Russia Test-Fires Submarine Launched Intercontinental Missile
Russia successfully conducted a test launch on Monday of a new intercontinental ballistic missile, the navy said.

A statement said the missile was launched from the Tula nuclear powered submarine in the Barents Sea in the Arctic and hit a designated area in the Kura testing ground on the Kamchatka Peninsula on Russia's Pacific coast.

"The launch was conducted from an underwater position as a part of training to test the readiness of the marine strategic nuclear forces," the statement said.

A navy spokesman would not say what type of missile was tested. Itar-Tass news agency said the Tula submarine carried Sineva missiles commissioned by a decree from President Vladimir Putin in July.

Missile tests have become regular occurrences in the Russian armed forces in the past few years. They are viewed by Russia's political and military leadership as evidence that they are reviving the country's military might.

    Russia Successfully Tests New ICBM

    Dec 25, 2:23 PM (ET)

    By VLADIMIR ISACHENKOV

MOSCOW (AP) - Russia's military on Tuesday successfully test-fired a new intercontinental ballistic missile capable of carrying multiple nuclear warheads - a weapon intended to replace aging Soviet-era missiles.

The RS-24 missile was launched from the Plesetsk launch facility in northern Russia and its test warheads successfully hit designated targets on the Kura testing range on the Kamchatka Peninsula some 4,340 miles east, Strategic Missile Forces spokesman Alexander Vovk told The Associated Press.

Vovk said that the missile carried multiple test warheads, but refused to say how many. The Interfax news agency said the RS-24 is capable of carrying at least three warheads.

The Strategic Missile Forces said in a statement that the missile was launched from a mobile launcher.

It said the new missile was based on the Topol-M and built by the same design team - Moscow's Heat Technology Institute led by Yuri Solomonov. The RS-24 was first test-fired successfully in May.

"This missile is being created using scientific and technological solutions from the Topol-M missile which allows to significantly reduce time and cost of its development," the statement said.

Existing Topol-M missiles carry a single nuclear warhead and are capable of hitting targets more than 6,000 miles away.

The Strategic Missile Forces said the RS-24 missile is designed to replace Soviet-built missiles with multiple nuclear warheads, such as RS-18 and RS-20. Those missiles are known in the West as the SS-19 Stiletto and the SS-18 Satan.

"The RS-24's deployment will strengthen the Strategic Missile Forces' capability to penetrate missile defense systems and strengthen the nuclear deterrent potential of Russia's strategic nuclear forces," the statement said. "The RS-24 will form the backbone of the Strategic Missile Forces and safely ensure the security of Russia and its allies through the mid-century."
President Vladimir Putin has used windfall oil revenues to modernize Russia's military arsenals amid increasing tensions with the West. The Kremlin has fiercely opposed U.S. plans to deploy missile defense sites in Poland and the Czech Republic, saying they threaten Russia's security.

Russia could focus on tactical nuclear weapons for subs

    12:43 | 23/ 03/ 2009

MOSCOW, March 23 (RIA Novosti) - Russia may prioritize the development of nuclear-powered attack submarines armed with nuclear-capable cruise missiles in the future, while maintaining its fleet of strategic subs, a senior Navy official said.

The Russian Navy maintains a fleet of about 60 submarines, including 10 nuclear-powered strategic submarines, over 30 nuclear-powered attack submarines, diesel-electric submarines and special-purpose subs.

"Probably, tactical nuclear weapons [on submarines] will play a key role in the future," Vice Admiral Oleg Burtsev, deputy head of the Navy General Staff, told RIA Novosti.

"Their range and precision are gradually increasing."

"There is no longer any need to equip missiles with powerful nuclear warheads. We can install low-yield warheads on existing cruise missiles," he said.

The admiral mentioned Russia's new Severodvinsk nuclear-powered attack submarine, which will be commissioned with the Navy in 2010-2011, as an example.

The fourth-generation Graney class submarine combines the ability to launch a variety of long-range cruise missiles (up to 3,100 miles) with nuclear warheads, and effectively engage hostile submarines and surface warships.

However, Russia will maintain and upgrade its fleet of strategic submarines, carrying ballistic missiles, as a naval component of the nuclear triad.

"In this regard, we will build at least six Borey-class strategic submarines to serve in the Northern and the Pacific fleets," Burtsev said.

The first Borey-class submarine, the Yury Dolgoruky, was built at the Sevmash plant in northern Russia, and is undergoing mooring trials. It will carry up to 16 Bulava-M sea-based ballistic missiles.

Two other Borey class nuclear submarines, the Alexander Nevsky and the Vladimir Monomakh, are currently under construction at the Sevmash shipyard and are expected to be completed in 2009 and 2011.

    09:0114/07/2009

MOSCOW, July 14 (RIA Novosti) - Russia has successfully test-launched a Sineva sea-based ballistic missile, a source in the Defense Ministry confirmed on Tuesday.

"The launch was conducted on Monday from a Delta IV class strategic nuclear-powered submarine in service with Russia's Northern Fleet," the source said.

Russian President Dmitry Medvedev said on Monday that Russia had successfully test-launched a ballistic missile from a strategic submarine, but did not specify the type of missile or the name of the submarine.

"The target was hit and the pieces of the missile landed in the designated area," the president said at a meeting with Navy personnel in Russia's Black Sea resort of Sochi.

The RSM-54 Sineva (NATO designation SS-N-23 Skiff) is a third-generation liquid-propellant intercontinental ballistic missile that entered service with the Russian Navy in July 2007. It can carry four or 10 nuclear warheads, depending on the modification.

Russia is planning to equip its Delta IV class submarines with at least 100 Sineva missiles.

Russia tests submarine-launched missile: space agency

The Sineva is an intercontinental missile capable of carrying up to 10 nuclear warheads, according to the website GlobalSecurity.org.

    by Staff Writers

    Moscow (AFP) March 4, 2010

The Russian military on Thursday successfully tested a strategic missile from a submarine in the Arctic, Russia's federal space agency said.

"A Sineva missile was launched on March 4 at 7:50 am Moscow time (0450 GMT) from the Tula rocket-carrying submarine in the Barents Sea. The launch was successful," the agency said in a statement.

The Sineva is an intercontinental missile capable of carrying up to 10 nuclear warheads, according to the website GlobalSecurity.org.

The missile, whose NATO reporting name is the SS-N-23 Skiff, has been in service with the Russian military since 2007.

The successful test-firing of the Sineva comes after a series of embarrassing failures of another submarine-launched missile that Russia is developing, the Bulava.

Russia has announced plans for a large-scale rearmament and renewal of its nuclear missile arsenal.

Design Flaw Caused Latest Test Failure Of Bulava Missile - Source
    1/12/2010

Investigators have established that the latest test failure of the troubled Bulava ballistic missile was caused by a design flaw, rather than a faulty component, a Russian defense industry source said Tuesday.

"An investigation commission established in December that a design flaw in the device which controls the separation of the third stage had caused the latest failure of the Bulava missile," the source said.

It is the first time the Russian industry officials admit that there are problems with the original design of the submarine-launched ballistic missile (SLBM), which Russia hopes will be a key element of its nuclear forces.

The latest launch of the missile from the Dmitry Donskoy nuclear submarine in the White Sea ended in failure in early December 2009. Only five of 12 Bulava launches have been officially reported as being successful.

Earlier official statements cited a number of reasons for the failures of Bulava tests, including faulty components, attempts to replace specific materials with cheaper substitutes and obsolete manufacturing equipment.

The further development of the Bulava has been questioned by some lawmakers and defense industry experts, who have suggested that all efforts should be focused on the existing Sineva SLBM.

But the military has insisted there is no alternative to the Bulava and said the tests of the missile would continue until it is ready to enter service with the Russian Navy.

Another defense industry source said on Tuesday that Russia could increase the number of Bulava tests in 2010 starting in May-June, and "drastically change the approach to testing procedures."

The Bulava (SS-NX-30) SLBM carries up to 10 MIRV warheads and has a range of over 8,000 kilometers (5,000 miles). The three-stage liquid and solid-propellant ballistic missile is designed for deployment on Borey class nuclear-powered submarines.

Russia To Conduct Four Bulava Missile Test In June
    Mar 19, 2010

Russia plans to carry out at least four test launches of the Bulava ballistic missile by June end, a media report said.

"Two Bulava launches will be carried out from the Dmitry Donskoy nuclear submarine, followed by two launches from the Yury Dolgoruky nuclear sub," RIA Novosti quoted a senior Navy official as saying.

"The second test on the Yury Dolgoruky will be a salvo launch," he said.

The Bulava-M (SS-NX-30) ICBM carries up to 10 nuclear warheads and has a range of 8,000 kilometers (5,000 miles). The three-stage ballistic missile is designed for deployment on Borey class Project 955 nuclear-powered submarines.

The future development of Bulava has been questioned by some lawmakers and defence industry officials following a series of test failures. Only five of 12 Bulava test launches from the Dmitry Donskoy sub have been officially reported as being successful, the report said.

Russia will carry out its next test launch of the troubled Bulava ballistic missile in the third quarter of the year, a deputy defense minister said on Monday.

"In the third quarter launches will resume. The first will be from the nuclear Dmitry Donskoy submarine. From which vessel the next launch will come depends on the first launch," said Col. Gen. Dmitry Popovkin, who is also a member of the Russian General Staff.

Russia hopes the Bulava will be a key element of its nuclear forces. The missile has been specifically designed for Russia's new Borey class nuclear submarines, the first of which, the Yury Dolgoruky, is currently undergoing sea trials.

Defense Minister Anatoly Serdyukov said in May that Bulava test launches had been postponed until November.

Only five of 12 Bulava launches have been officially reported as being successful and late last month a special commission sent the government the results of its investigation into the latest failure, a launch from the Dmitry Donskoy in the White Sea in early December 2009.

The Russian Navy earlier planned at least four new test launches of the missile at the end of June, but defense industry experts suggested they would need to build three missiles under identical conditions to establish the causes of the failures.

The Bulava (SS-NX-30) is a three-stage liquid and solid-propellant submarine-launched ballistic missile (SLBM).

It carries up to 10 MIRV warheads and has a range of over 8,000 kilometers (5,000 miles).

The future development of Bulava has been questioned by some lawmakers and defense industry officials who suggest that the Russian Navy should keep using the more reliable Sineva SLBM.

The Russian military has insisted that there is no alternative to the Bulava and pledged to continue testing the missile until it is ready to be deployed with the Navy.

June 28, Bulava to be launched for the first time from nuclear submarine Yuri Dolgoruky

According to RIA Novosti, citing a source in the Russian military-industrial complex, this year's first test launch of the submarine-launched ballistic missile (SLBM) Bulava will be implemented on Tuesday, June 28.

SLBM Bulava (lit. "mace"; designation RSM-56, NATO reporting name SS-NX-30) is the newest Russian three-stage solid fuel ballistic missile, launched from submarines.

"The decision to hold the June 28 test launch of the SLBM Bulava was taken by the State Commission for flight development tests last Saturday", said the source.

"The missile will be test-fired from the Barents Sea from the ballistic missile standard submarine carrier Yuri Dolgoruky, added the source.

All previous launches were carried out from the submarine Dmitry Donskoy (Project 941U, class "Shark"). The Bulava launch from the nuclear submarine Yuri Dolgoruky (Project 955, class "Borei") will be held for the first time.

Only seven out of 14 previous launches were successful. The most recent successful launch was carried out October 29, 2010. The date of the next missile test was shifted several times to determine the causes of the failed launches.

Bulava was designed by Moscow Institute of Thermal Technology. Its flight range is 8,000 km; launch weight is 36.8 tons; number of stages is 3; number of warheads is 6 x 150 kilotons; guidance system is inertial; throw-weight is 1,150 kg; length in launch container is 12.1 meters; length without warhead is 11.5 meters. Russia test launches Bulava missile

    From: AAP
    June 29, 2011 1:04AM

THE Russian military test launched its new Bulava intercontinental missile yesterday from a submarine in the White Sea, a major boost for the navy after a series of embarrassing failures.

"The launch has been successful according to all the parameters," spokesman for the defence ministry Igor Konashenkov told AFP.

The test was the first such launch from the Yury Dolgoruky strategic nuclear submarine which was specifically designed to carry the Bulava missiles.
All previous such launches had been made from the Dmitry Donskoi submarine.

The missile was fired in the White Sea in North European Russia and hit its target in the Kura firing area on the Kamchatka peninsula in the Pacific Ocean some 6000 kilometres away, Konashenkov said.

Russia plans to conduct four more missile launches this year, he added. If further tests are successful, the missile can be taken into the armed forces in late 2011 or early next year, Konashenkov said.

It was the 15th such test and the first such test this year, according to the defence ministry. Of the previous launches, only seven were successful, the defence ministry said.

The Bulava, which can be equipped with up to 10 individually targeted nuclear warheads capable of changing their flight trajectory, has a maximum range of 8000 kilometres.

Its incorporation into the armed forces is part of a wide-ranging military reform aimed at updating the armed forces' Soviet-era structures and equipment to bring them in line with the demands of modern warfare.

The missile is designed for use with Russia's new Borei class of nuclear submarines like the Yury Dolgoruky and Alexander Nevsky. Analysts have said the vessels risk being worthless unless the Bulava works.

    Russia Successfully Tests Ballistic Missile
    June 28, 2011

Russia's Defense Ministry spokesman says the latest underwater launch of Bulava missile had meets all parameters.

Russia has successfully test launched its new ballistic missile from a nuclear submarine, after several previous failed attempts.

Defense Ministry spokesman Igor Konashenkov said Tuesday the latest underwater launch of the Bulava missile had met all parameters.

The missile was fired from Russia's northern White Sea and reached the Kura testing area on Kamchatka in the Pacific Ocean more than 5,500 kilometers away.

Military officials said that with four more successful launches, the Bulava could become part of Russia's military arsenal.

(WAPA) - Colonel Igor Konashenkov, Russian defense ministry's spokesman, stated that today took place successfully the launch of the 15th Bulava ballistic missile.

It was launched for the first time from a Yuri Dolgoruky submarine in the waters of the White Sea between Russia and Scandinavia and reached as scheduled its target at about 5500 km away in the Kamchatka Peninsula.

Today's launch is the 15th of a Bulava missile -NATO code name SS-NX-30- which follows a number of failed attempts occurred last year (7 out of 15 tests): a result which had raised concerns about the effectiveness of these weapons, to which however Russia does not intend to renounce considering them as the only existing alternative and which it's going to use as strategic weapons from "Borey" class submarines until at least 2040-45.

SS-NX-30, solid and liquid propellant three-stage missiles, have a range of over 8000 km and can carry up to 10 MIRVs, Multiple Independently targetable Reentry Vehicles.

It is the newest and most modern submarine Project 955 class "Boreas" by Russian admirals considered strategic missile submarine destroyer.

These "underwater destroyers" should become the strong arm of Russia's naval strategic nuclear forces in the 21st century.

The ceremony was held at the famous military shipyard "Sevmaš," Shoigu and then - using a secure connection - everything about informed the Head of State and Chief of the Armed Forces of the RF Vladimir Putin.

"Dolgoruky" is about 170 meters long, width - 13.5 meters. Carries 16 ballistic missiles strategic "Bulava-30" (according to Western classification SS-NM-30) and nasjavremenija torpedoes.

Russia has completed the construction of two submarines of this class.

On the last day of the 2012th the water was lowered its "twin brother" - "Vladimir Mono" which, as the najavbljuje, be najbešumniji.

However, three missile tests have been completed and failed. Moreover, despite the technical task to be done rockets weighing up to 40 tons, experts from the Urals were offered a rocket weighing 90 tons (later said they wanted to use it on heavy strategic missile submarine 941 project applications, Class "Shark" instead of rockets lifted R-39).

Russian Navy Successfully Tests New Missile

    November 28, 2014

The Russian Navy on Friday successfully test-fired a new intercontinental ballistic missile for a second time in as many months, proving its reliability following a troublesome development.

The Defense Ministry said the Alexander Nevsky nuclear submarine test-fired a Bulava missile from an underwater position in the Barents Sea. The missile's warheads reached designated targets at a testing range in Russia's far eastern Kamchatka Peninsula.

The Bulava suffered many failures during a decade of tests, raising doubts about the fate of Russia's most expensive and ambitious weapons program since the Soviet collapse. But a series of recent launches has been successful and the Navy now has three Borei-class nuclear submarines armed with the Bulava.

Two of them, the Alexander Nevsky and the Yuri Dolgoruky, named after medieval Russian rulers, already have entered service. The third one has been completed and is waiting to be formally commissioned by the Navy. Overall, eight Borei-class submarines are set to be built.

Like the previous Bulava launch on Oct. 29 from the Yuri Dolgoruky, Friday's test was essential for confirming the capability of the missile, which Russia touted as a key part of its nuclear deterrent.

With Soviet-built nuclear submarines approaching the end of their lifetime, the Kremlin has made replacing them a top priority in the arms modernization program, which envisages spending 20 trillion rubles (more than $400 billion) on new weapons through 2020.

According to Russian media reports, the Bulava has a range of more than 8,000 kilometers (nearly 5,000 miles) and is capable of carrying up to 10 nuclear warheads. Military officials have boasted about its ability to penetrate any prospective missile defense.
