Time

    October 6, 2016

Bad news for the Trump crowd.

A new poll released Thursday shows that for the first time, Hillary Clinton has taken the lead over Donald Trump in the presidential race in Arizona.

The poll from Emerson College shows that Clinton has overtaken Trump in our state by a margin of 44 percent to 42 percent.

Libertarian Presidential candidate Gary Johnson received 9 percent in the poll, while Green Party candidate received just 1 percent.

Among Hispanic voters, Clinton has a solid lead over Trump, 54 percent to 40 percent in Arizona.

The poll also shows that In what was expected to be a tough race, Arizona Senator John McCain is up 16 points over his Democratic challenger, Ann Kirkpatrick, 52 percent to 36 percent.

True, it's only a couple of points but bear in mind that my native state has only voted for the Democrat once in the last 64 years. Once. This is a state with so much Republican mojo that even an idiot like McCain can keep getting re-elected easily. Jan Brewer was re-elected there.

While I am not one who believes in poll panic (especially in this election), this one should at least give pause to some in the Trump campaign. If Arizona truly is slipping in the wrong direction, they've got serious problems.

This could also be a one-off because of Trump's rambling performance in the first debate. This race has plenty of potential for unexpected shifts thanks to unfavorable ratings of the two major candidates. However, even though Hillary is an awful candidate, she can probably weather hiccups better than Trump as the election looms closer.

    Wargaming the Electoral College

    October 6, 2016

Almost exactly eight years ago today, it was all but over for John McCain. Looking at the maps the first week of October 2008, I wrote that "as things stand now, Obama cruises to victory by winning any tossup state other than NV. McCain must win every tossup state other than NV."

Things aren't that bad for Trump-Pence, but most battleground states are trending blue -- and Trump needs to win a whole lot of battleground states.

Before we dig into those, there are two outlier polls. Both Rasmussen (43-41) and the Los Angeles Times (47-43) show Trump leading, albeit nationally rather than in battleground states. And even those figures come with caveats. The L.A. Times tracks eligible voters -- not likely voters, not registered voters, but eligible voters. It would seem that all you need to do to be a respondent for their daily tracking is be at least 18 and have a pulse -- and they probably aren't checking too closely for either. As for Rasmussen, of the major polling outfits last time around, their numbers almost always trended higher than anyone else's for Mitt Romney. Since then, Rasmussen has tracked President Obama's approval rating higher than almost anyone else, so maybe they've fixed their methodology. Or maybe they overcorrected it. Who knows?

So I'm giving Rasmussen a skeptical eye and treating the L.A. Times numbers with total disdain.

Just a couple of weeks ago -- before the first presidential debate -- everything seemed to be breaking Trump's way, when it looked like "Clinton's collapse [in the polls; not on the sidewalk] is as almost as deep as it is broad." She had faded in the Rust Belt stretch from PA to IA (excluding MN), and had also lost ground in a checkerboard full of states along the Atlantic coast and the Mountain West. The total number of Electoral College votes she could count on had dropped to just a hair over 200, down from 247 in August.

Trump, on the other hand, hadn't secured any new red states, however he had chipped away at enough of Clinton's statewide leads to be able to see a couple of clears paths to 270.

But post-debate, the numbers are almost all going back the other way.

Let's look at what I've been calling "Trump's northern route to victory" through those Rust Belt states.

Pennsylvania is of course the biggie, with a treasure trove of 20 EC votes. Clinton is up by an RCP average of 6. The high result (Clinton +10) comes from Monmouth, with Franklin & Marshall just one behind. The real outlier is CNN at Clinton +1, but that poll was conducted before the first debate.

Trump leads by an average of just 2.4 (within the margin of error) in Ohio, but questions remain about Trump's GOTV effort. Bloomberg reports that "Trump’s team is playing catch-up" against Clinton's well-oiled machine, and Team Trump's lack of political infrastructure means they have to rely for GOTV on a state party led by former (?) rival Gov. John Kasich. There's no love lost between those two, and Kasich not only reportedly turned down the Veep spot, but he also hasn't endorsed Trump.

Michigan looks like the Big Blue Blowout it was probably always going to be, and Wisconsin doesn't look much better. While polling in Iowa is slim, Trump appears to lead there comfortably -- but without OH and probably PA, little IA's six votes don't mean squat.

That's the Northern Route, which looks less like a route and more like broken ground, infested by rattlesnakes.

    So let's move south.

Florida is ...still Florida, as delightfully crazy and unpredictable as ever. Both candidates have somehow lost ground in the last two weeks. If Trump manages to overcome Clinton's slight edge, it might be from riding Marco Rubio's coattails. That result wouldn't just drip with irony -- it would drip with irony dripping with Hollandaise, covered in sprinkles, and with a birthday candle on top.

Georgia and South Carolina -- which we shouldn't have to talk about, and yet here we are -- have Trump up, if not quite comfortably. North Carolina shows Clinton back with a tiny lead on average. If Virginia was a Neil Diamond song, it would be "Song Sung Blue." Clinton might be tracking only in the mid-40s, but Trump hasn't once hit as high as 39 points in any Virginia poll I can find.

On now to the Mountain West.

New Mexico never looked to be in play, and still doesn't. Arizona, remarkably enough, is still in play at this late date. In the four-way race, Trump leads by an average 42.0 - 40.7, and AZ's libertarian heritage likely won't do him much good on Election Day. If I had to call AZ right now, I'd give it to Trump -- but the point is that AZ shouldn't be anything close to an issue. Nevada is anyone's guess, and Colorado's poll numbers are all over the place, from Clinton +11 to Trump +4. I can't tell if it's the voters or the pollsters who are Rocky Mountain high -- maybe it's both. The trend lines are going Clinton's way, however, especially in polls taken post-debate. Evan McMullin's independent run doesn't seem to be doing Trump any real damage in Red Utah, despite a recent "surge."

I didn't actually forget New Hampshire, but some pollsters might have. I've only found two samples of likely voters which are less than two weeks old, and they show Clinton leading but just barely outside the margin of error. That other bellwether, Missouri, is Trump Country.

So if the election were held today (caveat: the election will not be held today) the result would probably look more like 2000 than 2008 -- a close race coming down to less than a handful of states.

You'll notice that on today's map, Trump would need to flip Mighty Pennsylvania and at least one other state to win. Or take Michigan and another state the size of Wisconsin or better. Or snag both of those mid-atlantic neighbors, North Carolina and Virginia.

If Trump were to lose Florida, yet sweep through NC, NH, OH, PA, and VA -- then he would still fall short of 270. In addition to that unlikely East Coast run, he'd need to pick off one out of CO, NV, MI, and WI.

Trump's situation isn't as dire as McCain's in the first week of October eight years ago, but his time is running out and his options are narrowing.

Trump’s Really Bad, Terrible, No Good Polling Week

    October 6, 2016

Last week, I explained that Donald Trump's momentum had carried up to the debate. This week, as the polling landscape reflected the post-debate electoral sentiment, Trump saw his support wane in a majority of the swing states I am tracking. If the election were held today — and with early voting in many places the election is being held today — Trump would lose in an Electoral College rout.

Trump saw a decline in support in eight of the 14 swing states I am tracking, and his support stayed the same in three others. In the remaining three states, he saw a slight bump. Nationally, Hillary Clinton gained almost a full percentage point in the national two-way RealClearPolitics polling average over the week. In addition, the FiveThirtyEight Polls-plus prediction has gone from a toss-up two weeks ago to a 73.9 percent chance of Clinton winning.

    State-by-state polling

There has been very little post-debate state-by-state polling. However, in the 14 swing states — as defined by RealClearPolitics — here is how the polling has changed. (Note: All numbers are from this past Wednesday afternoon, and the number in parentheses is the change over the previous week.)

    • In three states, Trump increased his lead over Clinton as of Wednesday afternoon, as compared to the previous Wednesday. Those states are Georgia (Trump +0.3), Missouri (Trump +0.2), and Ohio (Trump +0.4).
    • In two states, Trump maintained the same lead over Clinton as of Wednesday afternoon, as compared to the previous Wednesday. Those states are Iowa and Arizona, where Trump has a five-point and 2.2-point lead, respectively.
    • In three states, Clinton gained the lead over Trump as of Wednesday afternoon, as compared to the previous Wednesday. Those states are North Carolina (Clinton +2.3), Colorado (Clinton +3.8), and Nevada (Clinton +3.1)
    • In five states, Clinton increased her lead over Trump as of Wednesday afternoon, as compared to the previous Wednesday. Those states are New Hampshire (Clinton +0.6), Virginia (Clinton +1), Michigan (Clinton +0.3), Pennsylvania (Clinton +2.6), and Florida (Clinton +2.3)
    • In Wisconsin, Clinton’s lead over Trump was unchanged as of Wednesday afternoon, as compared to the previous Wednesday afternoon.

Trump is in a precarious position. He has lost momentum with less than five weeks to go before Election Day. That is compounded by the fact that some states are already voting. If Trump does not convincingly beat Clinton in the debate on Sunday, October 9, the campaign may effectively be over.

    Arizona (11 Electoral Votes)

    Colorado (Nine Electoral Votes)

    Florida (29 Electoral Votes)

    Georgia (16 Electoral Votes)

    Iowa (Six Electoral Votes)

    Michigan (16 Electoral Votes)

    Missouri (10 Electoral Votes)

    Nevada (Six Electoral Votes)

    New Hampshire (Four Electoral Votes)

    North Carolina (15 Electoral Votes)

    Ohio (18 Electoral Votes)

    Pennsylvania (20 Electoral Votes)

    Virginia (13 Electoral Votes)

    Wisconsin (10 Electoral Votes)

Trump On Hot Mic: 'When You're a Star ... You Can Do Anything' to Women

    October 7, 2016

Editor's note: This story contains graphic language that some may find offensive.

A decade before Donald Trump became the Republican nominee for president, he shared candid and lewd views on women that were caught on tape.

"I'm automatically attracted to beautiful women — I just start kissing them, it's like a magnet. Just kiss. I don't even wait. And when you're a star, they let you do it. You can do anything," he said in the 2005 conversation. "Grab 'em by the pussy."

Ten years later, as a candidate and now the Republican nominee, Trump has come under fire for insulting and directing crude language toward women. He's rejected such criticism repeatedly, insisting "nobody has more respect for women than me."

In the 2005 recording obtained by NBC News from Access Hollywood, Trump, then newly married to Melania Trump, spots a young woman through a bus window while in conversation with Billy Bush, at the time an anchor for Access Hollywood, and others.

"Whoa, whoa," he said to Bush about the woman's appearance. "I gotta use some Tic Tacs just in case I start kissing her."

Earlier in the conversation, Trump recalls talking about trying to woo a married woman.

"I moved on her actually, she was down in Palm Beach and I failed. I'll admit it. I did try to fuck her, she was married ... and I moved on her very heavily," Trump is heard saying.

"I took her out furniture shopping. She wanted to get some furniture and I told her 'I'll show you where you can get some nice furniture,'" Trump is heard saying. "I moved on her like a bitch, and I could not get there, and she was married. And all the sudden I see her and she's got the big phony tits, she's totally changed her look."

In a prepared statement, Trump responded to the clip.

"This was locker room banter, a private conversation that took place many years ago. Bill Clinton has said far worse to me on the golf course — not even close. I apologize if anyone was offended."

RNC chairman Reince Preibus also responded to Trump's comments in a statement Friday night.

"No woman should ever be described in these terms or talked about in this manner," he said. "Ever."

Bush, now with the TODAY show, apologized in a statement Friday night, and said he was playing along in the 2005 conversation.

"Obviously I'm embarrassed and ashamed. It's no excuse, but this happened eleven years ago — I was younger, less mature, and acted foolishly in playing along. I'm very sorry," Bush said in the statement.

The new revelations come just 33 days left before the election, making Trump's uphill climb with women voters even more challenging.

Just 24 percent of women view Trump favorably, according to the latest NBC News/ Wall Street Journal poll from mid-September. In a two-way race, Trump polls two points higher with men, while Clinton leads Trump with women by 14 points.

Clinton has already made Trump's past words on women a key campaign issue, using audio clips in a recent advertisement of him saying "slob" and "pig" when speaking about women. The ad then asks "is this the president we want for our daughters?"

In the last debate, Clinton slammed Trump for allegedly calling former Miss Universe Alicia Machado "Miss Piggy" for gaining weight and "Miss Housekeeping" because she is Latino. Trump kept the matter alive for days, insisting Machado had indeed gained too much weight after winning the beauty pageant and tweeting that she was "disgusting" and alleging that she had a sex tape.

After the debate, an online NBC News/Survey Monkey poll found that 27 percent of likely women voters said the debate had made them think worse of Trump.

Trump has been repeatedly accused of misogyny, with critics citing his many interviews with shock jock Howard Stern, where the conversation often turned raunchy and crude, as well as his behavior on reality television show The Apprentice.

The Associated Press recently reported multiple allegations of inappropriate behavior towards women while he was on the show, based on interviews with more than 20 former cast a crew members of The Apprentice who said Trump was often lewd and derogatory about women on set.

    Yay October Surprise.

Remember how Romney's imaginary War On Women was spun? Yeah, not much spinning that has to be done now. Yet not surprising... This is the whole Trump package a lot of people warned was in store.

Simply amazing how this is decade old footage yet didn't come out when the media was fawning over him:

You'd almost swear it's like they knew who the weakest candidate was and helped pick him for the general and everyone fell for it.

Serious question, has this ever happened in a Presidential election before?

Congressman Jason Chaffetz UNENDORSES Donald Trump … And He’s Not Alone

    October 8, 2016

And the fallout over Donald Trump’s 2005 hot mic moment continues.

Congressman Jason Chaffetz has withdrawn his endorsement of Donald Trump.

Chaffetz, a Republican representing Utah's Third Congressional District, appeared on Fox 13 News at Nine Friday, saying: "I'm out. I can no longer in good conscience endorse this person for president. It is some of the most abhorrent and offensive comments that you can possibly imagine."

Rep. Chaffetz said he and his wife have a 15-year-old daughter, and he said if he can't look her in the eye and tell her about what Trump said he can't endorse the man.

While Chaffetz said he isn't sure who he will vote for, he said he won't be voting for Hillary Clinton and added that it's a shame Mike Pence isn't at the top of the ticket. He also said Trump's response to the criticism was an apology for getting caught, not an apology for his behavior.

Chaffetz had endorsed Senator Marco Rubio during the primaries, but once Rubio was eliminated from the running, he, like too many others, decided to tow the party line and endorse the nominee.

Back in August Chaffetz told Fox 13 News he didn't agree with everything Trump said or how he said it, but he said at that time he felt Trump was more trustworthy than Hillary Clinton and would be better for Utah.

Chaffetz joins a host of others who have condemned Trump’s words, in the aftermath of the vulgar video’s release.

Senator Mark Kirk, of Illinois, delivered what is, perhaps, the most bold statement in the matter.

None of this is different than who Trump was when he entered the race, or who he was throughout the primary season.

This isn’t a different Trump than the Trump that was celebrated at the GOP convention in July.

It’s the same, vile Donald Trump, and the GOP could have stopped this.

Senator Mike Lee Calls Trump a “Distraction,” Calls on Him to Step Down [VIDEO]

    October 8, 2016

More and more people are calling on Donald Trump to leave the race and don't look back. Add to that list conservative fighter Mike Lee of Utah, who has stood in opposition to Trump even as his friend Ted Cruz endorsed him. Lee posted a video to his Facebook Page in the early hours of the morning calling Donald Trump a "distraction" and called on him to step down. "It's time for us not to settle," he says. "It's time for us to expect more."

Paul Ryan Cancels Event With Trump After Vulgar Video Released

    October 7, 2016

People have been warning there's opposition research files on Donald Trump three feet thick. It's been around and the Clinton campaign is using it. The video that "surfaced" of Donald Trump saying some pretty lewd things about women.

And now Paul Ryan is checking out of an event they were supposed to appear at together:

House Speaker Paul Ryan Friday evening uninvited Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump from a Saturday appearance together following the release of a tape in which Trump was recorded making vulgar comments about women.

Ryan said he was 'sickened' by Trump's lewd comments before calling on the businessman to show respect for women.

    Here is Ryan's statement:

"I am sickened by what I heard today," Ryan said in a statement. "Women are to be championed and revered, not objectified. I hope Mr. Trump treats this situation with the seriousness it deserves and works to demonstrate to the country that he has greater respect for women than this clip suggests."

This is not going away for Trump any time soon. The entire weekend will be spent talking about this.

Donors Are Pulling Out and Demanding a New GOP Candidate Immediately

    October 8, 2016

The fallout from the Trump video is getting worse. Mark Halperin of Bloomberg is now reporting that major GOP donors are dumping their support of Donald Trump and seeking a new GOP candidate for the race. RNC officials are allegedly meeting to discuss the future of the candidacy (RNC lackey Sean Spicer denies this) and there are reports that a meeting has been taking place at Trump Tower as well.

It's not a pretty day for the GOP candidate, who is facing a backlash that no one seems to have predicted. You know. No one except us here at RedState (and a few others), anyway.

What comes next is an absolute mystery. This is uncharted water. As Sunday's debate grows closer, the Trump camp is in serious trouble and has nowhere to go but down. It also gets worse when you realize it's still early October and the Clinton camp almost assuredly has more material out there, waiting to drop.

Ted Cruz Publicly Responds to Trump’s Latest Remarks about Women

    October 7, 2016

The political world is aflutter with the talk of Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump's incriminating "hot mic" moment. With the clear division in the Republican party apparent as ever, Republican leaders have been forced to make a decision to either stand up and speak out against the disgusting behavior or justify it.

Ted Cruz made his decision Friday night. Here is what he said:

It is unclear if he will reverse his previous endorsement of Donald Trump, but Cruz clearly condemns the behavior with no excuses. Maybe he hasn't completely lost his morals after all.

Did you watch the video or just read the words because context matters.
"Far better it is to dare mighty things, to win glorious triumphs even though checkered by failure, than to rank with those poor spirits who neither enjoy nor suffer much because they live in the gray twilight that knows neither victory nor defeat."

I watched video and this wasn't like you and me, or you and your best friend, shooting the shit around a campfire.

This was Trump, in public, bragging to a reporter, with a recording device.

God only knows some of the salty stuff I've said with close pals but a) I have the decency and decorum to not go around broadcasting it in public and b) I'm not stupid enough to allow someone to record it. Anyone who has more than 2 brain cells knows that if there is a mic or camera nearby it is always hot. Oh, and the press is never your friend.

Mike Pence statement in full: 'As a husband and father, I was offended by the words and actions described by Donald Trump in the eleven-year-old video released yesterday. I do not condone his remarks and cannot defend them. I am grateful that he has expressed remorse and apologized to the American people. We pray for his family and look forward to the opportunity he has to show what is in his heart when he goes before the nation tomorrow night.'
